Quality of Care

Big Three of Healthcare

Unfortunately, in the U.S., these elements are in direct competition with each other!

Everyone fits into one of two categories:

• They have some coverage foryou and your family.

• There is monthly premiumbased upon multiple criteria:age, health, gender, pasthealth issues…

• There is an annualdeductible. (this is an out- of-pocket expense)

• They’re somewhat protected!

They Don’thave

Insurance

They haveInsurance

• No premium, but NOCoverage.

• You have to pay CASHfor all medical services.• IF you can get them!

• This leaves your familyand your finances veryvulnerable!

AFFORDABLE HEALTHCAREFOR EVERYONE IN THE U.S.?

• Current estimates are that over 50 MillionAmericans are not covered by any form ofhealth insurance.

• These numbers are most likely SHORT of the realnumber due to the mass groups of self-employed,under-insured, and other factors.

• Those who actually do have insurance arepaying HUGE premiums and typically have HIGHdeductibles to meet annually.

Health Insurance Issues

• Current average costs for a family of four, with an80-20 co-pay after deductibles, are as follows:– Average annual deductible is around $2500– Average monthly premium is about $1255

• If employer sponsored, avg. of 30% is paid by employee– Average wait period before use is 60 days– Clauses for Pre existing, age, gender, etc…– Deductibles and premiums are expected to rise by 25%-

35% (each) over the next 3 years.– Estimates are that 30% of ALL US companies will

completely eliminate “Employer Sponsored” healthcare.

When your employee or their familymember is really ill, what do they do?

1. Call a Primary Care Physician?2. Go to a Walk-In clinic and sit for hours in a

small room with more very sick people?3. What if it is late at night, or if they are

traveling out of town?4. Is it a trip to the nearest Emergency Room?

Some Major issues we face today

Primary Care– Severe shortage of primary care physicians.

• Over 25,000 short now, est. to 130,000 by 2020• Over 15,000 short of RN’s now, to over 200,000 by 2020!

– Average wait for an appointment for a primary carephysician in US is 22 days! (if they have a PCP)

– Average cost for the visit with Insurance is $45– Without insurance it could be $125 or…– If there is no insurance, they probably won’t get an

appointment!

Some more issues…

Walk-in Clinic or Urgent Care– Shortage of primary care physicians.– Average wait for a walk in clinic is 2-3 hours!– Average cost for the visit is around $125.– You will most likely visit with a LPN or RN.– This can go against your insurance deductible,

but is cash out of pocket.– You will likely pay retail for your prescriptions.

Page 11: Businessto businessppp jun 2012

Almost 70% of all E.R. visits areNOT life threatening emergencies.

Emergency Room Care– Severe shortage of ER physicians.

• 27% of ERs closed in 2011 due to this and financial issues.– Average wait in an ER is 6-8 hours!– Average cost for the ER visit is over $1500.– This can go against your insurance deductibles,

but is still cash out of pocket.– If you have no insurance you will be billed

immediately, and have few options to resolve.• OVER 60% of all bankruptcies are caused by

unpaid medical bills.
