It’s not every day that you get to meet one of Australia’s most infamous authors and illustrators and try to convince him to include your newly created character in one of his books, but that is exactly what Year 3/4 students did when they were guests at this year’s Melbourne Writer’s Festival.

Teachers Leanne Coates and Leah Sinnott have been working in conjunction with the Digital Learning Team from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to develop and showcase Animalia resources that were developed in the Ultranet and then explored ways to use the book and TV program to engage students in the writing process.

From the Principal’s Desk…

This has been a very busy and rewarding fortnight for the

Camperdown College community, with a wide range of

exciting activities taking place here at school and further

afield. I have had much cause in recent weeks to feel very

proud of the efforts and achievements of our wonderful

students, staff and families.

The Senior Campus Open Night last Wednesday gave our

students and staff an opportunity to showcase the College's

secondary programs and record of successes. I would like

to extend my sincere thanks to our many student volunteers

who gave eagerly of their time and talents to inform and

enthuse our guests. Our school data tells a very positive

story but our students’ pride and connectedness to their

school tells an even more compelling story of personal

success. Thankyou also to our teachers and Education

Support Staff, Parents & Friends and School Councillors,

for your contribution to the Open Night. Our 2013 Year 7

students will enjoy a range of follow up transition activities

in Term 4.

Another terrific school community event was the Father's

Day Breakfast that was held last Friday at the Brooke Street

Campus. Once again, the new Brooke Street Learning

Centre & Library provided a very spacious and comfortable

venue for this type of event. Our tireless team of Parents &

Friends, assisted by Warren Attrill on the barbeque,

prepared egg and bacon rolls for a large turn out of

students, fathers, grandfathers and other family members

and friends. The College is very fortunate to have such a

dedicated and creative team of parent helpers and we are

very appreciative of the many and varied contributions that

they make to the College.

A range of camps, excursions and special activities have

taken place over the past week. We have had VCE Outdoor

Education students take on the ski slopes of Mount Bogong,

pushing themselves to their limits and earning the praise of

teacher Mrs Suzanne Maskell for their resilience and

fortitude under pressure. At the other end of the age

spectrum, but just as fearless, our infant students (and

parents!) relished the opportunity to dress up as their

favourite fairy tale character last Wednesday, brightening

up the classrooms and school yard with creative and

colourful costumes.

Our Year 3/4 students and staff were VIP guests at the

Melbourne Writer's Festival also last Wednesday, sharing

the limelight with Animalia author Graeme Base as they

showcased their trailblazing Ultranet work. The learning

experiences of Camperdown College students and teachers

Leanne Coates and Leah Sinnott now feature in a film

compiled by the DEECD digital learning resource team,

which will serve as a resource for other schools.

Congratulations to all involved – the project has been a

great success and our students did themselves and their

school very proud.

Our Year 5/6 students have been to Sovereign Hill for this

year’s camp and I have heard many positive reports – not

only of the experience but also of our students’ conduct.

While we recognise the many fine qualities and strong

behavioural track record of our students, we wonder

whether the added incentive of the Sir's cane might have

been a factor.

Meanwhile, in and out of classrooms throughout the

College, teaching and learning continues and the term is

fast drawing to a close. Let's celebrate our many and varied

achievements, hang on to the memories of the experiences

that have added to the rich tapestry of school life and turn

our minds and energies to the next round of challenges and

opportunities!

National History Challenge – School Level Interviews:

Congratulations to Ethan Coates, Tom Gough and Lauren McIlveen who have all progressed through to the National History

Challenge State Finals to be held on Sunday at Melbourne Boys Grammar School. We wish them all the best at this level!

Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies:

Year 12 Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies students spent last week at Mount Bogong. They learnt to cross country ski at

Falls Creek and then proceeded to go on an expedition out into the wilderness and camp overnight. They built a kitchen area out of

snow and took their water from an aqueduct. In the morning, the students’ tents were covered in about ten centimetres of snow but

they did manage to get a little sleep and stay warm overnight. The students spent the last day downhill skiing and managed this much

easier than the cross country skiing. The students all arrived back at school on Monday exhilarated about their experiences and full of

praise for Mrs Maskell’s efforts and dedication, who drove over one thousand kilometres to give them this experience.

Year 5/6 Sovereign Hill Camp:

The Year 5/6 students had two wonderful days with Sir at St Alypius’ Diggings School and Sir at The Ragged School at Sovereign

Hill last week. The camp was made so successful and enjoyable due to the excellent behaviour and positive attitude shown by all of

the campers. Ballarat even turned on some sunny weather for the two day residential school experience which was a bonus.

Australian Teenage Expo:

Year 9 students visited the Melbourne Showgrounds last week for the Australian Teenage Expo. The students joined other students

from around the State to watch presentations on cyber bullying and safe internet usage. The afternoon was spent touring the expo

where they were able to participate in activities, explore potential careers and gather free items on offer.

Senior Campus Open Night:

Our Senior Campus Open Night was conducted last Wednesday evening. College Captain Kelsey O’Neil opened the evening

welcoming guests and outlining the opportunities that she has had during her secondary schooling. Principal Ms Cherie Kilpatrick

then spoke about the many facets of education at Camperdown College:

• Student support services available for academic and welfare support,

• Attitude to Schools Data (our Year 7 students rating in the top quarter of the State in a number of key areas),

• Pathways offered,

• Academic outcomes and the fact that The Age’s Your School’s VCE Performance lift out reports the Camperdown College

median VCE study score as 30, with 5.6% of study scores of 40 or more. This is the strongest result for all schools,

government and independent, in the Corangamite Shire and only two schools in the greater south west achieved higher

results than Camperdown College last year,

• The value adding that occurs in Literacy and Numeracy between Years 7 and 9 as represented by our NAPLAN data.

The corridor was filled with displays and interactive activities. Our students absolutely shone on the evening and were outstanding

Camps and Excursions:

It has been a very busy couple of weeks at Brooke Street with a number of camps and excursions taking place. Last Monday and

Tuesday, our Year 5/6 students attended camp at Sovereign Hill and from all reports, all students had a fantastic time experiencing life

in the goldfields during the 1850’s.

Last Wednesday, students in Year 3/4 took part in an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Writer’s Festival at Federation Square. As

well as having the opportunity to meet author and illustrator Graeme Base, the students were fortunate enough to be treated to a visit

to the Eureka Skydeck. I was fortunate to be able to attend this excursion and must commend all students for their excellent behaviour

throughout the day.

Next Monday and Tuesday, our Year 3/4 students will be off on camp to Kangaroobie and we hope that everyone has a fantastic time

and look forward to seeing lots of great photos!

Father’s Day Breakfast:

Last Friday, our wonderful Parents & Friends Association organised a special Father’s Day Breakfast at the Brooke Street Campus.

This event was well attended and enjoyed by many of our fathers/special people and their children. A huge thankyou to everyone who

helped to make this morning such a success!

Brooke Street Concert:

With the end of term now just over two weeks away, it’s not long until our Brooke Street Concert. The concert will take place in the

Wilson Street Hall, beginning at 7pm, on Thursday 20th

September. Students and staff have been working hard to prepare their concert

items and look forward to sharing them with you on the night.

Footy Colours Day:

On the final day of Term 3, we are hosting a Footy Colours Day for all students in Prep – Year 6 at the Brooke Street Campus.

Students are invited to dress up in their footy colours, in return for a gold coin donation. All money raised on this day will be put

towards the purchase of additional items of sports uniform that will be used by our students when participating in interschool sporting

events. We look forward to a sea of colour!

There was a display of colour and much excitement at the Brooke

Street Campus last Wednesday when students in Prep D and

Prep/1N dressed up as their favourite fairy tale character. This

fairy tale extravaganza was a fantastic way to celebrate the unit of

work that they have just completed on fairy tales.

Students participated in eight special activities throughout the day

that included, sewing bears; making piggy pancakes and chocolate

crackles and constructing towers. Students worked in groups on a

rotational basis and had a fantastic day! Thankyou very much to

our parent helpers, Sam Tobias and Claire Kempton and student

teacher, Ashleigh Hunger for all of your help – it was very much

appreciated.

BBooookk WWeeeekk Book Week is always a great time for students to explore reading, both

for pleasure and fun!

This year, students at Brooke Street had opportunities to explore the

shortlisted and winning books during their weekly library visits, whilst at

Wilson Street, students were set various challenges based on this year's

Readers are Winners theme that had an Olympic twist. Teams raced each

other in the Off the Top of my Head – Book Balance Relay, Reading Relay

and Phrase it this Way challenges that were followed by the creative

challenges that saw students produce some amazing hats, posters and plays.

Teams were neck and neck in their efforts, but by a very close margin, the

winning team was Aleisha Scoleri, Tom Bennett and Louie Fagan. It was

great to see the students not only having a good time, but really enjoying

exploring the books and reading as well.

hamper raffle that is run in conjunction with the Brooke Street Concert. Could each

family please donate something small by Friday 14th

September.

We would also appreciate if each family could sell one book of raffle tickets that were

sent home with students last week. The raffle will be drawn at the Brooke Street

Concert on Thursday 20th

September.

BBRRIICCKKss TTrraaiinniinngg DDaayy On Tuesday 21

st August, the Year 9 BRICKs leaders (pictured left) attended a Leadership Skills

and Team Work Training Day at the Killara Centre in Camperdown. Through a variety of team

exercises and group work, students explored their personal visions for how they see themselves

as leaders and also what kind of leader they are aspiring to be.

Students were educated about the impact of their personality, judgements and values and how

they contribute to their team’s effectiveness. The BRICKs leaders are to be congratulated on

their enthusiastic participation on the day and their exceptional behaviour. Well done!

WWoommeenn’’ss WWoorrkk iiss NNeevveerr DDoonnee The Year 11 Food Technology students recently had the opportunity to visit Sovereign Hill

in Ballarat to enhance their learning in the area of technological developments in household

tools and equipment. The girls participated in an organised activity titled Women’s Work Is

Never Done which required them to dress in period costume whilst undertaking various

activities from this era whilst the boys participated in a program titled Men Toil Under the

Sun where they also dressed in period costume and experienced the working trades and

undertook research on the designs of the kitchens in the various houses.

YYeeaarr 33//44 MMeellbboouurrnnee WWrriitteerr’’ss FFeessttiivvaall EExxccuurrssiioonn Following a visit from the Digital Learning Team, students were challenged to create a character that could possibly join the current

cast of Animalia. From here, students began a learning journey that involved ICT tasks and the use of the Ultranet to design and create

puppets of their new characters.

During the session with Graeme Base, students were given the

opportunity to display their puppets to more than three

hundred other students and teachers from schools throughout

Victoria. At the end of the session, Graeme was presented with

a copy of two films, one reflecting the students’ learning

journey and the other was a visual display of the work that

they had completed. As well as seeing their work displayed on

the big screen at Federation Square and BMW Edge in

Melbourne, students also posed for publicity photos at the

Eureka Skydeck (pictured right).

VViiccttoorriiaann SScchhoooollss RRooaadd CCyycclliinngg CChhaammppiioonnsshhiippss On Wednesday 29

th August, Camperdown College was represented at the Victorian Schools Road

Cycling Championships by Year 3 student Bailey McDonald (pictured right), who rode in the Under

13 racing category. Bailey road a course of approximately 7 kilometres through the Wangoom area

on the outskirts of Warrnambool, racing against other talented riders from the south west. Bailey

rode strongly throughout the race, positioning himself within the leading group of riders as they

made their way throughout the course. His cycling talent and speed was evident on the day, with

Bailey finishing first in his category. Bailey was presented with a medallion and jersey for his

fantastic achievements in a presentation that was held after his race. Bailey has done a remarkable

job, considering that he is just 9 years old and has been awarded the South West Under 13

Champion. This achievement has progressed Bailey on to the State Road Cycling Final in Geelong

at the Belmont Criterium Track on Friday 19th

October.

We congratulate Bailey on this wonderful effort which we are all very proud of and wish him all the

best in his future racing! Well done Bailey!

Camperdown College was represented at the Victorian Golf Regional Championships by Year 5 student

Tom Cole (pictured right) on Friday 31st August in Warrnambool. Tom qualified for this Regional event

due to the excellent skills that he demonstrated at the district golf final back in June. Tom completed nine

holes of golf against other talented primary aged students within the region and finished 16th

out of the

pool of competitors, which is a fantastic achievement! Tom’s final score was 61, with a par on one hole

being a highlight of Tom’s game.

Well done Tom on reaching this level and on your achievements on the day!

RRUU OOKK?? DDaayy

The BRICKs leaders will be hosting an event at the Wilson Street Campus for RU OK? Day next Thursday 13th

September. The aim of

this day is for everybody to ask family, friends and colleagues Are you OK? Staying connected with others is crucial to our general

health and wellbeing. Feelings of isolation and being alone are major contributing factors to depression and social issues that can

ultimately result in suicide.

The BRICKs students will be holding a mural signing for all students in Year 7 – 12 during lunchtime. All students will be encouraged

to participate in this activity which will ask Who would you turn to if you needed help? There will be prizes for those who participate!

Regular, meaningful conversations can protect those we know and love, so on this day, please join us by asking those around you, RU

OK?

Thankyou to the Camperdown College community… On behalf of the staff and students at Camperdown College, we would like to sincerely thank the

local community for all of their hard work collecting stickers for this year’s Woolworths Earn &

Learn program.

All of the sheets were counted last week and we were very proud to announce that we collected

2,707 completed Earn & Learn sticker sheets, which is a fantastic effort!

The Parents & Friends Association held yet another

successful Father’s Day Breakfast last Friday 31st August.

It was hailed a huge success with lots of Dads/special

people enjoying bacon and eggs with their children.

Many Dads started work late, just to be able to enjoy this

celebration. A huge thankyou must go to the Parents &

Friends volunteers who worked hard to coordinate this

event and to the Mums and staff members who volunteered

their time during the morning. Josh and Chloe Lenehan enjoyed sharing breakfast with their little brother Jesse, Dad

Ken and Grandfathers Doug Robertson and Tom Lenehan.
