TeeeD NNNATNBill Gates and Paul Allen began their road

to success in Albuquerque. The men moved

to the cit in 1975 to produce the Altair

Basic computer language for the Micro

Instrumentation Telemetr Sstems (MITS)

Altair 8800 based on the BASIC language

Gates had begun developing at Harvard. MITS

produced this minicomputer for the hobbist

market, and it is considered b man to be

the first personal computer. Gates and Allen

formed Microsoft in Albuquerque in 1977

and marketed their DOS operating sstem

to IBM in 1981, which launched Gates, Allen

and Microsoft as major plaers in the industr.

Albuquerque also features two Intel chip-

manufacturing plants and is the birthplace

of Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos.

mre KCK N ruTe 66A popular shopping oasis in Albuquerque, the Historic Nob Hill District is

one of the best-preserved communities along the famed Route 66 highwa.

Convenientl located just east of the Universit of New Mexico, the district

contains an eclectic collection of shops, boutiques, restaurants and clubs as

well as the Nob Hill Shopping Center. Respected architect Louis Hesselden

designed this shopping center, mixing elements of Modern and Territorial

Revival designs. The centers deco-inspired towers and man of its original

neon signs remain intact, which makes the center one of the best-preserved

examples of a 1940s automobile-oriented shopping center in the U.S.

confirm that the Greater Albuquerque region is amagnet for high-tech industries and businesses lookingto innovate, diversify and grow.

All of these companies decided that no otherplace meets their needs as well as Albuquerque,which ranks 60th among the top 100 U.S. markets ineconomic clout. Approaching the milestone of onemillion residents, the city is already the nations57th most populous, and ranks 68th among U.S.cities for brainpower.

Albuquerque is working toward lowering costs andregulations for relocating and expanding companiessuch as Lowes and its highly skilled workforce isalso a big draw.

We chose Albuquerque because of the talentedand experienced workforce and availability of a suitablebuilding to house our operations, says Lowes vicepresident Don Easterling.

Albuquerques location in the Mountain

Time Zone offers an ideal complement to ourcustomer support center in North Carolina,Easterling adds. The support of state and local

officials made this a win-win project.The national retailer is initially creating 250

jobs at its new customer support center a numberexpected to grow to 600 jobs by the end of 2013.Lowes is investing more than $15 millionin its 65,000-square-foot facility.

At Kirtland Air Force Bases new $59.5 millionBattlespace Environment Laboratory, scientistsand technicians will predict the weather in spaceto ensure the reliability of satellites.

With an annual budget close to $89 million,the facility will create nearly 200 jobs, accordingto Kirtland officials.

Another example of lifesavingnanotechnology is produced byDr. Edward Flynn, who createdmammogram technology thatholds the promise of earlier

detection of breast cancerand other forms of cancer.If we can detect cancer much

Flynn founded Senior Scientific,LLC, which has developed ananotechnology-based, magneticimaging method for diagnosis andtreatment of cancer that couldprovide earlier detection ofcertain cancers, targeted therapies

Greater Albuquerque is a hub for clean energycompanies that are diversifying an alreadytechnology-rich economy.

This robust sector made Albuquerque 52nd among100 metro areas for the number of clean energy jobs employing an estimated 9,900 workers. The BrookingsInstitute survey ranked the region even higher withrespect to the intensity of its clean energy sector and

job growth between 2003 and 2010, which averaged7.8 percent annual ly. On that measure, Albuquerqueranked 10th.

Conservation is the largest and fastest-growingsegment of Albuquerques renewable energy industry,

but clusters of solar, thermal and green buildingcompanies are growing, too. Natural resources, humancapital and reasonable costs of doing business areamong the draws for companies. Proximity to SandiaNational Laboratories and Kirkland Air Force Baseare other key factors.

There is such a high proliferation of engineers,and with Sandia and the universities, Albuquerquehas become an incubator for alternative energy, saysChristopher Larocca, COO of EMCORE, whose solarpanels are powering the Mars Science Laboratoryspacecraft, expected to land on the red planet inAugust 2012. We have really enjoyed our stay here

because of the talent and the close relationship wehave with representatives of other institutions.

EMCORE, in fact, got its start with technologydeveloped at Sandia more than a decade ago andgovernment-funded contracts to develop better solarpanels for aerospace applications. That technology isnow finding its way back to earth.

We have huge open spaces, good in-ground naturalresources, and we attract people who think of theneed to do this differently, says Kyle Lee, COO ofMIOX Corp., which produces water purification

technologies now deployed to more than 1,500 sites.Both established companies and start-ups are makingtheir mark. Schott Solar AG operates a flagship facilityin the region for manufacturing photovoltaic modulesand receivers for concentrated solar panels. ArrayTechnologies makes solar tracking equipment. Various companies benefit from appliedresearch at Sandia and the University of NewMexico. With technology transfer programsthat help commercialize new ideas, both labsare economic development powerhouses.

The regions culture creates companies thatcan grow and remain nimble. MIOX launchedwith a military focus, developing water purificationsystems for aircraft carriers. Now it has systems forpurifying water used in projects that range fromtreating the entire water supply of Bogota, Colombia,to a backyard swimming pool.

We get incredible pull to diverse locations tofulfill a demand that is always there, Lee says.

Albuquerque has its own pull.It is not a difficult place to recruit to,

Larocca says. Winters dont get too cold;

summers dont get too hot. A lot of peoplereally enjoy living here.

When EMCORE bought TechStar, a Los Angeles-based company, nearly 20 workers opted to transferto Albuquerque. The lower cost of living allowedthem to buy homes for the first time, he says. Folkshigher up on the corporate ladder find the region

Sandia Science & TechnologyPark houses companies, scientistsand researchers involved in advancing

new technologies. New additions includeGAITS (Global Analytical InformationTechnology Services Inc.) and the

Cyber Engineering Research Institute.

An entrepreneur program allows Sandiascientists to start businesses in the privatesector, guaranteeing their jobs for two

years if they change their minds. And thestate gives up to $2.4 million in taxexemptions each to Sandia and Los Alamosto offer technical assistance to any smallbusiness in the state. In 2011, the labsresearchers devoted $4.6 million in timeto 340 small businesses in New Mexico,says Jackie Kerby Moore, executive directorof Sandias technology park.

The Greater Albuquerque regionis ideal for businesses that shipand distribute goods to western

markets and beyond, thanks in largepart to its competitive outgoing freightrates and location at the bisection of twomajor interstates.

I-25 is the main north-south highwayon the citys eastern side of the Rio Grandeand also connects Albuquerque with SantaFe and Las Cruces. I-40 is the citys maineast-west traffic artery and an importanttranscontinental route.

BNSF Railway, which has a north-southline that connects in Albuquerque and aneast-west line that connects 40 miles southof Albuquerque in Belen, is planning tobuild a multimodal logistics center inRancho Cielo, located near Belen on thewest side of I-25, that could create evenmore potential for growth in distribution,warehousing and manufacturing facilities.

The region also offers passenger railincluding an east-west Amtrak routebetween Chicago and Los Angeles thatruns through Albuquerque, and a light-rail passenger commuter system, theNew Mexico Rail Runner, that passesthrough downtown Albuquerque.

Offering service to more than 20 hubs,Albuquerque International Sunport is a lsoan economic driver.

We bring in passengers who are touriststo Albuquerque, plus accommodatethousands of business travelers who travelto and from our city, says Daniel Jiron,

Albuquerque International Sunport publicinformation officer. Quite a few high-tech companies use the airport because

we have connectivity to the San Franciscoarea and Silicon Valley, and a lot ofgovernment people from Washington,D.C., come to Albuquerque for businessat Sandia National Laboratories and theLos Alamos National Laboratory.

Sunport has a separate cargo facility,and passenger carriers include American,Continental, Delta, Frontier, Southwest,United and US Airways.

Those airlines serve 27 citiesincluding connections to the largehubs of Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Los

to the east side, but is a rush hour problembecause cars and trucks are gridlocked onthe Paseo/I-25 interchange, says TrudyJones, Albuquerque City Council president.What has happened over the years isthat development grew, so we have anintersection that is packed. Plans are inthe works to make improvements, with
