We must know our history or the lack thereof will surely destroy us.

G race and peace unto you.

We celebrate this month by acknowledging the great achievements of black men and women throughout American history. These achievements, largely left out of American history books, became major contributions to society, the church, and our culture.

Beloved, it was not so long ago when there were countless obstructions in the pathway of success in the lives of black men and women. Now with the passage of time, blacks continue to make history with the constant recognition of their contributions to society, and the strides in every field of work and education.

With early beginnings in 1926, black historian Carter G. Woodson initiated the "Negro History Week" as a way to spread the news of the many accomplishments by black Americans. The week, held in February in reference to Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays, brought forth the importance of unity, inspiration, and awareness within black communities. As the celebrated week continued to blossom, it was changed to a month-long national observance in 1976.

Additionally, as significant accomplishments of Black History icons such as Marcus Garvey, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, W.E.B. DuBois, Charles Drew, Benjamin Banneker, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, and Mary McLeod Bethune were noted, their overall contributions continue to impact and shape the path of history's timeline.

    Canaans Core Values

    Congregational Intimacy

    (1 Corinthians 13:13)

    Salvation For The Lost

    (St. John 3:16)

    Applied Christianity

    (James 2:14-20)

    Impact the Human Condition

    (St. Luke 4:18-19)

Thank you for worshipping with us at Canaan Baptist Church. The corporate life of this congregation is the true witness of the vitality of our faith. While the high point of our Christian service is to be found in the experience of Sunday worship, what we do from Monday to Saturday, speaks volumes about Canaans commitment and dedication to Christ and our community.

Canaan is a family where all of us are saved sinners hammering out our salvation under the auspices of Gods amazing grace. We are structured, but not so structured as to prevent the powerful work of the Holy Spirit to impact the life of our in-reach and outreach ministries. We are organized, but not so organized to prevent the organism, which is the Church, from bearing full life.

    We Welcome You!

Dr. Christopher Alan Bullock and First Lady Dr. Debbie Bullock

    and the Canaan Baptist Family

The Good News of Canaan is a monthly publication created to inform and encourage Canaan friends and family. Material must be submitted before the 15th of the month preceding each issue.

As the first month of the New Year ends and the next begins many of us have been hard at work on our New Years resolutions. While often these resolutions involve

going to church more, losing a few pounds, or even beginning a new lifestyle, often they do not include improving upon the lives of others. However, in its mission to impact the human condition, Canaans Benevolence Ministry has worked endlessly to ensure that the members of Canaan as well as the members of Canaans community are cared for. Led by Deacon Dwight Holden, the Benevolence Ministry embodies the term through its actions both inside and outside of the church. The word says in 2 Corinthians 9: 7-8: So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. It is with their actions that the Benevolence Ministry shows the love of God and impacts the human condition as they care for people when they find that some material needs are hard to come by. So instead of maintaining a resolution that is focused only on self-improvement, let us as members of Canaan make a joint resolution, a commitment, to continue our mission as a church which is to impact the human condition; and, to do so without regard for ourselves but with the

    love of God.

    Ministry Spotlight

Our History - Our Legacy - continued from page 1 Saints, our culture has been richly blessed with influential black inventors, scientists, activists, politicians, church leaders, authors, lawyers, artists, athletes, comedians, and entertainers. We have the appointed potential to succeed in every aspect of our God given life and still have a role in history. It's an honor to be benefactors of the many contributions to society by black Americans that have revolutionized the history of the world.

In closing, our presence in history must continue its designated course. With faith, we should utilize every observance of Black History Month to our advantage. We must remember and learn of our past and future endeavors because our history is our legacy. It is through us that our children and our children's children continue the celebratory tradition with utmost importance, pride, and recognition. Do not let February be the only month to remember our history. It should be a part of our every day - all year!

" As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison." - Nelson Mandela Father of South Africa's democracy, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 5, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa. As the country mourned for 10 days, Mandela was finally laid to rest in his home village of Qunu, South Africa. He was 95 years old. It was through Mandela that the world cast its eyes on South Africa and took notice of the severe and organized repression of black South Africans. Yet, it was also through Mandela that the world would learn the spirit of endurance, the triumph of forgiveness and the beauty of reconciliation. In his early years, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC). Much of the years that followed saw Mandela deeply involved in activism to free his country from racial division. Even though, he served a total of 27 years in prison for his conviction to fight apartheid and its injustices, Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy. After his release in 1990, Mandela was elected President of the ANC. Later, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, along with FW de Klerk, on behalf of all South Africans. As the end of apartheid formally came to an end in April,1994, Mandela voted for the first time in his life along with his people. On May 10, 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as President of a democratic South Africa. Mandela worked tirelessly in his journey to continue improving lives in his country. His life story has been an "inspiration to the oppressed and those who were opposed to oppression." Mandela is survived by his wife, Graca, three daughters, 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

    Psalm 118

~ Psalm 118 is the middle chapter of the entire Bible. ~ Psalm 117, before Psalm 118 is the shortest chapter in the Bible. ~ Psalm 119, after Psalm 118 is the longest chapter in the Bible. ~ The Bible has 594 chapters before Psalm118 and 594 chapters after Psalm 118. ~ If you add up all the chapters except Psalm 118, you get a total of 1188 chapters. ~ 1188 or Psalm 118 verse 8 is the middle verse of the entire Bible. ~ And what is the message found in verse 8? "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man." - Psalm 118:8 ESV
