GOLDEN SENIORS NEXT MEETINGThursday, November 20, 10:00 a.m. in the Family Room

GUEST SPEAKER

MARIA ZAMMITT – WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL

Since 1989 Maria Zammitt, one of our very own Parishioners, has held numerous leadership roles in the Greater Hampton Roads Council of the World Affairs Council of America (WACA), including Past President and current Board Member.

After World War I, a small group of individuals, with the cooperation of President Woodrow Wilson, wanted to nurture grassroots citizen involvement in international affairs. They founded WACA, which has since grown into a network of almost 100 nonprofit, nonpartisan Councils in over 40 states ~ two of which are in Virginia.

THE “LUNCH BUNCH”For the “after the show-show” on our meeting day, the Golden Seniors’ Crystal Ball indicates round, flat objects about 16-18 inches in diameter and sliced into “pieces of eight” for lunch. What can that possibly be????

SENIOR TOURWednesday, November 12, 12:25 p.m.

The Amber Bus Tour will include a look into the past and present culture of the Eastern Shore islanders and watermen, life on a working farm for the poor and elderly, a wine tasting experience at the Chatham Vineyard and a casual dinner at the Virginia Originals & Chesapeake Grill ~ all for $70.00 or less (depending on the number of participants). Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? If you call John Hogan (757-481-3581), he promises to make you a believer.

Remember ~ Chances are you are a senior, if you understand the wisdom of the fortune cookie message which states, “Success is when you get what you want. Happiness is when you want what you get.”

Holy Family Day School: Studies show that the Preschool formative years are crucial to a student’s education. We keep our teacher/student ratios low so that we may concentrate on allowing each child to flourish and develop as an individual. We have a thematic-based learning program, the students attend Chapel on a daily basis, and Music class is included in the price of tuition. This fall, we have places available in our Young 3-Year-Old class, with your choice of Monday, Wednesday, Friday or a Tuesday, Thursday class for your student. There are also a few spaces available in the Older 3-Year-Old (Tuesday, Thursday only) class. Please contact our office at 757-481-1180 to schedule a tour today. Helpful information can be found on our website at www.holyfamilydayschool.org.

Thank You to all who participated in Holy Family Day School’s Spirit Night at the YNOT Pizza – Great Neck Location.

Box Tops For Education: Box Top collection is a year-round program and we are so pleased with the excellent response to this fund raiser for the school. The box outside the welcome office is the place to drop off your donation. Thank You!

Farm Fresh Receipts: We are once again collecting Farm Fresh receipts to earn points toward the Day School’s educational supplies so please save your receipts and bring them for the Day School.

NEW EVANGELIZATION NOTES

What is our Mission? The essential mission of the Church is to evangelize all people. That was the great commission from Jesus Christ found at Matthew 28:19. Over 1,900 years later, Pope Paul VI reaffirmed this number priority for the Church in his encyclical Evangelization in the Modern World.

Evangelizing is about giving the good news of Christ to others. Since you can’t give what you don’t have, we invite you to make a true encounter with Jesus Christ. Let us be like the disciples on the Road to Emmaus and have the words of Jesus Christ set our hearts on fire.

If you have questions about the New Evangelization, please don’t hesitate to ask any NET member or contact us at [email protected].

DIOCESE OF ARLINGTON ∙ DIOCESE OF RICHMONDRepresenting the Virginia Catholic Bishops in Public Policy Matters

Statement by Bishop Paul S. Loverde and Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo

On Supreme Court Refusal to Hear Appeal of Virginia Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

With deep disappointment, we learned that the U.S. Supreme Court has denied review of lower-court decisions that struck down Virginia’s law prohibiting same-sex marriage and similar laws in four other states. Because of the Supreme Court’s denial, marriages between couples of the same sex have begun in Virginia. This occurrence reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the intrinsic nature of marriage and represents an injustice to over a million Virginia voters, whose decision was to enshrine the understanding of marriage as the union of one man and one woman into our state’s constitution. Marriage has been affirmed by countless generations because it uniquely benefits the common good by recognizing the union of two equal but complementary individuals – that is, a man and a woman – who, by their life-giving union, may create a family. Marriage not only benefits the man and woman who enter it, but also best serves children because of the particular contributions that mothers and fathers bring to family life. Therefore, Virginia’s constitution rightly recognized the unique contributions marriage makes to children and to the common good.

As Bishops, we will continue to affirm the truth about marriage, the lifelong union of one man and one woman, as well as its essential importance to the common good. As pastors, teachers, and faith leaders, we can do nothing less. It is our fervent hope that the Supreme Court will reconsider this fundamental issue in the future.

2014 RED MASS: The Most Reverend Francis X. DiLorenzo, Bishop of Richmond, and The Saint Thomas More Society invite everyone in the Richmond Diocese to join in worship and fellowship at the 31st Annual Red Mass and Dinner on Friday, November 7. Rev. Msgr. R. Francis Muench, J.C.L., Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Richmond, will celebrate the Red Mass at 5:30 p.m. at Saint Benedict Catholic Church, 300 North Sheppard Street, Richmond. Dinner will follow in the Halsey Lecture Hall at the Virginia Historical Society, across the street from Saint Benedict Catholic Church. The keynote address will be given by Mark Rienzi, Senior Counsel at The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, representing the Little Sisters of the Poor, and by Sister Loraine Marie Maguire, Superior Provincial of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Dinner tickets are $50.00 each. The Saint Thomas More Society is an educational, fraternal, and service organization of Catholic lawyers. Further information can be obtained from Society President, James Schliessmann at [email protected] or 804-873-1035.

In the month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation. Please join us here at Holy Family on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. October is the month of the Rosary primarily because the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. Please join us the first Saturday of each month at 5:00 p.m. for the Rosary. 2014 WHITE MASS: On the weekend of October 25/26, Bishop DiLorenzo invites you to attend one of the Annual White Masses listed below. The White Mass honors the giftedness of persons with disabilities held during a regular Mass time. It sends a message to all parishioners and affirms that through the Sacrament of Baptism, “each of us has a place at the table of the Lord.” You are invited to attend to witness the participants giving glory and praise to God, and thereby reminding us that we are all created in His Image.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY is this Sunday, October 19. It is a day set aside for the Catholic Church throughout the world to publicly renew its commitment to the missionary movement. It was created by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and is celebrated the third Sunday of October every year.

USED SHOES FOR ANGEL BINS:Our Cox High School Students need your help with their “Used Shoe Drive.” The PTSA must collect 10,000 pairs of used shoes that are rubber banded together or tied together. Don’t worry, we have a place to store the shoes at Cox High. The shoes will be distributed to countries that are underdeveloped. We take sandals, boots, high heels, tennis shoes, or any shoes without metal spikes. We are pushing this project in the months of October and November. Thank you in advance for your shoes and for helping those who are in need. You will find our bins in the Family Room by the Respect Life Table.

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH”Parishes have various ministries offering opportunities to its members to use the gifts and talents Yahweh has blessed them with for the enrichment of the parish and the larger community. Among these ministries a few parishes, like Holy Family, have an Environmental Team whose mission is to develop their parish into a Green Church. These parishes strive to put into action the admonitions of Pope Benedict XVI (“if you want to cultivate peace, protect creation” and “it would be irresponsible not to take seriously the signs of a growing environmental crisis”) and Pope Francis (“creation is a gift, it is a wonderful gift that God has given us so that we care for and use it for the benefit of all, always with great respect and gratitude”) who is said to be working on an encyclical about the environment. Some of the accomplishments at Holy Family are: establishing a recycling program; having a bike rack built; replacement of many incandescent bulbs with cfls; initiating the Day School vegetable garden; offering a paperless/plastic-free program to parish groups holding social events; reducing the use of paper, water, and electricity in the bathrooms; highlighting Earth Day at our weekend liturgies; working together with Lynnhaven River Now (LRN) to become a Pearl Faith Community. In case you faithful readers are inclined to go one step further than individual actions on behalf of our Earth’s well-being, you are invited and encouraged to join the Environmental Team. Call Ed Marroni (587-4887 or [email protected]) or Glenn Rodriguez (481-5702 or [email protected]) for details and questions.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE

We rely on many people to keep our Pantry shelves stocked. If you don’t already contribute, please do so! If each member of our parish contributed a few cans we could so easily meet the needs of our monthly Food Pantry.

This week, please bring: Canned Soup, Canned Tuna, and Canned Meat.

In the words of Pope Francis: “We must not forget that true power, at whatever level, is service, which has its luminous summit on the Cross. With great wisdom Benedict XVI reminded the Church many times that for man, authority is often synonymous with possession, dominion, success. For God, authority is always synonymous with service, humility, love. It means to enter into Jesus’ logic, who bends down to wash the feet of the Apostles (cf. Angelus, January 29, 2012), and who says to His disciples: ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them … it shall not be so among you; in fact, the motto of your assembly, no? “it shall not be so among you;” but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.’” (Matthew 20:25-27)

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH:We are all united by the gift of life. How do we recognize the dignity of each and every human person from the moment of natural conception (when a new life begins to BE) until the moment of natural death?

Please prayerfully consider joining us in this important work. If you are interested, please contact Mary Sorrentino at [email protected] or 757-481-0766. If you are unable to attend meetings but would like to receive information on what we are doing, send your email address to [email protected].
