Mr Matthew Hawkins AP IDENTITY

I would like to share two experiences from last week which I think tell something of the St Patrick’s story. This year, our

sixtieth, has been much about telling the story, but it has also been about recognising that we are in the process of

currently writing a new chapter in that story. On Saturday night at the 60 Year Gala Dinner, I think that new chapter

was given a title: A Coming of Age. It was a theme that ran through the evening, from the words and poetry of Rupert

McCall to the engaging, entertaining and wise sentiments shared by Br Damien Price. It was also clear through the video

presentation, masterfully put together by our Campus Minister, Paul Corfield.

The sentiment from the opening lines of “The Call” were never more true. Our day and our hour have come, it seems. As many

suggested on the night, we are no longer the “Northside’s best kept secret”, as our outdated bumper stickers advertise. We

have come of age, though I think it is important to note that we recognise our wonderful achievements with the right mix of

humility, simplicity and of course a touch of good humour. This to me is St Patrick’s.

Br Damien Price told the story so well – he talked about St Patrick’s being a place where boys learned to truly be brothers, in

the ordinary, and in doing so, became extraordinary. St Patrick’s history is filled with simple acts by great people leading to a

better world. What a legacy!

On a similar note, while standing and burning sausages on the Paddies Van bbq last Tuesday morning, I was joined as always

by Ken, a regular patron/Head Chef on the Van. As we were cleaning up, and the boys and I were getting ready to come back

to school, a bloke I had not seen before came to say thanks for breakfast. He had hit a rough patch and told us he really appre-

ciated the meal. He asked us who we were and what this was all about. Before I could answer, Ken simply said, “Mate, this is

just a community bbq.” I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud to be involved with the Paddies Van. Not only did the com-

ment sum up what the Paddies Van is, it also I think got to the heart of who we are at St Pat’s – our identity. Being brother, in

the ordinary…extraordinary.

Come the day and come the hour

Come the power and the glory

We have come to answer Edmund’s call

From the grand old hallways of Morven

St Patrick’s, St Patrick’s

Together standing tall

Shoulder to shoulder

We'll answer Edmund's call!

concelebrated by St Patrick’s College Old Boys: Fr Bernie Costigan, Fr Joe Duffy and Fr Bryan Roe.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

Congratulations to the Year 11 students on the way they conducted themselves at last week’s Dinner Dance. The boys and their partners dressed really well for the event and provided a very calm, happy evening. Their manners were excellent and they really enjoyed the opportunity to cele-brate with each other. Well done, men. Inter-House Athletics All students are expected to attend and participate in the annual Athletics Carnival held on Friday, 17 August. Stu-dents must wear full Sports uniform and go directly to Cur-lew Park on the day. The carnival will commence at 8.30am and conclude at 3.00pm. Parents are most welcome to come and watch or help out with timekeeping and judging. Students will be dismissed from Curlew Park. Buses will drop off and collect students from Curlew Park. The aim of the carnival is to promote participation, House spirit and fun. This is a Special Event Day so students absent from school must have a medical certificate or completed Absence Dec-laration Form. If this procedure is not followed students will be given a Saturday detention. Injured students will be allo-cated a job to help on the day. Being part of a community has many positive outcomes. Being a part of events such as the Inter-House Athletics Carnival is a healthy component of your son’s education at St Patrick’s. Please do not allow your son to take a soft option and opt out of the carnival.

Hair We are at the end of week 5 and have observed that there are a large number of students that are right on the border-line of the hair and grooming policy. I ask that these boys make the necessary arrangements to have their hair-cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week, it would be appreciated if you could attend to this over the weekend. We have spoken to a number of boys and have sent letters to parents of those boys who require to have their haircut earlier. St John Fisher Social Year 8 to 12 only. Friday 24 August. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $10.00. The venue is the Sandgate PCYC. School ID is required. Appropriate clothing needs to be worn including closed-in footwear. All normal school rules and expectations apply. St Patrick’s College is the only school that is invited.

Metropolitan North Information – Track & Field Nominations Nominations are now being called for the Metropolitan North Track and Field Championships to be held at the University of Queensland Track, St Lucia on 28 - 30 August 2012. All students in Years 8 to 12 wishing to attend and trail at this year’s Metropolitan North Track and Field Championships MUST nominate NO LATER THAN FRIDAY 10th August to Mr Ryan Schultz (SPC GYM). Students have been also notified via Daily Notices over the past week.

LATE NOMINATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

THE AFL NEWS AIC AFL is divided into two divisions, the Northern Division includes Marist College Ashgrove, Padua College, Iona Col-lege and St Patrick’s College. The Southern Division in-cludes St Edmund’s College, St Peter’s Lutheran College, St Laurence’s College and Villanova College. All schools play three games in their division. The top two teams in each division then play off in the semi-finals for a possible place in the final. The third placed teams in each division play each other for 5th place, whilst the fourth placed teams in each division for off for 7th place overall. Our Under 14 team finished the season in second place and thus last Monday night played Villanova College with the winning team moving into the final. In probably the best game of AIC football this season (in terms of both AFL skill, team involvement and sportsmanship) the Under 14s lost to Villanova. As a result we now play Marist College Ashgrove next Monday afternoon at Yeronga for 3rd and 4th place in the AFL competition. This game will commence at 4.15 and conclude by 5.30pm. A College bus will transport players to the ground leaving the College at 2.30pm and returning to the College by about 6.15pm. This is our last game of the season.

The Under 16 team played against St Laurence’s College with both teams finishing third in their respective divi-sions. In an impressive demonstration of skill and team-work St Patrick’s defeated St Lawrence’s 107 to 10 to finish the competition in 5th place. Please contact Mr Dominic Crowley (Director of AFL) by email [email protected] for further AFL information.

As part of our commitment as tournament host we will require SPC families to billet some of the representative players from other regions. As a parent of an SPC student it would be very helpful if you could take a billet for the duration of the carnival. It is SPC’s aim to provide a fantastic tournament for QLD School Sport and all of the participating regions and part of this is accommodating players whose parents cannot travel with them. Billets will arrive on the Wednesday 22 August and depart on the Sunday 26 August. They will need to be dropped and picked up from Curlew Park on the Thursday through to the Sunday. If you are able to help out with taking one or two billets can you please contact Mr Ryan Schultz (Coaching Administrator and Tournament Convenor) ASAP at [email protected] or on 0402 600 892. Mr Geoff Samuels Director of Culture

Theatresports2012StateFinals!!!Congratulations to our senior Theatresport team “Monkey Ducklings” who competed in the Youth Theatresports States Finals on Tuesday night at the Powerhouse Theatre. The team consisted of Regan Samuels, Damian Tatum, Duncan Moir, Aidan McArthur, Johnathan Ricks and Josh Smith. These boys have put a huge amount of time and effort into this year’s competition with guidance and support from Miss Rebecca Hewitt and have been a consistently high perform-ing team, playing impressively through all the rounds this season to make the Grand Final. Over 100 teams from nearly 50 schools competed this year so represent the College at the state finals was a very impressive achievement, continu-ing a proud tradition of Theatresport here at St Pat’s. Tues-day night’s final was a tight battle between ‘the best of the best’ with all teams performing strongly on the night. In the end we were pipped at the post by Albany Creek High school who have been the real improvers in this year’s competition. We are very proud of the work of all of the team and there coaches and grateful for the tremendous support the team has received from staff, parents and students at every perfor-mance throughout the year. Well done!

DEBATING NEWS With the Olympics coming to an end...and Australia maybe not providing the dazzling array of 'feel good golden mo-ments' we'd anticipated, it's easy to appreciate that sport's lovers may lapse into a dark depression. But wait, never fear, amazing sporting victories are happening right here at SPC. There's enough debating excitement at the moment to get our own green and gold malaria started. Following on from their incredible toppling of debating giants Churchie, our Year 10s continue their march to grand final glory with a solid victory last night against Brisbane State High. Our debating greats successfully argued the timely topic 'That children should not be able to participate in professional sport'. Special mention must be made of Gerard Denkes who shone in his debut outing as first speaker. If that's not enough to get your sporting pulse racing...our Firsts are also still in the mix for grand final glory following their triumph last night over St Margaret's. Angus Lane, Thomas Huth and Joshua Smith were solid in their argument that 'The media should be allowed to report on the public lives of politicians'. Lachlan Marsh again proved a valuable reference man in the hour long, incredibly intense short preparation room. Congratulations to the respective coaches, Ms Hewitt and Mr Brough. They have put in many hours honing the mental physique of their teams and it is fitting reward to see these teams make the top 8 in the state. Please feel free to join the growing crowd who cheered our boys on this week. We may have missed a few gold in London, don't be one of the only few who misses this debating gold. Debates next Friday night-see next week's Calling for more details. Ms Zoe Morgan Debating Coordinator
