    Course Description:Intended primarily for students of the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics.An introduction to major ideas of single variable calculus including limits, derivatives,and integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions; applications. (MATF)PREREQUISITE: A grade of C or better in MATH 165, appropriate score onmathematics assessment test, or consent of department. Assessment levels: ENGL101/101A, READ 120. For computation of tuition, this course is equivalent to fivesemester hours. Five hours each week. Formerly MA 181.

    James Stewart, Calculus, Concepts and Contexts, 4th Edition, Brooks/ColeCengagePublishing Company, 2010.

    The exams (tests/final exam) are will be based on the class lecture notes,WebAssign/online homework, and worksheets (some exercises from the textbook) thatwill be posted on your course page: Blackboard.

    Your mid-grade will be calculated based on your scores of Test 1, Test 2, HW#1, HW#2,

    and that of all the quizzes which will be given on January 30, February 6, 13, 27 andMarch 6.

    One of the lowest scores of your quizzes will be dropped when I calculate your final

    grade for the course.

    If your final exam percentage score is at least 70%, then the following will apply: Thelowest percentage score of the first three tests (Test 1, Test 2, and Test 3) will be replacedwith the percentage score of your final exam if that improves your course grade. The finalexams percentage score will be used to replace only one lowest percentage score.

    If the college is closed on an exam date, the exam will administered during the nextschedule class period if it is appropriate. Otherwise, information containing therescheduling of your exam will be sent through your Montgomery College email address

    or through your course page: blackboard. So, please check your Montgomery email orblackboard regularly.

    Make up Policy: No make-up exams (tests/quizzes/final exam) will be given exceptunder extraordinary circumstances (a documented serious illness, death in the family or adocumented car accident, for example); when such circumstance arises, it is yourresponsibility to contact me by e-mail on or before the date of the exam in order to

    discuss the issue.

    Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend the class regularly and fully (to come tothe class on time and leave the class on time). Attendance may be taken at the end ofevery class. If you have to miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what you havemissed. Please ask one of your fellow classmates for what you missed. To study themissed material, read the book and/or the lecture notes. Do not expect that during myoffice hour I summarize for you what you missed in class.

    MATH 181 Course Outcomes

    Upon completion of this course the student will be able to

    Derivatives

    4. Understand and distinguish between average and instantaneous rates of changeand be able to interpret each within the context of an applied problem.

    5. Find a derivative directly from the definition of a derivative.

    6. Interpret derivatives verbally in the context of an application.

    7. Use first and second derivatives to obtain information about the graph of a functionand use the graph of a function to obtain information about its first and secondderivatives.

    8. Identify and apply the appropriate rule(s) for symbolic differentiation.

    9. Implicitly differentiate a function.

    10.Use derivatives to determine the extreme values of a function.
