In the last edition of Caloundra Buzz we featured an article from the Sunshine Coast Council about the move of the Caloundra Music Festival to the new Queen’s Birthday long weekend in September and the exciting introduction of an entire fringe festival week that will now surround the Festival.

Planning the Caloundra Fringe Festival is progressing rapidly, evolving into a diverse week of arts, culture, culinary, music, dance and sporting activities all with the potential to share the media spotlight with the annual, high profile event, the Caloundra Music Festival. Some big events have already come on-board and locked in their involvement in the Caloundra Fringe Festival including the Festuri Multicultural Festival, Music on Kings, the Bulcock Busking Festival, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation Fun Day and of course, our very own Markets on Bulcock.

The Fringe Festival will provide a unique opportunity to showcase your business and take advantage of visitors to our area and the additional media exposure. How will your business leverage from this amazing event and maximise your potential to increase sales and expand your customer base?

local businesses such as venues, cafes, pubs, clubs are invited to host additional entertainment which, if you let the Fringe Festival team

know early enough, will appear in event program... another promotional opportunity.

The Caloundra Fringe Festival committee is full of ideas and welcomes any and all questions and ideas from the local business community. Sunshine Coast Council have also started the task of compiling a database of musicians, circus performers, artists, photographers, comedians, fashion designers and local businesses wanting to join the fun and opportunities. For more information and to express your interest email [email protected]

So put your thinking cap on, perhaps as a Café or Club you could host a stand-up comedy night; what about theming your restaurant in cultural, music theme; as a community group you may like to organise a treasure hunt; as a fitness centre why not hold Zumba classes in public places. There is almost no limit to capitalise on this event so start thinking about your options.

As your President I would encourage all Chamber members and local businesses to get involved and be part of what’s shaping up to be a signature event which will showcase Caloundra to the world and encourage visitors to eat, drink, stay and play in Caloundra.

Social media spending is expected to increase from $716 million in 2008 to $3.1 billion in 2014, which is a compound annual growth rate of 34%.

This compound growth rate means that social media spending is growing faster than any other interactive marketing category. wow!

Courtesy of www.socialmedianews.com.au

Just like any promotion, there are positives and negatives to participating in coupon deals. Several Caloundra Chamber members have given coupons, in particular Groupons and Deal Ezy a go with a mixed response. If you are approached about coupon advertising for your business, here are some points to consider before signing on the dotted line.

One of the benefits is that the majority of online coupon promotions have an expiry date which adds a sense of urgency and does provide an incentive to spend money quickly with your business.

It’s the sense that if the user doesn’t snap up this deal now, it won’t be available to them at a later date. Coupons also encourage impulse buying, enticing those who perhaps would not normally purchase a particular product, to do so as they are ‘grabbing a bargain’.

Another plus is that coupon promotions are a relatively easy marketing tactic to measure. If you are a small business it may be quite simple to count the number of coupons that are physically handed into your store, ensuring of course, that your staff are consistent with collecting them from customers. This is an easy measurement of success, whereas determining the exact number of customers that visit your store due to a generic radio or press advertisement may be more difficult to monitor.

A negative is that coupons have a relatively limited target audience. To receive Groupon or Deal Ezy promotions

for example, you must have signed up to the website as a subscriber. So be sure to enquire about the number of subscribers within your target area before signing up with a provider.

A point which has been discussed openly on many blogs on the internet, is something referred to as ‘coupon clutter’. Coupon clutter refers to both physical coupons (such as shop-a-dockets and coupons placed in mailboxes) and also the online versions. There are masses of sites and businesses offering this service, so much so, it can be difficult to determine the right site to choose and good amount of research needs to go into your offer to ensure its effectiveness against competition. It is possible that coupons are almost flooded in the market place.

One of the main reasons businesses take up coupon advertising is with the hope to generate traffic with the opportunity to ‘up-sell’ to a more profitable product or services than what is discounted on the coupon. Coupons may also entice new customers to you, customers that have perhaps been previously shopping with your competitor. Consumers may break routine shopping patterns to take advantage of a good coupon offer.

However, coupons are targeted at ‘bargain hunters’, who may not be willing to spend much, or even any amount further than the coupon value. These customers can be hard to up-sell, so consider implementing tactics such as a discount off a variety of services, rather than just one particular give-away to encourage greater spend. This

was the issue that Caloundra Chamber Member Portobello by the Sea was stuck on, when considering using coupon advertising. The amount of up-sell that would be required to make a profit from a coupon deal was perhaps just too great a risk to take.

Be sure to read the fine print and check the cost arrangements before signing up with any advertising and coupons are no different. Several sites offer no up-front out of pocket expenses but keep up to 50% of the revenue from each coupon sold. However, as Chamber Member Red Hot Chilli Pepper let us know about, be warned that this does not necessarily mean that those customers will cash in those vouchers with you, leaving you out of pocket!

The increasing popularity of social media is a benefit of coupons. If you are an active user of social media you may have already noticed this happening. As many of these are online arrangements it is very easy for people using social media sites to provide a link to your coupon to share the excitement of a great deal, an additional free method of advertising, which you can encourage yourself from your own social media pages.

If you do decide to give coupon advertising a go, we would be interested to hear about your experience. let us know at the Caloundra Chamber. Pop an email to [email protected]

“I participated in a Groupon deal at Xmas time. The response rate was poor (only 9 vouchers bought) and the people that bought the vouchers only came into the shop to collect those specific items and didn’t purchase anything else, so I feel it was a total waste of time. I think restaurants or people in the hotel industry may get more out of this than retail businesses. I also had to negotiate hard with Groupon itself as they wanted me to sell for cheaper than what I wanted. The other thing is, if vouchers are bought and are not cashed in, Groupon keep the money, it doesn’t get passed onto you!”

Vicki Red Hot Chilli Pepper Pty ltd, Bulcock St

“we considered participating in a coupon deal at the beginning of year, but decided against it for the time being. we just felt we needed to do a lot more research before diving into this type of marketing as we had heard some negative feedback from some other accommodation houses who had attempted this. we certainly think that coupons might be an excellent promotional tool for businesses who are able to offer smaller, more direct savings, however with accommodation it is very difficult to offer the dramatic amount of discount pretty much required for these coupons to make the promotion attractive. we are not sure that this would be a financial viable option for us.”

rosa Portobello by the Sea, Dicky Beach

we sold thousands of tickets through various Coupon Deals. we honoured every single ticket and at times had to put an extra boat on, but we felt that the whole thing was a customer relations exercise anyway and profit was not necessarily the goal. Certainly there have been several thousand people who now know about the wonderful waterways of Caloundra, where the wharf is, and where to stay, have lunch, buy an ice cream!

There are a number of coupon systems and some are far more generous to the business holder than others. The system of collating the tickets can be arduous in the extreme with some deal companies. They, of course, get the money up front, and it is up to the diligence of the business owner as to how much cash comes his way.

we found, after doing coupons for a few months, that we could demand what we thought was a fair return and the Deals Company would oblige, because we had “delivered the goods” before.

Generally the demographic cruising with us were pleasant young families with loads of little children, with Mum making the initial internet enquiry. SO many children aboard could sometimes be a bit much for the Captain! I think too, that the product was perhaps not valued by some guests because it was so cheap.

There has certainly been bad press about deals, and deservedly so. Hairdressers who could NEVER honour so many customers. Dinner at an exclusive restaurant where the menu is nothing like “exclusive”. The pet product which “ran out”. Its unchartered waters and I am sure this phenomena, good bad and ugly, will not go away!

rose Caloundra Cruise, Pelican waters

“we recently completed a program with Deal Ezy and found it to be very easy to do and successful. Basically, a consultant came to our workshop to discuss our needs and we decided on a customer price of $39. For this price the customer received a log book service and complete professional wheel alignment plus a $50 voucher towards any work on the next visit (valued at $214). with the voucher remaining valid for three months. Terms and conditions were very easy to understand with customers paying for all parts. we did not pay anything ourselves, Deal Ezy collected the $39 from the customer and we received 70% of the amount collected, with the 30% balance from each sale going to Deal Ezy. Customers made the appointment with us and all who have used their voucher, so far have been more than happy. The only slight down side to this is how many people actually know about Deal Ezy. It is fairly new and still building up a client base. The public need to know about it and agree to have an email sent to them on a daily basis to be aware of what deals are happening. we will certainly look at doing it again in the near future.”

the key is you!

The key to business today, more than ever before, is our ability to connect with people and build relationships. The key to building relationships is to listen. The ability to listen and understand defines all our relationships, professional or personal.

One of my boys said to me recently “Dad, I believe if we want to be listened to, we need to listen first.”

At Caloundra Air Conditioning we will always listen and take the time to understand.

As new Caloundra Chamber of Commerce member, Caloundra Air Conditioning we have recently gone through rapid expansion throughout Queensland, offering sales, installation and maintenance services to a growing list of top name commercial and residential clients.

Formed in the mid nineties as a subsidiary of Carseldine Air Conditioning of Brisbane, Caloundra Air Conditioning came to life in response to growth potential here on the Sunshine Coast.

They have recently appointed me, Graham Hyndman as their new Sales and Operations Manager in Kawana as a sign of reaffirming their commitment to the Sunshine Coast business community.

I bring 25 years of experience in the air-conditioning industry and believe that the key to a successful business is in continual self improvement.

Caloundra Air Conditioning prides itself on professional results, reliability and exemplary service. These standards of service and relationships with customers don’t just occur and don’t just continue to maintain themselves, in business today, the key really is you!

we surround ourselves with the best people we can find, and with a combined staff of approximately 25 employees, we can offer all things air conditioning. From a wide variety of services ranging from system design, supply, installation and maintenance from small domestic systems through to large commercial chiller systems.

By listening, we understand our staff’s needs and through appreciation and recognition we are able to create a powerful team connection. If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings, you almost don’t have to manage them.

My sales mentor (Dan Cavalli) once said to me, “If you want to raise the quality of the people you attract into your life, then you need to raise the quality of yourself! So, by taking personal responsibility we continue to grow.

when a customer purchases from you, it is almost, never about price; it is never about the slickest spiel, or the depth of knowledge of a product, but it always about the personal connection. The person you relate to the most. The person you trust the most. This is why “you, are always the key”!

kochie!!!

I like David Koch. I must confess I like Mel, Natalie and Fifi more, but David, by my standards, is a cut above the rest when it comes to daytime television.

BUT, and this is a big BUT, I like David far less when he delivers blanket statements such as a “property catastrophe is underway in places like the Sunshine and Gold Coasts”. I was going to stay out of this, but the negative impact of David’s comments has been substantial. The power of celebrity these days cannot be underestimated, and with it should come much more care.

Yes, both coasts have experienced a sustained property downturn. And for generic lifestyle-orientated property in both locations, the decline in value might not yet be over. For well- understood reasons, the current situation is warranted.

But there are always markets within markets and available advice beyond “just don’t go there”. As I covered a few weeks back, a property’s value is only partially dependent on the broader market conditions. Studies show that about 40% of growth (or otherwise) can be explained by trends in the overall market. The all-important 60% comes down to more individual factors such as location, the style of housing, its design and inclusions, and the income/demographics of the area.

A major driver behind this 60% is new infrastructure. I have googled David Koch and discovered that on many occasions, he supported such claims. David and libby’s investment advisory columns frequently advocate such.

So why, David, is a place like Kawana (which is on the Sunshine Coast) up shite creek, when one of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia – being the 6th largest teaching hospital in the world – is about to start construction? And in support, there is a hell of a lot more going on in the Kawana area on the Sunshine Coast that most know about. It is, after all, about a kilometre away from the beach, so maybe the Sunrise cameras couldn’t find it.

The statistics are somewhat mind blowing. let me bore you for a minute or two whilst I recite some of them:

The Sunshine Coast University Hospital or SCUH for short will be a PPP with Queensland Health. The short-listed partnership consortiums are lend lease; Thiess/AbiGroup and lang O’Rourke. Construction starts in 2014, with stage one of 450 beds completed in 2016, expanding to 738 beds in 2021. The hospital will create 2,000 construction jobs and 3,500 permanent jobs once complete. It is

expected that over 15,000 people will visit the hospital each and every day.

Ramsay Private Hospital. Co-located with SCUH. Construction is now underway and in late 2014 this 200-bed private hospital will house 700 permanent employees and create 360 jobs during construction.

SARC or the Skills, Academic and Research Centre will provide teaching and research within the hospital campus. A $61 million capital investment, with 150 academic and support staff catering for 1,300 students each year.

KHIP (don’t you love all these acronyms) or Kawana Health Innovation Park will be a commercial precinct distributed across a number of sites across the hospital campus.

Kawana Town Centre and medical precinct. The town centre – adjacent to the SCUH, will commence in 2013 too. The town centre incorporates 80,000m² of retail, commercial, community and entertainment facilities as well a medium density residential sites. The town centre is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs during construction and similar in permanent positions upon completion.

The “Kawana Health Hub” – for the sake of calling it something – is a very big regional initiative, comparable with a major resources project. Yet few know about it. It is a game changer; a recovery catalyst; a smart job generator which the likes of David Koch should be spruiking rather than carpet bombing.

For those who are a little poor at maths, the Kawana Health Hub will employ around 2,000 construction workers at any one time between now and at least 2016. In addition, it is projected – yet international case studies of similar major infrastructure projects suggest a higher multiplier – that 10,000 permanent jobs with be created in the locality. The vast majority will be new jobs.

The back of an envelope demand analysis – relax I have been doing them for close to 25 years and rarely get this stuff wrong – suggests that 10,000 new jobs will create the demand for between 5,500 and 6,000 new dwellings. Yet, the approved residential offerings in the region suggests that 3,500 new dwellings can be supplied in the adjacent ‘Birtinya’ neighbourhood and a further 1,000 new residents on the beachfront parcel known locally as ‘Bokarina’.

The projected 10,000 permanent jobs, by the way, exclude those generated from new housing construction, which most readers know can also be substantial.

The average daily spend in the Kawana area over the next five years will be $1.5 million. I repeat - $1.5 million per day.

The Sunshine Coast University Hospital alone is valued at $2 billion and represents almost a quarter of the current Sunshine Coast regional economy. It is estimated that it will inject about $700 million into the Sunshine Coast economy every year and will be the Coast’s single largest employer.

Now for the life of me, I don’t see how this part of the Sunshine Coast can be labelled “catastrophic”. Oh, and by the way, three-quarters of the Sunshine Coast’s permanent population of 340,000 actually live within the Kawana catchment area.

So, David, instead of labelling the Gold and Sunshine coasts as “property catastrophes” maybe a more subtle message is needed. May I suggest something like -

“There is little doubt that both the Gold and Sunshine coast residential property markets are doing it tough. Buyers do have a lot of choice and for generic lifestyle-orientated stock; asking prices are still under pressure.

Astute buyers of older second hand stock, however, can now buy below replacement cost. Investors should always focus on property adjacent to existing and especially new infrastructure. The most successful residential investors also hold for the long-term.

There are buying opportunities on both coasts. You just need to do your homework first.”

Now, I wonder if this missive will get me a gig on Sunrise?

“The book became so much more than just my next book. Although the story was largely sketched out, the next year would see me channel so much energy, re-awakening and personal discovery into each of the characters that grace its pages.

IndIyum REStauRantWe interviewed new Chamber member, Gurinderjit Singh, Owner and Chef de Cuisine of Indiyum Restaurant about some of great ways he is using technology to improve his business opportunities and to tell us about Birbal.

the Caloundra Chamber is excited to have you as a member with your new business, Indiyum.

“Yes, it is great to be on-board. The soft opening of Indiyum happened during the last week of June last year, but the commercial launch was on 1st July 2011 So we are only about nine months old.”

“As a new business in town, being a member of the Caloundra Chamber means I am firstly part of the local business community. It gives me the opportunity to network with other business owners and operators, build awareness and leverage marketing. Also, being a member enables me to understand better the intricacies of local business trends, marketing ideas and take advantage of business opportunities.”

you have a very interesting professional history, how did you come to opening your own Indian restaurant?

“I grew up in India, but actually started my career in Japan, graduating from Hattori Eiyo Senmon Gakko and receiving my Japanese Chef license in Tokyo. I migrated to Australia in 1990 and started a restaurant on the Gold Coast. I ran this business for years, but returned to India to work as the Senior Corporate Executive for a multiplex chain, and then for the largest retail organisation in India. I did this for eleven years, but felt it was time to get back to Australia and follow my dream – to open my own Indian restaurant with a twist. So when an opportunity came my way to purchase a freehold property here in Caloundra, I went for it!”

you seem to really have embraced technology, Indiyum has a great website. Can you tell us a bit about how you are using technology to benefit your business?

“I have always believed in leading through design and technology, adapting to change. Social media like Facebook is a big medium to promote business today. I am therefore constantly finding new ways to promote my business through these platforms. I also believe in the positive of being in-touch with my community, particularly directly with my customers. I keep them updated about specials, promotions and Indiyum news through my in-house, electronic newsletter called ‘Yummy Times’.”

“It isn’t just computer based technology either that is important to keep up to date with. I describe my cuisine as ‘modern Indian’ with flair, and in order to be modern in my menu I have adopted modern cooking techniques. For example, I invested in a combi oven instead of the traditional tandoori oven because I felt the tandoori technology was too out-dated and required a specific skill set to operate. The combi oven offers more versatility, letting me do a wide range of dishes. It cooks my kebabs perfectly and I do the best Naan breads in town.”

We can see you have an adorable little character who is helping you with your marketing. Who is this cute little elephant?

“when I started Indiyum, it was very clear in my mind that I wanted to create a brand that stood for quality food, quality service and quality customer service. I created Birbal, my elephant mascot to appeal to kids. He is witty, intelligent and very naughty. He is a rare amalgamation of beauty and brawn, gentle in his outlook but as strong as ten horses. The character is inspired by an Indian folk legend who used to be the Minister in Emperor Akbar’s court, nearly 500 years ago. He was famous for his wit and humour.”

“I plan for Birbal to become an integral part of the business, communicating with kids who I believe are a very important market consideration, in particular when branching into the areas of take away and home delivery services. I want to be able to reside in their mind space through Birbal and capture their imagination. In order to do that, I am very conscious that kids don’t often eat spicy foods, so we have a great kids menu selection. A lot of curries are not spicy, yet very flavoursome. Through Birbal I hope to educate kids (and then of course, also their parents) about Indian food and culture. There are many ways that I plan to activate a strong kid marketing program through Birbal… so keep watch!”

tourism update

Over the last few editions of Caloundra Buzz we have been investigating the five key drivers to developing the Sunshine Coast’s tourism sector.

we have already discussed the first two drivers, the upgrade of the Bruce Highway from Caboolture to the Sunshine Motorway and the much needed review of restrictive liquor licence and entertainment laws. we also need to look at the incentives needed to attract major tourism investment to the Sunshine Coast which is the third key driver in our discussion on tourism development.

Tourists visit the region for a variety of reasons and as consumers become better informed and have so many destination choices available to them, the need for the Sunshine Coast to upgrade its business proposition increases.

Projections from the Queensland Government’s Sunshine Coast Tourism Opportunity Plan 2009 -2017, suggest that the number of visitors pursuing outdoor activities, such as fishing and surfing, and outdoor activities, such as going to the beach or bushwalking is on the increase. The demand for local attractions and tourist activities is also on the rise as is the number of visitors undertaking social activities, such as eating out at restaurants and sightseeing.

As such, it is proposed that a whopping 884 new hotels, resorts, motors and/or motor inn rooms and 142 new visitor hostel beds would be required to meet these anticipated visitor activity increases by 2017. Given existing capacity, investment is needed in refurbishment and renovation of existing properties together with new greenfield developments. Investment in tourism products and tourism related infrastructure will be required in order to meet the future needs of visitors to the region.

we should also be focusing attention on our fourth key driver, the development of a conference and/or convention centre on the Sunshine Coast.

Business and event travel is leading the recovery in Queensland’s tourism sector and the Sunshine Coast is missing out. with our heavy reliance on the leisure market and the lack of major quality infrastructure to attract large scale business conferences and events, the Sunshine Coast will struggle to effectively compete with other regions.

The development of Maroochydore’s new Principal Activity Centre provides the perfect opportunity for the State to work cooperatively with Council and other investment partners to stimulate business tourism, create jobs and restore confidence.

with developing links to China and the opportunities to grow the Coast’s fledgling inbound tourist sector, the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport is critical for all the obvious reasons, and this is our fifth and final key driver to developing the tourism sector. Also, the recent acquisition of the

Hyatt Regency Coolum by Clive Palmer has placed a level of certainty and confidence amongst the tourism sector that growth in inbound tourism is imminent.

when the State Government recently replaced the former 20 year outlook contained in the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan with an overarching Queensland plan forecasting just four years, the commitment to expand the Sunshine Coast went with it. Although requiring federal funding as well as Council support, the State has failed to demonstrate a commitment to this critical piece of regional infrastructure. As the overarching plan for the State grows, the airport needs to be reinstated into the Queensland Infrastructure Plan.

we can look back and see a number of key factors that have contributed to the tourism sector’s recent down turn, such as the 2010/2011 floods and the GFC. As a business community we know these types of environmental factors are completely uncontrollable but what we should be doing is inspecting our own business proposition and make it the best that it can be. we also need to effectively lobby the policy makers and get them on side to work with business to achieve sensible commercial outcomes for the region’s economy as a whole.

Business events come in a range of forms, from meetings to business breakfasts, networking functions and event exhibitions. Events are an important way in which we can generate new ideas, collaborate on business opportunities and indeed generate new business by networking. There is no end the number of business events available and it is worth our while to assess

each opportunity and the positive effect it could have on our business success.

Business events also have a direct and immediate effect on the local economy from delegate and event organiser expenditure in the local market place. Statistics from Business Events Sunshine Coast show that on average, a national

delegate will spend $377 per day while attending a Sunshine Coast business event and an international delegate will spend $434 per day. The more events a region can attract the more local businesses will benefit, through the multiplier effect and the higher profile the host region will receive through the event’s own marketing.

how long have you been on the sunshine Coast? I grew up on the Sunshine Coast, going to school at Bli Bli and Nambour, and playing sport across the region. I went to Darwin when I was 17, and spent a few years in Brisbane before returning to the Coast in 2000, just prior to the birth of my first son. I have been here ever since and look forward to being here for a long time yet.

how long did you spend in the hospitality industry? I have worked in the hospitality industry for 19 years, starting as a porter at the Casino in Darwin in 1993. Since then I have worked in Brisbane at the Carlton Crest Hotel, and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Since my return to the Sunshine Coast I have worked at Hyatt Regency Coolum, Novotel Twin waters and Crowne Plaza Pelican waters.

What prompted the change of role? It was such an amazing opportunity, I am very passionate about seeing tourism in Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast reach its full potential, and over the past two years have been involved in a couple of advisory groups. To have the opportunity to put my experience and passion to good use is something I am very excited about.

This helicopter was one of two involved in the battle of long Tan, Vietnam 1966, in which the ANZACs were outnumbered 26 to 1. Eighteen Australian soldiers lost their lives during the battle, and it is estimated up to 800 North Vietnamese Army and Vietcong soldiers perished.

In the fierce battle of long Tan just over 100 Australian soldiers from 6RAR turned away over 2500 Vietcong in a blinding monsoon. late in the afternoon soldiers were running critically low on ammunition and without new supplies would have been overrun in a very short period of time. This aircraft, captained by Cliff Dohle, took off in the treacherous conditions and flew at treetop height, loaded with the ammunition, and replenished supplies to our soldiers in the middle of the fire fight. The crew placed themselves in huge danger in the face of enemy fire and showed great poise, bravery and skill. It is widely acknowledged that if they didn’t do what they did, Australian troops could have been overrun.

This dedication has come about from the cooperation of the Caloundra RSl sub-branch and the RSl Services Club, together with the 6 RAR Association, Vietnam Veterans and Former 9 Squadron personnel.

This display of A2-1022 will add to a significant and growing Military Museum at the Caloundra RSl and will provide Vietnam Veterans and all Australians that have gone to war for their country, an appropriate place to be acknowledged and remembered.

we may soon be able to enjoy access to free wireless internet (wi-Fi) in certain public places across the Sunshine Coast as part of a one year trial endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Council during February this year.

The trial is subject to the procurement of a suitable private wi-Fi provider. The locations for the trial sites will be determined through the procurement process.

The trial will provide a working opportunity for Council to access the costs and benefits of the service to residents, visitors and local businesses – with Council’s intention that the cost of the trial will be largely borne by the private provider.

CaloundRa South updateCaloundra South is a proposed new Stockland master-planned community, located on a 2,310 hectare former forestry site which is a Queensland Government declared Urban Development Area.If approved, the project will be progressively built in stages over a 20 to 30 year period, with Stockland expecting the site to offer homes, economic and lifestyle opportunities for approximately 50,000 residents when completed. Stockland has advised that large areas of the natural environment will be enhanced and conserved within the site, including a dedicated 440ha Environmental Protection Zone and rehabilitated waterway corridors to provide additional habitat and buffer to the Pumicestone Passage.

Council has stipulated that while the sites will be determined by the successful provider, the trial must be conducted in a mix of coastal and hinterland locations.

The move will allow residents, tourists and businesses alike to stay connected digitally to the world.

To proceed, the project needs approval from the Urban land Development Authority (UlDA). In December 2011, Stockland lodged a Master Plan with the UlDA for assessment. The Master Plan identifies the intended land uses across the site and the proposed community, environmental and infrastructure outcomes. The public notification phase for this application recently closed on the 9th March 2012.

During this phase, the Master Plan application was available for public comment at the Caloundra South Information Centre located at 87b Bulcock Street, Caloundra; at a series of community road shows held throughout the Sunshine Coast and on the UlDA website.

The Caloundra South Development is also subject to Federal Government approval. Based on environmental considerations, Stockland has referred the project to the Federal Government under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, and is currently preparing a Public Environment Report (PER) in accordance with Federal Government guidelines. The draft PER is expected to be available for public comment later in 2012.

The UlDA application and the Public Environment Report are subject to separate statutory public review processes.

Better known as ‘Miss Donna the Clown’ and ‘Great Scott’, they have independently carved professional careers and reputable names for themselves following their dreams, and are well on the way to building an empire. Their vision of grandeur is all encompassing and emphasizes community, fun and reaching your true potential.

when he’s not street performing, Great Scott runs Juggle wizz, a circus school and online website selling all sorts of circus toys from fire sticks to unicycles. Some of his merchandise is made at his home workshop; a busy and colourful space bursting at the seams with invention and inspiration.

Scott began his full time circus career in 2002 when he took a leap of faith leaving his day job as a cabinet maker and stepping into the limelight. It was his mentor, Australia’s community circus Godfather, Reg Bolton that took him to the edge and urged him to fly saying “You will never be ready, just make a start”. Great Scott jumped in and the rest is history.

In Donna’s case clowning around and partying is a full time job - Miss Donna attends approximately 150 parties a year. Children’s eyes light up when Miss Donna enters a room; she brings out the child within, in kids of all ages (and adults too).

Miss Donna twists balloons with such speed and grace that you would think it were easy but she takes her balloon art very seriously. On a recent trip to Arizona to attend Twist and Shout, a prominent balloon twisting convention, she took out second place in the medium balloon sculpture competition with a Smurf world creation that took twelve long hours to create.

That was some 18 years ago and over time her one-woman kids’ party entertainment has evolved into something much bigger – now offering an assortment of over 20 entertainers including face painters, magicians, stilt walkers, fire twirlers, musicians and more.

Part of the vision is to see the Sunshine Coast circus industry thriving with young emerging talent. Both Scott and Donna teach their respective art forms; circus and balloon twisting, by means of workshops, promoting the benefits of creativity and self expression to anyone interested. And the appeal is ever growing - circus is a world that just about everyone finds some connection or fascination with.

Miss Donna and Great Scott love what they do.

You can catch Great Scott at the Markets on Bulcock. They are available for parties, events, workshops and celebrations of all size and description. Great Scott runs circus training workshops on Monday afternoons at lake Kawana Community Centre.
