Canaan’s Mission Statement An urban Baptist Church which serves as a vanguard of liberation, faith and empowerment through our

Christian witness. Canaan’s mission is to do ministry for the Master through the five-fold ministries of Discipleship,

Fellowship, Service, Worship and Evangelism. Acts 2:42-47

Canaan’s Core Values Congregational Intimacy (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Salvation For The Lost (St. John 3:16)

Applied Christianity (James 2:14-20)

Impact the Human Condition (St. Luke 4:18-19)

Thank you for worshipping with us at Canaan Bap st Church. The corporate life of this congrega on is the true witness of the vitality of our faith. While the high point of our Chris an service is to be found in the experience of Sunday worship, what we do from Monday to Saturday, speaks volumes about Canaan’s commitment and dedica on to Christ and our community.

Canaan is a “family” where all of us are saved sinners hammering out our salva on under the auspices of God’s amazing grace. We are structured, but not so structured as to prevent the powerful work of the Holy Spirit to impact the life of our in-reach and outreach ministries…. We are organized, but not so organized to prevent the organism, which is the Church, from bearing full life.

We Welcome You! Dr. Christopher Alan Bullock and First Lady Dr. Debbie Bullock

All churches take care in their appearance, and most often this occurs from the outside in. At Canaan the Flower Ministry led by Jane Baylor is in charge of ensuring that Canaan’s pulpit is always decorated with flower arrangements. This is no small task. When a pulpit is ready and decorated, it goes a long way towards ensuring that Canaan maintains a certain aesthetic appearance. Flowers decorating the pulpit range in color and in

type, most often they mirror the occasion. Most recently, the members of Canaan were able to see the traditional flowers of Easter on Resurrection Sunday. It is important as a church that we take pride in our appearance ensuring that our sanctuary models on the outside what we hope to accomplish on the inside, that is a sense of order and beauty. This beauty is also shared with the members of Canaan, as the flowers decorating the sanctuary are often distributed after service. The word says in Isaiah 40:8 “the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Though, the Flower Ministry ensures that the Flowers of Canaan are always beautiful, the ministry also helps Canaan’s members to keep in mind that the word of God is everlasting.

And, while outer beauty is important so is inner beauty, more specifically the inner beauty that comes from good health. “…After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” ( 1 Peter 5:10).

The Health / Nurses Ministry in Canaan is led by Sis. Betty Mitchell. This Ministry is one that looks after the physical health of Canaan’s members during services. They do all that they can to ensure that members are cared for, whether it be bringing water or offering support. Often times this ministry works behind the scenes. However, the work that they do for the congregation is greatly appreciated. The members of Canaan can rest assured that during service this ministry will take care of physical needs so that spiritual needs can be taken care

of. The ministries of Canaan are vast in number, but it is important to note ministries such as the Health Ministry, as it is a crucial part of the worship experience.

Now that spring has sprung, how about taking stock of those resolu ons you made back in January?

Though the New Year inspires good inten ons and plenty of determina on, it’s not uncommon for the bloom to be off the rose come March. Life and work intervene, willpower fades, and many of us end up right back where we started.

A couple of the most popular resolu ons, losing weight and making a commitment to fitness are all too o en sidelined when the season of resolve passes.

Now is the perfect me to dust off your resolu ons and renew your efforts to achieve the goals you were striving for.

With warmer weather and more a er-work daylight to enjoy, the season prac cally begs for outdoor ac vity. Bike rides, long walks, even gardening all burn calories, combat stress, and promote be er health.

It’s also a great me to lighten up at the dinner table. Winter’s heavy, hearty comfort foods can be traded in for fresher, healthier dishes like veggie-laden salads and grilled lean meats.

x Fill up on foods like vegetables, which keep you sa sfied without piling on calories. Try ea ng a low-calorie salad before a meal to help tame your appe te so you eat less overall.

x Eat hot cereal like oatmeal for breakfast. More filling and less caloric than dry cereal, high-fiber hot cereals are also good for your heart.

x Drink green tea, which is calorie-free and contains a substance that research shows may s mulate the body to burn calories.

x Curb cravings by giving in. One square of dark chocolate goes a long way toward sa sfying your sweet tooth, and its an oxidants can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

The Plan An exasperated mother, whose son was always getting into mischief, finally asked him, "How do you expect to get into Heaven?" The boy thought it over and said, "Well, I'll run in and out and in and out and keep slamming the door until St. Peter says, "For Heaven's sake, Jimmy, come in or stay out!"

Mothers Day The origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced to the UK where Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates– in the US on May 11th this year) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher.
