Bold and brash, innovative in design and technology…are you sure you’re talking about a sport-utility? Indeed we are. Ford has crafted a winner with its completely redesigned 2008 Escape. “A lot of people who see the new Escape are falling in love with it,” says Neil Casimir, sales consultant at Fred Beans Ford in Doylestown. “It’s fun to drive, good looking, reliable and safe—which is on everybody’s mind. And with the hybrid, you save the environment and get ridiculously great fuel mileage at the same time.” Since 2001: an Escape odyssey Ford engineers and designers seem determined to win over those who have remained lukewarm to the Escape’s charms since its roll-out for model year 2001. Taking their cue from the popular F-150 and Explorer, they developed a more muscular look with a lot of chrome outside and a more integrated, attractive interior. For example, Casimir says, “the radio face, with its brushed aluminum-like look and feel, merges into the rest of the console. Ford’s other radios aren’t like that.” Three years after the first Escape, the gas-electric Escape Hybrid hit the highway—the first SUV with hybrid technology. And what a long way it’s come in four short years. “The Hybrid exceeds anything else on the market, technologically speaking. Unlike some hybrids, where the electric motor assists the gas-powered engine, the Escape Hybrid is engineered to run fully on the electric motor at lower speeds. So you get virtually unlimited mileage driving around town, with your braking recharging the battery.” Feature-rich, trimmed to suit Ford retained Escape’s three trim levels but changed what goes into them. The XLS, XLT and Limited run from the XLS’s base in the high teens to around $30,000 for a fully loaded Limited. The XLS is also available with a manual transmission, which might make it more appealing to some people. The Escape is available in 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder. Along with an impressive list of standard features—airbags all around, for one—are popular trim packages that appeal to different tastes. “The ride is a lot smoother, and I feel safer with more ‘meat’ around the truck,” says Casimir. “It’s drop-dead gorgeous. Bold and brash, innovative indesign and technology…are you sureyou’re talking about a sport-utility?

Indeed we are. Ford has crafted awinner with its completely redesigned2008 Escape.

“A lot of people who see the newEscape are falling in love with it,”says Neil Casimir, sales consultant atFred Beans Ford in Doylestown. “It’s fun to drive, good looking, reliable and safe—which is oneverybody’s mind. And with thehybrid, you save the environment and get ridiculously great fuel mileage at the same time.”

Since 2001: an Escape odyssey Ford engineers and designers seemdetermined to win over those whohave remained lukewarm to theEscape’s charms since its roll-out for

model year 2001. Taking their cuefrom the popular F-150 and Explorer, they developed a more muscular lookwith a lot of chrome outside and amore integrated, attractive interior.

For example, Casimir says, “the radioface, with its brushed aluminum-likelook and feel, merges into the rest ofthe console. Ford’s other radios aren’tlike that.”

Three years after the first Escape, thegas-electric Escape Hybrid hit thehighway—the first SUV with hybridtechnology. And what a long way it’scome in four short years.

“The Hybrid exceeds anything else onthe market, technologically speaking.Unlike some hybrids, where the electric motor assists thegas-powered engine, the EscapeHybrid is engineered to run fully on the electric motor at lower speeds. So you get virtually unlimited mileagedriving around town, with yourbraking recharging the battery.”

The XLS, XLT and Limited runfrom the XLS’s base in the high teensto around $30,000 for a fully loadedLimited. The XLS is also available witha manual transmission, which mightmake it more appealing to somepeople.

The Escape is available in 2-wheeldrive, 4-wheel drive, 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder. Along with an impressivelist of standard features—airbags allaround, for one—are popular trimpackages that appeal to differenttastes.

“The ride is a lot smoother, and I feelsafer with more ‘meat’ around thetruck,” says Casimir. “It’s drop-deadgorgeous. I really think Ford madethe right move with this vehicle.”

YourAutoRewardsPointsCeleste and Dave Wetzel2008 Saturn VUESaturn of Doylestown Savings: $1,858

This new VUE is the Wetzelfamily’s eighth Saturn and is drivenmainly by Celeste. A few yearsago, with her children grown,Celeste followed her heart andentered a new career: kindergartenteacher. Dave tends to follow hishead, though, when it comes totaking care of his cars.

“I think Steve Zduncyk (servicemanager) is the best,” says Dave, who takes all five of the familyvehicles to Steve because his teamdelivers consistently excellentresults. “We’re ecstatic about theservice we get from yourorganization.”

Last issue we told you whatautomotive extras we’d love to see inour next new car or truck. Apparently, the engineers and designers werealready working on some of them. Here is a sampling, coming soon to a driveway near you.

Getting thereA heavy-duty hybrid gearbox, maybethe most complex transmission everinstalled in an automobile, will boostfuel economy by as much as 25percent in such large SUVs as theChevy Tahoe and Dodge Durango this fall.

Push a button, start your car: now notjust for the rich guys. Find it onNissan’s Versa and others. Push anotherbutton, slim down: Ford’s new SuperDuty pickup folds its side mirrors in or retracts them 3 inches.

When Cadillac’s revamped CTS debutsthis fall, it will sport General Motors’most powerful engine—and one of itsmost advanced. The 3.6-liter V-6, withits 300hp, high-pressure, direct fuel-injection system, special pistons andlow weight, also has special insulationon the injectors that make it quiet, as well.

Getting there in comfortSpeaking of quiet, the Ford EscapeHybrid’s drivetrain is so quiet thatengineers were able to pinpoint andreduce other noisemakers…resulting in improvements they passed along tothe gasoline-powered version of thepopular SUV. [Read more aboutEscape on page 1.]

Hate sipping that sun-warmed can ofsoda? Reach instead for an air-conditioning-cooled pop from the ChillZone, a storage bin in the glove boxthat holds four 12-ounce cans. This oneis standard on several Chrysler models.

The Dodge Caliber has illuminatedcupholder rings that help youaccurately perch your hot cup of coffeein its cradle during those dark-of-nightforays. The center console cupholdersin the 2008 Dodge Avenger sedan andSebring convertible can cool yourbeverage to 35 degrees or heat it to 140. [Read more about Sebring on page 6.]

Allergies? Nissan has put natural grapeseed polyphenol into its air filters tobond with certain particles that normalfilters don’t catch—like dust mites, cedar pollen and diesel soot—forcleaner cabin air.

Getting there safelyWake up and pay attention! That’swhat the “lane departure warningsystem” tells you by gently vibratingthe steering wheel or seat or bybeeping. You slip too close to thecenter line or the road’s edge, and the vehicle “catches your drift” and let’s you know about it.

Here’s a feature that targetspedestrians—so to speak. The latestVolkswagen and Audi vehicles’ frontgrills are made softer and with more“give” to meet the European Union’spedestrian safety rules.

General Motors now offers 13 vehicleswith a heated windshield wiper fluid

system to clear the glass of ice andfrost. And already in luxury cars butcoming soon to your budget, cruisecontrol technology that tells you whenyou’re getting too close to the vehicleahead.

Because we canHo-hum, this DVD is so boring! Not toworry! Chrysler’s back-seat television isavailable in its 2008 Town & Countryand Dodge Grand Caravan…withchannels geared to the interests of the kids.

General Motors is working on plastics and metals for vehicle components thatrepair themselves after minor accidentsby snapping back to their originalshapes when you apply heat orelectricity.

This is too easy: a button on the Ford Expedition that folds the third-row seats flat automatically…press itagain and the seats are up and ready. And Chrysler has added Swivel ’n Gosecond-row seats that spin so you canplay cards or chat with the guys in theback.

Wait…weren’t some of these on ourwish list in the last issue? Darn, we’regood prognosticators.

The fourth Thursday in April isalways a special day for Fred BeansDoylestown employees. That’s the daywhen you might very well find a kidat the cashier’s desk, a pint-sizedsalesperson in the showroom or a“short employee” filing papers in anoffice.

That’s Take Our Daughters and Sonsto Work Day®. This year marked the tenth that Fred Beans’ owndaughters—who spent quite a fewhours of their youth at their father’sworkplace—organized their version of the national event. After a morningspent at the adults’ work sites, kidsand parents came to the Ford store for lunch and a terrific program.

Tapping your passionIt isn’t easy to keep close to 100youngsters and their adults engagedand entertained for nearly an hour. But Peter Catalanotto, award-winninglocal children’s author and illustrator, did it easily. He spoke enthusiasticallyabout his work as a professional artistand writer, about creating art—oranything you feel passionate about—and how he gets his ideas.

Catalanotto passionately encouragesyoung people to think of themselvesas artists, even if they aren’t grown upand aren’t getting paid for their work.“If you draw, you are an artist now.”

He told them to use the two wordswriters love: “what” and “if.” “What if”something in your life happened alittle differently? How could you usethat to make a story more interestingfor others?

“Try new things, new ideas, newtechniques,” he urged his listeners.

A classic convertible carries anappeal that roadsters and sedanscan’t match. When designers takeone such classic and completelyredesign it, adding impressivefeatures but keeping its pricingreasonable, the result is worthclose examination.

That’s the 2008 Chrysler Sebringconvertible, all-new and “all-uring.”

“The car is extremely classy,” saysDavid DeFazio, sales manager atFred Beans Dodge Chrysler Jeep inDoylestown. “It looks like a fifty-thousand-dollar convertible—thatyou can buy for under $30,000.”

Options in triplicateIn simplest terms, the ’08 Sebringconvertible has two doors, seatsfour and is available in three trimlevels: base, Touring and Limited. The three available engines are the2.4L, 4-cylinder World engine; the2.7L flexible-fuel V6, which runson ethanol or gas; and thepowerful 3.5L V6 that generates235hp. Unlike any otherconvertible, its roof also is offeredin three choices: cloth, vinyl or aretractable hardtop.

The basic version starts around$26,000; Touring runs to around$33,000; completely loaded, theLimited can be $38,000.

Now that those details are out ofthe way, what’s so appealingabout this car?

Edgy and responsive“The styling on it is phenomenal,”says DeFazio. “It’s edgy, anddramatically different from theprevious version to this. It hastighter handling for a more refinedride, a lot of acceleration—especially with the 3.5L V6. It’s very responsive.”

DeFazio also likes other changesChrysler has made. The Limitedcomes standard with wood-grainedaccents over silver-colored bezelsand a wood-grained and leathersteering wheel.

By adding several inches to thelength, designers have created aconvertible that’s “very roomy. I’m over 6-3 and I can even sit inthe back seat. And even with thehardtop retracted, you can still fittwo golf bags in the trunk.”

Sounds like a plan!

Sebring shows off dramatic changes

In May, we received some greatnews from our friends inMississippi. The Hancock CountyHuman Resources Agency ChildDevelopment program has beenrecognized as the State ofMississippi’s “Child Care Providerof the Year.”

Executive Director Lora Mederosshared the agency’s success withthe Bucks Mont Katrina ReliefProject, which built the newHancock County ChildDevelopment Center. The $1.2million facility, furnished with$113,000 in contributions fromFred Beans employees, hasbecome a model for centersacross the state.

It feels very good to have broughthope to so many people whoselives changed when Katrina blewthrough in August of 2005. I’m proud of our employees forrising to the challenge for thiseffort, as well as for the many actsof kindness they do every day.

…as great as your sales team is, yourservice department has managed to beatthem! I want to particularly commend toyou Mercedes Vega. Mercedes…oversaw the process and stayed incommunication with me until my car wasjust as good as new. They even detailedit after the repairs were complete! I really feel that Mercedes went aboveand beyond her job and even FredBeans’ standards to make sure I wassatisfied. …Mercedes worked very hardto make sure I would have only goodthings to say about the servicedepartment at Fred Beans VW of Devon.

This is the second email I have ever sentto a corporation with whom I dobusiness. The other was also to FredBeans regarding service. To be honest, Ifeel like I am dreaming. I cannot believehow efficiently my car was serviced atlittle expense to me. I was kept informedthe whole time, with Mike McGinty[Saturn of Doylestown] calling both myhome and work numbers. Get this, I even found a card in my car where myprogrammed radio stations had beenwritten, so they could be re-programmedafter the work! A touch like this is trulyimpressive. Unless there are drasticchanges, I would never consider buyingor having my car serviced anywhere but Fred Beans. It is rare these days tofind a merchant one can trust so much, but I am amazed with your entire service team.

Ed’s got theEdge, and he’s liking itHi, everyone,

I just wanted you all to know the2007 Ford Edge really has the edge.

On a past beautiful weekend, I filled the tank in Allentown…drove to Doylestown over the hillsin traffic (good ol’ Route 313) andaveraged 18.7 mpg. With thosemiles remaining in the calculation, I rolled into Avalon, N.J., onSaturday and had a reading of 21.7 mpg (including a 30-minutedelay on the expressway goingthrough Philly). Feeling good aboutthat, I reset the computer for thetrip back to Doylestown and wasaveraging close to 23 mpg on thehighway.

The roof was open, giving somewind resistance, but what a joy, I could still listen to the music onthe radio while it was open—and Ionly have one good ear.

This is one sweet, smooth-ridingvehicle. It also was getting a lot of“eyeballing” while sitting on thestreet in downtown Stone Harbor.

Ah, after all of that, the tank isgetting a little low. I guess I’dbetter fill it up tonight.

Feature-rich, trimmed to suitFord retained Escape’s three trimlevels but changed what goes intothem.
