The 5k walk is a fundraising event to unite survivors and caregivers in the SWLA community and around the world. The American Cancer Society is helping people stay well, get well, finding cures and fighting back against breast cancer.

Lake Charles, LA — SWLA residents will gather at the

Civic Center on October 15th to participate in the Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer 3K. This event is also a “pet friendly” walk/run.

This Lake Charles event was founded in 2004 by Ethel Precht to benefit local residents who were undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

In 2008, Ethel Precht started the HOPE Breast Cancer Foundation devoted to helping breast cancer survivors. The Foundation awards a scholarship at McNeese State University to a student who is a breast cancer survivor or has a member of their immediate family who is a survivor of breast cancer. Lake Charles, LA — The 10th annual Step Up for

Down Syndrome Walk is set for Saturday, October 6th at the McNeese Quad. The walk is scheduled for 9:30 AM with face painting, Moon jumps, great food, dancing and kids games to follow from 10 AM to Noon.

The 2012 Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk is the primary fundraiser for UP4 DOWNS, which is committed to raise community awareness and understanding of the special abilities of children and adults with Down Syndrome.

This event includes partici-pation in the walk, lunch and drinks with hours of enter-tainment and prizes. Event T-Shirts will be available the day of the walk on a first come, first serve basis. Pets provide unconditional love and reverent loyalty that is rarely imitated. Regrettably not every pet is lucky enough to find a forever home and offer such allegiance. Many pets are abandoned, abused or otherwise surrendered by families that can no longer care for them. Rescue organizations strive to find new, loving homes for these pets so they can once again become a member of a caring family.

LAPAW RESCUE, an Ambassador for the Purina® Pro Plan® Rally to Rescue® program, is hosting the 2nd Woofstock SWLA, a day of outdoor fun for dogs and dog lovers! Bring your dog or adopt one at this Adoption Event and Fun Family Day. October 13, 2012 will be a Woofing Good Day to raise awareness and funds for pet rescue and help local homeless dogs and cats find permanent homes. The day will start with a Groovy Mutt Strutt at 10:00 am. This year we encourage rescue groups and local businesses to build floats out of kids’ wagons, and prizes will be awarded in different categories. Rescue, Vendor,

and Arts ‘n’ Crafts Stations will open at 10:30; the first event on the main stage will be The Blessing of the Animals.

Gary Shannon from 92.9 THE LAKE RADIO will MC this Pawriffic event for the whole family - including the family dog! Come out and join us from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for Music, Food, Contests and lots of Sloppy Kisses.

LAPAW RESCUE will be joined by 25 other rescue and animal welfare groups from Houston to New Orleans. Groups include Angels 4 Paws, American Bull Mastiff Rescue, Blue Bonnet Equine Humane Society, Caiman Terrier Rescue, Dr. Dog Therapy Dog,

Four Paws, Heckhaven Wildlife Refuge, Hobo Hotel, Lake Charles Pit Bull, Lake Charles Chapter Humane Society, Louisiana Boxer Rescue, Lucky Star King Cavalier Rescue, Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue, Mastiff Rescue, New Leash on Life, Southwest Chapter Humane Society.

This event will help achieve the Rally to Rescue® goal of providing loving homes to 600,000 animals across the country, since the program’s inception, by the end of 2012. Since 2005, Rally to Rescue® and its Ambassadors have successfully found homes for more than 500,000 homeless animals. Last year Pro Plan

Rally to Rescue organizations found homes for more than 100,000 dogs and cats across the country.

Claire Whitlock-Skinner, LAPAW Rescue’s Fund-raising Event Director said, “Events like this provide us the opportunity to give deserving animals a new leash on life. We are dedicated to making a difference and saving thousands of pets.”

LAPAW RESCUE is responsible for adopting out over 100 animals each year in Lake Charles and surrounding areas. Smaller pet rescue organizations like LAPAW RESCUE help place nearly half a million dogs and cats in homes each year across the United States, and represent nearly 45 percent of all pet adoption agencies. However they are often overlooked by potential donors due to more limited fund-raising and marketing capabilities.

LAPAW RESCUE was started in 2004 by several local animal lovers with a mission to help as many dog or cats as they possibly could. Since then over 1000 animals have been saved and adopted to loving homes.
