CINEMA PRESTIGE

Russian distribution company Cinema Prestige acquired the CIS rights for the films Calm at Sea (La mer à l`aube, Germany, France, 2011), Barbara (Germany, 2012), Reality (France, Italy, 2012).

Calm at Sea. On the 20th of October 1941, three young communists shoot the German commander Hotz in the French port of Nantes. As a reprisal and deterrent, a furious Hitler orders the execution of a hun-dred prisoners, mostly communists and resisters. Among them, the 17 year old Guy Môquet, the son of a communist member of Parlia-ment. This real story, focusing on Môquet and his friends in the de-tainee camp, shows the conflicting interests between the German high commander Von Stülpnagel and his entourage in France, Berlin, and the puppet regime of Vichy.

Barbara. After being banished from Berlin for trying to obtain a travel visa, Barbara finds herself isolated in a gloomy Northern town where she works at the local medical clinic. Subject to constant supervi-sion and searches by a menacing GDR officer and unable to take so much as an evening stroll without looking over her shoulder, she quickly searches for a way to leave the Eastern bloc once and for all. But her yearnings are gradually transformed as she grows closer to the clinic’s head doctor, Andre, a gentle loner who’s forced to keep tabs on Barbara and whose intentions are never quite clear, though they appear to be good-natured. Their bond is further enhanced by a love of the profession that has them working overtime to care for two troubled patients: a rebellious teenage runaway, Stella, and a young man who attempted suicide.

Reality. Luciano is a Neapolitan fishmonger who supplements his modest income by pulling off little scams together with his wife Maria. A likeable, entertaining guy, Luciano never misses an opportunity to perform for his customers and countless relatives. One day his family urge him to try out for Big Brother. In chasing this dream his percep-tion of reality begins to change.

Don’t Stop Me Now is a contest where ejecting the bad acts is as much fun as discovering genuine talent. Stand-up comics, singers and va-riety performers all try their hand at impressing the audience, who act as judge and jury. If the acts aren’t as good as they think they are, they will be literally ejected from the show and face a surprise exit via trap doors, smashing through walls and exploding stages! Every member of the studio audience has a voting keypad and the moment more than half of them have had enough, it’s all over for the performer. Those who make it through will line up for the final judgement, and the last act standing walks away with the prize money.

Just as we promised in our previous edition, in this article we will continue the research of the film studios of Russia. Moscow has proven to be the film production capital on the territory of the CIS countries, but still those studios situated in St. Petersburg also have the great history and contributed largely to the develop-ment of film industry.

LENFILM STUDIO

Established in 1918 studio retained its name given in 1934 up to the present time. In 2004 Lenfilm became an “OAO”, Russian partial equivalent of the western type of joint-stock company form of ownership (here-inafter company names are given with their corresponding forms of ownership according to the State Law of the Russian Federation). More than 1500 films (feature, documentary, TV) had been produced here.

In 2001 the audio studio DOLBY SURROUND was opened and three years later the whole studio had been repaired and technically modernized.

The main studio (4 ha.) with the three stages is situated in the centre of St. Petersburg. Sound stage №1 (477 m2) is equipped with the water tank and is used for the stage sets not higher than 5,5 m. Sound stage №2 (843 m2) also with the water tank is higher – 9 m. There is a chromakey in it. The largest sound stage №4 is of an area 1100 m2 and 8 m height (two balconies at 4,4 m and 7,5 m). Yet there is another one sound stage – №5 (1000 m2) but it is under reconstruction now. Studio also works on short films and video ads, dubs foreign films.

The other Lenfilm studio branch (7 ha.) is located in Sosnovaya Poliana, Krasnosel’skyi rayon. Here are situated: 3-storied office building, cinelab (founded and operated with the joint company Sirus-film), two stages of an area 1100 m2 (both removed from operation in 1997 up to now), auto collection (47 units of historic and antique cars), fireworks facility, back lot and the motor depot with the car and truck fleet and the special auto transport: 5 light trucks, 4 camera trucks, 2 truck units, 2 wind machines trailers. Studio services also include leasing and manufacturing of contemporary, historical and antiquarian costumes and props, supplying trailers and promo shootings, hiring out of stage-production resources, leasing of garderobes and property-rooms, dry-cleaning, ironing, starching. About 250,000 costumes made in total.

The Special effects department provides with the graphical film-setting, titles production on fiction and neutral backgrounds, optical (blow-up) printing, production of internegatives of image and leaders, image restoration, front- and rear-projection, traveling matte and cartoon services, transferring negative and positive (35 and 16-mm) film to Betacam-SP , Super-VHS, DVD, VHS (Bosch and Marcony film scanners), and also 8 and 8-Super mm to VHS. Lenfilm production capacity is several dozens of full-length feature films year, shot mostly by those production companies which rent studios’ stages and equipment.

The next two state film studios have no much to boast of a large area, but they provide with the A to Z pro-duction cycle nevertheless.

ST. PETERSBURG DOCUMENTARY FILM STUDIO

The official foundation date is 1932, but due to some archive materials its history may be traced back to 1914–1918. Hundreds of films, covering every aspect of Russian and foreign history in the 20th Century, have been created on the studio chronics. Only in the period of 1957-1997 film studio produced 950 docu-mentary films (about 500 hours) and many news films and movie magazines amounting to 900 hours.

Being under the full control of the government St. Petersburg Documentary Film Studio is located in a five-storied building with a total area of 5281 m2. The ground floor (1511,34 m2) is the place for several offices, as well as two sound stages: “Belyi zal” (450 m2) – for concert band music recording, and “Krasnyi zal” of an area 270 m2 and 10 m height – for interior shooting. Administration offices, editing rooms, sound re-cording studio, motion picture camera and lighting equipment store, rooms for film crew and other supple-ment facilities are on the other floors.

LENNAUCHFILM

Established in 1933 under the name of Kinofabrica №1 Techfilm it is considered as the oldest film studio engaged in science, educational and documentary films production. In April 2006 it was renamed into OAO “Lennauchfilm” film studio.

RUSSIAN WORLD STUDIOS

Founded in 1998 Vsemirnye Russkie Studii (Russian World Studios, RWS), is one of the largest film and television production and distribution companies in the Russian market and among the countries of CIS.

Since 2007 RWS has been a subsidiary of JSFC Sistema, one of the largest diversified holding companies in the country. The same time it became a ZAO (eq. closed joint-stock company). RWS operates two stu-dios – in Moscow and in St. Petersburg.

The total area of the studio in St. Petersburg is 11,000 m2, including 4,000 m2 of office, make-up and ward-robe facilities, cafeteria and other supplementary facilities. There are six sound-proof stages (four – 750 m2 and two – 350 m2) 8,5 m height. Sound pressure level up to 120 dB.

All sound stages equipped with the top lift hoist systems and polymeric covered floors. There is a water tank for water shots and Wi-Fi internet connection on the premises of all sound stages.

The company currently owns more than 1500 hours of diverse content; including in-house projects, co-productions, and third party productions. The RWS catalogue offers a wide range of products in various genres and formats including TV series, feature films and television movies.

LENFILM XXI

In May 2010 it was decided to set up OAO Lenfilm XXI – a joint venture between ОАО Systema Mass-media and FGUP VGTRK with the charter capital of 116 mln rubles and share of at least 25% belonging to the State.

Now the construction of the Lenfilm XXI studio complex on the premises of above mentioned RWS St. Petersburg studio with a total area of 65 000 m2 is under way. There should be one sound stage 2000 m2 with the water tank, two sound stages – 400 m2, two sound stages – 200 m2, office and administration building (12 500 m2), synchronized sound and noise effects recording studio, control, editing and recorder room, film laboratory, hotel with 80 rooms (3+ stars), cafeteria, concert hall, multi-level parking, and scenery, props and supplementary facilities (4 000 m2). Studio complex is being developed by the two American architects – Scott Carter (known for the project of stages now used by Walt Disney Studios, DreamWorks Studios, Hollywood Center Studios etc.) and David Jacobson from the Nadel Architects company.

Finally, we would like to shed some light on the situation in other regions of the Russian Federation. Unfor-tunately, film production outside Moscow and St. Petersburg is not so well.

For example, in 2010 film company Yugra-film, which produced 13 full-length films and more than 10 TV dramas, ceased to exist. From May 2011, Ukrainian distributor Inter-Film company entered new distribution markets of the CIS countries. Since that time, Inter-film is represented on 11 territories. In an exclusive interview to CIS:Content Report Dmitry Kirienko, Inter-Film director, told about the progress made outside Ukraine and the distribution market conditions on the CIS territories.

As we know Inter-Film company distributes films on 11 territories of CIS. Do you have your own offices there or work with the associated contractors?

Inter-Film with the main office in Ukraine has distribution divisions in Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, Azerbai-jan and Kazakhstan. These offices financially support film promotion on the given territories and provide local cinemas with the film copies. In this case, we apply the box office scheme and share income with cinema according to the pre set proportion. It is so-called major scheme used by the most distributors be-cause of its transparence, and our goal is to implement it in all the territories we work in. Copyright holders are interested in this too.

Some territories like Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia do not apply major scheme, but in the future they will, and we will do our best for it. Earlier cinemas were the distributors themselves, they used to buy rights, screen the films and sometimes pass on copies to other cinemas. It was not too easy to break this scheme in Moldova, Belarus, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, but we did it and we will carry on elsewhere. The main barrier for major box-office scheme implementation on the territory of CIS is the in-ability of the cinemas to provide with an accurate data about the number of tickets sold. That is why we have to agree on the minimal financial guarantee inclusion.

What about competition and market saturation? Who are the main CIS market players – local distributors or the Russian ones?

Let me put some clarity into it. The role of the local distributor can not be understated in case it had bought the rights not from initial copyright holders but from the Russian companies instead. For instance, besides Meloman company which releases films from Sony Pictures and Walt Disney there are other four local distributors in Kazakhstan. The latter distribute the films of the independent studios.

It can be said that the market is equally developed in all CIS countries, except those where the so-called “fixed distribution” scheme is used. It means that theatres pay to distributor a fixed sum of money for the rights and earn the 100% of an income in return. In this case theatres must be pretty sure to get paid money back, but they have the weather – they can screen the film wherever and in a whatever way they like. It does hurt the market. Box office scheme allows film right to all theatres at once widening the mar-ket and filling all the free niches equally. As the market develops only when someone changes the rules of the game, we are the one who does it here [on the CIS territory]. But for those focusing on the “four-wall distribution” money return is the main goal.

What kind of storage media do the theatres of CIS prefer to work with?

It depends on the film itself. The so popular now 3D projects are used on the digital media only. The are also a lot of 35 mm film movies, but as a whole – digital media is a frontrunner in the CIS countries.

Hence, the situation with modern equipment in theatres is not so disastrous as it seems to be. Can you provide the details?

There are many municipal theatres in Uzbekistan, that screen films including national ones on DVD. By the way, national films are very popular there. However, there is only one 3D cinema located in Tashkent and only four fully functional cinemas (with the exception of municipal DVD screening rooms) working with titles produced by the major film studios.

There are six modern cinemas (‘Patriya’ monopoly) in Moldova, five in Georgia, two or three in Tajikistan and only one in Armenia. We managed to dent the market in Azerbaijan, more precisely in Baku, there are three-four cinemas there and the construction of several new is under way. Belarus has 10 theatres (with two or three digital screen and equipment for 3D-films) and most of them are under control of regional and municipal branches of ‘Kinovideoprokat’ unitary enterprise.

The state or municipal authorities own many theatres, except those in Moldova, Kazakhstan and Kyr-gyzstan. It does not mean however that they are worse equipped than commercial ones. For example, “Nizami” state cinema has everything except perhaps gold decorations. That all depends from attention paid by the countries governments to the film production and distribution sectors and also from the state financing of course.

Inter-Film distributed about 20 films in Ukraine in 2011. There were much more in Kazakhstan at the same time. What about the other territories?

It depends on rights we have on one or another territory. For example in Kazakhstan we distribute Dream-Works Animation, Paramount Pictures and Central Partnership (CPSH) films. In Ukraine – only CPSH. In Belarus – Universal, film slate of which is pretty good this year. In Georgia and Azerbaijan – Paramount Pictures, CPSH and Warner Bros. CPSH rights are applicable on all territories except Belarus.

The CIS countries plus Russia total box-office sum is accessible to all, but what are the box-office figures of the CIS countries without Russia?

You get that right, it all goes into the Russian box-office. The copyright holders, who are mostly the Russian companies or the foreign companies’ offices on the territory of Russia, choose on how to provide the data for themselves. We do have the data but according to the terms of agreement with the copyright holders can not provide it to the third parties. Moreover when calculating the total box office sum we do not take into account the separate countries but the releases of separate distributors on the whole territory, taken in order to report directly to the right holders. That is why there is no accurate data at the time; we still have to calculate it.

Well, may be you can name the most successful Inter-Film movies of the 2011-2012 season?

In terms of box office the most successful were the Paramount Pictures films ‘Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol’, ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and the DreamWorks Animation ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’. It should be mentioned that the film releases on the territory of Ukraine are bound to the Central Partnership com-pany rights. ‘The Three Musketeers’ (about $1 mln), ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ ($1 mln) and the Russian ‘What Else Men Talk About’ (more than $2 mln) did a very good job in Ukraine too.

What CIS country is of the first priority for you? Which is the most profitable one?

In 2011 our releases in Ukraine amounted $5 mln (we have already reached this mark in May 2012 and are very proud of it). Still, we got $9 mln in Kazakhstan box office in 2011 (mostly due to ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’) and $3 mln in 2012. The rest of CIS countries brought in about $2 mln in 2011 in total. So, in terms of the revenue the main business is done outside Ukraine. Unlike Kazakhstan it is far more troubled as for dubbing in part or dealing with the state bodies in whole.

But according to the Kazakhstan Law films should be dubbed into the state language either, am I right?

We have broken the ice. In years to come they will be dubbed or at least subtitled in Kazakh. The first at-tempts were not successful ones – financed by the government dubbing failed to turn heads. That is why obligatory dubbing took backseat. For example, ‘Cars 2’ animation film dubbing was worth $100 000, but after all it attracted three times less viewers than the Russian version. The audience is not ready to hear Kazakh voiced-over heroes yet. The dubbing is sometimes important in Georgia and Azerbaijan but the Russian language still fits best.

Have you thought about the distribution of films in those CIS countries where they had been pro-duced? Have you received the proposals of cooperation with the local production companies?

All CIS countries except Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, even if succeed to revive the production, usually deal with TV films not movies. Almost all Kazakhstan films are shot on the state film studio Kazakhfilm, that distributes them itself on the local market. It is unprofitable to buy them for international release because they lack potential.

The similar situation is in Kyrgyzstan, where the studios work directly with the theatres (two-three at once) providing them with the equal rights. As for Ukraine, we are negotiating on the matter of local distribution of some Ukrainian films. However, until the definite agreement I have to keep their titles a secret.
