Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) was founded in 1913 as the first of the American actor unions. Equity’s mission is to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Today, Equity represents more than 40,000 actors, singers, dancers and stage managers working in hundreds of theatres across the United States. Equity members are dedicated to working in the theatre as a profession, upholding the highest artistic standards.

Equity negotiates wages and working conditions and provides a wide range of benefits including health and pension plans for its members. Through its agreement with Equity, this theatre has committed to the fair treatment of the actors and stage managers employed in this production.

AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. For more information, visit www.actorsequity.org.

• When coming to the theatre, at The Warehouse or anywhere else, you are taking part in a 2,500+ year old tradition that engages you with the community in which you live. With this in mind, please be courteous to the other audience members. You are part of their experience and they are part of yours.

• Watching a play requires you to think. Enjoy yourself with your brain ON. You can’t go back if you miss something—this is live and in the flesh.

• There are many different types and styles of plays. We offer you the opportunity to attend a pre-show talk before our Sunday matinees which will put the play you are about to watch into context, and we also have information about our production available to you in our lower lobby, but do your own homework. You will enjoy the experience more if you do a little bit of research into the play and the playwright. The Internet is your friend!

• Don’t be afraid to laugh...there are laughs even in tragedies. It’s ok!

Latecomers: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management and in seats that avoid disrupting other patrons and the performance. Refunds are not available except in the case of performance cancellation. If you cannot attend, we can accept your unused ticket as a donation. Please return your ticket to the box office to obtain a tax receipt.

Smoking: Smoking is NOT PERMITTED anywhere in the building. Those who must smoke should do so on the public sidewalk away from the building, so as not to bother other patrons. Please do not smoke just outside the doors as the smoke drifts back inside; instead, go to the end of the ramp to the “patio” area.

Cameras and recording devices: It is ILLEGAL to record a performance, with any media, in whole or in part. If you record a performance in whole or in part we will ask you to stop recording during the live performance. You will be embarrassed. The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited.

Cell Phones, Beepers & Alarm Watches: Please turn them off BEFORE the performance begins. Please do not use the vibrate option but, instead, turn them completely off.

Lost and Found: Found items should be given to the House Manager. Queries regarding lost items may be made by calling 235-6948.

Recycling & Trash: Please help us keep the theatre clean by discarding trash in the lobby trash cans or by handing it to us for recycling. Thank you!

Your Image: Attendance at The Warehouse Theatre is your tacit permission for us to use your still image for marketing and/or fundraising purposes. Attendance at The Warehouse Theatre is your tacit permission for us to use your moving image and recorded comments for marketing and/or fundraising purposes.

Elisa is often asked, “What is a dramaturg?,” to which she replies, “Although it may sound like something scooped up in a thespian dog park, a dramaturg, or literary manager functions a lot like a theater’s own Sherlock Holmes---always searching for answers, turning up new evidence, and drawing conclusions---in hopes of uncovering the secret to a killer play.”

The purpose of the endowment fund is to provide financial support, in perpetuity, to WHT in its ongoing mission to provide Greenville, The Upstate and South Carolina the highest quality professionally produced theatre art possible. This fund helps finance efforts to maintain and continually augment the level of professional artistry on The WHT’s main stage.

The Harriet Wyche Endowment was established in August 2013 with a generous gift from Mimi Wyche in honor of her mother. The endowment is managed by The Community Foundation of Greenville.

In December 2013 The Graham Foundation awarded the theatre a $50,000 challenge grant to support the endowment. The foundation matched, dollar for dollar, gifts given to the endowment. The campaign was completed in November and we cannot say thank you enough to all who have supported the endowment, enabling WHT to excite, amaze, and challenge generations to come!

PLAYWRIGHT BIOGRAPHYChristopher Durang’s plays include A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN FILM (Tony nomi-nation, Best Book of a Musical), THE ACTOR’S NIGHTMARE, SISTER MARY IGNATIUS EXPLAINS IT ALL FOR YOU (Obie Award, Off-Broadway run, 1981-83), BEYOND THER-APY (on Broadway in 1982, with Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow), BABY WITH THE BATHWATER (Playwrights Horizons, 1983), THE MARRIAGE OF BETTE AND BOO (Pub-lic Theater, 1985; Obie Award, Dramatists Guild Hull Warriner Award), LAUGHING WILD (Playwrights Horizons, 1987), and DURANG DURANG (an evening of six plays at Manhattan Theatre Club, 1994, including the Tennessee Williams parody FOR WHOM THE SOUTHERN BELLE TOLLS). In 1996, he was commissioned by the Rodgers and Hammerstein Foundation to write a new book for the popular musical BABES IN ARMS. SEX AND LONGING was commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater and was presented on Broadway in fall 1996 starring Sigourney Weaver. THE IDIOTS KARAM-AZOV, a full-length play with music written with Albert Innaurato, was revived at the American Repertory Theatre. His play BETTY’S SUMMER VACATION (Drama Desk Award nomination) had its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons in February 1999 to great critical acclaim and sold-out houses and was extended three times. It was the recipient of four Obie Awards, for distinguished playwriting, directing, acting, and set design. His new musical (with music by Peter Melnick), ADRIFT IN MACAO premiered at New York Stage and Film in the summer of 2002. MRS. BOB CRATCHIT’S WILD CHRISTMAS BINGE was commissioned by Pittsburgh’s City Theater and had its world premiere in November 2002. In the early '80s, he and Sigourney Weaver co-wrote and performed in their acclaimed Brecht-Weill parody DAS LUSITANIA SONGSPIEL and were both nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Best Performer in a Musical. In 1993, he sang and tried to dance in the five-person Off-Broadway Sondheim revue PUTTING IT TOGETHER, with Julie Andrews at Manhattan Theatre Club. And he played a singing Congressman in CALL ME MADAM with Tyne Daly as part of “Encores.” He can be heard on cast recordings of both productions. In mov-ies, he has appeared in "The Secret of my Success," "Mr. North," "The Butcher's Wife," "Housesitter," "The Cowboy Way," "The Object of my Affection," "Simply Irresistible," and 'The Out of Towners," among others. For television, he wrote for a Carol Burnett special called "Carol and Robin and Whoopi and Carl;" and for PBS’ series “Trying Times,” he wrote a teleplay called "The Visit" starring Swoosie Kurtz as Wanda, the upsetting houseguest. He’s written several screenplays, including "The House of Hus-bands" (co-authored with Wendy Wasserstein), "The Adventures of Lola" for Tri-Star and director Herbert Ross, "The Nun who Shot Liberty Valance," and his own adap-tation of SISTER MARY… which aired on Showtime with Diane Keaton in the title role; and two sitcom pilots, "Billy and Meg" (for Fox Television) and "Dysfunction! - the TV Show" for Warner Brothers. He hopes one day they will be produced, perhaps in heaven. He has an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. Early in his career, he won a Guggenheim, a Rockefeller, the CBS Playwriting Fellowship, the Lecompte du Nouy Foundation grant, and the Kenyon Festival Theatre Playwriting Prize. In 1995 he won the prestigious three-year Lila Wallace Readers Digest Award; as part of his grant, he ran a writing workshop for adult children of alcoholics. Since 1994 he has been co-chair with Marsha Norman of the Playwriting Program at the Juilliard School in Manhattan. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild Council.

MARK HIS WORDSOur resident dramaturg, Elisa M. Golden, recently conducted an interview with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike director, Mark Waldrop. The following is their exchange:

EMG: If you could choose one character from the play, who would you say you identify with most and why? MW: Vanya, hands down. He and I are around the same age, and the first time I heard his rant contrasting the world of his childhood with the world of today, I thought, “Wow, I could have written that myself!”

EMG: In many ways, SEINFELD and Chekhov plays have something in common --- they make something out of the ordinary day to day existence. As a director, how do you imagine Christopher Durang hoped to perpetuate this Chekhovian element when he penned Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike? MW: Durang opens the play with a VERY Chekhovian exchange between Vanya and Sonia in which they bemoan the pointless dull routine of their lives. As the play proceeds, many of Chekhov’s themes are woven in: the wish for/fear of change, the threatened loss of one’s home, the hunger for meaningful connection. But along the way Durang spikes the recipe (pun intended) with some very un-Chekhovian elements, including exhibitionism, dwarf costumes, and voodoo. Durang is an absurdist. It’s the mix of high and low comedy that gives the play its juice and makes it so much fun to direct.

EMG: As it is Irina’s “name day” in Chekhov’s The Three Sisters, so is it Nina’s “name day” in this play. What is your “name day”? MW: For those who don’t know, a “name day” is a celebration, similar to a birthday, based on the date on the Christian Calendar of Saints honoring the saint with whom you share a name. According to the Internet, the name day for “Mark” is October 24th, or May 5th, or April 25th. This is why I hate the Internet (note my first answer). Based on the number of citations, I guess April 25th wins. It is also International Malaria Awareness Day, which I find auspicious.

EMG: Christopher Durang has said that Chekhov’s The Three Sisters is his favorite of the playwright’s dramas. What is your favorite Chekhov play and why? MW: I guess I’d have to say The Seagull, because of Arkadina. I seem to find neurotic aging actresses irresistible as characters. All About Eve is my favorite movie for the same reason. In this play, Masha is a very contemporary and amus-ing take on that archetype.

EMG: Mark, both you and playwright Christopher Durang have New Jersey ties. Can you explain how this Garden State dynamic influenced your career? MW: Durang grew up in New Jersey, about an hour from New York City. I now own a home in New Jersey, also about an hour from the city. As far as influence on our careers, the proximity to NYC is everything. Also, Durang did a lot of his early theater-going at The Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. I have directed several shows there, and my husband, Patrick Parker, is Paper Mill’s Associate Artistic Director.

EMG: In Act I, Cassandra recites a fictitious speech that foretells a myriad of bi-zarre prophecies. What would she say about the upcoming presidential election? MW: I think even the exalted language of Greek Tragedy would fail her on this subject.

EMG: Finally, if Anton Chekhov were to miraculously appear in The Warehouse Theatre audience, what do you think his reaction would be to this hilarious homage? MW: Being a sly humorist himself, I think he’d laugh loudly and often -- and take this production as the loving valentine it’s intended to be.

“A funny, moving, altogether wonderful drama. . . a heartening reminder that a keen focus on life’s small moments can pay off in a big way onstage.”– The New York Times

An award-winning comedy about marriage, responsibility and Ukrainian escorts.

A World Premiere Production.

“Vivid wordplay and snappy, sugar-coated insults... Margaret Raether’s droll adaptation is as dry as a well-made martini and equally potent.” – Daily Herald

“These miracles are what make All Is Calm such a pure example of what was meant when angels first declared, “Peace on Earth.” – Star Tribune

“…though the play presents a picture of a desperate marriage, and is fueled by prodigious quantities of alcohol, it is also wonderfully funny.” – Telegraph
