Albacore Research has undisputedly pioneered ship construction software for the PC. The introduction of ShipCAM in 1990 brought surface based plate expansion to the ship building industry, the speed and accuracy of the software remaining unmatched to this date. ShipCAM was complemented by CAD-Link in 1996 (structural modelling), and the two were integrated via a common database in 1997. ShipConstructor runs inside AutoCAD and uses all the standard, native AutoCAD commands, thereby requiring a remarkably short training period: the user is productive and back on-line in a few hours only. Employers also benefit from the large number of AutoCAD educated draughtsmen available on the job market. The 3D model is created using ordinary AutoCAD 2D drawing commands. Running on ordinary PCs, ShipConstructor caters to the needs of all shipyards, design offices and steel preparation bureaus, from the small operation to the large industrial concerns. A major strength of ShipConstructor is the fundamental philosophy of the companies behind it: features and functions are developed mostly following the requests, recommendations and guidelines of our customers and users. Hull, HVAC and Penetrations are recently completed modules, while all the others are significantly enhanced on an on-going basis. Moreover, for the convenience of planners and strategic management, Manager is available as an unlocked module (essentially stand-alone, does not require AutoCAD).
