QUICK STEPS TO WORKING OUT

The steps to working out on the C846 are listed below. As you workout, keep inmind that you have several ways to increase your work effort.

• decreasing the resistance and increasing the revolutions per minute (RPM).

• increasing the resistance and keeping the RPM constant.

• increasing both the resistance and RPM.

1. For your Heart Rate to appear on the display, the heartrate receiver must be installed in the display console andyou need to wear the POLAR® chest strap. Refer to PrecorHeart Rate Option Owner’s Manual to learn how to usethe chest strap properly.

2. If necessary, turn the unit ON. As you face the displayconsole, the I/O switch is located at the lower right side ofthe base panel.

3. Sit on the seat and face the display console. Placeyour feet firmly in to the pedals. If you need to adjust theseat height, refer to the section below, Adjusting the Seat.

4. Check the pedal straps. Pedal straps should be tight sothat your feet cannot easily slide off the pedals.

5. Begin pedaling. When the Precor banner appears, an-swer the Setup prompts by pressing Enter or press QuickStart to access Manual mode (default settings apply).Refer to Quick Start information on pages 18 and 25.

To pause during your workout session, simply stop pedal-ing. Workout statistics stop accruing after 5 seconds if nopedal movement is detected. Then, the display reverts toStandby Mode. See Standby Mode on page 21.

6. Scanning occurs automatically once you begin acourse. To display one statistic (Time, Distance, Calo-ries, etc.), press the Change key until the statistic youwant is highlighted. That statistic will remain displayed untilyou press the Change key again.

7. Once you finish exercising, be sure to cool down. When you complete a course on the C846, the 5-minuteCool Down program automatically begins. Cooling downafter your workout helps reduce muscle stiffness and sore-ness by transporting excess lactic acid out of the work-ing muscles. It also helps your heart rate return to itsnormal (non-exercising) state. Always incorporate a 3 to5 minute cool down period at the end of your workout.See Cooling down After Your Workout on page 21.

8. Remove your feet from the C846 pedals. To help main-tain your balance, hold onto the handrails (C846 upright)or seat (C846 recumbent) as you dismount.

STANDBY MODE

You can pause any time during your workout. Use this feature to rest or take ashort break. To pause while working out, simply stop moving the pedals. You cantell that you are in Pause mode because Time and the other workout statisticsstop accruing after 5 seconds.

If you don’t begin pedaling within 5 seconds, the C846 reverts to Standby mode.Dots appear on the display during Standby mode to simulate a countdown. Thedots disappear from right to left and indicate how much time remains before theC846 assumes that you have stopped working out and resets the display. Theworkout statistics are deleted and the display appears blank or, if the unit isplugged in, the display returns to the Precor banner.

To resume your workout, begin moving the pedals before the dots disappearfrom the display. Your workout statistics continue from where you left off.

COOLING DOWN AFTER A WORKOUT

Cooling down after your workout is important because it helps reduce musclestiffness and soreness by transporting excess lactic acid out of the workingmuscles. Cooling down for at least 3 minutes helps provide a smooth transitionthat allows your heart rate to return to its normal (non-exercising) state. TheC846 provides an automatic 5-minute cool down period that occurs once youcomplete a course. A prompt appears, indicating that you are in cool down.

During your cool down, the displays on the console continue to appear. TheTime display counts down so you know how much time is remaining in cooldown. When you complete the 5-minute cool down, a prompt scrolls across thedisplay indicating that you have completed the cool down period. Continuepedaling to review your workout statistics. After the statistics are scanned, thedisplay reverts to the Precor banner. You can then stop pedaling and dismountfrom the cycle.

THE C846 HEART RATE FEATURE

To activate the heart rate feature on the C846, you need to purchase the PrecorHeart Rate Option and install its receiver into the display console. To display yourheart rate, you must wear the POLAR® chest strap while working out. The cheststrap transmits your heart rate signal to the receiver which, in turn, causes it toappear on the display. During your workout, the heart rate indicator lights andblinks at the same rate as your pulse. This provides a visual clue and indicateswhat your heart rate is doing even when the display is scanning a different feature.

Note: The Smart RateTM display does not appear if you use the Quick Start keyto access a course.

The heart rate equipment is sensitive and it requires special care. If you arehaving difficulty with the C846 heart rate feature, see the Heart Rate Trouble-shooting Tips described in the Maintenance section.

When you maintain your heart rate between 70% and 85% of your maximumaerobic heart rate, you are improving your overall cardiovascular/cardiorespira-tory fitness level. Maintaining your heart rate in either zone (weight loss or cardio-vascular) for 30 minutes or more on a regular basis (minimum 3 times a week)provides the greatest benefits.

Important: If the Smart Rate segment appears, but does not blink, it meansthat a receiver is installed, but that you are not wearing the chest strap or it is notworking properly. To correct problems, refer to your Precor Heart Rate OptionOwner’s Manual or to Obtaining Service on page 2.

INTERVAL COURSE SETTINGS

Interval training provides numerous benefits. Since interval training segmentsthe workout into smaller components, a 20- or 30-minute workout seems topass more quickly. In addition, studies have shown that it is a more efficientmethod for achieving aerobic benefits—you start seeing improved cardiovascu-lar fitness much sooner with less effort. Studies also show that people whointerval train are more likely to stick with their fitness program.

The interval course on the C846 lets you set the course intervals according toyour training regimen. It alternates between 60 seconds of “Rest” and 60 sec-onds of “Work.” You set the resistance for the first rest and work interval and thesoftware takes over from there, repeating the intervals throughout the course. At any point during the workout, you can change the resistance of the currentinterval by simply pressing the ▼▲ keys. The software remembers the newsetting and applies it to the appropriate rest or work interval.

Important: If you use the Precor Heart Rate Option, you can adjust the rest orwork intervals if your heart rate is above or below the recommended zones foryour age. For the weight loss mode, try to maintain your heart rate at the lowerend (55% of maximum heart rate) while in the “rest” intervals and keep it at 70%of maximum heart rate while in the “work” intervals.

To use the interval course, take the following steps:

1. Sit on the C846 and set your feet on the pedals. Begin pedaling.

2. While the Precor banner scrolls across the display, press Enter.

3. At the course prompt, use the ▼▲ key to select INTV.

4. Press Enter to proceed to the next prompt. When you finish answering thesetup prompts, the Interval course begins.

To set the resistance levels for each interval, take the following steps:

1. The rest resistance level is preset to level “1.” Press the ▲ key if you want tochange the level. When the desired resistance setting is displayed, simplycontinue working out—you do not need to press Enter.

The C846 returns to the “rest” resistance level setting at the beginning ofeach rest interval until you change it or end your workout.

HEART RATE TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

If you have purchased the Precor Heart Rate Option and installed the receiverinto the display console, the C846 should be able to pick up a user’s heart ratesignal if he or she is wearing the POLAR® chest strap while working out.

Important: The Precor heart rate receiver must be properly installed in the dis-play console according to the instructions found in the Precor Heart Rate OptionOwner’s Manual.

A few easy steps can be taken before you need to call customer service regard-ing heart rate problems. One of the first things to do is verify the following:

The C846 is turned ON.

The POLAR® chest strap is being worn properly by the user during a workout.

The user is within 3 feet of the C846, facing the display, and pedaling above30 RPM.

The user is working out in a selected a course. (The Heart Rate feature isactivated when a course profile appears.) Note that if the user pressesQuick Start to access a course, the Smart RateTM feature will not appear.

Other aspects of the heart rate option are discussed below:

Determining if the Heart Rate Receiver is installed in the Display Console

A quick way to determine if the heart rate receiver is installed in the C846 is tobegin pedaling, press the Enter key and follow the prompts. If the heart ratereceiver is installed, the prompt "ENTER AGE" appears after selecting a work-out time. If you end up with the course profile being displayed immediately afterentering a workout time, then the C846 does not have a heart rate receiverinstalled. If you wish to purchase the option, call 888-665-4404 to locate thedealer nearest you.

Detecting a Heart Beat

It may take several seconds for the heart rate receiver to detect a number ofvalid heart beats. Once it does, the user’s heart rate is displayed when theHeart Rate indicator (LED) is lit during the scanning process. Throughout aworkout the Heart Rate LED flashes at the same rate as your pulse.

If “---” appears when the Heart Rate indicator (LED) is lit and all the previouslydiscussed steps have been taken, then you need to do the following:

• Make sure that the electrodes on the chest strap are moist and placedproperly against the skin. Sometimes, due to body chemistry, the cheststrap cannot successfully detect and transmit a heart rate. If this occurs, use the electrolyte spray that accompanies the Precor Heart Rate Optionpackage. Follow the directions on the bottle. After spraying the electrodestrips on the chest strap, check to be sure that the strap is comfortably tightaround the chest and centered in the middle of the user’s chest. Refer tothe Precor Heart Rate Option Owner's Manual.

• Another possibility which can cause erratic readings is that the chest strap’sbattery may be dead. To purchase a new chest strap, call 888-665-4404 tolocate the dealer nearest you.

SERVICING THE C846

Do not attempt to service the C846 yourself except for the maintenance tasksdescribed in this manual. The C846 does not contain any user-serviceable partsthat require lubrication. For information about product operation or service, call888-665-4404.
