Kemnay Academy is located in the village of Kemnay 16 miles west of Aberdeen in central Aberdeenshire. It lies within the Garioch/Formartine area. It is generally in the least or second-least categories of multiple deprivations but the NE part of Kemnay, that corresponding to part of the Alehousewells Primary school catchment lies in the middle category. Our Academy is a comprehensive, six-year purpose built community school. We enjoy a very pleasant location with an open outlook over the River Don and surrounding countryside. We are part of the Kemnay Children’s Services Network (CSN) and are proud of the inclusive culture that we foster. The Academy was opened in 1982, serving the communities of Kemnay, Kintore and the surrounding rural area. We now also serve Kinellar. Each is a dormitory settlement for Aberdeen and the unique economy of Aberdeen influences the nature of our catchment. There is relatively little employment within the catchment itself. Our 4 cluster primary schools are Alehousewells, Kemnay, Kinellar and Kintore. Some pupils from outwith the catchment also choose to attend Kemnay Academy. Over two thirds of our pupils are bussed to school.

Despite being one of Aberdeenshire’s smaller academies, we are growing steadily. The Academy’s roll will continue to rise following extensive housing developments, notably in Kinellar and Kintore. We have a roll of around 740 in 2014-15. We are involved in planning future secondary educational provision in our area with officers of Aberdeenshire Council and stakeholders. Aberdeenshire Council has recognised the pressing need for additional and improved facilities and a major extension and refurbishment is now complete. Relocatable classrooms have been installed to cope with the additional pressure and impact of the extension. Extended facilities in Art and Technical were opened in 2011-12. We currently offer a variety of extra-curricular activities and have an active House system. We pride ourselves on the broad, balanced curriculum, including new courses at National 3, 4 and 5 in S4 and new Higher and Advanced Higher levels available in S5 and 6. We are outward looking with good International links. We maintain elective experiences in both S1 and S2 as part of the Broad General Education. Our pupils’ attainment remains above the national average.

0o5[WELCOME]

Dear Delegate,

Welcome to Kemnay Academy’s Business Breakfast.

This event represents a commitment by the Academy to establish and maintain effective links with business partners and to help develop our students as Scotland’s Young Workforce. On behalf of all the pupils, teachers and parents of the Academy, I thank our business partners for your generous giving of time to engage with our senior students. I hope today will help you keep abreast of current and continuing changes in education as well as being able to interact with our young people. To our students, I send you our best wishes for an enjoyable, challenging and useful event that helps your plan-ning of your futures.

The links we forge with our partners are vital for helping us develop in our students the essential skills for learning, life and work. They gain the benefits of a first-hand insight into the current and projected needs of employers with regard to young peoples’ skills and motivation. These links also demonstrate our commitment towards our wider community.

I sincerely hope that our Business Breakfast will be productive, and thank you for your interest and engagement in it.

0o9[The day]What is the Business Breakfast? Now in its third year the Business Breakfast is a unique event that brings together education and industry. The event allows you the pupils from S5 and S6 to find out about the pathways available for future studies and careers.

What is the aim of the event? The event has one main aim, this is: • To make the pupils more confident in asking questions and hopefully help them to make some career choices!

What is the format of the day?

The business breakfast format runs on a ‘speed networking’ principle. The Collins English dictionary defines speed networking as:

So What are the rules?

The rules are really quite simple, so here’s how it works:1. You will have 3 minutes with each set of students no more or no less 2. Students will ask you questions, on a variety of subjects. Also, feel free to ask the students questions.3. After 3 minutes, the students move around and the process starts all over again!!

the practice of trying to form business connections and contacts through meetings at which individuals are given the opportunity to have several conversations of limited duration with strangers.

Rwandan Partnership

Early in 2014 we committed to working with RSVP to sponsor 4 students from Ryankana School through their secondary education, each house has adopted one of the students to raise funds for. Now in our second year of sponsorship each Christmas we sent a collective cheque for £600 for the education of the 4 pupils. The partner head teacher is visiting the first week back after the Easter Holidays, and an extensive programme is being put in place.

015Charities Committee

Kemnay Academy has a strong tradition of supporting charities. Our senior charity committee (Kemnay4Charity) has raised a tremendous £30,000 for local, national and international causes in just 9 years, last year the committee raised over £4,500 for Shelterbox UK (Kintore Rotary Club) and the Foodbank in Inverurie. This session has been no exception with two charities being selected to be the schools main focus, they are Charlie’s House and The Schools Rwandan Partnership. Fundraising for both charities is well under way and some highlights of our fundraising include the Christmas Fair which raised over £1300. Our most recent fundraising event was the valentine rose’s which made over £100.

Once again, the pupil’s in the committee are taking part in the Jasmine Charity Challenge run by Jasmine holdings (Citrix:Mix part of Jasmine Holding). The challenge has two main events, the first in November where the pupils present a business plan on how they will raise funds for the selected charities. The second event takes place in June and is a celebration for the pupils taking part in the challenge. At this event, they make a small presentation on the highlights from their year of fundraising, certificates are awarded for participation. Each school also gets the opportunity to nominate a student of excellence.

Rock ChallengeRock Challenge has become a firm favourite of the pupils at the academy since its inception at the academy in 2009. The Initiative now in its 20th year is run by the By Be Your Best Foundation Rock Challenge and allows pupils to communicate a health and social education messages in a positive and supportive environment via drama and dance. This year’s theme of greed is based on the story of El Dorado. Over a hundred pupils are involved and are working hard towards the final performance in March at the AECC. The academy has won awards for Set Design, costume design, hair and makeup, the Spirit of Rock Challenge and placing in the final (3rd). A Special thank you to all our partner who have donated monetary donations, these include H&F Moir, SafeLift, Andersons of Inverurie and Stats Group.
