The following calendar contains a listing of all TCDSB Schools’ Feast or Memorial days. Saints days and Feast days have been aligned with the current liturgical year. School names that take after either doctrinal statements (i.e., Immaculate Conception) also have days set aside in the liturgical year. The Church has a tradition of assigning saints feast days on the day of their death, thereby honouring their entry into heaven. For schools named after people who are not saints, the date of the individual’s death was chosen. However, some schools have communicated to us that they have chosen to honour their namesake on the day of their birth. In this case, that has been noted in the document. If the namesake is still alive, the patron’s birth-date was selected.

Some feast days are based on the Church’s Liturgical calendar. This may change the date that the feast is celebrated (i.e., the date of Easter affects the dates of Blessed Trinity and Holy Spirit and the date of the last Sunday in Ordinary Time affects the date for Christ the King). Schools that have been named after St. Mary, unless otherwise stated, have a number of dates from which they can choose to celebrate their name day. Some of these have been listed beside their name.

HOW TO USE THIS CALENDAR:

It is hoped that each school has an already established tradition of honouring their school name. Schools can use this calendar to help them establish the appropriate celebration date for their community.

SCHEDULING THE EVENT:

For those schools that have feast days occurring during the summer or on other holidays, schools may wish to do the following:

i) Celebrate the event as close to the feast day as possible.

ii) If the day is in the summer, schedule the day either at the beginning of the school year or as a way to end the school year.

iii) If the feast occurs during the March break, schools may wish to schedule the feastday either before the break or after.

iii) For schools whose feast is associated with the Christmas/Epiphany events it is best to schedule the feast after the Christmas Break. This will help to emphasize that the Christmas season continues until the Baptism of Our Lord.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES:

Some schools already have established liturgies and activities planned on their feast day. The following are other suggestions that schools may wish to do.

In addition to planning a:

i) School Eucharistii) School Liturgy of the Word,Schools may also wish to plan:iii) Classroom prayer/story session reflecting on the story of the school’s nameiv) Social Justice Outreach Projectv) School Activity/Play dayvi) Evening Prayer celebration and presentation focusing on one aspect of your namesake’s story

May your school community have a Happy Feast Day!

When selecting readings for a school Eucharist it is usually desirable to choose the readings of the day. If your school is named after a recognized saint and the feast day is listed on the Canadian Liturgical calendar (the missalette: Living with Christ can assist you in this) then the prayers and readings prescribed usually have been chosen to honour this person.

If the school’s name sake is not listed on the Canadian nor Universal Liturgical calendar, then the day’s readings should take precedence.
