Seminar on SEISMIC ISOLATION in Association with the Structural

Engineers World Congress (SEWC) and Japanese Society of Seismic isolation

Department of civil engineering

successfully conducted national

level workshop on” Seminar on

SEISMIC ISOLATION in

Association with S C the

Structural Engineers World

Congress (SEWC) and Japanese

Society of Seismic isolation” from

30th October 2017 to 1st November

2017.

Three Days Seminar on “Seismic

Isolation” was held from 30th

October to 01st of November 2017. Seismic isolation is one of the most important concepts for

earthquake engineering which can be defined as separating or decoupling the structure from its

foundation. In other words, Seismic isolation is a technique developed to prevent or minimize

damage to buildings or other structures during an earthquake. Seismic isolation is one of the

most popular means of protecting a structure against earthquake forces. This technology is not

yet very common, but a number of research activities are going on in order to investigate the

behavior of the isolated structures.

The main Objectives of the Seminar was to Promote Investigation and research on Seismic

Isolation for buildings, dissemination of Information on the proper usage of seismic isolation

and improvement of Seismic isolation technology, Exchanging information about seismic

isolation with researchers and industries along with Contributing to the development and

improvement of reliable seismic-resistant technology and to a safer living environment,

broadening of the interests of society.

Eminent Scientists from various universities and industries from Japan shared innovative

techniques to strengthen the buildings and the development works of passive, active and hybrid

devices used in designing safe structures.

The seminar brought structural engineers, architects, contractors, engineers, scientists,

researchers, manufacturers and others from around the country and abroad. The discussed areas

were of great benefit for the participants. Participants were enlightened with the most widely

used advance technologies in this domain. The knowledge shared by the eminent delegates and

the speakers aimed at practical implementation of these innovative devices fora better living.

Site Visits K& C VALLEY SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

The site visit to K & C valley treatment plant was organized to bring awareness among the students about

Operation and working of sewage treatment plant and give them a visual experience of the massive size of

the plant. To treat the wastewater generated in the Koramangala and Challaghatta valley, treatment plant at B

Nagasandra has been established. Primary treatment plant was established during 1974 and it was upgraded

to Secondary level during 1990. The capacity of the treatment plant was 163 MLD and the treatment process

adopted was Conventional Activated Sludge Process. Under Cauvery Water Supply Scheme (CWSS) Stage

IV Phase I, one more plant of 30 MLD capacity was established and Extended Aeration process was adopted.

Since the flow into the plant was exceeding 163 MLD, Board has provided an additional module of 55 MLD

capacity during 2006. Thus the total capacity of the treatment facility available is 248 MLD at K &

CValley. The visit was organized by Ms. Khushbu.K.Birawat, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Civil Engg., GAT

on 29.08.2017.

Site visit to Shoba:

A site visit to Shoba was arranged by Ms. Likhitha H and MsVarunaKoti, for the students of

3rd semester civil students to show them the detailing of building materials and construction

of buildings. The main objective of the visit being to make students understand how the

theoretical knowledge is filled in practice. The visit gave the chance for thestudents to

experience and observe the building materials of science which could not be gained

inclassrooms.
