WELCOME BACK TO NORFOLK. PLEASE PRODUCE YOUR PASSPORT!

On behalf of the Annual Convention Committee and Ring 103, we would like to welcome you to the

International Brotherhood of Magicians’ Eighty-fourth Annual Convention.  This will be our third convention in Norfolk. We previously met here in 1984 and 1996. We hope you have your passport ready so you can enjoy all of our activities.

Our entire committee has worked very hard over the past year to bring you a variety of magical surprises.  Get on board and enjoy our opening night show with Andrew Goldenhersh. Watch Alexanderia the Great (Donna Purnell) take the Leap of Faith and attempt her sixth world record. Enjoy the Catch the Rising Star (all youth) show Wednesday night, continuing with our Stars of Asia Gala show, the I.B.M. Gold Medal Competition show on Friday, and ending with our closing night Stars of Magic show featuring the finest performers in magic.  Sprinkled in between these events will be the Close-up Show, the Six Pack Event, lectures, special events, contests, and even a little fireworks on the 4th of July.

While you are in Norfolk, get out and enjoy the many interesting sites and attractions. Following the convention, slip over to the beach or visit some of the historical sites in the adjacent areas.

We want to offer special thanks to Joan Caesar, Contest Mentor; Steven Kline, Stage Director; Dale Salwak, Stars of Asia gala show producer; and last but not least, our Host Ring 103.

Next year we hope to see you at the Hyatt Regency in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona. This location is situated in the heart of the downtown area, with plenty of eateries, the refurbished Orpheum Theater just a couple blocks away, and the nearby historical Wells Fargo Museum.

Len Vintus Gene Gordon Don Rogers Warner Dornfield W.W. Durbin

The International Brotherhood of Magicians had very humble beginnings. It started as a letter

writing exchange between three young men who shared a common interest, a love for the art of magic. M.J.G. Mc-Mullen of Canada, and Gordon Avery of Buffalo, New York began writing to each other about magic in 1922. A few months later a third young man joined in the correspondence campaign. His name was Ernest Schieldge. If those names sound unfamiliar to

you it is because they all changed their names and became known in order as Len Vintus, Gene Gordon, and Don Rogers. That trio became the nucleus of the

fledgling I.B.M. Len Vintus took the Presidency and he became I.B.M. Member No. 1; Gene Gordon was Publicity Director with I.B.M. No. 2. Don Rogers became Editor of The Linking Ring, the Brotherhood’s of-ficial journal, and he became I.B.M. Member No. 3. Werner Dornfield, better known to magicians as “Dorny,” became involved and was given I.B.M. Membership No. 4, though he claimed to be the first official member since the others were all officers!Membership grew rapidly. There was

a clamoring for the formation of more local groups they called “Rings.” Gene Gordon established the first Ring in Rochester, New York. Additional Rings sprang up as members sought to meet and exchange ideas and interests in magic. The objectives of the I.B.M. are

simple. To organize individuals inter-ested in the practice and promotion of the Art of Magic; to facilitate the exchange of magical ideas; and to pro-mote harmony among those interested in magic. The first fully elected Presi-dent was the legendary W.W. Durbin, who won the election during the first I.B.M. Convention that was held in Durbin’s backyard in Kenton, Ohio, in 1926. During that same Convention the In-

ternational Brotherhood of Magicians was incorporated and a Constitution and By-Laws were created. Since that time, regular elections are held each year and a business meeting is called to report on the state of the organization. Now ninety years after its birth, the

I.B.M. continues to forge ahead in bringing magicians together from around the world in the interest of advancing the ethics of magic, and to oppose exposures, to encourage lit-

erature, to promote professionalism in magic, and to promote humane treat-ment of live animals and birds used in our Art. Today, there are over 300 I.B.M Rings

worldwide, boasting nearly 11,000 members. Those who have served the I.B.M. for twenty-five years are given the “Order of Merlin” award, and there are additional levels of recognition for thirty-five, fifty, and sixty years of continuous membership. Some of our members have served for sixty and seventy years and continue to remain active. Dr. John Booth held the record as our longest-standing member, hav-ing been a member for over eighty-one years! Through the years, those mem-bers whose dedication to magic has led them to the highest office have made contributions of time and talent that are immeasurable. All have felt hon-ored and have continued to serve in various capacities. As we move forward, the I.B.M. faces

new technology and changes in atti-tudes but while we may have our ups and downs, the object and goals re-main the same.

It is still the grandest magic organization in the world.

Norfolk holds a special affinity to me, as it was the first I.B.M. Convention that I attended in the USA. This was in 1996, the year that I was President of The British Ring. I am very flattered this year to be taking on the job of International President and feel very humble in following my illustrious predecessors.

A quotation that I frequently use is to “have fun with magic,” which after all is what we are in it for, and I am certain that is just what we shall be doing in Norfolk.

Our congratulations must go to the organisers Mike Stratman and Bill Wells and their Committee who have had a difficult job due to the proximity of the FISM Convention in the U.K. Nonetheless they have come up trumps, and we are to enjoy several days of outstanding

magic. As a previous organiser of The British Ring Convention, I know only too well the enormous amount of work that is involved, and it is very much appreciated.

During the Convention my thoughts will be for members who through sickness or other adversity will be unable to be with us to enjoy the fun.

Carol and I shall look forward to meeting you all.

Time has gone so fast. A year ago I started my presidency of this great organization and it seems like yesterday. I have travelled in many countries and magic has been the passport to friendship among people from different cultures and social strata. The I.B.M. is promoting this, and I hope it will continue to do so for a long time to come. I would like to thank you for your trust and for coming to this convention.

Our annual event is the most important one in our magic calendar, and we have to do our best to keep it going. It is an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, to launch new talent and to keep legends alive in our memory. It gives us a chance to learn new material and to review the classics of magic. Above all, it is the time to have fun and explore new perspectives. For this, I would also like to heartily thank all those who have been involved directly and indirectly in the organization of this event and wish the best of prospects to the incoming International President, my friend of many years, John Pye.

How does Dr. Bill Spooner top off a terrific year?  How about being named the Special Guest of Honor at the 84th Annual Convention of the International Brotherhood of

Magicians? So far 2012 has been a banner year for him. In January the I.B.M. Board of Trustees voted

unanimously to approve his nomination for the I.B.M. Medallion of Honor – the highest award given by the world’s largest magic organization. Also in 2012, he published the first two issues of his pioneering electronic publication, Journal of Magic Research. Then in the June 2012 issue of The Linking Ring, Bill was featured on the cover with an eight-page article that included sixteen photos. A banner year, indeed!

Now he can add I.B.M. Convention Guest of Honor to his resumé.How did he arrive at this lofty position?  It all began in 1953 when he was sixteen years old.

He was shopping downtown in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, and noticed a magician performing. He introduced himself and subsequently gained a mentor and lifetime friend – Lislie Shackerford (LiShak the Magician). Lislie introduced Bill to the I.B.M. and became one of his sponsors along with William Cash  (DeCasho the Magician) of Durham. Next year he will be honored as a member of the Order of Merlin Excalibur in recognition of fifty years of continuous membership.

Bill has attended most I.B.M. Conventions since his first in 1954 in Louisville, Kentucky. He acknowledges that as one ages, the reasons people attend conventions changes. “Today I most enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new members,” he said. “Of course, serving as International President was one of the most memorable years for me.”

From the beginning he has enjoyed active involvement in the I.B.M. that includes Territorial Representative for North Carolina, Territorial Vice President, and for over thirty years, a member of the I.B.M. Board of Trustees. In 1980 he was elected to the Executive Committee. He served as International Vice President in 1983-84, International President-Elect in 1984-85, and International President in 1985-86. In 1993 he was made an Honorary Lifetime Member of the I.B.M. by the Board and by unanimous vote of the membership at the Annual Business Meeting.

Throughout his years of association with the I.B.M. Bill Spooner has also distinguished himself as a member of the Convention Committee, Membership Committee, Internet Committee, Long-Range Planning Committee, the Management Team, President’s Advisory Committee, Magic Collectors’ Advisory Committee, and Audit Committee. Since 1982 he has served as a trustee of the I.B.M. Endowment and Development Fund which has grown from a few thousand dollars to nearly $500,000.

Yes, it has been a very good year for the I.B.M. and Dr. William Spooner – and it is only July. We expect that he will find something more to do, and others will find more ways to recognize and honor one of our organization’s all-time Most Valuable Players.

DAVID ACER (Canada) is a Gemini award-nominated writer, comedian, and inventor of magic tricks. He has had his own special on The Comedy Network and has appeared on many international specials, including ten appearances at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. Younger audiences know him as “Doubting Dave” from Discovery Kids’ Mystery Hunters and for the publication of his spin-off book, Gotcha!: 18 Amazing Ways to Freak Out Your Friends, a Canadian bestseller. David is a world-class sleight-of-hand artist who has performed and lectured for magicians around the globe. In 2009, the Canadian Association of Magicians named him Magician of the Year. He has published four books of his original tricks, the latest, published in 2011, is called More Power to You.

ALEXANDERIA THE GREAT (USA). Donna Purnell, known as Alexanderia the Great, has been called “The Houdini Housewife.” From setting world records on national television, to performing one-of-a-kind death-defying escapes, you can count on Alexanderia the Great to do something extraordinary. As you witness her fighting to escape from chains, shackles, handcuffs, strait jackets, or rope in the bottom of a deep pool, or from her own Underwater Cell, you will understand why she is called the “Queen of Extreme.” She and her husband, Bill, live in Medway, Massachusetts with their children, Nicole, Kristin and Michael.

JOHN BANNON (USA) became interested in magic in the early 1970s when he was a high school student in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He soon joined I.B.M. Ring 103 and was influenced by an early mentor, Woody Landers. In the 1990s John’s first major books were published, Impossibilia and Smoke & Mirrors. His packet trick, Twisted Sisters (1993), continues to be one of the best-selling tricks of all time. John has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Today, John Bannon is an internationally-acclaimed creator of close-up

and card magic. His latest book, Dear Mr. Fantasy (2005), was called one of the best magic books of the decade. He has produced a series of “fractal” examinable packet tricks and two multi-DVD collections of his card magic, Bullets after Dark (2009) and Bullet Party (2011). In real life, John is a lawyer and deals with business and intellectual property litigation.

RICH BLOCH’s (USA) love of theatre and his position as magic consultant to the Folger Shakespeare Theater at the Library of Congress led Orson Welles to tap Rich as his writer for a television special, Time and Chance. Rich is an inventor of illusions with magicians all over the globe utilizing his techniques and apparatus, including David Copperfield, Siegfried and Roy, Harry Blackstone, Jr., and Doug Henning. Welles called Rich “an Edison of Magic.” But magic performing is never far from the center of Rich’s heart. He performs regularly as a featured guest at numerous Las Vegas venues.

ALEX BOYCE (USA), fifteen, of Endicott, New York, is an active member of Ring 79, has chaired two regional shows, and has been in magic for seven years. He has won numerous awards at Tannen’s Magic Camp and has also been on The Today Show. Alex also likes running, acting, singing, and biking. He has performed in more than thirty plays and musicals across the southern tier of New York.

CHRIS CAPEHART (USA) was born in New York and is a regular headliner at New York City’s famous “Monday Night Magic,” but he didn’t begin his interest in magic until the age of twenty. Chris was working as a mail clerk at a law firm in Harlem and, while on a delivery, discovered a circus tent with “Presto the Magician” performing. That’s all it took to begin a career in magic, which has now lasted over thirty-five years. In 1979, Chris started performing as a street magician in Manhattan. In 1981, he perfected his own Linking Rings act called “The Three Ring Routine.” His routine has been hailed as “the best of the best” by some of the world’s most

renowned magicians and led to his title as “The Ring Master.” He is a regular at Hollywood’s Magic Castle.

JULIANA CHEN (China) was born in the People’s Republic of China. At age ten she was selected for specialized training at the Hunan Academy for the Performing Arts. She started in ballet, and then added acrobatics and foot juggling. After injuring her leg, she turned to magic, in which she has excelled to world-class status. In 1986, she won the All-China Best Magician Competition. In 1987, she moved to Vancouver, Canada, to continue studying magic and English and later, in 2002, to Las Vegas. She has won numerous magic competitions, including the world title for Manipulation at The World Congress of Magicians and the I.B.M. Stage Competition in 1992. She has been featured on the cover of The Linking Ring. At the 2009 I.B.M. Convention in Nashville she was a featured performer along with her mentor, Shimada, who was the convention’s Honored Guest.

DANI DaORTIZ (Spain) combines superb technique with crazy humor. At only thirty years of age he is another of the great card workers that Spain has given the world. He was born in Malaga and began his own marathon of magic at four years of age, thanks to a box of tricks given to him by his father. When he was twelve, Dani visited the magic circle in Seville and experienced the magic of Mario the Magician, who would later become his mentor. His magic is sometimes characterized as unconventional and makes much use of improvisation, allowing him to create incredibly dynamic routines. Dani edits a magazine called ElManuscrito, which he hopes will create a lasting legacy of interesting articles, studies, theories, techniques, and tricks. He has authored four books on magic and edited three DVDs, including Fat Brothers I and II.

DAISY DOLICKER (USA), eight years old, is from Raleigh, North Carolina, and has been a performing member of Ring 199 since 2009. She was the Ring’s People’s Choice Gold Medal Winner in the Youth Division in 2010. In addition to performing at Ring meetings, Daisy also performs at school shows and Ring benefits. She is a rising fourth grader at Swift Creek Elementary School, is active in soccer and chorus, and has a Red Belt in Shorin-Ryu karate. She loves animals, raising a rescue cat and a Duck Roller Dog, and is an avid reader.

JUSTIN FLOM (USA) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1986. He grew up in a performing family (his father did magic and ventriloquism, his mother was the assistant, and his two brothers and sister were all in the act). He attended his first magic convention when he was two months old and performed his first magic trick at age two. After high school he toured with professional magicians, and then – at only eighteen – moved to Branson, Missouri, to headline at the Branson Mall Music Theatre. The next year, Justin turned an empty space above a restaurant into his own Magic Parlor and Imaginary Theatre, where he performed ten shows a week for five years. Since then he has toured twenty-four countries, headlined on cruise ships, and created his own trick, Card Artistry. While in Branson he met a beautiful girl from Arkansas, Jocelynn, and they married in 2009. The couple now lives in Las Vegas.

PAUL GERTNER (USA), from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, started his trade show performing career in 1975 and has performed for more than five hundred corporations in more than twenty different countries, has lectured at MIT, and has been featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal...twice. A three-time guest on The Tonight Show, in 1998 he wrote and starred in the critically-acclaimed one-man theatrical production Paul Gertner – Ten Fingers. This one-man show became the fastest selling play in City Theater’s history. Paul was a featured performer at the Presidential Inauguration of President George W. Bush. He is an author of one of the fastest selling books in magic history, Paul Gertner: Steel & Silver, which has recently been released on DVD in a four-volume set.

ANDREW GOLDENHERSH (USA), has mesmerized audiences from Hollywood to the Far East, and points in between. A perennial honoree at the Magic Castle, Andrew has received accolades from the prestigious Academy of Magical Arts, including the Academy’s “Parlour Magician of the Year” in 2009 and 2010. Andrew is the only magician to have been nominated for both Close-up Magician of the Year and Parlour Magician of the Year for twelve years in a row. David Copperfield has licensed and performs one of David’s signature routines.

Jordan Gomez

JORDAN GOMEZ (France) is a nineteen-year-old magician. At the age of twelve he was awarded the Championship of Magic in France and won the Belgian Grand Prix. At fourteen Jordan was awarded the Golden Mandrake. He turned professional at age seventeen in the World Championship of Magic (FISM) in Beijing in July 2009 – the youngest French magician to ever perform in it. Last year he was a guest speaker at the Essential Magic Conference.

HANNIBAL (USA) is a professional entertainer from Charlotte, North Carolina, who uses only his last name. He has over thirty-five years of performing experience, including stage, film, and television. He has successfully created and presented programs for many corporate clients. He brings a showman’s perspective to his work, from rethinking classics to original ideas. He has taken his magic from the street to a successful

fifteen-year run in restaurants and from there to corporate board rooms and banquet halls worldwide. Hannibal and Dawn, his wife of twenty-four years, live in Charlotte. They have four children: Carlaysle (23), Avalon Rose (21), Grace (18), and Braiden (16), along with two rescue dogs and two psychotic cats.

JONATHAN HAWLEY (Great Britain) is an illusionist who has performed around the world for the past nine years. He recently performed at the Blackpool magic convention and finished an extended run on Disney Cruise Lines in Europe. Jonathan is originally from England and now lives with his wife, Trisha, in her hometown in North Carolina. In addition to being an illusionist, Jonathan is an excellent close-up magician who loves card and coin magic.

WAYNE HOUCHIN (USA) grew up in a small town in northern California. In 1999 Houchin made headlines by escaping from a straitjacket at age sixteen while hanging fifty feet above an

intersection. A few critically acclaimed theatre shows later, he found himself on the front page again – this time for accurately predicting the exact outcome of the Super Bowl. Next, it was being blindfolded and

driving safely down Highway 99 in northern California. He worked with Criss Angel on his television show Mindfreak, co-founded the popular magic Web site theory11, and has headlined at the Magic Castle. As part of the Curiosidades team, in 2010 he stopped time in the Dominican Republic -- for the entire nation! One year later Houchin executed another headline-making event – an epic dual escape with his wife, Frania.

HOU KAI (China) was born in 1990 in the Henan province of China and started his strict training at the age of five at the Shaolin Temple. This training gave him a strong foundation to become an amazing acrobat in the years following. At the age of eight Hou Kai joined the China Acrobatic Troupe where he went through rigorous training. Within nine years he acquired acrobatic skills such as hoop diving, diablo, tumbling, juggling balls, juggling hat, Chinese pole, dancing, and martial arts. Hou Kai left the China Acrobatic Troupe in 2010 to pursue his career as a performer. Apart from China, he has also performed in the USA, Greece, Germany, Australia, and Hungary.

T.J. KETCHMARK (USA), fifteen, has been interested in magic since he was five and has been performing since he was eight. A sophomore at Riverside Brookfield High School in Riverside, Illinois, he has performed at senior centers, Boy Scout banquets, birthday parties, and village holiday celebrations. T.J. has won numerous awards, including first place at Abbott’s Magic Together (where he also was the People’s Choice winner), the Houdini Convention in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Michigan Magic Day, and his school’s talent show. He enjoys television production and improv club.

TYLER NYGREN (USA) grew up in Van Wert, Ohio, and has been creating and performing magic since the age of ten. Now thirteen, he is a 4.0 student at Van Wert Middle School. He got his start in magic

when he was given a magic kit for Christmas. From there he built a collection of magical knowledge at local magic shops. He has also attended conventions such as the I.B.M., Magi-Fest, and Magicelebration, as well as Tannen’s Magic Camp. After just three years of work on his performances, Tyler has already received various awards such as first place in Junior Close-Up and third place in Stage at the Magi-Fest competition as well as second place at the I.B.M. Close-Up competition. Recently, Tyler has performed at the YMX show at the I.B.M. convention, as well as in local restaurants, stages, homes, and anywhere “that needs some magic.”

Master Payne

MASTER PAYNE (USA) has been entertaining audiences in and around the Pacific Northwest with his award-winning magic show for over thirty-five years. Payne’s performances are unique, contemporary and feature many original presentations as a variety of characters. He has performed for a diverse clientele as well as at private parties and civic functions. Though performing primarily in the metropolitan Seattle area, his conjuring skills have been seen by audiences around the world from an Elizabethan Feast served in the Tithe Barn at Buckland Abbey in Plymouth, England, to a Renaissance-themed civic arts festival held in Guam.

CHRISTOPHER QUINTERO (USA), seventeen, resides in Brevard County, Florida, and is an honors student and senior in high school. He has won numerous awards in both youth and adult divisions at

both local and national magic conventions. Currently, he is president of SYM Assembly 143. His favorite place to be is at work, the Magic Dove Magic Shop. His other skills include stilt walking, juggling, diabolo-ing, and Rubik’s Cube solving. He says he has an incredible love for parrots. His stage name is just his last name – Quintero! What a terrific name!

MANDY REED (USA) – magician, illusionist, entertainer, performer – all these titles describe seventeen-year-old Mandy Reed from Eaton, Ohio. She has been performing professionally for the past fifteen years. Mandy has won numerous awards, has been featured on television, and was part of a Japanese film documentary. She and her sisters, Jessica and Shayna, were featured on the cover of the September 2001 issue of The Linking Ring. Mandy has performed in France as well as all over the United States, both individually and along with her sisters. Although Mandy enjoys other hobbies (volleyball and softball), which she plans to continue in college, magic is her passion!

CHIP ROMERO (USA) was only six years old when he knew what he wanted to do with his life – perform magic! After backyard magic at ten, birthday parties at twelve, and a department store promotion

at sixteen, he became a frequent performer at malls and conventions by twenty-three. He began his full-time magic career in the late 1980s at Magic Island in Houston, and at comedy clubs across the country. Then he discovered cruise ships! By the early nineties he had the largest illusion act afloat and to date has spent well over eight hundred and fifty weeks on cruise ships – surely the all-time king of cruise magicians. He also is a magic historian and has one of the finest collections of contemporary magic anywhere.

GEORGE SATERIAL (USA) is the first and only magician to receive magic’s highest honor, the Gold Medal of Excellence, from both the I.B.M. and the S.A.M. (1999). His award-winning routine is entitled “Timeless Magic,” and time seems to stand still. He has performed this routine throughout the world from New York City to Lisbon, Portugal to New Zealand. In addition, George has one of the best dove acts in the business. He and his wife, Holly, who live in Massachusetts, also have a stage illusion act which they perform on cruise ships.

T. J. SHIMELD (USA) has performed professionally since age eleven, working events from birthday parties to an eight-year apprenticeship with Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company. His articles on magic have appeared in the Magic SYMbol, The Linking Ring, and MAGIC, and in his own publication, FizBin: An Independent Magazine for and by the Young Magician. He is co-founder and president of The Vanishing Wheelchair, Inc. and Fli-Rite Productions, Inc. Currently, Shimeld produces

programs for schools and libraries and is Ring Reports and Ring Events editor for The Linking Ring. He lives in Morganton, North Carolina, with his wife, Jennifer, and their six-year-old son, Zachary.

JAY TEMAAT (USA) started out doing rope tricks when he was eight. From there his passion for magic has been growing ever since. He started competing in February 2011. Jay competed in the World Magic Seminar Teen Stage Contest and received a scholarship to attend the McBride Magic and Mystery School. Since then, he has received numerous awards. He earned the title 2012 East Coast Champion of Magic after winning first place in the teen competition at the Magic at the Beach convention in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In March 2012, he received the People’s Choice Award as well as second place in the adult stage contest at the Thirty Eighth Annual Winter Carnival of Magic in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

ARTHUR TRACE (USA) has taken magical entertainment in a new direction by combining magic and theatre in an innovative and artful way. In 2005, Trace was only the eighth magician in history to be awarded the I.B.M. Gold Medal Award of Excellence in Stage Magic. In 2006 he became a FISM award winner in Stockholm. In 2007 Arthur was awarded the Best Cabaret Magic award at The World Magic Awards, and in 2009, he was a featured performer on Masters of Illusion. Arthur met his wife, Melissa, while he was performing in the Palace of Mystery at the Magic Castle; he later proposed to her on the very same stage. They now live in Sherman Oaks, California, with their dog, Ava.

VIRGINIA PENINSULA FIFES & DRUMS  (USA) is a group of fifers and drummers from the Virginia peninsula who are former members of either the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums and/ or Yorktown Fifes and Drums. The Virginia Peninsula Fifes and Drums perform with other alumni members from their respective units for various occasions. Members of this organization have a love for the music and carry on the spirit of fifing and drumming from the American Revolutionary War period.

GEOFF WILLIAMS (USA) has won over two dozen magic and comedy awards, in both stage and close-up, in the twenty-seven years he’s been performing for corporate and family audiences. His Miracles For Mortals DVD set has had rave reviews worldwide. The DVD, I Hate David Copperfield, was on Penguin Magic’s bestseller list for over a year. He has performed and lectured throughout Europe, South America, and all over the USA (including the Magic Castle). He has written Top Ten Lists for the Late Show with David Letterman. Geoff married his supermodel sweetheart, Shelley, on October 10,

2010, and they live in St. Pete Beach, Florida.

AN SUNG WOO (South Korea) is one of the most exciting, colorful, and magnetic transformation acts in the world today. During a non-stop, dynamic, superbly choreographed production, he amazes the audience with staggering, flashing costume transformations that happen in front of our eyes in a second.

MA YANYAN (China) comes from a generational magic family. The past three generations, including her mother, were involved in magic performances. At nine she enrolled in the Dalian Art School to study acrobatics and magic. Through years of rigorous training she developed her superlative talents. In

2009, she won second prize in general magic at FISM Bejing. Since then she has gone on to great acclaim in Asia and Europe. Her performance this evening marks her American debut.

YUJI YASUDA ( Japan) was winner of the 1994 FISM Illusion Prize, one first prize in the 1987 S.A.M. Las Vegas Convention, and was a finalist in the 1983 I.B.M. Hawaii Convention. He will present his traditional, high-energy Japanese performance and his quick-change performance with incredible visual effects. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it!

GU YING (China) earned the prestigious title of Class-1 Performer in Acrobats in 2005 for her highly individualistic work. Her talents have taken her to perform in Indonesia, Israel, the Philippines, Singapore, Germany, Spain, and Luxembourg. Her many awards include the Gold Medal Presidential Prize from the Republic of France. In 2003, she won the Award of Young and Excellent Performer in North Korea. Only twenty-six, among the major acts she has performed and mastered are the diablo, double trapeze, saucers, spinning rugs, rolling cups, and the single red silk.

The International Brotherhood of Magicians conducts annual contests in Close-up Magic and Stage Magic. These high-profile events attract contestants from every corner of the globe.

The I.B.M.’s “Gold Medal International Award of Excellence in Stage Performance” and “Gold Cups International Award of Excellence in Close-up Performance” are the pinnacles of achievement in the world of magic, and they are not conferred every year. Since these awards first began in 1980, there have been only seven recipients of The Gold Cups and only eight recipients of The Gold Medal. Each of these honors is accompanied by $5,000 in U.S. currency.

In 2012, the Youth category awards in Stage and Close-Up are supported and funded by the I.B.M. Endowment and Development Fund to encourage participation by our

Youth in magic. The most outstanding Youth Member (age 7 through 17) in the Stage performance category and the most outstanding Youth Member in the Close-up performance category each will receive a special prize package from Fantasma Magic.

For complete information on award categories and prizes, visit the Contest area at www.magician.org.

Wherever the International Brotherhood of Magicians holds its annual convention, hundreds who attend give back to the local community. This has been our tradition for many years.

HOSPITAL SHOWSOn Tuesday of this week, I.B.M. members performed two magic shows at a local hospital.  This year the Hospital Show

Director is Scott Hood (Ring 49, Ontario, Canada). Members of local Ring 103 and other volunteers put on the two shows. The hospital selected was the Naval Medical Centre at Portsmouth, which gives care to military families stationed at the Naval base. One of the unique treatment programs of this hospital is their Wounded Warrior Program for men and women returning from their service overseas. Magicians entertained patients and their families with a morning and an afternoon show.

SHARE THE MAGIC: BUY A LAPEL PINSince 2005, special stickers for name badges – and in more recent years, collectible lapel pins – have been sold to attendees

to raise money for a local charity. The five-dollar donations (or more, on a voluntary basis) have totaled between $1,200 and $1,500 each year, resulting in over $14,000 given to local charities by the I.B.M. A check will be presented to this year’s recipient, the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Virginia, during the Saturday evening show.

Membership Chairman Terry Richison designed the semi-cloisonné pins this year, as he did for the Nashville and San Diego I.B.M. Conventions. Phil Messina is in charge of sales in Norfolk, and you can buy your collectible lapel pin at the registration desk or from one of the several people who will be selling them.

PLEASE NOTE: When you see thirteen-year-old Alexa Richison at the registration desk – or coming toward you – just go ahead and get out your five- or ten- or twenty-dollar bill. She won’t take no for an answer. The daughter of Terry and Sindie Richison, Alexa has been the Star Salesperson of the collectible pins ever since they were introduced.

Buying and proudly wearing one of the lapel pins will show that you are helping to “Share the Magic” and continuing the tradition of generosity in the I.B.M. Thanks to all who participated.
