Cairo University History at a Glance- CU was established in 1908, and began operating with only a few colleges. - In the beginning, social thinkers called for the establishment of an Egyptian University that would become a beacon for liberal thought and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive academic revival in all fields of knowledge. - In 1940, a royal decree was issued to rename the National University to King

Fouad’s University. - In 1946, the Faculty of Dar El-Ulum was affiliated with the university and the inaugural cornerstone for student housing was laid.- In 1950, the Students’ Hospital was founded to provide university students with comprehensive healthcare, recognizing that mind and body must be developed as a whole.- In 1953, only a year after the 23rd of July Revolution, the cabinet issued a decree to rename the university from King Fouad’s university to Cairo 3

Study Methods for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science DegreesThe duration of study in most faculties is usually four years, which may be extended in the faculties of engineering, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary to five years. The Bachelor’s degree in medicine requires six years. The internal regulatory bodies of each faculty determine the syllabus, the curriculum and the time allocation for each syllabus. After a process of goal-setting discussions within each department, the University Council establishes the content of each

syllabus. The Cairo University school year is divided into two semesters. Some faculties, such as the Faculty of Medicine, have an extended academic year. The University Council has also established the Arabic language as the main language of study, except in Language & Linguistics, the Arts, Commerce, Economics, Law, Agriculture, Medicine, and Dentistry.

Postgraduate studies are divided into1. Diplomas:The curricula of these diplomas are of practical and academic. The duration of study is restricted to a minimum of one year.

2. Master’s degree: The course of study for a master’s degree trains the candidate in methods of research and analysis. Upon acceptance of a written thesis by the candidate’s supervisor, a committee of examiners is formed to hold a viva review and defense of the thesis. A minimum period of two years is a required to obtain this degree.

3. Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D)The degree is granted on the basis of completing an original research project involving after a minimum duration of two years. Upon receipt of the letter of approval of a thesis from the supervisor, a viva committee is formed to interview the candidate. The viva committee may recommend further courses of study for the candidate, if required by the internal regulations of the faculty in question.

4. Doctor of Science (DSc)The doctorate of science (DSc.) is conferred by the Faculty of Science. To obtain the degree, candidates must fulfill the following requirements. He or she should:1 .Should be a holder of PhD

in science, with at least five years’ work in scientific research subsequent to the PhD.2. Should present original research papers published in a peer review journal that was not part of the candidate’s MA and the PhD dissertations in science.3. Should present the framework and the outline of the research, in addition to the benefits of his/her previous studies, any joint research, and the names of the MA and PhD supervisors.4. The faculty council undertakes to investigate the validity of the submitted scientific researches to be evaluated by a committee that includes current and former professors at Egyptian universities or institutions, or their counterparts in other accredited foreign universities and institutions.

5. Honorary PhD Degree:The university awards this degree by virtue of the University Council decision or according to a recommendation from any council of a university or an institution for those who have achieved distinguished services to the state, University, or humanity in general.

The first central library was officially opened in 1932 inside Cairo university campus. Since then it has continuously served university students both in undergraduate and postgraduate divisions for more than 75 years.In 2008 and while celebrating the university centennial, the new central library was partly opened on an area of 4000 m2.The main building contains 8 floors with a unique architectural design.The new library was equipped with up to date technologies for index operations, Electronic print and publishing.The new library also includes a great reading hall, electronic researches hall, special hall for visually impaired students. The university treasures museum and a heritage panoramic display hall.
