Calendar No. 14 January–March 2011

Chers Amis, Let me first wish you the best of luck for 2011. We have a great year in store and are excited to kick it off with three months of spectacular programs and events. This winter, we are thrilled to welcome some true stars of contemporary French cultures. In February, superstar French actress Carole Bouquet performs Lettres à Génica, a poignant reading of letters by Antonin Artaud. This will be followed by renowned actor Francis Huster’s acclaimed production of Camus’ La Peste, which comes to FIAF following a successful world tour.

In early March, Quebec’s highest-selling classical music ensemble, La Pietà, ends their U.S. tour with music by John Adams, Philip Glass, and Arvo Pärt, led by violinist Angèle Dubeau.

FIAF’s Fashion Talks also returns with three creative geniuses, Oscar de la Renta, Tory Burch, and Lorenz Bäumer, led by Pamela Golbin in enlightening conversations. I hope you step in from the cold and enjoy everything that FIAF has to offer this winter.

Warm wishes for a bright and lucky New Year!

Bien amicalement,

Staying Alive: Surviving Survival Wednesday, March 9 at 8pm“Survivor” means many things to many people depending on whether it is used by artists, psychologists, or politicians. Does “survivor” describe someone who has simply endured trauma or does the term imply a more heroic conquest of fate? Noted novelists Forest and Goldman will parse this word’s usage and deepen our understanding of what surviving might mean—in fiction, as well as in life.

04 05Write About NowPerforming Arts

FIAF is proud to partner with Bookforum and the Villa Gillet to present Write About Now, a program that brings together contemporary French and American authors to discuss their work and how it engages—and is engaged by—the world today. Each event is organized around a topic that constitutes a cultural common ground, and acts as a starting point for dynamic discussions.

The events will be moderated by Bookforum editor Albert Mobilio.

Part of the Villa Gillet’s Walls and Bridges series, presenting nearly 50 cultural events in New York City in 2011. Visit wallsandbridges.net for more info.

Starting from Here: Every Place Tells a StoryThursday, February 3 at 7:30pmHow are stories like maps, and maps like stories? How do we understand and talk about place? These are some of the questions the panelists—American writers Reif Larsen and Peter Turchi and French novelist Philippe Vasset and noted geographer Michel Lussault—will consider from the vantages of literature, psychology, and social science.

Paris / New York: Crisscross ViewsThursday, November 4–Saturday, January 29The FIAF Gallery and La Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) are pleased to extend the popular Paris / New York: Crisscross Views exhibition. This special show proudly presents—for the first time in New York—a collection of MEP’s important archival works.

This exhibition exposes New Yorkers to different visual perspectives by juxtaposing photos by Americans who have worked in Paris with those of their French contemporaries who worked in New York.

The exhibition features works by celebrated photographers Duane Michals, Bruce Davidson, and Ralph Gibson on the American side, and Raymond Depardon, Jeanloup Sieff, and Bernard Pierre Wolff on the French.

Sydney AlbertiniéphémèreThursday, February 10–Saturday, March 12The FIAF Gallery presents a site-specific installation by Sydney Albertini, a young French-American artist currently living in New York. This exhibition is the second half of Albertini’s two-part series, éphémère. The first part, shown in New York in December 2010, presented large-scale drawings that will be brought to life in this more immersive and participatory second installation.

Albertini’s works, compelling in their graphic quality and magnetic abstraction, capture the intimate moments of our quotidian routines. Invoking movement, color, and textiles, her drawings evoke not only fashion, but the essence of human movement and the nature of color, and strive to highlight the beauty of the ephemeral in our daily lives.

Small ChangeWednesday, January 26 at 11amL’Argent de pocheFrançois Truffaut, 1976. Color. 104 min. With Nicole Félix, Virginie Thévenet, Chantal Mercier, Jean-François Stévenin

A timeless classic directed by leading French New Wave filmmaker François Truffaut, Small Change documents the journey to adolescence, as experienced by a group of children living in a French village.
