Large foals that are growing rapidly are often considered to be at increased risk ofdevelopmental orthopedic disease (DOD). A multifactorial problem, DOD includesproblems such as osteochondrosis dessicans (defective bone and cartilage at the jointsurface), epiphysitis (enlarged, painful growth plates), flexure and angular limbdeformities, and perhaps wobblers syndrome. Genetics, nutrition and exercise all play arole in the incidence of DOD in horses.
Hereditary predisposition to at least OCD is well documented in Standardbred andSwedish warmblood horses, with the incidence as high as 45% in some bloodlines. However, the genetic defect that causes the growth associated problems in the horses hasnot been identified. Breeds selected for rapid growth are at increased risk of developingproblems, but it is not growth rate alone that causes the problem. It is not always the mostrapidly growing foal that develops DOD, but often the one with the most erratic growthrate.
Trauma due to excessive concussion, due either to severe obesity or forced exercise, mayincrease the incidence of DOD. Other reports, however, revealed that restriction ofexercise adversely impacts bone growth and development in young horses. Turning thefoals out in as large an area (either pasture or paddock) as possible for as long as possibleis highly recommended. Ideally they should get 24-hour turnout. However, strenuousforced exercise, especially lunging in circles, should be avoided. Foals should not beallowed to become obese.
Mineral imbalances have been well documented to cause DOD. Deficiencies of calcium, phosphorus and/or copper all result in defective bone maturation. Zinc toxicity andperhaps deficiency also have resulted in lesions, though the effects of simple zincdeficiency are not well documented. The optimal intakes of copper and zinc for younghorses have not been well defined. Current recommendations for mineral content of rationsfor foals less than 1 year of age are given in Table 1.
Excessive protein (greater than 16%) was incriminated as a cause of DOD in the 1970s butsubsequent studies have not revealed a direct relationship between high protein rations andDOD. Weanlings fed rations deficient in protein (less than 12%) had reduced growth ratesand poor bone mineralization compared to weanlings fed rations which were higher inprotein. Restricting protein in a rapidly growing foal’s ration will not result in improvedbone growth and may actually be detrimental to the animal.
Rations providing over 100% of the National Research Council’s recommended amountsof energy for rapid growth in foals may cause an increased incidence of DOD, especially ifthe ration contains more than 50% sweet feed (grain mix plus molasses) or other highsugar concentrate by weight. High carbohydrate rations such as sweet feeds may contributeto the appearance of DOD, possibly related to the high blood glucose and insulin and lowblood pH they cause for up to 4 hours after feeding. Pelleted and extruded feeds tend tohave lower molasses contents and higher fiber concentrations have a lesser effect onglucose and insulin. Pelleting appears to affect the availability of carbohydrates andpelleted concentrates may cause lower glucose and insulin changes than textured feedswith the same basic formulation (Ralston, 1992). There may be a correlation between OCDand glucose intolerance (abnormally high blood glucose and insulin after a meal of sweetfeed) in foals that are genetically predisposed to the problem.

Fact Sheet #895 - Reviewed 2004
Recommendations
Nursing foals should be introduced to concentrates when they are 1 to 2months of age. The concentrate should contain 14 to 18% protein andhave added calcium, phosphorus, copper and zinc (see Table 1) in aformulation designed specifically for growing horses. The higherpercentages of protein and calcium should be used if only grass hay isavailable. The lower percentages can be used with legume or legume/grass mix hays. Concentrates should be fed at the rate of 0.25% to1.0% of body weight, with the emphasis on maintaining lean bodycondition (ribs not visible but can be felt with mild pressure over theflank; loin, croup and neck have smooth outlines without creases orvisible bony structures). If the lower amounts are fed (less than 0.5%body weight), addition of a balanced calcium/phosphorus mix might benecessary to maintain the proper mineral intake. Ideally the foalsshould be fed regulated amounts that are inaccessible to their dams orother foals at least once, preferably twice, a day. The dams also shouldbe fed the same concentrate if the foal has access to the mare’s feed.
Don’t let the foal get obese (obvious crease down the back, ribs can not be easilyfelt) or excessively thin (ribs easily visible, hip bones prominent, hair coat dulland shaggy). If group feeding foals and mares, monitor their condition dailyand feed any excessively thin or fat foals separately. Since pelleted andextruded feeds cause lower glucose and insulin responses than do sweet feeds, the former two types of concentrate may be preferable to textured sweet feedmixes, especially in foals from bloodlines potentially predisposed to OCD.
Weanlings should be fed the same type of concentrate as when they were nursing andat the same rate as above and monitored carefully for signs of excessive weightgain or loss and DOD. Between 0.25 to 1.0% body weight of a properlyformulated concentrate divided into two or three meals a day, with free choiceaccess to good quality mixed legume/grass hay or pasture will maintainoptimal growth rates of most light horse breeds while reducing the risk ofDOD. The goal is to maintain steady growth, avoiding sudden increases ordecreases, and to maintain good but not fat or thin body condition. Plain whiteor trace mineral salt and a good, clean source of water should be available freechoice at all times.
If signs of epiphysitis (enlargement at the growth plates above the fetlocks and/orknees associated with lameness and reluctance to exercise) or other deformities(contracted tendons, angular deformities) appear, the ration is probably notproperly balanced. The amount of concentrate fed should be temporarilyreduced while the total ration’s nutrient content is assessed. Any deficits orexcesses should be corrected and a properly balanced ration reintroduced assoon as possible. Starving foals (feeding only grass hay and oats for aprolonged period of time, resulting in weight loss, poor growth and rough-looking hair coats) will not correct the problem on a long-term basis.
Yearlings’ rations can be reduced to 12%-14% protein with lesser concentrations ofminerals, but still above that usually found in mixes formulated for adulthorses. Maintaining yearlings on the weanling rations will not hurt and mayhelp, especially if horses are still growing fairly rapidly.

“No Room At The Loading Dock Blues”By Half Vast Connie
I went to the local feed store and whatdid I see?
At loading dock there were carsstaring back at me!
It was my impression the dock wasjust for truck!
But to find a space depended on one’sown luck!!!
There’s P.T. Cruiser: its owner exitswith duck in hand!
Did you hear my loud piercing yell,“Oh Damn! Oh Damn!
Someone goes to their car with poundof bird seed-
Way out in parking lot a truck isgetting 12 bags of feed!
Now the guy who loads the feed has avery skinny frame....
In my opinion, he really resembles“Icabod Crane!
He’s forced to take my feed down longramp at end of store-
Once clocked his speed at hundredmiles an hour or more!
I never in my life saw anyone godown ramp so fast!
There wasn’t a doubt if he lived hisbutt would be grass!
The speed flipped his skinny bod’ farabove clouds, I say!
But to my dismay he came down intruck bed of hay!!!!
He brushed himself off and was soonon his way.....
It appears to be an occurrence thathappens each day!
I’ve thought about parking ‘roundthe corner in the empty lot...
Then driving like a maniac when carleaves behind vacant spot!
I never get to back up to loadingramp with my Ford....
Somebody in car is there getting adfrom bulletin board!
I’ve actually considered parking atdock all night....
Or driving there early at dawn’s firstlight!
Once I came to feed store and muchto my delight...
There wasn’t a soul there anywherein sight!
You should have seen my bigColgate smile!
I guess even a blind squirrel will findan acorn once in awhile!
Now I hate to tell you there’s a moralyou have to endure......
If humans were less self-centered-we’d smile more, I’m sure!
Some of the challenges everyday inlife that we face...
Would never occur if we simply gaveeach other some space!

CATCH A RIDE TO THEMARSHALL & STERLING FINALS IN NEW YORK!
What is the Marshall & Sterling League? It is a nationalorganization that sponsors a year end final in Saugerties, NYeach September. Riders who join can accrue points that lead to aNational Ranking System by competing in the Equitation
Medals, Hunter Classics and Jumper Classics that are sponsored by the M&S League. Both Local showsand Rated Shows can hold sponsored classes – as the M&S League hopes to assist riders at the local levelto work toward the rated shows as a springboard to other Finals Events.
One local rider has been working very hard over the past year to qualify for this year’s Finals. Emily Terrybegan the year riding sales horses for other trainers in the M&S Children’s Medal – an event that is judgedon the rider. Emily has a young jumper who is coming along but not quite ready for a National Final – soshe focused on the Medal, borrowing sale horses and training horses to focus on improving her own ridingskills. Emily stayed in the top ten almost the entire year riding horses she had barely sat on for a fewminutes before entering the show ring. She is currently ranked 13th out of 782 riders across the country. Toher surprise, Emily also qualified both her young jumper and another jumper she has been “catch” ridingsince March! But her goal for this year was to make it to the Medal Finals in New York which she accom-plished by “catch riding” 12 different horses in the M&S Medal – her regular ride was sold just a fewweeks before the entry deadline, so Emily was offered a horse by another rider from the Tampa area to taketo the National Finals. “He’s probably the easiest horse I have had a chance to ride this year” says Emily. She only got to ride him for 20 minutes before having to send in entries and will not practice on him againuntil she arrives in New York! Emily rides and trains with Cornerstone Farm in Naples, Florida.Good Luck Emily – hard work always pays off in the end!
A BIG congratulations to long time Naples residentCaptain Jeff Player! With his gelding, Totally Golden Kid,also known as Moose, they swept the competition at thisyear’s 2008 Palomino Horse Breeders Association WorldShow held in Tulsa Oklahoma. In 2008 Moosehas won two (2) world championships, one (1) inOpen color and one (1) in Amateur color. Moosealso achieved one (1) reserve world championshipin Amateur three (3) year old geldings. Moose was the2007 Palomino Horse Breeders Association WorldChampion in the two (2) year old geldings andplaced seventh at the 2007 American Quarter HorseCongress in Open two (2) year old geldings.

Horseback Safaris - Standardone-hour, two-hour, or three-hour horseback safaris areavailable daily. HorsebackSafaris can be arranged forriders with varying levels ofexperience. All guests should beat least 12 years of age; 10 years of age is an acceptable agewith proven riding experience. Guests weighing more than275 pounds will need to be assessed by our EquestrianDirector before they are allowed to take a Horseback Safari.Call-in reservations are recommended in order to assure thatwe and our horses are ready for you.
A favorite with visitors is our two-night “Crescent JCattle Drive Weekend Safari,” which includes some training inFlorida Cowhunter skills of ridin’, ropin’ and cow cuttin’.(Florida cattlemen weren’t “cowboys” because hunting thosewild Spanish-descent cattle in Florida’s woods and swampswas a man’s job, they said.) Choice of campground dependson weather, type of group and recommendation of the ridinginstructors.
Another favorite is similar, but shorter – anOvernight Trail Ride Safari combined with a next-day“Rawhide Roundup.” More time is spent riding the wilder-ness trails of Forever Florida and learning about nature, lesson cowpoke skills.
Corporate Co-workers, Schoolteachers, ProfessionalClub, Flying Clubs, School Groups, Church Groups, Families,Friends, Scout troops or multi-troop Camporees – there areactivities and a campground on Forever Florida or theCrescent J Ranch that are just right for a bonding experience.See the Facilities and Events page for more details.
From a small primitive one-troop Scout Camp onthe Crescent J that has been used by Girl and Boy Scouts formore than 30 years, we expanded to a remote but up-scalecampground ‘way back in the wilderness of Forever Florida, then added two campgrounds in between and most recently,a large area “up front” (near the highway) that comfortablyholds up to twenty Scout troops for a big Camporee.
Variations on these basic campouts and safaris canbe worked out with our staff.
