BuiltWorks 2010 ManualVolume 1. Modeling basics

This document has been created with the intention to help the user of BuiltWorks 2010 software applica-tion to understand the basic tools, techniques and workflows working with BuiltWorks 2010 to createdemo models for self learning purposes. It is assumed that user of this manual is familiar with SolidWorks2010 software from Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp.

I. Creating a new file

1. Click New button (Standard toolbar).

2. In the dialog box New SolidWorks Document select Assembly and click OK.

3. Click Save (Standard toolbar).4. Enter a file name BW_Tutor1 in field File name and click Save .

II. Creating Grid Lines

1. To create Grid Lines click the Grid system button (BuiltWorks toolbar).

2. Enter Segment Parameters : between vertical Grid Lines 1 step in 6000 mm, between horizontalGrid Lines 1 step in 6000 mm. In Grid Level field enter 1 step in 8000 mm.

3. Close dialog box by clicking OK button. Grid lines will be created.

III. Creation of column member group between two points of the sketch

1. Click Member Group button (BuiltWorks toolbar) to create a column members group.

2. In field Member Profile select Database . From steel sections database select:

Profiles > European > I Shape > HEA (IPBL) > HE240A

3. In the Member Orientation preview window select central base point.4. Select point on 1 and A grid lines intersection on lower and highest grid level. HE240A column

member will be created.

5. In the same way create all other columns.

6. Close dialog box by clicking the OK button.

IV. Creation of main beam member group between two points of thesketch

1. Click Member Group button (BuiltWorks toolbar) to create the main beam member group.

2. In field Member Profile select Database . From steel sections database select:

Profiles > European > I Shape > IPE > IPE270

3. In Member Orientation preview window select top central base point.4. Select sketch segments on A and B grid lines on the highest grid level to create main beams.

5. Close dialog box by clicking the OK button.

V. Creation of secondary beam array

1. Click Member Array button (BuiltWorks toolbar) to create the secondary beam array.

2. In field Member Profile select Database . From steel sections database select:

Profiles > European > I Shape > IPE > IPE240

3. Enter number of secondary beams. Select Create start member and Create end member .4. In the Member Orientation preview window, select bottom central base point.5. Select sketch elements on A and B grid lines.

6. Secondary beams array will be created. Close dialog box by clicking the OK button.

VI. Model export to analysis program - STAAD.Pro

1. You can configure your default export program in BuiltWorks toolbar > BuiltWorks Options >Export / Import tab.

2. For model export to analysis software click BW Export > Export to analysis button (BuiltWorkstoolbar).

3. From Export Data field select BW objects and Export all geometries . In Geometry parameters field

set units to METER. In Design parameters field select EC3 design code and also select Createunification groups , CHECKand SELECTparameters.

4. After clicking OK button STAAD.Pro will be started.

VII. Model Analysis in STAAD.Pro

1. Create and assign fixed support for columns.

2. Create new Load Case for self weight, uniform load 15 kN/m for all secondary beams and 20 kNconcentrated load in the middle of the span for start and end secondary beams.

5. Click Result > Update Properties button. Save file and close STAAD.Pro.

VIII. Import analysis results from STAAD.Pro

1. For analysis results import click BW Export > Import analysis result button (BuiltWorks toolbar).

2. Select analysis file and click OK .

3. In the Import Analysis Results dialog box select all members and click Update .

4. BuiltWorks generates the message that the 10 members from 10 have been replaced. Press OK.

IX. Member Alignment

1. For member alignment click Member alignment button (BuiltWorks toolbar).

2. In the Alignment dialog box Object selection field Align to window select top of column and asObjects to align select top of main beam and bottom of secondary beam.

3. Click OK . All members will be aligned by the top of the column.

X. Creating a Connection

1. Click Connection button (BuiltWorks toolbar).

2. In the Connection dialog box Members of connection field select column member.

3. Select beam member and from field Type of Cutting select By normal . Click OK . Beam memberwill be cut off.

XI. Copying a connection

1. Click Show Connections button (BuiltWorks toolbar).

2. Left click on blue dot in graphic view. Select Copy Connection button.

3. Connection preview form window will be opened. Column member colored as red. Select columnmember in the model graphic view.

4. In Connection preview form window beam member colored as red. Select beam member in themodel graphic view.

5. For selected members connection will be created and a scrap by rules of copied connection will bemade.

6. Repeat this action for all connections at the model top and close copying connection previewwindow.

7. Hide blue dots representing created connections – push Hide Connections button (BuiltWorkstoolbar)

XII. Creating an End Plate

1. To create the end plate click End Plate button (BuiltWorks toolbar).

2. In End Plate dialog box Method of creation field select End plate on body option and the columnmember in graphic window. Enter end plate thickness 30 mm, end plate type Quadratic , end plate

dimensions 450 mm.

3. Click OK . End Plate will be created.4. In the same way create all another end plates.

XIII. Generating a Drawing

1. To assign cut list properties for all members select BuiltWorks > Update Cut-list Properties button(Standard toolbar).

2. To generate drawings for assembly and members select Drawing Generator button (BuiltWorkstoolbar).

3. In opened Drawing generation window mark parts for which you want to generate drawings and

push Generate button. Drawings for selected parts will be created.
