The BAL will showcase approximately 15 works by each artist in the front gallery during the exhibition. Herman Hugg who is renowned for his heavily surrealistic inspired paintings and sculpture died on October 2, 2013 at the age of 92. Hugg came to Beaumont in 1954 to teach art and English at South Park High School. Some of his students included John Alexander and George Wentz. The artist’s career consisted of numerous exhibitions and awards. Primarily a painter, Hugg created sculpture in stone, wood and enamel. In the late 1960s, he began working on large scale enamels created on recycled metal surfaces such as refrigerator doors and washing machines. Jerry Newman died in 2008 at the age of 74. He taught world-renowned artists such as John Alexander and Paul Manes and Dreamworks SKG animator Kelly Asbury during his career at Lamar University. Newman’s own career as a painter, primarily depicting wildlife scenes, was prolific and he exhibited his work in the Smithsonian and other museums across the U.S. Newman’s works have also hung in the Spaso House, the residence of the U.S. Ambassador in Russia, and galleries in Paris. While the BAL focuses on showing the work of local contemporary artists, it also strives to remember and honor the early influential artists in the area that aided in creating the vibrant arts scene today.

THE PAINTED LADIES OF CRYSTAL BEACH SHOW On View (Scurlock Gallery): MARCH 8-22

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 8, 7-9 PM

Beginning March 8, artwork by a local art group known as The Painted Ladies of Crystal Beach will be on view in the Scurlock Gallery. Some members of this local art group have been painting together since 2004 on the Bolivar Peninsula. The Painted Ladies of Crystal Beach meet weekly on Thursday at the Faggard Community Center, visitors welcome. After Hurricane Ike devastated the area, the Ladies decided to continue even though several members did not return to the area. Members use different mediums such as oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Living on the Bolivar Peninsula is a daily inspiration to create art from the natural surrounding beauty. Their work has been shown in the local Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation, Galveston, and the Beaumont area at various benefits and exhibits. In spite of having to rebuild their community the Ladies continue to move forward and enjoy their art. After all, when you live in paradise it’s just another day!
