Thank-fully, modern science and medicine have evolved and givenus myriad sophisticated dentofacial treatments to turn backthe clock, and reverse the normal course of aging.

The main objective of Anti-Aging Dentistry is to focuson prevention of loss of natural facial structures that resultin the appearance of aging, and to restore the lower face toa more youthful iteration by utilizing all of the latest aspectsof Medicine Dentistry and Facial Esthetics.

As a healthcare provider, I strongly advocate for a bal-anced healthy lifestyle. Oral health is conclusively linked toAlzheimer’s disease, as well as diabetes and even heart dis-ease, as if you didn’t need another reason to floss!

Experts unanimously recommend a diet rich in un-processed foods, with plenty of healthy fruits and vegeta-bles, which, in addition to drinking plenty of water, willhelp keep you hydrated due to their fiber content. (Avoidthe killer fruits and veggies, such as potatoes and papayas.)Regular exercise will also go a long way to keep you look-ing young. Exercise, especially frequent cardiovascular andmuscle building activity, has been proven to increase pro-

duction of healthy hormones such as the recently highlytouted “Human Growth Hormone” or HGH.

Our own natural production of HGH depressinglypeaks at about age 17, and then gradually fades, rapidly atfirst as we age. HGH is a large molecule similar to estrogenand testosterone that humans produce naturally in our pi-tuitary gland (deep in our brainstems) and is released intothe bloodstream where it reaches all tissues, and interacts inmany ways to keep us younger, and make us healthier.

HGH is a virtual fountain of youth, proven to reducebody fat, increase lean muscle mass, elevate mood, strengthen bones, boost libido, support our immune sys-tem, speed healing and reduce wrinkles by rejuvenating ourskin. Synthetic HGH has been used for years by profes-sional athletes, as well as Hollywood superstars. Scienceshows us that its use, while effective, may alter pituitaryfunction, and its long term effects are still unknown.

There has been a huge push towards HGH precursors,or antecedents. Several companies have proven data, show-ing increases of up to 600 percent in natural HGH produc-tion, by our own pituitary glands; meaning that bysupplying the building blocks of this wonder molecule inlarge amounts, our bodies actually produce a significantlyelevated level of circulating HGH in our bloodstreams.

coated capsules, twohours after eating, andnot eating for anothertwo hours after inges-tion, they are able totravel to the right area ofthe small intestine to beefficiently absorbed formaximum uptake intothe blood stream, with-out being destroyed byour stomach’s acids.

This new develop-ment may alter who weare as a people, by al-lowing us to turn backthe clock so significant-ly, that we may need torethink our dreams ofextensive life longevity. There are very few stud-

ies that can show us what this increased level of HGH maydo, and it may take us many years to discover its unknownand unintended consequences, beneficial or harmful.

Periodontal or gum disease is a chronic low grade infec-tion that results in a change in bacterial growth, ultimatelycausing inflammation of the gums (Gingivae)—with asso-ciated bleeding, and loss of bone in the mouth, often lead-ing to the loss of teeth. Decay (dental decay and cavities, also known as “Dental Caries”) is a bacterial infection ofone or more teeth, leading to loss of tooth structure, andsubsequent infection of the dental nerve, or pulp, and ab-scess formation.

These two villains of oral health are the major cause ofdeterioration of the oral cavity, and surrounding structures, preventing their effects will arrest aging completely. Fur-thermore, reparative dental procedures will reverse agingand restore the mouth to close to pristine condition.

Effective regular preventive care, consisting of cleaning, deep cleaning, and in some cases even surgical interventionwill prevent gum disease from eroding bone around themouth. Beautiful, protective, and functional dental restora-tions such as crowns, veneers, and implant bridges canbring a broken down smile back to life, focusing on propercheek and lip support, color, shape, and arrangement for ayouthful smile. Unsightly gum recession, causing roots tobe exposed and look aged can now be successfully coveredby a new gum surgery technique called the “Chao Pinholesurgical technique,” which is a huge improvement from theolder, more painful gum grafts from the roof of the mouth.

We utilize orthodontics more these days due to revolu-tionary clear aligner systems, such as Invisalign, whichmoves teeth gradually into the ideal positon through a se-ries of custom clear trays, worn 22 hours a day, and changedout every two weeks. Aligned teeth wear better and moreevenly, preventing excessive and unsightly wear patterns, and the destruction of natural tooth shape.

Today’s hyper-stressed world has caused many of us tofind that we are heavy clenchers, or grinders, and we areputting a tremendous force on our teeth and jaws. Den-tistry can offer several different designs of “Bruxguards” ormouth guards that will allow tired muscles to relax, and in-sulate teeth from uneven wear due to excessive clenchingand grinding. This phenomenon, often called TMJ, canhave devastating effects on the youthfulness of our smiles.

To restore facial youth, gradual layering of dermal fillerssuch as Juvéderm using an amazing new technique called“Blunt Tip Cannula” (a thin, long flexible needle with ablunt end that we have happily renamed “Bruise-free FacialFiller” or “BFF”) keeps facial tissues firm, plump, andyouthful. This procedure can be done on your lunch break, and you can return to work immediately, with little to nopain, and almost no bruising or swelling.

Traditional dermal filler techniques with a regular needlecan cause pain, severe reversible swelling, and bruising. Ap-plied correctly, these safe clear viscus gels consisting ofHyaluronic acid can replace the fat, stimulate collagen pro-duction, and reform and rejuvenate lip shape that may havebeen lost over the years, including smoker’s lines. Syntheticcollagen, as well as one’s own fat, can also be injected intothe face to prevent a tired and sunken look. These proce-dures are routinely done by plastic surgeons, and can be suc-cessful. Fillers are best placed gradually over time, and willsignificantly hold off wrinkling, and aging skin appearance.I advocate placing these fillers early, so that facial volumewill not be lost, although when strategically placed, it can al-most completely restore an aging face to a youthful state.

Botox, a purified protein proven to reduce wrinkles, canbe used around the eyes (crow’s feet), the “number 11’s” be-tween the eyes (Glabellar muscle, also called frown lines),and across the forehead (Frontalis muscle) will slightly lifteyebrows, and can reduce migraines to give a more refreshedlook to the entire face. I find most of my patients areshocked that Botox can enhance someone’s appearance, giv-ing them a refreshed look, without making them look weird.

Sure, celebrities look like they are staying young, andwhile we can’t stop time, we can slow it down. With pre-vention and proper use of procedures and techniques, thereis no need to be long in the tooth, with the help of all oftoday’s exciting advances, we can greatly diminish its effectson our faces and psyche.
