5 Questions to Transform Your Relationship with Time

TIME is a PRECIOUS commodity. Most people would agree that it never feels like there is enough time. In her work with overwhelmed business owners and corporate leaders, Helen Kosinski, owner of Better Than Ever Coaching, successfully supports them as they leap to the next level, even when they have no idea where they will find the time or the energy to make their vision a reality. Helen learned how to use her time effectively during her 20+ year corporate career, where she managed multi-million dollar development projects, as she concurrently completed her MBA at Boston University part-time. Helen opened her coaching business in 2005, after leaving her Information Technology career in the financial services industry. She enjoys working with her clients in a variety of ways: 1-to-1 coaching (over the phone and in-person), group coaching in programs such as

the 6-week tele-program, Get Clients Now! ™ and Women’s Walking retreats in the Spring and Fall. She offers a 30-minute complimentary coaching meeting over the phone to anyone who would like to discover the power of working with a coach. To setup your coaching meeting, you can reach Helen via her website: www.BetterThanEverCoaching.com, via email: [email protected] or by phone (508) 896-5779. A Message from your Co-President Irene Paine

Dear BPW members,

I am checking in the rearview mirror at the hot summer we left behind, the blood moon we got to experience so dramatically in late September, and the wonderful dinner meeting we had at the Lobster Claw Restaurant in Orleans. I have to thank our September guest speaker, Carol Penfield, R.N., M.S., of Chatham Health and Swim Club. During her presentation, she turned our faces gently towards the mirror of health. Her presentation reminded us that our modern foods and sedentary lifestyle (compared to our grandparents) are not all that well tolerated by our bodies. Can you believe 1 out of 3 babies born this afternoon

in the US will develop diabetes during their lifetime? Tragic, and for most, preventable by embracing ”lifestyle medicine.” I’m not liking much of what I see in the mirror, a 20-pound weight gain over the past four years, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I decided to take her up on the challenge of getting myself back on the right track so I can be as vigorous in my eighties as my two grandmothers were. I am a new member in her 18-class Complete Health Improvement Program. Don’t we all want to live as well as we can?

I can now look forward to losing this weight over the next four years (maybe less, we’ll see!) instead of gaining 20 more. That’s a 40 pound difference in four years! These are goals I set for myself, everyone is different. This will also bring down my blood pressure and my cholesterol levels. So, I’m doing it! Exercising and changing my shopping list to more plant based foods, NO processed foods. And it’s all costing me far less than one trip to the hospital emergency room with chest pains. Yes, I’ve been there. I encourage you all to internalize the fact that 33% of women in this country will die heart disease, this number so high mainly because of our lifestyles, not so much through genetics. So, I’m up on my pony, and encourage you to look into a healthy program that fits your geographic area.

Time? It’s easier to manage the time it takes to get to the gym and back than it is to manage everything from a hospital bed. Just sayin’. Take some time outdoors for a brisk walk around one of our dozens of beautiful ponds, this one is the reservoir at Bell’s Neck in Harwich. You’ll get your body moving, and dish yourself out some stress reducing endorphins while you’re at it. It’s fun! Thank you, Carol Penfield, for getting me outside and exercising. So, I can’t wait to see what our October guest speaker, Helen Kosinski, will set me on fire about. Oh, that’s right, she will transform my relationship with time! I will manage it, rather than time managing me! See you at Fanizzi’s!

Your co-president, Irene Paine

COLLECT Keep us, oh God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face - without self- pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous. Let us take time for all things; make us grow calm, serene and gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are at one. And may we strive to touch and to know the great common human heart of us all, and O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind. Mary Stuart

Presented by: Carol Penfield R.N., M.S., Nurse Practitioner and owner of Chatham Health & Swim Club. Carol presented her meeting using a PowerPoint presentation to stay on point. Below are excerpts from each slide. How you live your life day to day directly affects your health. This includes primary care, early detection and lifestyle medicine which treats the cause of the cause because it addresses all aspects of day to day life such as Nutrition, exercise, effective management of stress, restorative sleep, smoking and substance cessation, social support, love, relationships, Depression, return to happiness, meaning/purpose. The Problem: Healthcare does NOT make Health. There is no single pill or procedure that will “fix” chronic illness. What about our genes? Genes are the loaded gun… lifestyle pulls the trigger. Why is the information not getting to you? Medical research spends 3.4% of funding on nutrition annually. USDA, FDA, RDA, lobbyists, etc. control what the population hears. The ‘EPIC’ study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine studied 23,000 people’s adherence to 4 simple behaviors – not smoking, exercising 3.5 hr/wk, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. In those adhering to these behaviors, 93% of diabetes, 81% of heart attacks, 50% of strokes and 36% of all cancers were prevented. Nurses Health Study: 80% of all heart disease and 91% of diabetes could be eliminated if women adopted lifestyle practices including exercise, normal body weight, smoking cessation and simple nutritional changes. Diabetes Prevention Project: Shows that individuals with baseline glucose intolerance can reduce their risk of developing diabetes by 58% just by increasing their physical activity and losing 5-7% of their body weight. Cleveland Clinic: Analysts concur that health care expenditures could be reduced by $930 billion over 5 years if L.M. were applied to all patients. Digestive Health: Protecting your normal and vital microbiota. Stress, sugar and alcohol increase permeability of the gut. Permeability of the intestinal barrier affects the regulation of the inflammatory response – So, get back to basics! Our immune system was not designed to keep up with our newer environment & foods. Cancer prevention: Lengthen your telomeres! Turn off the bad genes and turn on the good. Protein recommendations = less than 10%. Increased plant-based fats and foods. Meditation changes gene expression. Fiber. Dr. Ornish’s prostate cancer research showed 70% decrease in tumor growth cells and gene expression in just 3 months. Fear is not a sustainable motivator because it is negative. Find what your passions and interests in life are. That is positive. Strategies to healthy behavioral changes are Make a plan and realistic goal. Get support. Stay accountable. Monitor the right things. Positive re-framing and screen for triggers.
