From the Principal’s Desk…

Congratulations to our thirty-four senior

students who participated in Friday night’s

Debutante Ball. It was an absolute

pleasure to be in the audience and enjoy

this showcase of our students’ talents on

the dance floor. It was terrific to see lots

of smiles as nerves gave way to

excitement over the course of the evening.

Thank you to our wonderful Debutante Ball coordinator

and training supervisor Vicki Angus; to Christine Esh for

many hours of administrative support; to our highly skilled

dance trainers Lesley and Trevor Ellington; to our

decorating committee comprising Jodie Lucas, Lisa

McDonald, Joanne Conheady and Lisa Jones; and to the

many parent, staff and student helpers for the generous

contributions of time, labour, food, props, ideas and moral

support. We look forward to our next Debutante Ball in

2017, providing an opportunity for our current Year 8 and 9

students to star on the dance floor!

This week marks the beginning of

Spring and we have introduced

changed sun smart practices to better

protect students, staff and visitors. The

SunSmart app is checked daily and when the UV rating is 3

or above, students and staff are notified that sun protection

must be considered. At the Junior Campus, all students are

required to wear their school hats outside on these days. At

the Senior Campus, students are encouraged to wear a hat

outdoors. This can be a hat brought from home (not a cap) or

a navy bucket hat ($10) or broad brimmed hat ($9) available

at the Senior Campus Office. Staff are wearing hats outdoors

on UV3+ days to model sun smart behaviour and remind

students of the need to wear sun protection. Sunscreen is also

strongly recommended on these days. Whilst the school has

sunscreen available for use, students are encouraged to have

their own on hand to regularly apply.

The changed expectations in relation to hats have been

incorporated into the newly ratified Uniform Policy and a

full Sun Smart Policy has recently been drafted by the

Policy Sub-committee of School Council. Please see the

Camperdown College Policies section on page 9 for further

details. Your feedback would be very welcome prior to this

policy being finalised.

Next year will see changes to the way the school canteen

is run, to ensure the longer term viability of this service. In

2016, the canteen will offer full service three days each

week (likely to be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and

students at both campuses will be able to purchase lunch

from the canteen on these days. On the other two days, the

canteen will only serve snacks to Senior Campus students

at recess and lunchtime; meals will not be available. This

reflects the school community’s current buying habits and

is a more sustainable model for the future.

We are considering other ways to complement the service

offered by the school canteen and if the success of the new

College Café elective is anything to go by, our students

will continue to be well catered for! On Thursdays, Senior

Campus students and staff are now able to purchase a

range of freshly cooked items prepared by the Year 9/10

elective class. Changed canteen service arrangements in

2016 may also open up opportunities for the SRC and JSC

to fundraise through special lunch days. If you have any

questions or suggestions relating to the school canteen

service next year, please make contact with me through

either campus office.

Where will you be on Saturday 12th

September? We are

spoilt for choice, with two fabulous events involving

Camperdown College students on offer for the public to

enjoy. Our Victorian State Schools Spectacular dance team

will be performing in Melbourne at Hisense Arena and the

great Camperdown College Mow Down is also happening,

here at the Frederick Street Sporting Complex. Both

events will be a spectator’s delight and I strongly

encourage you to set this date aside!

Interim Reports:

Interim Reports have been posted home. These reports provide valuable information to parents about how students

are progressing, behaving and coping with specific subject matter. Parents of students who have an Individual

Learning Plan in specific subjects will receive these plans and have the opportunity to discuss the goals that have

been set for the semester.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 9th

September from 3.30pm – 6.30pm in the AG Daws Hall and parents and

students are strongly encouraged to attend. Each student has a booking sheet and will need to book specific times,

keeping in mind that those parents who make an appointment have priority over those who do not have pre-booked appointments.

Debutante Ball:

An exquisite sewing room was the backdrop for the thirty-four students and flowergirl Stella Horspole and pageboy Lewis Regan who

were presented to the Corangamite Shire Councillor Ruth Gstrein and her husband Peter, College School Council President Mel

Micallef, Junior Campus Assistant Principal Clare Monk and dance trainers Lesley and Trevor Ellington at our Debutante Ball on

Friday evening. The students all looked resplendent in their outfits and carried themselves with poise. Many parents, extended family

members and friends watched on as the students performed a series of upbeat presentation dances such as the tango, merengue,

evening three step and jive. The students danced confidently and proudly. Chelsea Fox and Kim Gration introduced each student and

gave a précis of their achievements, thoughts and ambitions and read out the dress descriptions. There are many people who need to

be acknowledged for the hard work that they put into making this event such a special and memorable occasion so I have included

below a copy of the parts of the speech that students Sarah Blackley and Callum McIlveen presented on the night:

The dances we have performed tonight are a reflection of the many tireless hours of work that all students have put in over the

past month and could not have been achieved without our fantastic dance instructors Mr Trevor and Mrs Lesley Ellington. The

progression they have helped us make from the first training until now has been remarkable and I think you will all agree that

we’ve put on a fine performance tonight.

Many thanks must also go to our flowergirl, Stella Horspole and page boy, Lewis Regan who have both presented themselves

exceptionally well.

We would also like to thank Ms Angus for the many hours of planning that has happened to ensure this evening has been a

success. With deb meetings always being the highlight of our weeks, keeping us up to date with the planning and other exciting

news she has done a great job.

Of course we would like to thank our parents for supporting us throughout the process from hair and makeup trials to trying on

multiple dresses and of course taking us to multiple trainings. Our parents have helped us with every request to which we are very

grateful for.

An event like this couldn’t come together without the help from all the people behind the scenes. To Jodie Lucas, Lisa McDonald,

Joanne Conheady and Lisa Jones on the decorating committee, you have done an outstanding job making the hall look absolutely

phenomenal. Thanks to the parents who have supplied supper and helped prepare it today and of course to our Parents & Friends

Association who will serve us tonight. Thanks also must go to Lisa McDonald for the organisation of our suits.

We must finally thank Christine Esh for the beautiful job she has done with the tickets and the programme that you all received.

Blood Bank:

Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying eight VCAL students to the Warrnambool Red Cross Blood Bank. As part of his

Personal Development program, Ben Blackley organised for students to donate blood. For some students, this was a new experience

and for others it was a return visit. The staff were very impressed with the generosity and maturity of the students.

Book Week:

This term, every time students have read a book they have been encouraged to fill out a leaf and pin it on a tree in the library. It was

lovely to see that this activity culminated in a fully adorned tree by the beginning of Book Week. To celebrate, Mrs Van Dijk

presented students with a surprise – scrumptious cupcakes.

Holiday Revision:

During the first week of the school holidays, a number of revision activities will be conducted for students studying Year 12 subjects.

A copy of the revision timetable will be distributed to students next week and be included in the next addition of the newsletter.

Attendance at these sessions is compulsory.

Breakfast Club:

Our Breakfast Club has been well received by the students at the Junior Campus and is becoming a very social

occasion for the children to have breakfast with many of their friends before going into school. Breakfast consists of

cereal with milk, fresh fruit, toast with a variety of toppings and juices. Breakfast Club is held every Friday morning

from 8.20am to 8.40am. All students are welcome.

(Due to the Father’s Day Breakfast tomorrow, Breakfast Club has been cancelled for this week.)

Year 5/6 Melbourne Camp:

Yesterday morning, our Year 5/6 students rose with the sun to make their way to the train station ready to enjoy the sites and

atmosphere of the city on their much anticipated Melbourne school camp. Mr Bennett and Mrs Coates have planned an exciting

itinerary, including a tour of the MCG and the National Sports Museum, a visit to Parliament House, an evening meal in Lygon Street,

some relaxation time with a swim at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and a visit to Queen Victoria Market. The students will

make their way home on Friday afternoon, with plenty to recount.

Hooptime:

Our Year 3/4 All Stars (pictured right) worked very hard in each of their games,

displaying great offence and defence. We scored several goals throughout the day

which was very exciting. All students greatly improved their skills and confidence

throughout the day and gave it their all in each game. A big thank you to Gavin

Boyle, one of our VCAL students, who came along and coached for the day. All

students were well behaved and enjoyed their time in Terang.

Book Week:

What another successful book character parade we had last Wednesday! Where’s

Wally, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Sponge Bob, Mary Poppins, Paddington Bear, Little

Red Riding Hood, Fancy Nancy, lots of superheroes and the list goes on…

Thank you to Barbara Purcell for organising the day and the students and parents for the effort you all put into the costumes. Book

Week has been a tradition in schools for decades as many parents will remember their own time dressing up for the event in their

youth. I hope that you have all taken the challenge to read with your children every day. It is such a special time and all children love

to be read to.

Pre Service Teacher:

This week we welcome April Meade, a first year Deakin student, to our College. April is working in our Prep room under the

guidance of Kim Clark.

Attendance:

The Department of Education promotes attendance vigorously with Everyday Counts. It

is an important message; we firmly believe every day (and every minute) counts.

Schooling is more than facts and figures; children that are late or miss school often feel

anxious regarding their learning and their friendships. Any student arriving after 8.50am

will be recorded as late in our system and must be checked in at the office prior to going

to class. In saying this, absence for illness is a normal part of schooling and children

should remain home when they are ill.

Sporting Schools Program:

Just a reminder that our Sporting Schools Program (After School Sports) concludes for Term 3 next Tuesday 8th

September. The

students have thoroughly enjoyed improving their basketball skills at the stadium this term and eagerly await the program in Term 4.

Father’s Day:

We hope to see many of our children enjoying breakfast tomorrow morning with their Dad/special person to celebrate Father’s Day.

Parents & Friends will put on a scrumptious meal consisting of bacon and egg sandwiches, cereal, juice, fruit, yoghurt and tea and

coffee for $3.00 per head. Breakfast will be served at the Junior Campus from 7.30am – 8.30am.

The annual Father’s Day Stall will be held at the Junior Campus tomorrow morning for students in Prep – Year 4. Please don’t forget

to send $3 with each of your children so that they are able to purchase a gift for their Dad/special person. I would like to thank our

Parents & Friends for their tireless effort in coordinating both the Father’s Day Breakfast and Stall.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our fathers, grandfathers and step fathers a relaxing day this Sunday. Put your

feet up, sit back, indulge yourself and enjoy your time with your loved ones. You are appreciated, not just on Father’s Day, but every

single day!

Australian Schools Triathlon Challenge:

Camperdown College is competing in the Australian Schools Triathlon Challenge in Warrnambool, at the

Lake Pertobe precinct at the Warrnambool Beach and Foreshore. This will be held on Friday 20th

November for Year 3 – 6 students. Please return the slip below so that I can finalise numbers. Please note:

the cost will be $20 per student and parents will need to arrange for their child’s bike to be in

Warrnambool for the event. For further information please contact Caroline Duynhoven or students can

register individually at stc.org.au.

Leadership at Marlo during Term 2 are conducting a

competition to guess the number of jelly beans in the

jar.

All proceeds will be used in their Community Learning Project

where they hope to make improvements to the toilets at the

Frederick Street Sporting Complex. These toilets are used by

students regularly during Sport sessions and Athletics Carnivals

and are seriously in need of a make-over.

DDeessiiggnn CCrreeaattiivviittyy TTeecchhnnoollooggyy NNeewwss On Monday morning, Magnum Welders in Cobden kindly donated a new MIG

welder to the Camperdown College DCT room! Magnum Welders have been on

board supporting the lawn mower build from very early on and we purchased one of

their Arc/TIG/Plasma machines at the beginning of the year to enhance the school

metal program and support the mower build. Lots of students have had the

opportunity to Arc and TIG weld this year thanks to our new machine and it hasn't

missed a beat. The models that the students have built so far have surpassed my

initial thoughts and just goes to show what having a variety of equipment on hand

can lead to. Throughout the year, Graeme and Helen at Magnum have kept an eye

on the VCAL mower progress via the Camperdown College Lawn Mower Racing

Team Facebook page.

It was a pleasant surprise when I dropped in on Monday and the guys had a MIG machine and

accessories ready to donate. A MIG welder will give middle school and older students the chance to

experience the exact machines used in the industry and it will allow the older students to fabricate larger

models more efficiently. The Magnum MIG will also allow me to construct new welding and storage

benches easily over the summer holidays. Once again a big thank you to Magnum Welders and if anyone

in the school community would like to have a look at the new equipment, please contact me.

Junior Campus Working Bee Thank you to our hard working volunteers (Jane, Lachie and Nick Bennett; David, Claire, Ruby and Pippa Kempton; Lesa,

Trevor and Alan Best; Jacinta, Simon, Finn, Fletcher and Sam Tolland; Jodie and Ben McKenzie; Chris and Patrick

Spokes; Michelle and Lillian Teal; and Russell Moyle) who did an excellent job on Saturday 22nd

August improving the

McKinnon Street end of the Junior Campus yard.

The old outdoor stage had served the school well and provided many hours of

enjoyment for students, but time and the elements had taken their toll and the stage has

now been removed. The amphitheatre seating built into the slope will remain and the

ground will be flattened out and made suitable for play. An old fence at the rear of the

campus was also removed, opening up the area considerably. A major undertaking at

the working bee (and in the weeks before and since) has been the transformation of the

old portable classroom site into a tiered orchard. Most of the trees have now been

planted and we look forward to watching them grow. More working bees are planned to

further develop the Junior Campus yard and we hope these will also be well supported.

Breakfast Club The Breakfast Club has been running at the Senior

Campus on Thursday mornings and at the Junior

Campus on Friday mornings from 8.20am. We have

lots of breakfast options available, including juice,

toast, crumpets, muffins, fruit and lots of cereal.

By having breakfast before the school day, students

are able to have better concentration, attention, mood

and lots more energy to learn!

Hop into the frog pond… Last week, the Prep students were learning how to write an

Information Report. We chose to write about frogs.

After we explored some frog facts, we wrote about them and then

made a frog in the pond to finish off the lesson. We had lots of fun and

we now know a lot of interesting information about frogs.

Six Year 5/6 students travelled to Melbourne on Saturday 22nd

August to participate in an Immersion Day at the Indonesian

Consulate General. Poutu Emery, Cain Hope, Cynan Ellerton, Jack Kempton, Pennylayne Norris and Marissa Ingham were

accompanied by Kellie Kempton and Bu Jenna and everyone enjoyed a day filled with language and cultural workshops. Students

were also very happy to work in small groups with their kakak (older siblings), who were Indonesian students studying at various

Melbourne universities.

The morning was spent playing Indonesian trivia and participating

in small group speaking activities. After some delicious Indonesian

snacks for recess, students played Sepak Bola Sarung (soccer

wearing sarongs) and Balap Kelereng (marble and spoon races).

Students showcased their performing arts skills next, retelling a

famous fable in Indonesian and acting out each scene. Lunch

consisted of Indonesian style KFC with yellow rice and noodles.

Finally, the afternoon workshops were Twister and Uno played in Indonesian, learning a traditional West-Javanese dance and mask

making. All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the Year 5 students are looking forward to going again next year! A big

thank you must go to Kellie Kempton for driving and accompanying the group for the day.

February 2016 in Noorat Our 2016 event is to be held at Noorat in

February 2016. We have an

information/registration night at 6pm at the

Noorat Recreation Reserve on 19th

October. All

registrations online will be $20, however paper

registrations will be $25. If you need assistance,

please ring Trish on 0434 926 732. A Team

Captain meeting will be held later in the year and

again just before the event. This is our 6th

event

around the Corangamite Shire and we hope to

have a great turn out of participants for this

worthwhile cause. If you think you can help the

Committee with ideas or assistance please

contact Trish. Looking forward to your support.

Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation): If you have a child in Year 2 that would like to

complete their Sacrament of Reconciliation,

please contact Mel Fox at St Patrick’s Primary

School on 5593 1962. For your child to be

accepted into the program, they must have been

baptised and the enrolment form must be

completed with the payment of $20. The cost

includes the text/work book, a candle, an

information booklet and the transfer for their

stole.

Little Athletics is back again for 2015-16 for all girls and boys aged 5 to 16 years.

The registration pack collection and Come & Try Night is on Friday 9th October at 4pm.

The competition commences on Friday 16th October at 4.20pm.
