I hate the book by CS Lewis entitled The Screwtape Letters. I hate the book so much I have read it several times. It is a series of letters written by a worldly-wise old devil to his nephew, Wormwood, who is a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The book reads like my examination of conscience. At one point Screwtape writes these words to his nephew: “The Enemy [God] sees as well as you do that courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means, at the point of highest reality. A chastity or honesty or mercy which yields to danger will be chaste or honest or merciful only on conditions. Pilate was merciful till it became risky.” I like to believe that I have a martyr’s courage and would defend the Gospel and profess Christ to the point of death. But then I recognize how often I leave words of forgiveness and regard unspoken, the small works never done, the simple things not accomplished because of my cowardice. What will others think if I say this. How will I be regarded if I go there or stand with this person? On Wednesday 36 young people in our parish will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Through the sacrament they are given the gifts of the Holy Spirit which includes the gift of courage. But it must be recognized that like in Eucharist or any sacrament, what the Lord gives must be received. The gifts of God are received only if we desire the gifts and with sincerity want to open our hearts to God’s life and love. Cowardice is the vice that seems to be bring genuine shame. I hope our newly confirmed understand what I mean when I ask God to make them always ashamed of turning from the Gospel. May they receive the gift of courage that is given to them. And may they, and all of us confirmed in the Gospel faith, receive the gift of courage. And as CS Lewis tells us in The Screwtape Letters, experience the joy of making all temptation a triumph. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

Thanks be to God! Our parish is deeply grateful to Len Beranek for the work of his hands and heart that has made possible the Altar of Repose for the tabernacle and also the new glass case for holy relics. At the 8am Mass on Pentecost Day,

June 9, we will place in the reliquary the relics of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. John Vianney. The reliquary is near the baptismal font as a reminder that all of us share the one vocation to holiness. Parishioners today and tomorrow are grateful to Len for sharing so generously the gifts and talents God has given to him.

THANK YOU

Global Outreach Catholic Exchange Program is looking for a Host Family for the 2019-2020 school year. Have you ever wanted to make a difference in the life of another person, to do something truly great for someone whose life will never be the same because of you? We are looking for a family to host a Catholic student from East–Central Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia) for the 2019/20 school year. The student will attend Aquinas Catholic High School. We need one loving family from the La Crosse area to provide room, board, and transportation. By hosting a Global Outreach student, you will be offering a young person the chance of a lifetime. Your own family will also be greatly impacted and enriched by generously opening yourselves to a Global Outreach student. For more information contact Barbara Tota-Boryczka, the Executive Director of the program at (920) 540-3085 or email [email protected] or Father Larry Seidl, the Spiritual Director of the program at (920) 412-0320 or [email protected] . Please check our website www.globaloutreachprogram.com to learn more about our mission to build civilization of

love by forming young, dynamic Catholic servant

leaders for the 21st century.

St. Elizabeth’s Baccalaureate Brunch is scheduled for Sunday, May 19th following the 10:15 am Mass. All graduating high school seniors should have RSVP’s by now. If not,

contact the parish office no later than Mon., May 13th

GLOBAL OUTREACH

Vacation Bible School for kids grades K-5 is scheduled for June 10-14, 8:30 am -11:30 am. Cat Chat- Cathletics: Training to be Champions for Christ. Just as it takes hard work to train for the Olympics, it's also important to get the right training to live out our Catholic faith. Kids engage into THE LIFE OF CHRIST with teachings from God's word on the Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, through great faith lessons, music, games, crafts, snacks, and more... Register on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1442538979219261/, St. Elizabeth’s website: www.seasholmen.org, or grab the registration form which doubles as a coloring sheet from the gathering space. $25 per child, $35/family. Volunteers needed (6th grade and up and adult)! Questions? Contact Mary Luebke in the Faith

Formation/Youth Ministry Office (608) 526- 4424.

Youth for Change - The young people of our parish will be collecting “spare change” starting next weekend, May 18/19. Pick up a cup after Mass that weekend and fill it up! This is a great help in defraying expenses for their adventure camp and mission trips this summer. Thank

you for your continued support of our youth.

A final plea for our appeal…

The end is approaching for us to reach our goal for the

2018/2019 Diocesan Annual Appeal. Currently, we

are $10,574 short of the $ 84,910 target. We are so

grateful to those of you who so generously pledged,

but in order to make our goal by the deadline of June

30th we need more help now. Every dollar donated

directly to the appeal saves our parish money. If we

have to take the deficit out of our general funds, our

parish will lose out. Please prayerfully consider, any

amount – no matter how small - is appreciated.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Happy Mothers day to all the mothers out there from the Knights of Columbus! The most important person on earth is "A Mother". She cannot claim the honor of

having built Nortre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral: A dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God's creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a Human Mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: To be a Mother? Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty Next General KC meeting is June 9th at 7pm at church.

ELIZABETH MINISTRY

NEWLY BAPTIZED

Elizabeth Ministry is an outreach program

here at SEAS to affirm, support, encourage,

and assist women in response to their needs

during their childbearing years. The

Elizabeth Ministry program is based on the

scripture story of Mary and Elizabeth and the support

and love they showed to one another during the

Visitation (Luke 1:39-45). Volunteers in our Elizabeth

Ministry program support women with phone calls,

visits, and/or meals. We currently have volunteers

available who are ready to reach out in support to

women who are experiencing all types of issues

related to infertility, pregnancy, pregnancy loss, birth,

adoption, and infant crisis. Women who would like to

be contacted by an Elizabeth Ministry volunteer or by

one of our pastoral staff should contact Carol Reider at

608-526-4424 or [email protected]. Any woman

interested in serving as a volunteer or willing to

prepare a meal for a family in need can also contact

Carol.

SEAS FAITH SEEKERS BIBLE STUDY

The Faith Seekers will host a summer Bible class for adults. We will be using the book: Discovery from the CCO Faith Studies Series. The dates are : Sundays, June 2nd, June 23rd and July 21st after the 10:15 Mass until 1:30.

Lunch is included. The cost for the class is $5 per person for the book. Please RSVP online at seasholmen.org , email: [email protected] or call the parish office. We look forward to you joining us.

Today, we welcome, Barrett Michael Holden

son of Brett Holden and Kaylah Haas, to our faith community in the

celebration of Baptism. It is now our privilege to help

this child grow in faith. We have a great gift of faith to share.

THANK YOU

Thanks to all those who volunteered their time and talent for this year’s Annual Rummage Sale last week. Another successful sale.
