Fourth Sunday of Easter
SAVED BY THE ONE WHO WAS REJECTED
Some city teenagers often scorn and reject farm kids. Yet it’s no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world’s crops and livestock. This week’s scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John’s letter we hear that we have become God’s beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who “lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God’s beloved flock? Still shepherding. It is not uncommon to sing Psalm 23 at funerals. We sing it today at Mass. Our Shepherd leads, protects, feeds. Not only with the dead and the grieving, but with each of us and all of us – loved as beloved children, sheep of the flock. Every day. Always. • To what and to whom is the Shepherd leading
me this week? • How will I share Christ’s love? • Whom can I protect and feed?

Coerced Abortion Awareness
During the month of April we remember and pray in a special way for those women who are victims of coercion in the abortion process. The following information is courtesy of the Elliot Institute: Most abortions are unwanted or coerced. Many are forced. From deceptive or coercive counseling to job and housing discrimination, pregnancy- or abortion-related violence or even homicide (the leading killer of pregnant women) abortion endangers women and children. The Un-Choice: • 64% of women reported
feeling pressured to abort. • Most felt rushed or uncertain,
yet 67% weren’t counseled. • 79% weren’t told of available
resources. • 84% weren’t sufficiently
informed before abortion. • Pressure to abort can escalate
to violence. • Homicide is the leading killer
of pregnant women. • Clinics fail to screen for
coercion. • Women are nearly 4 times
more likely to die after abortion.
• Suicide rates are 6 times higher after abortion.
• 65% of women suffer trauma symptoms after abortion.
For more information visit: http://www.theunchoice.com/pdf/FactSheets/ForcedAbortions.pdf Please pray for all women who are experiencing coercion to have an abortion and for those who are coercing them! And for an increase in the respect of all human life.
May – The Month of Mary The month of May is the “month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady,” and it is the occasion for a “moving tribute of
faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world [pay] to the Queen of Heaven. During this
month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an
especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance” (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of
May, no. 1). Please join us in honoring Mary in a special way
during the month of May as we recite the most holy Rosary before all the Masses each weekend. The
Rosary will begin a half an hour before Mass starts.

LET’S TALK
Involving the family in today’s readings Who are some modern examples of “rejected
cornerstones” - people whose cause or work is not accepted by the general masses?
Have you had a personal experience of being rejected for what you believe in or for a cause you feel strongly about?
How might the belief that you are an unconditionally loved child of God impact your prayer and the way you relate to Jesus and others?
Why is the image of the Good Shepherd one of the most loved images of Jesus? Name one other image of Jesus that you find very inspiring.
RESPONDING TO THE WORD Name one way you can act on today’s readings. Suggestions: Look out for some ‘lost soul’ who may need some good shepherding this week.
