Why do foreigners come to America for medical treatment?

For many foreigners living abroad, medical treatment does not come easy, which is why the term medical tourism has emerged. Medical tourism is a term that has originally been coined by the media to describe the rapid growth in the practice of travelling across seas to international borders to obtain proper health care.

Services that people generally attain from medical tourism include elective procedures as well as complex specialized surgeries such as joint replacement (knee/hip), cardiac surgery, dental surgery, and cosmetic surgeries. However, virtually every type of health care, including psychiatry, alternative treatments, convalescent care and even burial services are available.

Increasingly, foreigners are now coming to the United States to obtain in proper health care services that are not offered in other countries. For example, The Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, and Texas Medical Center are all excellent medical institution in the United States to receive medical tourism benefits. It is reported that all these domestic drivers of medical tourism alone report welcoming more than 30,000 patients from more than 100 countries in 2007.

If you want to look into medical tourism, here are some tips to help you:

1. Do proper research: research is

the first step to successful medical travel. Make sure that you do your research on the following: The procedure, the hospital, the surgeon, and the destination country. It is important to inquire about important aspects to medical tourism such as checking certifications, statistics, quality, and training of the hospital and surgeons.

2. Make sure to keep your local doctors informed: You may need your doctors assistance prior to receiving medical treatment via tourism.

3. Have all important documents in order: For each document, make copies and leave one set of copies at a safe place at home. You will need documents such as medical records, a passport/visa, credit cards, and a license. All these documents are important to have when seeking medical tourism.

4. Keep important information handy: Keep the following contact information handy such as emergency contacts, destination embassy, hospi-tals, hotels, local surgeon/doctor, and employer.

5. Be prepare to stay longer or shorter than expected: You should allow ample time for recovery after your surgery before you travel back home. So be prepared to stay longer as advised by your doctor. In some other cases you may not need to stay for as long as was expected.

If you are a new resident in California, it can often times be difficult to meet new people. It is already hard enough entering unknown territory which you are not accustomed to. Therefore, creating new friends is even more diffi-cult. There are numerous ways in which you can network socially that can help you meet new people.

Social Networking - perhaps you may have heard of it before, but are not exactly sure what it means. In simple terms, social networking is the "grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision." Although social networking is common in person, such as schools or in the workplace, the most popular place for social networking takes place online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other internet users to develop friendships and business relationships, too.

If you are a new resident in California, using these sites such as social network-ing can be useful. These sites such as MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates are all social networking sites which you may find beneficial.

Another way to social network can be through a local mosque, church or community organizations. There are several mosque, church and community organizations locations in Southern California (see lists in this magazine) which graciously welcome new residents. By attending these mosques, churches or local community organizations, you can meet a lot of new people and make friends who have similar interests as you. If you would like to see a list of local mosques and churches in California, please go online to (website?)

Social networking is a great way to meet new people. Whether through online networking sites or through your local church, mosque or community organizations, it is easier to meet a fresh group of people in which you can make new friends!

Social Networking & Building Relationships

NAAPLos Angeles Formed in July 2005, the Los Angeles chapter of the Network of Arab-American Professionals (NAAP) has aimed to build an active circle of educated and successful Arab-Americans in the Los Angeles Area.

Through the efforts of its devoted members, NAAP-Los Angeles has managed to build a highly respected, deeply motivated and dynamic organization with a vibrant, contemporary outlook on the problems and promise of the Arab-American community in the United States.

So far this year, NAAP-Los Angeles hosted and co-sponsored a variety of events. One such event included the

organizationʼs joined efforts with the D.C.ʼs Arab American Institute and registered Arab Americans to vote in the Los Angeles region throughout the year. NAAP-LA also held a joint Mixer with the Arab American Lawyers Association. These events bring members together both to network and socialize with other professionals. In addition, NAAP-LA co-sponsored the Miss Lebanon 2008 Immigrant with the World Lebanese Cultural Union. Lastly, NAAP-LA hosted the opening night celebration of the Arab Film Festival in Los Angeles. The Arab Film Festival screens films from and about the Arab World that provide realistic perspectives on Arab people, culture, art, history and politics. Another event to be held later this year is a holiday party in December.

Sights to see in Southern California that you may not know about if you are a vistor.

In California, many people are quick to visit the attractions that are most popular such as Disneyland and SeaWorld. However, there are numerous other attractions such as theme parks and water parks in California that may provide interest to you. Of those, they include:

Knott's Berry farm: With over 166 rides, shows and attractions, Knott's Berry farm is a great place to go for family adventure. With five themed areas, there is something at Knott's for everyone. Experience world-class thrills on rides such as the Silver Bullet- the parks first-ever suspended coaster, or Sierra Sidewinder- the spinning coaster that offers a panoramic view. New in 2008 is Pony Express — the Ride, delivering a horseback relay at high speeds. For something different, detour to the Parks Old West Ghost Town and have a cool sarsaparilla or visit Camp Snoopy, home of the PEANUTS' gang and filled with dozens of kid-sized adventures.

Venice Beach: Located at West Los Angeles on the Santa Monica Bay, the most interesting and popular sight is Venice Beach. Venice Beach is a place where you'll find artists, palm readers and vibrant roller -skaters mixing with chanting, saffron-clad Hare Krishna's and wriggling belly dancers. Located on Venice Beach are the Venice Boardwalk, Muscle beach, and Venice Beach Graffiti Walls. The Venice Boardwalk is more of a sidewalk than a "board" walk, but a walk down it is the best way to explore the waterfront scene. You'll pass street performers, skaters, artists, gawkers and vendors selling all kinds of items from incense to sarongs. Muscle Beach is the place where Arnold Schwarzenegger and hosts of other body-builders have "bulked up" in the outdoor weight room. If you'd like to have your day in the sun, you can buy a day pass

at the office. The Venice Beach Graffiti Walls is where the graffiti artists who gain permits to paint here exhibit a high quality of artistic flair.

LEGOLAND: LEGOLAND is another theme park in California that goes unnoticed which has more than 50 rides, shows and attractions for the whole family to enjoy. LEGOLAND is specifically geared towards children ages 2-12. Also in LEGOLAND is an aquarium called the SEALIFE Aquarium. SEA LIFET is designed to be a child's first interactive guide to the life of the sea, combining active, hands-on learning with fascinating educational talks, and opportunities to have up close and personal encounters with a variety of sea creatures.

Kodak Theater: Located in Hollywood, the Kodak Theatre is a 3,400 seat theatre that opened in November 2001 and soon after became known as the first permanent home of the Academy Awards. Costing $94 million to build, this theatre in Hollywood, CA was designed by the renowned Rockwell Group and is as infamous and spectacular as the artists and celebrity guests that cross it. The stage is one of the largest in the nation. There are also three balcony levels that keep audiences close to the stage and 20 opera boxes for those desiring the VIP treatment. All VIP boxes include digital screens that allow guests to order drinks and souvenirs with just the touch of a button. The Theatre is a design tribute to the grand opera houses of Europe, but also has a new high-tech flare.

The other main attractions in Southern California may be a troubling for some people, as the long lines and expensive entrance can cause much impatience. However, to avoid all that-the attractions mentioned above are just as exciting. Make sure to check them out if you can!

For international students, choosing an accredited American college can be a difficult and confusing process. Many international students may have several questions about choosing the right, accredited college. The following will provide information that will be useful when choosing an accredited college.

Because the United States government does not regulate the quality of educational programs offered at colleges and universities, the accreditation of a university, college or school can tell you if a school has met a minimum standard of quality in its academic programs. Accrediting organizations are authorized by the US Department of Education to set these standards and then evaluate whether a school's program meets them. If so, then the university, college or school is said to be accredited.

There are several different accrediting organizations in the United States, in which universities and colleges may be accredited by just one or by a few. Also, individual programs such as engineering programs at universities and colleges can be accredited by a professional organization that is specialized in that discipline.

It is very important to choose a school, college or university that has been accredited by a proper accrediting organization. By attending an accredited college, university or school, you can be sure that your degree will be recognized by other colleges and universities and by employers. You can find out directly from the school whether it is accredited and also by which organizations. This information may also be available in some college guides.

Here are some useful tips when choosing an accred-ited American college:

1. Considering that ac-credited online colleges should have a strong pres-ence on the internet, begin your research with an internet search.

2. When search-ing for accredited colleges, look for experienced profes-sors, a broad range of electives and the most advanced

technologies available.

3.. Contact the school's admissions departments or ask to speak with a counselor to learn more about the accredited colleges you are interested in.

4. Check the Institutional Accreditation System database. This service is provided by the U.S. Department of Education to find out what accreditation agencies have approved the institution.

5. There are many different college degrees you can choose from, so it's important that the accredited online college you select is well respected.

6. Counselors can be an invaluable asset to you because they can help you understand what bachelors degrees are the best choice for your career path and how long it will take to earn your degree.

7. Beware of bogus accrediting bodies. Some schools set up their own accrediting agencies (which often look legitimate) and then accredit their own school so that they can claim their campus is accredited.

With these information and tips provided, choosing an accredited college has just gotten one step easier! If you would like to learn more about accreditation, please visit http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Index.aspx

By Fatima LodhiMotivated by the immigration of her family from Lebanon to the United States at a young age, Lara Shbeyr-Maxey was inquisitive to learn about the role of politics in immigration, foreign policy, and international relations. Driven by this motivation, Lara Shbeyr-Maxey is a leadership figure for all Arab-Americans that has became vigorously involved in the political process. Shortly after graduating from Notre Dame de Namur University, Lara at-tended Howard University in Wash-ington D.C. to pursue her graduate degree in Public Administration with a concentration in International Relations. While attending Howard University, Lara was an intern at the Arab American Institute in the Community Relations Department. With the desire to work in an Arab American organization, Lara worked on numerous projects that range from planning local community events to conducting national research on Arab Americans in public service and political life. Through this, Lara learned immensely about public activ-ism and the ins and outs of the political process. After attending a Network of Arab American Professionals event in D.C, Lara was astonished to learn that there was not a chapter in her hometown, Los Angeles. After graduating from Howard University and moving back to South-ern California, Mrs. Shbeyr-Maxey co-founded the Los Angeles chapter of NAAP. With her dedicated leadership, NAAP-LA has built an active circle of educated and successful Arab-Americans. Through all the efforts of the devoted NAAP members, this organization has managed to build a highly respected, deeply motivated and dynamic organization with a vibrant, contemporary outlook on the problems and promise of the Arab-American community in Los Angeles. With Lara's active community involve-ment, she has volunteered and worked on a number of political campaigns throughout her career. Those include the democratic campaigns of Gore/Lieberman of 2000, Kerry/Edwards in 2004, and her most memorable-Obama/Biden of 2008. The Obama/Biden campaign was particularly special for Lara because of the historical impli-cations. For Lara, having an African-American husband, it was historical to see all cultures and races unite and vote for an African-American president, a movement to bridge the cultural divide.

As a senior associate at a public affairs and political consulting firm in Los Angeles, as well as community outreach volunteer, many would wonder what Lara's personal life consists of. However, many people would be surprised to know that Lara loves working out and playing soccer with her sister Romy. Just as well, she loves spending time with her husband Kenneth, and family-who she asserts as her support system. Lara's father- Habib, and mother-Najat are her personal heroes who have given Lara an endless amount of love and support throughout her career. Due to the fact that Arab-American's have a vital stake in U.S. public policy both domestically and in the Middle East, Lara's message to Arab-American's is to be actively involved in their com-munity. Lara demonstrates exactly that. With her work through community

outreach programs, campaigning for the Democratic Party presidential elections, and co-founder of NAAP-LA, Lara Shbeyr-Maxey can be seen as a leader-ship role model for all Arab-American's in today's society.

NAAP-LA has built an active circle of educated and successful Arab Americans.

National Network for Arab American CommunitiesCommunity Celebration Dinner

A Sense of Spirit and PrideIt was celebratory, energizing and festive. The room was filled with sense of pride and synergy. Arab Americans from all over the nation came together and joined their counter parts in California to bring knowledge, wisdom and sharing.

This was the atmosphere at the National Network of Arab American Communities “Community Celebration Dinner” on December 5th, 2008.

The evening opened by Emcees Sami Mashney and Hend Alhinnawi who welcomed guests and introduced Mike Abdeen the Host Committee Chair who gave the opening remarks followed by Maha Freij, ACCESS Michigan’s CFO. “We had the shift when we started believing what we are doing” Mrs. Freij said.

After dinner was served a welcome statements were given by Taleb Salhab, National Outreach Director of NNAAC who stressed the importance of creating a network of organizations on the national level which includes youth and community at large and provide them social services they need. Nahla Kayali, Executive Director of ACCESS California spoke and emphasized the fact that ACCESS is “We are one family serving the community.”

Keynote speaker of the event was Director of Michigan Department of Human Services, Ismael Ahmed. Mr. Ahmed stressed that “We live in a country were bad things are happening to good people” and “We have gone beyond the idea that poor people don’t work”. He added “We can change this world collectively”. These inspiring words echoed among attendees who shared Mr. Ahmed’s vision and inspirations. “We are part of the best and brightest this country has, America needs the moral values we

bring to it” he said.

Two awards were presented during the dinner first was by Linda Sarsour, Director of the Arab American Association of New York which was presented to Rashida Tlaib, elected as a State Representative for State of Michigan, for The Emerging Leader Award.

The Spirit of Service Award was presented by Nadia Bettendorf, Chair of Orange County Human Relations Commission to Maria Khani from ACCESS California. Maria serves on the Board of ACCESS California and the Advisory Board of the Tustin Police Department.

Even after the conclusion of the dinner members of the NNAAC and the community continued to celebrate the gathering outside the ban-quet hall were they enjoyed taking group pictures and laughed their way through the evening in a sense of joy and accomplishment.

This conference will remem-bered by many as one of the landmarks of the Arab American movement in the social service arena and as an uplifting moment for generations to come.

Editor’sI have ben asked after our first issue of California Arabic Pages was out “Where are the articles?” “How come your magazine doesn’t have commu-nity news?” and my answer was always that there are many local publications that do just that and we are different.

How and why are we different than other publications?

California Arabic Pages is an extention of the Arabic Yellow Pages that we started in 2006. This means we are

more about community resources and what it offers to the Arab-Americans as a whole. I you have seen our last issue you would have noticed that it was merly page after page of listings of local organizations, embassies, area codes, etc.

In this issue we have included more write ups focusing on number of directions.

First, we wrote some articles with the newcomer to Southern California in mind. What would they want to know about the community, what attractions to see and how to start making friends in the area.

Second, we also considered the local residents who are

familiar with many of the places already and the how abouts in the community. Therefore we covered one major event that took place in Orange in December of 2008 that brought together many Arab-American leaders from around the nation in the National Network of Arab American Communities. This was a landmark event in Southern California that locals needed to learn about.

In between we kept the resources, orgnaiztions, embassies, map, etc. as a reference for poeple to use when they need it.

This is what we pride ourselves on. We are not a typical news magazine, we are a resouce maganize for poeple to use over and over and to keep in their homes, offices even cars. We keep the visitor as well as the long time resident in minde when we plan our editorials every issue.

I hope this give you an insight of our directions and I welcome anyone’s ideas or suggestions about this magazine in hope ot always imporve what we offer and keep the challange and the excitment of bringing you a valuable resource magazine to your life.
