Teacher Dennis Smith is very grateful to our school community for the support and best wishes at the time of his accident. He was verytouched by the efforts of our Japanese families, students, staff and parents who made the 1200 cranes to wish for his survival and returnto good health. They now hang in the foyer of the hospital. Dennis instigated the article that appeared in last Wednesdays Advertiser(and reprinted in todays newsletter) to show his appreciation for our community and for the care he is receiving at Hampstead Rehabil-itation Centre. Dennis is working very hard and looking forward to Christmas at home and returning to school at the start of Term 2next year. In the meantime we continue to be optimistic and resilient just as Dennis would expect of us all. Bad things do happen togood people in all of our lives, some much worse than others- it does help us to put our small issues in perspective and model for chil-dren that no matter how bad a situation may be, there is always hope and learning that comes from it.

At the start of each school year we need accurate student enrolments. Our day 1 and 6 enrolments determine our level of funding. If you

know your family will be late back from holidays at the start of next year please complete an exemption form, phone or email theschool. We are funded for all students returning.

We have extensive uniform items in the Resource Centre that are lost property. Please come and look if you are missing items. Thankyou to who comes in each week and organises for the return of named items. I request that all parents have a check through your childsuniform this week. We know some named items are missing and we think it likely that they have been inadvertently picked up. Somestudents and parents are checking regularly to see if their items may be returned. In addition could everyone please ensure all articlesare named for the new school year?

As required by our department all parents were polled to decide school fees for 2013. All families were invited to vote through a pollsent by mail. The Governing Council proposal to increase school fees was successful with 93 votes for increasing fees and 10 votesagainst. School fees will be set at $399 for 2013.

Christmas is a time for appreciating others. It is time for generosity of spirit and ac-tion. I encourage all community members to consider this week whose buckets theycan fill. By being a bucket filler, you also fill your own bucket with a sense of wellbe-ing. Go out of your way to thank that person who has helped you, done somethingspecial or has provided you with a sense of joy, humour or hope. As adults we need tomodel this for children, tell them what we are doing and why.

Many thanks to Sylvia Hillier and Meredith McAvaney for their huge commitment to the uniform shop over many years. Both havetheir last child leaving Burnside at the end of this week.

We wish to acknowledge the work of the retiring P&F Executive Committee, Sandra Gale President, Angely Bolzon Vice President,

Bec Mumford Secretary and Sarah Rowney who will continue as Treasurer.

Thank you to the many parents who have helped with playtimes at Hazelwood Park this term. Your support means students have hadthe opportunity to play in large grassed spaces.

Many thanks to Dan Jarrad who has been a fantastic school leader for the last six years at Burnside. We will greatly miss his profes-sional manner, skills, support and friendship. We wish him the very best at Elizabeth Grove PS. We know he will be a great princi-

pal as he is a passionate leader and educator and cares about children, their welfare and learning.

On behalf of all staff I wish every child and their family a very happyChristmas and relaxing holiday period. We will welcome students back onTuesday 29th January 2013 for another exciting year of

much looking forward to the next stage of my career. I will take with me many wonderful and varied

    experiences from Burnside PS.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation of the support Ive received over my 6

years as Deputy Principal of Burnside PS. I feel very fortunate to have worked with a school communi-ty such as ours and I can only hope to emulate it in my new school as the principal.

I have been very privileged to work in partnership with an amazing community of parents and stu-

dents during my time at the school. I have always appreciated the manner in which we have worked

together with a combination of respect, cooperation and commitment to developing a sense of com-

munity. Reflecting on my time at Burnside PS, I am very proud of what has been achieved and the di-

rections that have been set as the school moves forward.

To the students of Burnside PS, I could not have thought of working with a more engaged, enjoyable,

respectful and happy community of learners. I have thoroughly enjoyed developing relationships with

so much trust in my leadership. It can only be defined as a great community school.

develop and evolve in years to come. I wish you all enjoy a wonderful Christmas break and a safe re-

    turn in 2013.

An ancient symbol of peace and hope, paper cranes have begun the healing process

for teacher Dennis Smith and students at Burnside Primary School.

Mr Smiths Year 3 class was shocked to hear the teacher had been crushed by a falling

tree in the Adelaide Hills, leaving him unconscious and in intensive care.

Within days of the accident on September 6th, students began folding 1000 origami

cranes. it gave the children something really tangible to do that they thought wouldbe helping Mr Smith, so it was part of the healing, said Burnside Primary School prin-

    cipal Sharon Broadbent.

The lovely part was that we had some older children helping the younger children, so

it really became a focus of the caring and nurturing side that Dennis is so well know

    for.

The paper cranes now hang in the foyer of the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centres spi-

nal injuries unit, where Mr. Smith has spent the past 13 weeks.

In Japanese legend, a wish is granted in return for 1000 paper cranes and for Mr

Smiths family their wish is to have him home for Christmas.

As he lay pinned beneath the limbs of a ghost gum in the Adelaide Hills, Mr Smith

called out for his wife Melanie and son Tom, 16.

Twelve days later, having been resuscitated three times before reaching the Royal Ade-laide Hospital, it was their familiar voices that brought the 58 year old back.

I just remember having my family there, I remember lying there with my eyes closed

and hearing their voices, he said.

Mr Smith had been helping neighbours on Nioka Drive at Ironbank to remove debris

from a fallen stringybark, which SES crews had removed about 10.30pm.

I said to the property owner, well just check to see if theres any other damage, Mr

Smith said. I got three or fours steps up the embankment when the tree fell.

Left with badly damaged internal organs, broken ribs, shredded muscles and bones

snapped from his spine, Mr Smith credits quick thinking neighbours, ambulance offic-

ers, intensive care, trauma unit and Hampstead Centre staff with his recovery.

For Mr Smith, the paper cranes are a reminder of his quest to once again walk the hall-

    ways of his school.

    Review

Over the past few weeks the Schools

Ministry Group, local churches and the

school held a biannual review of Sheila

Chehades role in our school. A sample

of students, staff and parent feedback

was sought and collated. I am very

pleased to inform you that feedback was

    overwhelmingly positive.

    Feedback documented the wonderful

care and support Sheila provides to indi-

viduals, classes, teachers and parents. I

    know everyone appreciates her Bucket

Filler Story and how she has supported

us through some very sad events this

    year. Congratulations Sheila for your

    kindness and perceptive inter personal

    skills.

DEGUSTATION DE FROMAGES ET PAIN AU CHOCOLATIn Week 8 week, our lucky Year 7s tasted a selection of imported French

fromages (cheeses), accompanied by jus de pomme (apple juice), as well as mak-ing their own easy pain au chocolat. Students have been encouraged to replicatethe pastry at home for the benefit of the whole family, so voil la recette (heres therecipe):

PAINS AU CHOCOLAT (une recette trs facile)INGREDIENTS:

puff pastry sheets (we used Borgs from the supermarket freezer section)block of chocolate (we used Cadbury ) and milk to glaze

METHOD: Pre-heat oven to 220 degrees (HOT) and leave out sheets of puff pastry to

defrost for 10 mins. With a knife, score each sheet into 8 equal pieces, place 3 squares

of chocolate onto 4 of the pieces and top with the other 4. Press and seal around the

edges with a fork and glaze with milk. Cook until golden, about 15 minutes, depending

    on your oven.

Each pastry sheet yields 4 decent-sized pains au chocolat, so the number you make isup to you!!

    Gteau au Yaourt

Last week, Audrey did her Masterchef demonstration, showing students how to makea traditional French Gteau au Yaourt. Staff certainly enjoyed the left-overs!Here is her recipe:1 Plain yoghurt ( approx. 200g)

1 tub (from yoghurt) of caster sugar

    2 eggs

    2 tubs of plain flour

    2 teaspoons of baking powder

    1/2 tub of sunflower oil

    1 tub of chocolate melts

In a large bowl, beat the eggs, add the yoghurt and mix, add the sugar

and mix everything well. Add the flour and the baking powder, mix, add the oil, mix again, add chocolate

melts. Mix again. Preheat the oven at 180c. Grease the baking tin or put some baking paper on it (you can usesome oil or water to make the paper stick to the tin). Pour the dough into the baking tin and bake for 30 minutes

at 180C. Dont forget to clean the kitchen once you have put your cake in the oven.

We are trs triste (very sad) to farewell our fantastic French Assistante, Audrey Place, atthe end of this term. She has been of enormous help to the French teachers, and our

students have definitely benefited from having an authentic French speaker in the class-

room. She led the Year 6s in their French Assembly dance, and teamed beautifully with

Pierre and Emmanuelle earlier this year to show-

case her birthplace and French culture. Her culi-

nary skills have been much appreciated by the Yr

7s recently, and her Ptisserie and Nol power-points had all students salivating and learning a lot

about French traditions. Audrey has fitted beauti-

fully into our BPS school community

and she will be missed by all of us. Merci

beaucoup et bon retour en France, Audrey. Gros bisous de tout le monde!

D FINLY...............................................................Both French teachers et Audrey would like to wish our Year 7 graduates:

BONNE CHANCE ET BON COURAGE AU LYCEE!! (Good luck in High

School), and to everyone in our Burnside community, BONNES VACANCES, JOYEUX NOEL ET BONNE ANNEE 2012!

famous cathedral since 1570, its also one of the oldest. The atmosphere is magical, and after explor-ing the charming timbered buildings of La Petite France with a delightful gingerbread bakery, it is like
