Life Before War

Paul Revere was born in 1734.

He became a silversmith (person who made things out of silver and gold) like his father (Apollos Rivoire).

Paul lived in Boston Massachusetts.

Paul Revere learned this trade from his

father. Silversmiths created items out of gold

or silver. Paul learned that this job required skill

and diligence Diligence means to work hard for a

long time no matter what problem may come.

Paul Revere belonged to a group called the

Sons of Liberty. These men believed that America should be

free of British rule. This was the group that performed the Boston

Tea Party.

The American Revolution began in 1775. The British has the best Navy in the world

and a large Army with plenty of supplies. The colonists had a small militia with no

uniforms and few weapons. When the colonists needed to get ready

for battle someone had to ride from house to house on a horse to let everyone know where to meet.

Towards the beginning of the war,

Paul Revere took a job as a mail carrier so that he could deliver important information and news to the colony leaders.

The Patriots and British were preparing to fight in Concord and Lexington.

In April of 1775, the British found out where the

colonists were keeping their weapons hidden. Paul Revere rode to tell everyone to move their

weapons to a new location. He also told the colonists he would warn them

when the British were coming. He would place lanterns in Boston’s Old North

Church steeple. One lantern if by land, and two if by sea.

Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride

On April 18, 1775 British soldiers started to march from Boston to Concord.

Their goal was to take the colonists weapons and arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock.

Midnight Ride

Paul Revere and two other men got on their horses and rode off to warn Adams and Hancock.

It was very dark and the roads were not smooth.

Revere had to avoid the British soldiers so that he would not be arrested.

The entire ride Paul Revere was warning the

colonists that, “The British are coming! The British are coming!”

He was a very courageous man.

At the end of the American Revolution a new nation was born. It would be called the United States of America.
