woodland areas where we had to think like a Borrower and try to forage for interesting things that a Borrower might use. Everyone had such a fabulous day and it was a lovely way to extend all of our great learning about Arrietty. Well done to our KS1 students!

6. 100% Attendance Day A message from Ms. Webber: “We are pleased to share the date for our first 100% attendance day of the year - Thursday 20th October. Last year we did really well and this year we want to do even better and reach that golden target of 100%. Please support our initiative and help us to reach that target”. 7. Y6 Secondary Transfer A reminder to Parents/ carers that the deadline for Y6 Secondary applications - Pan-London is 31st October this year, if you still have any questions or queries please e-mail or pop in next week to catch up with me or Mr. Yeats – good luck! 8. Food Experience Update Ms. Webber tells us: “Thank you to everyone for your enormous support in developing our Food Experience this term to include all our Nursery, Reception, KS1 students an Y3 students in our Greenside lunches – it’s so lovely seeing them all sharing the experience. Please keep talking with us if there are any problems or concerns – however small – our aim is for all our students year on year to have a Greenside lunch and as we build up to this we will work with you to find food that works for everyone! We have realized that there has been a mix up with our menu on the Greenside website. We can now confirm that this error has been rectified and the correct menu is now displayed. Please accept our apologies for this error”. 9. National Poetry Day Many of our students celebrated this lovely day with their own poems on Thursday. I am delighted to share the 1st commission given to our new Poet Laureate who was asked over night to write a poem entitled The Essence of Greenside – it is quite beautiful!

The Essence of Greenside

(1st commission as Poet Laureate)

By Hick

The essence of Greenside where do I start?

We’re all here together not a single bad part,

Come sit in class ready for fun,

We’ll take hard work and still get it done,

Give us harder work we’ll still cruise through,

Everyone’s happy no one’s blue.

We work as a team,

It’s perfect! You’d think it a dream,

We are a team from Year 1 to Year 6,

It’s useful as everyone has their own little trick,

Our learning’s done in a different fashion,

Inside us we know it’s our passion.

The essence of Greenside, what else do I say?

Enjoy what you see we hope you will stay.

10. Greenside Home Learning Challenge To celebrate National Poetry further this week I am inviting all poets across every year group to write a poem in the style of their choice – it could rhyme, not rhyme be a series of haikus, acrostic or just free style entitled quite simply ‘Autumn’. This is a chance for students to spend some time at home crafting a piece of writing to the best of their ability for publication in a future Newsletter. Poems are welcome from Nursery students all the way through to Y6 and due to KBS by Friday 21st October. Poems may, of course be illustrated with beautiful autumnal colours and they may be hand written, painted or typed and e-mailed to me. Thanks you in advance for encouraging your daughter/ son – it would be great to receives a record number for our own Greenside publication. 11. STAR Day Sharing a) Reception – Who’s been eating my porridge? A message from Ms. Morra: “This week we have been making porridge because we have been studying the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The students were able to follow instructions, measure the ingredients, and they also enjoyed tasting their homemade porridge. Please take a look at the pictures to see how much fun we had during this activity! b) ‘Wild Things’ at Greenside! A message from Ms. Maltby & Ms. Tossell: “The theme of Max for King allowed us to explore how Max became King of the Wild Things and in Y3. Last week we made posters outlining his kingly qualities by purchasing all of our supplies from the Wild Things’ Shop. Using role-play activities we explored different ways that Max might rule his Wild Kingdom. For example, he might rule by authority, making all the rules and expecting the Wild Things to listen to everything he says. Another possibility is that Max will treat everyone equally, creating a society where everyone gets exactly the same things. In one example we learned about Max and his sister Claire both wanted to rule the land and delivered speeches before each Wild Thing had a chance to vote. It was interesting to discover that without a ruler the Wild Things were living in chaos, with everyone fighting and no one listening to each other. By focusing on the theme of Where the Wild Things Live we have designed fair tests to see how different conditions affect the growth of plants. It was exciting to dissect a seed and see the different parts then record our knowledge by making sketches. Y3 had a very exciting day on Wednesday, discovering exotic flowers and other 'wild things' that grow on Earth. They then learnt how the transpiration process occurs in plants, and replicated this process using blue dye in water. The results were very cool: our white flowers were turning blue within 70 minutes! By the end of the day we had successfully changed their colour, showing how the water is sucked up from the bottom of the stem to feed the flower! We have also been studying the techniques of Eric Carle using his wonderfully illustrated children’s books. By analyzing his work we are using similar tools and materials to build our end project each week. We have used water colour paints with different textured brushed to wash our background. We then used toothbrushes and tempera paint to build text using splash techniques. To create the grass we applied paint by streaking and then used scratch techniques to add texture. We are now beginning to research and make our insect wings and bodies to complete our art projects this term.”

c) Y5 - The House of Addams A message from Mr. Johnson: “This week Y5 became the ‘House of Addams’ and we staged our own Spooky fashion show. We began the week by writing instructions for making our Addams family inspired outfits and then moved on to costings. We drew designs and then measured out our materials. On Tuesday afternoon came the amazing climax with our very own Fashion Hall staged at that famous West London venue – Greenside! Well done to all our students.” d) Y6 – Jedi Knights! A message from Mr. Yeats and Ms. Simpson: “Y6 have been off to a galaxy far, far away and working hard to become Jedi Knights! Over the last few weeks they have been using their forces for good and rebuilding the Ewok's village and have brought some well-needed technology to the lives of these simple creatures. The latest project is to provide the Ewoks with an electrical alarm defense system to alert them when the evil Storm Troopers come to attack. Y6 explored ways in which they could use their knowledge of electrical circuits to build an alarm system, which could be activated by someone on, look out followed by another alarm system to alert the entire village. They were then generous enough to create scientific diagrams of their circuitry systems to share with the 12 millions world of the Star Wars universe! The force is strong with these ones!” 12. New Student Leaders Thursday mornings at 9.00am promise to be busy and full of World Ready skills each week as around 12 students from each class – Nursery-Y5 and all of Y6 move in to their Student Leader groups to discuss, debate and plan future events and changes to make Greenside even better – we hope you will pop up and see the new photographs in the Entrance area. At their inaugural meeting Student Voice Leaders wrote

Student voice poem:

We are here to help the school,

In a way that makes it cool,

Student voice is one of a kind,

We are here to open your mind,

Student voice can change our town

and turn those frowns upside down. Our SMSC – Charity Leaders also wrote this poem:

Greenside Charity

Being helpful, being kind,

Raising money all the time.

Baking cakes and running miles,

All to make more people smile

Here at Greenside we help each other

Lots of charities we will discover

Holding events to make more money

Granting wishes that make more lives sunny!

13. Zach Groves Travels Away

When Zach joined Greenside 3 years ago we knew he planned to travel the world but we have been very lucky that he delayed his travels a while to stay with us for so long. It has been so fab having him work with us across almost every year group and to lead our Maths learning. During his time with us he married Hanna and they are now ready to make a once in a lifetime travel trip to so many exciting places. We will miss him greatly; we wish him lots of happiness and a fantastic trip. We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ for everything he has done for us and with us at Greenside and look forward to following his adventures on his BLOG and to hearing about them if he returns to London at some point in the future. Thank you and Zach we really hope this is not goodbye!

Dear Greenside Friends and Families, Today marks the last newsletter where I will still be a teacher at Greenside Primary. After 3 years of working at this lovely school in Shepherds Bush, it is time to say goodbye and move on with my next adventure. For those who are not sure, I will be travelling around the world with my wife Hanna for at least the next year. We are hoping to be able to find a way to sustain our travels and share our experiences with everyone along the way. Greenside will always be such a special place to me. It is a school where I have met so many wonderful student and their families, and made life-long friends with the staff – what more could I ask for! There are not many schools like Greenside with such amazing things always happening. It is a caring place that truly values everyone and embraces difference. I feel very lucky to have been able to work there and call it my school for the last few years. I am very proud of all the things we were able to achieve in my time there. But like all good things, they must come to an end at some point. I will never forget Ms. Bastick-Styles’ love for penguins, Ms. Webber’s never-ending pursuit for great lunches at Greenside, Ms. Tossell’s huge whole school projects or Mr. Yeats’ brilliant moonwalk impression! It is all the little things that I will remember about Greenside forever. I thank everyone for letting me be part of the special place that is Greenside. And, until we meet again I wish everyone every success in the world and look forward to walking through the doors to Greenside once again in the future. All the best Zach Groves 14. E-Safety Workshop Mr. Yeats: “Thank you to all those parents/carers who attended the e-safety workshop. It was great to have such productive discussions about how to keep our students e-safe both in school and out. As requested, a couple of the slides from the presentation are included here in the Newsletter along with a 'leaflet' of some of the points that came to the fore during the workshop. May I make another reminder to all parents/carers to ensure that they have read and signed the AUPs (acceptable Usage Policy) for both your daughter/ son and yourself. If you need another copy, please see your class teacher. In such a technological world we cannot avoid online activity completely, so a combined effort to ensure our students are educated on the potential risks and understand how to react appropriately is really important. If you have any e-safety questions or concerns, please do contact me”. 15. The Special Features of Specialisms! We are really pleased to share with you all of the exciting learning that is taking place during our Specialism sessions on Friday morning here at Greenside. These sessions allow our students to explore different aspects of the curriculum in diverse and challenging ways whilst developing their world ready skills. Over the six half terms our students will access different specialism groups of their own choice as well as having the opportunity to take part in community service work. We know that this is a unique Greenside experience that both our students and staff look forward to each week. Dance Lives at Greenside From Kate Scott: “Dance Specialism this term is focusing on dance on TV & film. The group is working on producing and choreographing a Greenside version of the very popular dance show ‘The Next Step’ . Prepare for a dance ‘battle’ between the Contemporary & Hip Hop dancers and a Studio shake down! We are learning lots as we dance to the top!” Elgin Artists From Ms. Simpson: “The Elgin artists have been creating masterpieces along the theme of 'Calm after the Storm' and have taken influences from the French artist Matisse. Not only have the students created their own 'port-hole' frames for their artwork based on his latter work, they have applied techniques in collage and oil pastel seen in the artists earlier work. Last week we turned Elgin into a desert island paradise with our tropical fruit still life drawing. Several residents have provided us with their pieces of work for our Summer gallery already!” First aid – May save the day! Ms. Hughes tells us: “In the first aid specialism, students are taught a variety of first aid skills, through vid-eo clips, quizzes, scenario cards and practical activities. These skills include; identifying hazards, how to contact the emergency services, dealing with bleeding, choking, burns and the unconscious person. The biggest focus is on them keeping themselves safe.

Page 6: Camera Sound Greenside Film Factory · 5/2/2015  · 7. Y6 Secondary Transfer A reminder to Parents/ carers that the deadline for Y6 Secondary applications - Pan-London is 31st October

Geography with a Difference! Ms. Williams tells us: “My specialism group have had a wonderful start to the school year embarking on a journey around the seven continents. As a student, Geography was definitely my least favourite subject so I decided to make my specialism different from your average Geography lesson. Each week we explore one continent and research a particular country within it. Students then use their Information Literacy skills to complete a fact file. We then create a piece of art inspired by an artist from that area before experiencing a traditional dish food tasting session. So far we have 'visited ' Mexico and looked at the works of Freda Kahlo and tasted rice and beans with tortilla. Brazil when students created a collage of a Favela and drank Brazilian Lemonade and Spain where we recreated Picasso style portraits before polishing off huge Tortilla de Patatas. All of our fun, interesting and inspirational learning takes place while listening to music from the chosen country. We are all looking forward to the next stage of our journey when we will be visiting China, Australia and the continent of Africa.

Music – I think we are going to be Friends! From Ms. Medcalf: “Wonderful music can be heard coming from the Y6 classroom as you walk down the corridor every Friday morning. We have had a fantastic start to the year in our music specialism. We have had a blast exploring rhythm in drumming and are working hard to learn new chords on the ukulele”. VIPs - Very Important People (in history) Ms. Allen & Mr. Shiner tells us: “We are encouraging our students to become historical detectives! We have chosen the following six historical figures for students to scrutinize: Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, CS Lewis, Rosa Parks, Samuel Pepys, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. We want our students to ask the BIG questions about these people. WHO were they? HOW would we describe their character? WHAT defined the era that they lived in? WHY are they still famous, infamous or significant? WHAT can we learn about them and the way that they lived their lives? We are encouraging our students to use many of their world ready skills. So far our students have; devised questions to ask Tanni Grey-Thompson for a mock interview. Listened to excerpts being dramatically read from a chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (and sampled Turkish Delight!). Accepted a ticket to ride on a bus and then considered why Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. On Friday our students will write a diary entry about a significant event that happened to Samuel Pepys. Our students have responded with enthusiasm to such a varied selection of historical figures and we have certainly enjoyed teaching them!” We Walk for Water From Mr. Johnson: “After much planning we are ready to start raising money for our We Walk for Water project. Each day in Tanzania many people walk upwards of 11 miles to collect and carry water from wells back to their homes. We intend to carry out our own sponsored Walk for Water in the last week of this half term where we will walk around our playground (9 times round makes a mile) to raise money for Water aid global to help fund wells in Tanzania. Anyone interested can get involved during lunch times during week beginning 17th October.

17. Mayor’s Christmas Card We have had a letter this week requesting entries from students of Primary School age to design the Mayor’s Christmas card as part of a competition. Entries should be on A4 paper with your name and Greenside on the back of the design (written in pencil only). This is all the information we have been given. The deadline to give these designs to KBS is Thursday 20th October. We will then post them from Greenside. 18. Two Requests to Families 1) If you have any spare plastic bags that we can put wet clothes in to – Ms. Buchanan and Nursery would be most grateful! 2) Ms. Tossell is planning a whole school art project for Autumn 2 that requires LOTS of CDs and an abundance of wool! GREENSIDE PARENTS

Some ideas to help your

children stay safe online.

Allowing your children to

use social media doesn’t

have to be a problem. We

just need to make sure they

are safe when doing so!

For example: A child must

be 13 to have a Facebook

page! But, you could set

part of it.

Do not be scared to ask

your children who they are

friends with and what they

are saying.

Social Media

Be Part of Their

Digital Life!

Talk to your child about

what they’re up to

online. You’ll know if it’s

appropriate or not!

Encourage your child to

go online and explore

appropriate sites.

Set boundaries in the

online world, just as

you would in the real

world.
