1. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH YOUR STFX ONLINE ACCOUNTAll students are issued a StFX online account. Your StFX username and original password were included in your acceptance package.

Your StFX account allows you access to your StFX email, office365, course content, and campus Wi-Fi and printing services. Your email is the hub for messages to and from StFX faculty and staff, as well as your friends. Your StFX account is the email account to be used throughout the registration process and during your time at StFX for communications.

TO ACCESS YOUR STFX EMAIL ACCOUNT· Go to office365.stfx.ca· Login using your StFX username and password (provided in your acceptance package)· Click on the Mail tile When first logging into your StFX email you will be required to provide a secondary email or SMS number (text) as an additional way to gain access to your account.

Included with your StFX account is the Microsoft Office Suite. Microsoft Office applications can be accessed online or you can download and install them on your personal electronic devices. To get Microsoft Office applications, login to office365.stfx.ca and click the ‘Install Now’ button at the top right corner.

New student registration opens July 11 and July 12,based on degree program (see below).

You will be sent an email to your StFX (webFX) account prior to July 11 which will contain a link to your exact registration start time. We strongly encourage you to register as close as possible to your registration start time for the best course selection. You will be able to add and drop courses in Banner until the end of the first full week of classes in September.

Getting your StFX ID card is easy – just follow these two steps: 1. ORIENTATION WEEK 2017Orientation Week begins with the welcoming of all first year students on September 2. The day isfilled with excitement as your classmates arrive and move into residence. The O-Crew is a group of upper year student leaders who host events and activities throughout the week. From opening day to the final concert at the end of the week, the schedule of events is guaranteed to be fun and inspiring. You will meet your faculty before starting classes, get to know other first year students, and go down a giant Jell-O slide! By the end of the week, you will feel like a part of the Xaverian family.

CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITYThe StFX Safety & Security Services team fosters a community experience and sense of belongingthat immediately connects students to the campus and has them poised for success.

The Safety and Security Operations Centre and Service Desk (located at 5005 Chapel Square –902-867-4444) serves the campus community 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The Operations Centre and Service Desk provides general campus information, directions, card/key services along with incident and emergency response coordination. In partnership with each student whohas limitations, we will work closely to ensure that all nutritional needs are being met whileavoiding any allergens. BALANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH STFXWe recognize that we have a responsibility to use our resources wisely and to protect themfor future generations. Natural materials, foods, packaging, proper farming and tradepractices, and innovative recycling programs are just a few of our sustainable practices.

RESIDENCE AND FOOD SERVICEStudents living on campus in residence must subscribe to one of the university meal plans which meet the minimum requirement as it applies to their residence assignment. Students in traditional residence must indicate their meal preference by August 15, those who do not will automatically be enroled into the 17 meal plan. There are three meals served daily at Morrison Hall. Monday through Friday (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and two meals (brunch and dinner) served on Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to meal plans, the purchasing of DCB provides all students with an easy budgeting and purchasing option. DCB or ‘declining cash balance’ is a debit system that allows students to purchase items at Morrison Hall and the retail outlets located at Bloomfield Centre, Keating Centre, newly renovated Mount St. Bernard Café and coffee shops. The credit works from your ID card and functions similar to a standard gift card by swiping the card at the point of purchase on campus. Additional DCB can be bought in blocks of $50 plus tax. DINING ON CONSCIOUSENVIRONMENTALLY

CAMPUS COMMUNITYAt StFX, we are serious about environmental sustainability and the health of our planet. From2008 to 2016 we reduced our energy use by 27.5 per cent, leading to a 21.8 per cent drop ingreenhouse gas emissions. That’s equivalent to removing over 1,500 mid-sized cars from theroad, every single year.

Our students, faculty and staff are highly engaged in making StFX a clean and green community. We’re investing over $12 million in projects to improve energy efficiency across campus, meaning we will decrease our energy use and carbon emissions even more in the years to come.

StFX students have led the way on energy projects, successfully creating a proposal that saw the installation of 40 solar panels on top of our student union building. They’ve also organized community clean-ups and campus-wide events to promote the importance of making sustainable, green-friendly choices.

Students living off-campus in Antigonish or the surrounding area are encouraged to connectearly and often with their off-campus Students’ Union representative. THE TOWN OF ANTIGONISHAntigonish is a warm and welcoming university town with many big city amenities. It is home to a vibrant downtown with funky stores and coffee shops, quick comfort food and fine dining. Amenities – from grocery stores (Tuesday student discounts) to laundry services, pharmacies to shops, a new convenience store at the SUB as well as a regional hospital and other community services – are all within walking distance. Antigonish features a thriving arts community with live theatre, music and galleries. We are close to sandy beaches and the rugged Highland hills of Nova Scotia. Antigonish is easily accessible from the Trans Canada Highway and is a two hour drive from Halifax. The 4,000-plus StFX students give the town a sense of youthful energy and potential.

RECREATIONStFX Recreation offers students a wide variety of recreational and educational opportunities. StFX’s recreation facilities are incorporated into three buildings: The Charles V. Keating Centre,Oland Centre and Alumni Aquatic Centre along with several outdoor fields including an artificial turf and eight-lane track. We recently added complete outdoor track and field facilities for all jumping and throwing events. In addition to the on-campus facilities, students can take advantage of local facilities, trails and waterways. The opportunities are endless to get out and get involved. Your student ID card is your recreation membership card. We offer many different programs and services and support many student-led society and club initiatives including pilates fusion, yoga, group fitness, adult learn to skate, lifeguard training, pick-up hockey, first aid, and personal training, just to name a few. STFX INTRAMURALSStFX Intramurals provide the opportunity for students to participate in team and individual sports through a variety of leagues and tournaments, in addition to a variety of ‘free-play’ andinstructional opportunities.

You are strongly encouraged to participate in intramural activities and to make daily physical activity a part of your routine. Intramural sports at StFX begin in September and continue throughout the academic year to April. These are events that give you a chance to get active and have fun with friends. VARSITY ATHLETICSThe StFX Department of Athletics represents 12 teams participating in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) competition. STUDENT SUCCESS CENTREStFX’s Student Success Centre is just that! We have instructors available to provide students with tools for a successful academic experience. Our workshop program develops valuable academic skills, both for students transitioning from high school to university and for those already immersed in their studies at StFX. Students can also be placed with a tutor and have one-on-one Student Success Centre appointments. It’s a great place for students to learn to stop procrastinating, brainstorm ideas, receive feedback on drafts, and improve their grammar. HEALTH AND COUNSELLING CENTREThe interdisciplinary team members at the Health and Counselling Centre provide a student- centred approach to primary health care. Our Collaborative Care Team is comprised of family physicians,registered nurses, a nurse practitioner, counsellors and a psychologist, who also work in partnership with community-based health providers and resources.

We provide a range of health services for StFX students, as well as individual and group counselling, and campus-wide wellness initiatives. There is no additional charge for most of our services, and students are reminded to bring their provincial health card, along with any relevant medical documentation.

Students receive excellent care from our health professionals, and we pride ourselves on providing our students with a warm, welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment. In compliance with Nova Scotia Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) legislation, students’ health information is protected by confidentiality at the StFX Health and Counselling Centre. To book an appointment with our Intake Nurse, students may call 902-867-2263, or drop by the Health and Counselling Centre. TUITION AND FEES A MESSAGE FROM YOUR STUDENTS’ UNION

ABOUT YOUR FEESSTUDENTS’ UNION HEALTH AND DENTAL PLANThe StFX Students’ Union (The U) Health and Dental Plans are provided to ensure all students are covered by a health and/or dental plan while attending StFX.

The U health and dental plans include coverage specifically designed for student needs. Therefore students may find it beneficial to remain on the plans to increase total coverage by coordinating the benefits of two or more plans. Canadian students with alternative coverage may opt-out of the health and dental plans by providing proof of coverage. Those eligible to opt-out of the plans are Canadian students who demonstrate they have benefits coverage available from another insurer. To Opt Out of the health and dental plans you MUST complete the online Opt Out form between August 1 and September 10. Opt Out must be completed each year.

Go online to www.studentbenefits.ca, click on the StFXSU logo, select ‘Opt Out Now’ and complete the online form as directed. You will be required to upload a digital copy of your current proof of extended coverage into the form. This proof of coverage can take the form of a current benefits card or a letter from your provider stating that you have extended health and dental coverage. Canadian students who do not opt out between August 1st and September 10th will then be enroled on the health and dental plans for the entire calendar year and be subject to pay the plan fees.

Students wishing to enrol (Opt In) on the plans can do so at www.studentbenefits.ca prior to Sept 30th each year; this applies to students who are enroled in part time studies, masters programs and those who register late.

All international students (non-Canadian residents) are automatically enroled in the International Health and Dental Plans regardless if he/she has Canadian citizenship or alternate coverage. This coverage ensures all non-Canadian residents have comprehensive coverage similar to provincial health care. Please refer to The U website at theu.ca for further details.

Three years ago I read through a similar information package to the one in your hands. At the time I could not imagine the sense of community that would develop throughout my time here at StFX. StFX is a university unlike any other: the lifelong friendships you will make, the professors you will connect with, the clubs and societies you will partake in, these all add up to what many of us here coin the

‘Xperience’. My name is Annie Sirois and I am your Students’ Union President for the 2017-2018 year. The StFX

Students’ Union (“the U”) is a not-for-profit organization that all students are members of. The U exists to represent students’ voices to the university, government, and other bodies to ensure that you get the most enriching university experience possible. We offer dozens of services for students such as our free late drive-home service DriveU, Student Food Resource Centre, Student Advocates if you require assistance working through the Community Code, and we operate the Golden X Inn student bar. If you’re staying in residence your House President and Vice-President(s) work within the U’s Residence Affairs office, and the same is true of Off-Campus Leaders.

The U is governed by our Student Council to which I encourage all of you to consider running for in September as a first-year student representative. We just introduced two new positions this year as well: Students of Aboriginal and African Descent.

The U, in collaboration with the university, organizes Orientation Week. The sea of students dressed in pink shirts and funny outfits that you will encounter on your first day is our Orientation Crew (O-CREW). O-CREW is comprised entirely of students—students who understand the pressures of moving away from home or starting a new chapter in life. O-CREW is there to make sure that you know from the moment you step on this campus there is a whole Xaverian family supporting you.

How do I pay my account?There are several different ways for you to pay tuition and fees. Refer to the fees section on pages 18 and 19 for more information.

Does StFX Employ students?StFX offers many opportunities for students to work on campus. About 25 per cent of students are hired annually.

I haven’t applied for residence yet, what do I do?If you have not yet applied for residence, send in theapplication that you received in your acceptance package or apply online at www.stfx.ca/apply .

What about my meal plan?You received an opportunity to select your meal plan online when you received your room assignment. If you did not select a meal plan, you may contact Residence Services at 902-867-3970 or email [email protected] . For more information on the meal plans available to you check out our website www.stfx.ca/dining . If you do not select a meal plan you will automatically be assigned a 14-meal a week plan.

Applying for a Student Loan?StFX participates in government student loan programswith both Canada and the United States. Canadian students should apply for loans through their home province or territory prior to arriving at university, most applications open in May for the following September. American students may apply for loans up to one year in advance of classes starting in September through FSA or Sallie Mae. All loans require confirmation of enrolment to be completed by StFX; this will be done for students after the start of the fall term beginningon September 5. Applying for a Bursary?StFX offers a modest bursary program to assist full-time undergraduate students in meeting their academic financial obligations. This is a supplemental program and not designed to cover all of a student’s costs. The bursary program runs from September to March of each year.

Bursary applications can be submitted online beginning two weeks prior to the start of each term until the deadline date for each bursary. Bursaries are based primarily on financial need, satisfactory academic standing, and may include other criteria as specified by donors. For more information, please visit
