RATIONALE.I believe to fulfil the brief there is an importance to link all the items of the collection with the branding of the foundation. The butterfly as a symbol, will form the basis of the collection. Subtle or bold the form of the butterfly will be deeply embedded in each piece. The customer, teenagers to young adult women aged from 13-25 needs to be considered. The Sportsgirl customer is conscious of current fashion trends, where bright colours, thick cuffs, chunky rings, feathers and geometric patterns are common place. For the collection, I will create 3 separate pieces, with 4 different colour options. Each colour gathers it’s inspiration from a different species of butterfly. White, from the Bolboreta. Black and orange from the monarch. Blue from the Ulysses, which is also a colour strongly associated with the foundation. These four colour variations will be available on each piece. Ring, cuff and the pocket watch. Also the pocket watch will hang on a long chain. Acrylic cast sheet will be used for the rings and cuffs, as it is a cheap material, with many colour variations achieving an outstanding result. For the watch, a moulded polycarbonate would be used to ensure strength and longevity with a plated silver chain and clasp. Although for visualisation purposes, the models will be made with additive manufacturing in nylon then painted.
Week 1. Brief selection.I selected the butterfly foundation as it had a commercial viability about it
which i have not worked with yet. Also, being aimed at the teenage girl market
it is something i am not completetly comfortable with but an area that will
build my skills as a designer
Week 5.Send watch design off top additive
manufacturer Shapeways in the netherlands. Source acrylic for cuffs and
rings. Work out a method for bending acrylic
and make mould for cuffs.
Week 10.Shoot video and high quality photos for
folio/marketing material.Edit video and post to vimeo.
Plan all onine material, screen grabs with my jewelery in place.
Buy chains for necklaces.
Week 2. Research market, target audience and get a feel for the needs that need to be
fulfilled by the brief. The jewelry is for a charity so the need
for low cost production is essential, while still maintaining a connection with styles
and trends.
Week 6.Prepare folio of progress so far for mid semester presentation. 3d prints should
have arrived but didn’t.
Week 11.Assemble folio to as high a quality
achievable. Discuss with Maria on things I need to build folio to be more cohesive. And prepare any material i have missed
out on.
Week 3.Sketch concepts for collection. The col-lection will consist of 3 different pieces, with four colour iterations available in
each.A ring, a cuff and a pocket watch to be worn on the neck. The colour spectrum
will be related to species of butterfly.
Mid semester break, Week 7+8.Plan packaging, start story boards for
video. Start to assemble folio for final hand in.
Paint ADM models, if they arrive on time.
Week 12+13+14.Continue to build a stronger folio and create a way to display models/ pass
around models.Prepare to present to butterfly
foundation.
Week 4.Start cad of designs. Solid works, com-
bined with keyshot renderings to realise the forms and materials that could be
used.
Week 9Further develop video and folio.
Week 15Present to the class and foundation.
Prepare for the exhibition.

WHITEWhite is always a classic, timeless colour. Coming from the Bolboreta, adding a more subtle option than the other colours of the collection.
BLUEThe ulysses butterfly is coloured with a deep blue, fitting current trends and the theme of the collection
ORANGEdrawing inspiration from the monarch butterfly.

PRICINGwatches
http://graftconcepts.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/injection_molding_tool.jpg
Tooling for the watches would cost approximately $10,000. set up for tooling and changing colours is an additional cost that cannot be calculated without getting an industry quote. the amount of material used for each watch is around 5500mm^3. which equals around 55 cents. watch motors and hands range from $2-$6. Chain with clasp and rings to hold watch no more than $2 each piece. face and photo holder $0.50 each.
Considering cost of parts, if 10,000 units were ordered. The cost would be approximately $6.05 plus shipping and assembly. 50,000 units- approximately $5.25 1000 units- approximately $15.50
PRICINGrings
Laser cutting with proper nesting (sheet management) could allow for over 2256 rings on an industry size sheet. It took me around 3 minutes to bend each ring around a mould. This time could be shortened and made more accurate with better moulds and methods of heating. The material needed for each ring would cost approximately $0.14. Laser cutting, bending and packaging would result in the product costing around $1.50 a piece.
PRICINGcuffs
Laser cutting, approximately 2 minutes per cuff, 1 for ring. This was on the RMIT laser cutter which runs slower than industrial machines, so price will be approximate. You can fit 247 cuffs or more on one industry size sheet of 1220x2440mm. If 247 fit on a sheet costing around $300, then each cuff would cost $1.22 in material. To laser cut, bend and package the pieces would be under 5 minutes of work. I estimate the pieces would cost under $2.50 per cuff if a reasonable quantity were ordered..
