DECEMBER, 1943

«i never pit so sure o an anything ""The most exciting thing that has happened to mefor some time has been the reading of an advancecopy of a book that came all the way from Nor-man, Oklahoma .

The book is called ,

MZi Ziba

Decorations by EDITH MAHIER

J . C . Mayfield, ManagerUniversity Book ExchangeNorman, Oklahoma

by JAMES PIPES

and is published by the University of OklahomaPress. . . . I read it by chance and it has hit me likea block-buster .

"James Pipes has kept a country store in Forty-Acre which is down in the swamplands of Loui-siana .

He has listened to the Negroes who cameto his store to trade and lounge and gamble .

Hetook notes. He assimilated the picturesque andpoetic language and flaming imagination of Ne-groes from sawmills, cotton plantations, leveecamps, and cane farms. He then wrote a bookof long poems out of the tales they told . . abook . . . merely crammedwith natural poetry andhumor, and most exciting to read aloud. He hascaught the magical word-sense and the rich musicof the Negro Improvisations . This is a book; areal contribution to our literature . I never feltso sure of anything."-William Rose Benet in TheSaturday Review of Literature .

"The publication of Ziba is an event, a truly ex-citing event for anybody who is at all interestedin the efforts of men to capture the poetry ofAmerica and her various regions. Mr. Pipes hasmanaged to capture beautifully the imagination, the spiritual quality, the earthiness, and the poetryin the Negroes of whom he has written."-LewSarett .
