I designed this modelspecifically for the first

    official Origami CanadaConvention held in

Vancouver, BC. The Blue Jayis BCs provincial bird. The

main challenge was the whitestripe on the wings, so I used

a base where I had the rawcorner free to use for thiscolour-change. The tips of

the wings are also situated onthe edge of the square so theycan be colour-changed. The

shoulders of the wings areseparate flaps so they can be

shaped and also allow for thecolour changed ring around

the neck. The central grafthas three functions: adding

length to the tail, splitting thecentral flap to form two

individual legs, and addingmore paper in the head areato shape the detail.Shaping is required for a

    good result, especially thehead.

reaction when presenting yetanother penguin design to the

    abundant existing ones.

With this design I tried to bea bit more specific in the type

of penguin, namely theEmperor Penguin- the largest

of all the penguins. Althoughthe colours are the same as

for most other origamipenguins, the shape of

especially the large chest, head and the longer beak

    makes this variation sorecognisable.

    It is possible to obtain

different head positions withthis design, and so a whole

Emperor Penguin family canbe folded by applying only

slight variations to thefolding sequence. The legs

are also quite long for apenguin design, so the baby

penguin can thus be placed inthe fathers pouch.

    Most papers will work well,

but thicker papers that arewet-folded are best to give

    more volume to the finalresult.
