Please turn off your cell phones.

They are making canvas walls for the Royal Encampment at Pennsic and Estrella. The Pennsic walls will stay on the East Coast, the Estrella Walls will come back to Caid. THLady Illora has the canvas, and will paint, but she needs someone to help her with the grommets.

She would like an announcement for volunteers at May War placed in the ST. They particularly need assistance at Gate, and with haybales. She has heard that the Mermadons, Drafn, and the Hospitallers assisted with the haybales. She would like to encourage more people to volunteer, and wanted to thank those groups who did help.

Queen's Champion Archery is coming up on July 22 in Lyondemere. We hope to field many Calafian archers.

They have picked up more children’s equipment – bows and arrows – that can be used here, and at Collegium.

Lord Brian from Al Said ran a thrown weapons contest. 58 people attended. There will be another competition at the next May War. They will be at Highlands for the fall.

ARTS & SCIENCES (MASTER THORVALD)

(As emailed) - May war was a huge success, we had over 50 classes offered and from everything I heard from both teachers and students everyone had a great time. This time we offered classes on Friday and it was met with limited success. He believes that in the future, the Friday classes will be more well attended, as people get used to the new schedule.

Special BIG thanks to Lady Abigail who handled on the one site organization. I could NOT have done it with out her!!!

He will be sending out emails to everyone for classes this September. In addition, they will be hosting a Siege Sewing contest – there will be as many as five teams. Each team will pay to enter, and will receive a box of sewing items from which each team will have to make as many outfits as possible. Each team will receive similar, but not identical, material. In the event that there are not five teams, the remaining teams will divvy up the extra supplies. Each team will provide their own sewing machines, patterns, and personal equipment. The winning garb will be auctioned off, and the remaining garb will be donated to Loaner Garb. They have already started canvassing for donations. If you are interested in taking part, please contact either Master Thorvald or Lady Abigail, who is running the competition.

There will be prizes for the Siege Sewing contest.

Master Eadric announced that the Abbey hosted a historian from Perth at May War, who was particularly impressed with the Arts and Sciences programs, and came away with a very good impression of the SCA.

BARONIAL ASSETS (BARON CEI MYGHCHAELL WELLINGTON)

He brought the new Kingdom dishware.

In addition, they gave dishware to the Baron and Baroness of Dun Carragh in Atlantia.

70 issues mailed out, 10 complimentary. Surprisingly enough, the postage rate actually went down for the ST. I don't claim to understand, I am merely reporting from my pocketbook.

In other news, Master Thorvald's incredible Viking series, as published in the ST, recently won the new Caidian Quills award for Best Article. The Caidian Quills are a new Chronicler awards for the Kingdom of Caid. As the winner for Best Article, his series will automatically be entered for the Blackfox Award.

Additionally, the Dear Ebenezer series won second place for best regular feature, and the Outtakes series was tied for first in the same category. There will be a run-off to determine the Best Regular Feature, the winner for which will, again, be automatically entered in the Blackfox awards.

CONSTABLE (LORD DAVID)

It was very quiet at War. There were a few incidents that were taken care of quickly. We have lost and found items, so if you, or someone you know, is missing items, please email the Constable.

DEMOS (CHRISTEL-LEAKE)

(As reported by Mistress Eilidh) – There was a demo in Summergate at Reynold’s Elementary School. There were seven people in attendance, and far too many kids who really enjoyed beating on Sir Gamyl and THLord Kean.

(As reported by Master Thorvald) – There was a demo at a Medieval Faire at a school in the East County attended by himself, Duke Guillaume, and Baron Rowen.

He would like to announce the Natural History Museum is opening an exhibit on Pompey in the Spring, and they have asked the SCA to host a demo. He will have more information closer to the time of the exhibit. THLady Muirrenn suggested having a Roman garb workshop, and Baroness Brianna suggested contacting Mistress Aurelia about hosting a Costumer’s Guild class.

EXCHEQUER (MASTER EADRIC SHADOWGUARD OF MANSFIELD)

Gave a report of the Barony’s finances.

HERALD (THLADY ERIDANNA AMBRA DRAGOTTA)

(As emailed) – Tanwayour Anniversary - Master Thomas and Lord Edborough did fine courts and Lord Edborough ran the field heraldry. Consulting was available but there was not much interest on this day.

At Potrero War Lord Edborough ran the Herald's cries and did an outstanding job with the difficult task. Master Thomas did an outstanding closing court!

The extended consulting hours were a great success and many people submitted names and or devices.

Kingdom heraldry meeting this Sun 24th in Torrance.

Hope to do traveling consulting with Households, War bands, Cantons, Colleges and individuals.

Looking into starting consulting heraldry prior to Baronial Household on the first Wednesday of the month

Field Heraldry – (As emailed) – I attended Potrero War and Tanwayour Anniversary. He is going to be working with the other Heralds to set up a database with all the registered Calafian devices. They are trying to reinvigorate interest in Heraldry in the Barony, so people would be more interested in registering names and devices.

War - There were a total of 67 fighter dots in the pre-registration packets. Dots were assigned prior to reaching war at pre-reg. autocrat's home. THL Jana Aoibeall and Deputy Ysabeau de’ Aquitaine assisted at Gate and Field. The fighter dots this war were Sponge Bob and friends to follow the Nautical theme. I was reimbursed $16.87 on stickers and photocopying to still be completed for this war.

Tanwayour - was assisted by Methius at sign in and Lady Naomi with tournaments

MARSHAL (LORD METHIUS)

The Marshal boxes were removed from site at War. He needs this equipment back. Mistress Toline said that they might be on the trailer. Baron David said they may be in the Connex box. He needs a report from the Chirurgeonate before he can send his report to Kingdom.

He is looking for a replacement for Baronial Marshal. If you are interested in taking up the position after Anniversary, please contact him.

RAPIER MARSHAL (THLORD AVENEL)

(As emailed) – I attended May War and Tanwayour Anniversary. There were approximately 40 Rapier fighters at May War, and six at Tanwayour.

I have not collected any waivers at practices. Waivers at tournaments are collected by Lysts.

(As emailed) – Finished the Potrero War site for May. Site is being set-up for Sept War now.

All the websites are up and running, as are the emails. If you want anything on the website, please let him know.

He will be opening pre-registration and Land Allocation for September war later.

There will be no more $10 registration for RVs. The spaces are only available for RVs, not regular vehicles.

BARONIAL GROUP REPORTS

BARONIAL HOUSEHOLD (LADY RUNA)

(As emailed) – Baronial Household was held on June 6th with THL Eridana Ambra Dragotta presenting heraldry. The class was great and lots of questions answered. We have several new members that really appreciated the help. We had 22 people attending the meeting.

The next class will be on July 11th, since the 4th is a holiday. The room is reserved and Master Thomas Brownwell will be teaching Period dancing! Garb is encouraged, but certainly not required.

We had several fine folks graduate at Tanwayour Anniversary. Congratulations to Arinbjorn Thorkelsson, Celind de Cordoba, Terese Doty of Calafia, Ellyn of Tanwayour, and Ann of Calafia.

BARONIAL SUBGROUP REPORTS

POL NA GAINMHE (LADY LASAIRIONA INGUN GEIBHEANNACH)

(As emailed) – Canton went en masse to May Potrero War. Among other things, we worked Hospitality.

Monthly Canton meeting was held. Nine members were in attendance, all members. Logistics for moving Canton equipment to Potrero War was discussed, as was the budget for the current year. Opened bids for 2008 In-sand-ity, and an autocrat was chosen.

We are looking for A&S classes and teachers for the summer.

ST. ARTEMAS (SEAN COLE)

(As emailed) – The past month has been busy. We had a booth at our school's Sungod festival on May 18th, and we had some genuine interest in the group. Our booth included a small heavies demo and some of us brought arts and crafts to show off. We had 10 or 12 members in and out throughout the day. May War was a big success, and we had a great deal of people come and volunteer.

Jun 19th we had a meeting, in which 7 people came by, including two new people. We took care of a lot of business, most notably a more aggressive recruitment campaign to increase our on-campus visibility. We also began planning for arts and science demonstrations to include with our meetings in the coming months, particularly once school gets started.

The lawn has been reserved for Leodamus date of August 11. Reservation for the Oct 13th date of Leif Erickson is pending.

ST. ISADORE (LADY GIULIANA)

(As emailed) – Nothing to report.

SUMMERGATE (LADY DANYEL)

(As emailed) – Fighter practice for May 22nd was canceled due to Potrero War. Fighter Practice was held on June 12th. Five people attended.

Summergate put on a demo at Reynolds Elemetary School on June 12th from 5:00 to 8:00. It was open to all the school kids for the end of the year celebration. Seven Summergate members participated in the demo.

Archery has been held on Wednesday evenings. Three to four people have been attending. An archery novelty shoot/BBQ was held on June 6th. Approximately thirty-two people attended.

Newcomers Meeting was held on May 17th. Two new people attended. There were five people total.

Scribal arts was canceled due to Potrero war.

Council meeting was held on June 14th. Sixteen people attended.

Greatsword/Longsword Tourney will be on November 17th 2007. Daniel von Ravensfeuld is the autocrat for this event.

Lady Danyel will be stepping down as Summergate seneschal at the July council meeting. This was announced at the June council meeting. Nominations for seneschal will be taken until July 11th. Master Quinn Phelan has been nominated.

Lady Danyel has been nominated for Arts and Science officer.

Newcomers meeting will be held in a new location starting in July. The new address is: 1250 Borden Rd, San Marcos, CA 92069. Newcomers meetings are still from 7:00 to 9:00.

TANWAYOUR (LADY EBLENN VEIAIRE)

She appreciated everyone attending and helping with Tanwayour Anniversary. There were more than double the amount of people who normally attend the event. She apologizes to all of those who did not get site tokens. The feast was excellent – many thanks to Dragon. Everything went well.

The next meeting is July 1st.

She asked about the dates for events next year. THLady Illora said she will email Lady Eblenn when she gets confirmation from Kingdom.

EVENT REPORTS

MAY WAR (LORD FARLIN) – 05/24 – 05/28/2007 – FINAL REPORT

Not present. Lady Fionnghuala announced that she camped, and the Man from the Federation wore a tunic. THLady Illora said the extra day worked out, and while there were a few little glitches, they have been ironed out for next War.

Planning for May War continues all year round, and if anyone is interested in autocratting the event, please let the Seneschal know.

CORONATION/QUEEN’S CHAMPION (BARONESS BRIANNA) – 06/02 – 06/03/2007 – FINAL REPORT

There still needs to be policy written and financial information provided. It succeeded in proving to the Kingdom that if you can find a site, a staff can be found through the Baronies and Shires. It also provided those individuals who do not normally get a chance to volunteer for large events to do so. Baroness Brianna thanked those individuals in the Barony who regularly travel outside Calafia and network with other groups.

THLady Illora said she was speaking with a contact in the northern part of the Kingdom, who said they can get sites for cheap, but they do not have volunteer staff.

Mistress Eilidh said that the populace at large did not suffer from the glitches, save for the late start at Gate on Sunday.

TANWAYOUR ANNIVERSARY (EBLENN VEIAIRE) – 06/16/2007 – FINAL REPORT

She thanked everyone who took part and who attended the event and memorial.

LEODAMUS OF THEBES (LORD EDBOROUGH KELLIE, LADY TALITHA BAIRD AND LADY SIOBHAN O'CUOLAHAN) – 8/11/2007

(As emailed) – There are no funding requests at this time.

Event has been placed in the July CP, June ST and on the Baronial website.

Combat croquet is being organized by Lady Kendryth. Autocrats will be meeting shortly to hammer out specifics. The Ransomer's Guild will be providing site tokens as well as any prizes that may be offered.

A Blanket tournament has been proposed to keep cost associated with prizes down.

We are planning on Heavies, Unarmored, Rapier, Boffers, and Archery. The theme will be Greek, and we are working on having a Combat croquet tournament as well.

It has also been suggested that we not provide lunch, again to hold down costs.

FESTIVAL OF THE ROSE (LADY CELINDA) – 08/18/2007

THLady Illora would like to have the event at UCSD. Mistress Eilidh said that there is a site available for $250 with good parking – she will contact to confirm.

Lady Celinda will be autocratting the event. Baroness Brianna volunteered to be the contact for the Artisan showcase.

THLady Muirren reminded everyone that an announcement needs to be sent out to the CP by the 25th, as this will be our only opportunity to get it published in the Kingdom newsletter.

SEPTEMBER WAR (THLADY MUIRRENN AND THLORD KEAN) – AUGUST 31 – SEPTEMBER 03, 2007

THLady Illora announced the award of the bid. THLady Muirren said that she is looking for volunteers.

LEIF ERICKSON (LADY KENDRYTH FILIA GERALD AND THE CALAFIA RANSOMERS GUILD) – 10/13/2007

Firstly, there will be no requests for funds from the Barony for this event - the Guild will be funding Leif Erickson.

We have most of our needed staff in place, but will be seeking out volunteers to assist in the successful administration of this event. This event will be a combination of the traditional show for recruitment purposes for the College of St. Artemas and a fundraiser for Collegium Caidis. As such, we are planning more activities, such as a Inter-Marshal Team Challenge, a Ransom Tourney, and a silent auction which will all fit under the general theme of "Celebrating the Raid of Lindisfarne." Announcements are going out this week to the CP and the ST, which will be amended once we have a final decision made on what the team challenges will be for the fighters/archers.

We will need a lot of help with set-up, as with all the fighting going on, we will need the erics ready to go very early in the day. I have already written to the Order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Caid for their help, but am always looking for some strong arms and backs to help with the set-up. In addition, we will gratefully accept any donations for the silent auction we are planning, and if anyone can think of any opportunities for enhancing the event that the Guild may have overlooked, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Volunteers will not be turned away.

COMPANY OF ST. CATHERINE / FIBER ARTS (BARONESS THEA)

(As emailed) – Meeting at May Potrero War....we had 5 people in attendance and worked on shibori tie dyeing as well as learning the Bayeaux tapestry stitch.

The June meeting is cancelled as I will be out of town. Our next meeting will be at my home in Mira Mesa on Sun. July 29.

CORDWAINERS GUILD (MASTER THORVALD)

They are going to be moving their dates to the second Wednesday of the month. They will decide on a site – if Allied Gardens is not available, then it will be at the home of Master Thorvald. He will have an announcement in the ST about the new site.

COSTUMERS (LADY BRIDGIT)

(As emailed) – June 11, Mistress Brianna taught a class on body mapping. 16 people attended.

July 9, THL Guenevere Marian Coe will be teaching blackwork embroidery.

I will be without email June 16 - July 8. Please call me at home with any Costumers Guild business.

INDOOR COOKING GUILD (TARKTENHIEM)

(As emailed) – Four members helped Lord Dragon with Tanwayour Anniversary Feast.

Last meeting held in May before Potrero War. Two people attended so the meeting was called after 1/2 hour due to lack of attendance.

IRON BRIGADE (SIR PADRAIC)

(As emailed) - There was no Brigade practice this month due to conflict with Queen's Champion on the same day. Brigade will be held in July on the first Sunday of the month as per usual.

RANSOMERS’ GUILD (LADY KENDRYTH)

Coronation was attended by Lady Fionnghuala inghean Uilliam and Lady Abigail Chandler of Caithness. I did not attend as I meant to, as I was ill and convalescing in An Tir. In my absene, thec ladies organized and ran (with the able assistance of Lady Celinda de Cordova) the Dessert Bar and Snack Table, which raised over $150 for the Guild. This money will, in turn, be used for the upcoming Leif Erickson event.

The Guild's charter is not absolutely clear on the separation of our fundraising and largesse programs. These are two distinct, and utterly separate, aspects of our Guild. None of our fundraising goes towards largesse, none of our largesse goes towards fundraising. I will be working with Master Eadric to come up with an amended Charter that speaks more clearly to that point.

The Guild is still working on largesse for TRMs, and overseeing the successful Leif Erickson venture, and assisting the Leodamus of Thebes event. Stay tuned...

RAPIER (LORD OLIVER DOGBERRY)

(As emailed) – We had 37+ fencers at May war, and everyone had fun at the new location. We're planning on continuing to use the new location for all future Potrero wars.

I was not at Tanwayour Anniversary, but by all accounts it was a success. Lord Willen won the day.

We will be trying to have Unarmored Combat at more events around the kingdom.

THL Kol will be running Unarmored Combat fields at Leodamus of Thebes, September Potrero War, Leif

Their Majesties, Drogo and Ithuna, were gracious enough to grant us an opportunity to have a tournament to name a Queen's Champion. In the Round Robin list, Kol was victorious with Duke Giullaume finishing second. In the best of 3 final round that was requested, Duke Guillaume was victorious. By the good graces of Duke Guillaume, and with Her Majesty's consent, Kol was named Queen's Champion for Unarmored Combat.

SUGGESTION TO HAVE BARONIES SPONSOR LYST FIELDS AT KINGDOM EVENTS

Baron David said an idea was posted on the Baron and Baroness’ list to have Baronies and major Households to consider “sponsoring” their own field for Kingdom Events, on a volunteer basis, providing a banner, herald, marshals and list runners, shade and hospitality. This would make the day a lot easier on the fighters and consorts, and introduce some of the lesser-known aspirants to the Crown and their populace.

Master Thorvald said that often the Earl Marshals will want their own marshals. Baroness Brianna said that the Barony could “adopt” whichever marshal the Earl Marshal appoints. She also suggested having the Barony just adopt a field, and take care of whatever crew is associated with that field. Mistress Toline suggested encouraging a pool of people (e.g. saying that we will try to make sure we have Senior Marshals, heralds, lists people available) should the event autocrats and sub-autocrats want to take advantage of this resource.

Lord Edborough said he thinks it is a great idea.

THLady Illora said that the topic will be tabled until we can get more marshals involved.

PEN PALS FOR THE BRAVE

Lady Marie said that she is looking for volunteers to assist in the “Pen Pals for the Brave” organization, which provides pen pal letters and care packages to our soldiers. They will be accepting donations at Brigade Practice. THLady Illora and Baroness Brianna recommended getting their credentials and an announcement of the items they want donated.

DONATION TO THE CP FOR CP PRIZE

The Council passed a motion to donate $500 to the CP in lieu of running a booth at CP Prize. Baron David encouraged everyone to attend the event anyway.
