PUBLISHER’S MESSAGEShawn Bennett

Publisher’sMESSAGE

Welcome to our celebration of the Top Dogs in Canada

for 2013, featuring the most comprehensive top dog

statistical listings found anywhere in print! Thank you

to our partner Sue at Canuckdogs.com for providing

us these stats, and more importantly for her tireless

work day in and day out on her incredible Canuckdogs

website.

2013 was another amazing year for Canadian-bred

and owned dogs, starting with some exciting wins at

Crufts, including the Doherty’s PBGV “Jilly” going Best

in Show and JD, Canada’s Top Dog of 2013, winning

the breed. It continued right through the year with

many Canadian dogs winning at prestigious events

such as The Garden, Eukanuba National Championship,

and many other world-stage events. I heard from

Penny Lewis while she was attending the Florida

Winter Circuit and she reported some exciting wins

for Canadian dogs, including multiple group wins and

even a Reserve Best in Show win by a lovely English

Setter (whom I might own). While I was writing this

column I heard from Gail Hamilton of Alder Akitas in

Thunder Bay – her boy Dallas just won a Best in Show

in MA. Dallas is now a member of an elite club of dogs

that have won Best in Shows in both Canada and USA.

As Canadian purebred dog enthusiasts, we should be

proud of our accomplishments – while our numbers

may not compare to other countries, our quality of dogs

is second to none.

Once again Canadian Dog Fancier travelled to many

shows across the country throughout the year, and

believe it or not we have seen some growth at many

of the shows. Yes, you read that correct, we have seen

some growth. Look at the AKC Summer Classic shows

with an entry of just shy of 800 dogs at the all breed

show on Sunday, and the Caledon shows with an entry

just shy of 700 dogs in the all breed show on Saturday!

What was most exciting about these shows was seeing

depth in many breeds, we witnessed rings full of

just one breed, actually giving judges something to

compare and think about their choices, not just going

through the motions and handing out a ribbon to the

only dog in the ring.

Why are some of these shows growing, while others

continue to decline? I don’t think there is one simple

answer, it’s a combination of many things, but it sure

is refreshing to see some growth and excitement at

some of these events. I use the word events because I

think that is one of the keys, making these weekends

“events”, rather than just robotic shows. The two shows

mentioned above were held at world-class facilities

and both hosted many specialties as well as a marquee

event. Clubs need to be creative, what worked in the

‘80s doesn’t work anymore.

While these were big events and well attended, the

size posed some challenges that Canadians are not

used to. Facilities like this are not cheap, so exhibitors

I want to provide you with an update of the Canadian

Kennel Club Foundation, a charitable organization that

supports canine health research and promotion of the

canine-human relationship.

A number of new board appointments were made a few

months ago, and since then, considerable work has been

underway. This includes a strategy to more effectively

market the foundation and to kick-start the process of

soliciting funding applications. One of our new board

members, Sue Dalos, has secured an advertising agency to

work with the foundation, pro bono, to help in this regard.

The foundation is seeking volunteers to work on the

following working group subcommittees:

Website Redesign – led by Amanda Kelley

Health Research Funding (primarily academic/vet med) –

led by Dr. Rod Jouppi, DVM

Fundraising – led by Allison Foley

Project/Community Funding – led by Bruce Saunders, LLB

It is very exciting to see the energy in this new group of

volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to work on any of

these committees, please send an email to Tara Merriman,

[email protected] and provide you contact information,

specifying which committee(s) for which you have time,

knowledge and desire to help. Work is done primarily by

email. The time commitment will be less of an “ongoing”

nature (than being a board member) but will require some

concerted effort over a fairly short time frame. We have a

wonderful opportunity to make a difference for our canine

friends with your help.

If you support the goals of the foundation, but don’t have

the time to spare to volunteer, you can always make a

donation to advance its work. Here is how: http://www.

ckcf.ca/?page_id=19&lang=en You will be issued with

a receipt that can be claimed on your income tax, as the

foundation is a registered charity. Thank you!

even admission fees. Distances between setups and

the rings were further; crowds were thicker so it poses

challenges to get to the rings. Some folks find these

as negatives – well sorry but I see these as positives!

Those people that you are wading through to get to the

Musings

WithWILLIAMALEXANDER

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog addressing

my concerns regarding our sport and the

direction in which we seem to be heading.

In that blog I asked a question, “As a

membership, what change would you like to see at

our shows, from our parent club, or just the sport in

general?” I must have struck a nerve as the response

was tremendous. I will try to pass them on as best I can.

A great number commented on the lack of dog people

in the office, to the point where a question, a dog-

related question, comes in and the caller is re-directed

until they become tired of waiting and disconnect. The

time it takes to explain their problems adequately until

the employee understands becomes frustrating, and

the same ending occurs. A disconnect is not a problem

resolved.

A “ presence” at the shows was a common suggestion,

from banners or signs indicating that this is a

sanctioned event, or a booth, “like the old days”, with

information and answers. Better use of social media

to advertise for these clubs. Even community bulletin

boards at local coffee establishments would be

helpful. A need for public education, selling the idea

of purebred ownership. This doesn’t just fall onto the

parent club, breeders need to encourage puppy buyers

to attend these events, or even accompany them in a

mentor capacity.

Many ideas can be borrowed from other successful

registries. The baby puppy class has gone over very

well, but just don’t let the price chase people away.

Another kennel club’s “my dog can do that” class have

also gone over very well with the public, and we can

use it as well, from obedience to rally to agility. If the

public can see how much fun it is to compete, they

may get interested, and let’s face it, if one person per

weekend gains interest, the sport will grow.

Other suggestions were, same-day entry for exhibition

only, to allow visiting dogs a “legal” way of attending.

Same-day entry for competitions, as well, was

mentioned. Some respondents commented that if they

knew there was an entry in their breed already, they

would be more interested in entering their own dogs

knowing there was a chance at points. The down side

would be scheduling. On the upside, exhibitors would

have to stay longer, and there is no better education

then having to stay and watch and listen.

Organized classes, such as handling or grooming

would be a wonderful tool the kennel club could

Page 19: Canadian Dog Fancier - February 2014
Page 20: Canadian Dog Fancier - February 2014

18 CANADIAN DOG Fancier

Musings

use to educate newcomers. We need to educate the

public about purebred dogs. For many reasons they

seem to have fallen from grace, and “designer dogs”

and rescues are the new Lassies and Rin Tin Tins. Dog

shows are the perfect venue to start the marketing.

Some clubs have already started thinking outside the

box, piggy-backing their shows with other public-

friendly events. And once the public returns, education

can commence with such events as “meet the breeds”

and dog show tours, and when they find out we are

not breeding dogs that have horrible health concerns,

but dogs that can do their jobs and still look beautiful,

maybe the tide will turn.

Then purebreds will be in the forefront once again.

Then, and only then, will our sport grow to what it once

was. It’s a trickle-down effect that starts at the top. c

with Dr. Dick MeenThe Warkworth Notebook

Each season offers me a special treat at my hideaway

and I can never decide which is my favourite. Winter

is always my book season, buried away, without

television, just radio only – surrounded by books and

my dogs looking on of course.

You know it is almost impossible to read a novel these days

without a dog popping up in the opening pages, bringing a

humanity to the story that is rarely achieved without their

presence. My novel of choice this winter is a 900-page epic

called “The Goldfinch” written brilliantly by Donna Tartt. In

this masterpiece it is the presence of a scruffy Maltese that

permits us to see another aspect of the hero’s personality as

they traverse the USA in a Greyhound bus such that we do not

abandon him as we want to do. Kate Atkinson, in her seductive

style, gives us “Lifer After Life” and does not hesitate to use a

canine early on in the story to keep us turning the pages. Thank

heavens for the dogs in our lives. Even Virginia Wolf made an

English Cocker Spaniel the vehicle to preserve the memory of

Elizabeth Barrett Browning in “Flush”.

Last Saturday in the background as I was buried in my book,

was the CBC’s “In Tune”, and believe it or not it was a program

about canines and music. Did you know that Glenn Gould, at

one point in his life wrote an opera? During the first act the

human race was destroyed and in the second act canines

replaced the human race. Yes.

Of course there are many volumes clearly dedicated to our

canine companions being the primary focus. “Amazing Dogs: A

Cabinet of Canine Curiosities’’ by Jan Bondeson is a real treat

and the York University professor, Richard Telesky’s “The Dog

on The Bed: A Canine Alphabet” takes the role of dogs in our

lives to a new level of joy. The psychoanalyst, Jeffrey Masson,

is an extremely productive enthusiast regarding the role of

dogs in our lives. He is the leading voice telling us that it is

the canine who humanized us, not the reverse. He has several

The Warkworth Notebook continued

books that are really worth consuming: “Dogs Make

Us Human: A Global Family Album” and “The Dog Who

Never Stopped Loving”. His new creation: “Beasts:

What Animals Can Tech Us About the Origin of Good

and Evil”, about to be published in March 2014 is

certainly on my must read list.

As a break from my retreat in the country and my

books I took a trip to Stockholm and a dog show. An

entry of 7,700 dogs at one show confirmed the fact

that the books were telling me: canines are an integral

and essential part of our lives.

It also confirmed the fact to me that we in North

America, with our shrinking dog show entries, are not

getting it. In fact I am beginning to believe that the

kennel clubs are perhaps anti-dog and the human-

canine bond. I used to say that it was a state of

ignoring the fact that “the fox is in the hen house” as

far as the CKC and the AKC are concerned in the way

they are addressing their role in preserving the world

of purebred dogs and their evolution. Now I will say

that they are both “engaged in rearranging the deck

chairs on the Titanic”.

I truly want to be wrong.

Happy New Year! c

The Brynmill Kennels began in the late 1970s. Tom and

I imported the great INT CH Whitebriar Jeronimo, whom

Tom would campaign to Top Terrier owner handled, and

who Dan Kiedrowski, of Terrier Type magazine, would

label him “the sire of the decade”.

We have shown many Top Terriers in Canada... Westies

seven times, Wire Fox twice, a Kerry and Welsh once,

as well as Top Dog All Breeds with a Wire Fox and a

Sealyham.

In 2012, I imported NZ CAN AM CH Whitebriar Jaw

Dropper who became Top Dog All Breeds 2013 and

broke many records in the breed.

When JD was awarded his last BIS of the year, the

judge, Mr. Leslie Rogers commented that “Tommy is

looking down from above with a big smile.”

Submitted by David:

The Whitebriar prefix is probably the most famous

Westie kennel in the world, so it came as no surprise

that from the moment JD set foot on Canadian soil, we

knew he was “the one”.

Finishing his title in one weekend with a BIS, he ended

2012 as Canada’s Top Terrier and #5 All Breeds, in

under six months time. Naturally our thoughts turned

to just how much he could accomplish the following

year. In 2013 JD was nothing short of jaw dropping!

Shown fearlessly, he started the year with a BIS,

and would win one every weekend, barring one, to

years end, often winning two or three on the same

weekend! His year would end with him winning all

four BIS at Auld Lang Syne. In March, JD ventured onto

the worldwide stage that is CRUFTS, and emerged

victorious as Best of Breed over 157 Westies and made

the short-list in the Terrier group. The month of May

saw him break both the Canadian BIS record and the

one-year point record for the breed.

In November, JD thrilled all of us when he became the

Top Winning BIS Westie in breed history worldwide

winning his 83rd BIS. We have been thrilled, honoured,

and humbled by the outstanding reception and support

JD has received wherever he goes. One thing is for sure

– never was a dog more aptly named!!!

ometime during the summer of 2012 while

campaigning “Zoom” to Top Toy for 2012 Michael

spoke with Allison and asked if she would like to

show an Affen in 2013 – she agreed and the rest

is history – or rather history making!

The Affenpinscher was Charly, and obviously he was no

ordinary dog. Already a champion of many European

countries and a multiple Best in Show winner he was also

the half brother of the Westminster Best in show winner

“Banana Joe”.

Charly came to Canada and under the guidance of Allison

Foley and Michael he began his career by winning two

group firsts and a Reserve Best in Show. From then on

there was no looking back. Charly quickly became a

Canadian champion and went on to become the leading

contender for Top Toy in 2013.

There were some great competitors in 2013 and Charly

seemed to rise to the top in each competition. Charly

won the 2013 Purina National at Spruce Meadows,

which was Canada’s largest dog show. He also won

Ottawa Kennel Clubs storied Show of Shows under an

international panel of judges.

Finishing the year with 31 All Breed Best in Shows, as

well as a specialty best in show. #1 Affenpinscher, #1

Toy and #2 All breeds. Charly reached heights no other

Affen has accomplished.

A fun a quirky little dog Charly also became the “peoples

favourite” wherever he went. He is a true “monkey” that

is always into mischief. His favourite thing is to rule the

roost from the couch and steal any blue coloured toy that

comes into his path.

record of 257 Group firsts, 10 reserve Best in

Shows, seven Specialty Best in Shows and a whopping

51 all breed Best in Shows. Her results in 2013 made her

the #1 Poodle of all varieties for three consecutive years,

the #1 Non Sporting dog, #3 All Breeds, and #1 Bitch

of All Breeds in Canada for 2013. As well, her lifetime

totals make her the #3 all time Top winning Poodle in

Canadian History. Her two awards of merit at Poodle Club

of America and her Best of Variety at Westminster Kennel

club clearly show she wins at every level of competition.

Bred by Elly Holowaychuk of Vetset Poodles she is the

result of several generations of careful breeding. Her sire

Flynn (Am BIS Can Ch Vetset Highfalutin’ Hallmark) is a

line-bred sixth generation Vetset dog whose pedigree

consists of some of the top kennels in Canada and the

USA including Dorian, Ascot, Rimskittle, and Kaylens.

Her dam Tulip (Am BIS Can Ch Tango Black Tulip), also a

product of many top-producing kennels, was purchased

to be bred to Flynn and what a lovely combination it

turned out to be.

Allison Foley is no stranger to top winning poodles. The

team of Allison and Elly had proved to be a successful

one since their partnership began in 2008 with Kate’s

sire Ch Vetset Highfalutin’ Hallmark. Since then they have

shared much success – but it is the incredible success of

Kate that all others will be compared to.

Kate herself is an incredible poodle. Since puppyhood

she has had that special “look-at-me” quality that has

set her apart from the rest. Kate is an easy keeper who

never misses a meal, she loves to show and is fantastic

with children. She has been the co-pilot in many junior

handling wins and has been the star of two junior

handling nationals. Kate loves her “busy bones” and

is reluctant to move from a hotel bed! Kate will make

limited appearances in the USA until her retirement at

Poodle Club of America this April. She will then try her

hand at the whelping box… stay tuned!

Newt was bred in Ottawa, Ontario by one

of Canada’s top Yorkshire Terrier breeders

Laurie Hunter, The NicNak Yorkshire Terriers

can be seen around the world, as can the

names of many NicNak dogs be seen in the pedigrees

of many top-winning Yorkshire Terriers worldwide

today.

Newt began his Specials career in September 2012

and in 15 months he has become Canada’s all time top

winning Yorkshire Terrier.

He has been awarded 23 All Breed Best in Show

awards, numerous Toy Specialty Best in Shows, Newt

is the 2012 and 2013 Canadian Yorkshire Terrier

National Specialty winner. He has been awarded

over 100 Toy Group firsts, and he finished in the USA

winning group firsts from the classes.

This six-pound package of true Yorkshire Terrier

temperament, has never met a person he does not

instantly form a relationship with, nor met another dog

that he would not stand his ground with.

In 15 months he has never failed to give more than

ever was asked of him – be it in hurricane winds, rain,

cold, or heat, he always showed up to win.

Newt spent a lot of 2013 with David Gignac and J.D.

Westie, and Doug McIntyre and Hatley Whippet, and

loved nothing more than them, and going for walks

with J.D. and Hatley, as well he really enjoyed the

occasional “Terrier” spar and bark in the BIS with his

buddy J.D. aimed at other dogs.

Congratulations to David and J.D. for being awarded

Canada’s #1 Dog of All Breeds, it was a great year with

lots of laughter with Doug, albeit mostly at ourselves...

MSBIS MBIS Am GCh Can GCh Polo’s Air Force One

Owner: Lorianne Amadeo

Breeders: Lynn Faro, Marilyn Thompson, Lorianne Amadeo

Handler: Lorianne Amadeo 5CAPTAINIt all started back in 2009, when Marilyn Thompson

of Seistan Afghans and Lynn Faro asked if I would be

interested in doing a breeding together. They had the

dam “Meena” – Am/Can Ch Seistain’s Behind the Veil

and I had “Aries” – Am/Can Ch Polo’s In The Air Tonite,

Am/Can CD Fch, Sc. CGN CGC. With both dogs carrying

an incredible pedigree, I jumped at the idea of this

breeding. The rest, as they say, is history.

Captain’s pedigree carries such great dogs of the past

– his Great Great Grandfather: “Pepsi” - Ch Kabik’s

The Challenger, who won the Breed at Westminster;

his record breaking son “Runner” – Ch Kabik’s The

Front Runner; uncle “Giggles” – Ch Kabik’s Overnite

Sensation; also “Falstaff” – Ch Mecca’s Falstaff, and

“Killer” – Ch Jorogz’ Heart Breaker. All of

these stud dogs figured prominently in my

breeding program.

What a incredible year 2013 was, as a

Breeder, to be top breeder/owner/handler is

such an important achievement – as well as

Top Hound and #5 All Breed. The sacrifices,

the hard work, the ups and downs, long road

trips, lack of sleep, the joys of breeding,

and the sorrows of saying good bye – I am

so honoured and so proud of Captain, it is

these accomplishment that say “yes it was

all worth it”!

One touching moment was when Carol Graham

awarded Captain best in show, because it was Ms.

Graham, who when I first started with my first show dog,

was handling Afghans. I can’t tell you how many times

I would go BOS to Ms. Graham, and my peers would

tell me to stop showing. They would say you’re wasting

your time. My answer was, “I need to stay in the ring

to learn and to let the judges know I am serious and

here to stay”. After the best in show that Ms. Graham

awarded Captain, I said to her “I can’t tell you how many

times I followed your butt” she said “now look at you.”

I would like to thank everyone from all the judges,

supporters, and friends who made this year possible. I

am so proud, honoured, and grateful to you all.

I have had pure bred dogs for performance sports

since I was in my early teens, but when I got my first

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever in 2000, little did

I know what an impact this breed would have on my

life.

When I picked up my first Toller “Reid” from Lillian

Greensides of Kylador Kennels, I very hesitantly agreed

to show my puppy. I wasn’t interested in

showing, but agreed to give it a try… since she

was so pursuasive ! That little red puppy grew

into the one and only “ MBIS BISS Am CH Can

ranked #1 Toller in Canada in 2006 and was

the first MBIS Toller outside the Maritimes.

Needless to say I was hooked!

Reid is my foundation sire for the Roaneden

bloodline, he is Harvey’s grandsire. I am so

proud of Harvey and how he represents

my breeding program and the breed. I have

worked very hard to build a strong pedigree

with bloodlines from all over the world.

Harvey is an amazing ambassador for the breed. He

loves all people and kids, is kind and gentle, yet has

all the drive and working ability required to work in

the field or in the show ring. I hope by attaining Top

the breed to those who otherwise pass them over. They

The Divine “Miss P”

GCHEX. Tashtins Lookin For Trouble, known

by her fans as “Miss P”, was bred by Lori

Crandlemire, is owned by Lori and her daughter

Kaitlyn Crandlemire, Brody Cavanaugh, and Eddie Dziuk,

and is handled by Team Alexander – Will Alexander,

Kathryn Murray and Anne Phillips.

Miss P was first discovered by Will while being shown

in the Puppy Class at the AKC show. Will took her home

a couple of months later and they’ve been

teamed up together ever since.

In Canada, she has won over 90 Group

Firsts, 15 All Breed Best in Shows and is

#2 Hound. Shown on just a handful of

occasions in the USA, she’s a multiple group

winner, Reserve Best In Show winner, and

two-time Best of Opposite Sex winner

at the National Beagle Club Specialty

show. Miss P was also Best of Breed at the

Phoenix Arizona Beagle Club under Bill

Shelton, the local specialty which preceded

this year’s national in an entry of over 250

Beagles. In her limited showing in the USA

Miss P finished 2013 as the #1 15” Beagle

bitch All Systems.

Miss P’s team has been a dream come

true for all involved… Lori and Kaitlyn

Crandlemire are deservedly proud of all her

accomplishments. Brody Cavanaugh is a third

generation Beagle fancier whose grandfather

was the original owner of Ch. Herolds Prince

Charles, a National Beagle Club BOB winner

in the early 1970s shown by Bob Forsyth.

Will has long been associated with top-winning Beagles

in Canada. His belief in Miss P is an honor, and he

presents and conditions her flawlessly. The team was

rounded out earlier this year with co-owner Eddie Dziuk

who saw Miss P as a youngster and instantly fell in love

with her. Involved with Beagles since his teens in the

mid 1970s, Eddie has owned numerous top winners

including the 2008 Westminster BIS winner “Uno”.

From all of us involved with “Miss P”, we thank

everyone that has contributed to her success.

abe crowned a fantastic year of achievement in Canada by being the first Basenji ever, in Canadian Kennel Club history, or the history of the Basenji Club of Canada, to finish in the

Top Ten dogs of All Breed. Consider the achievement. Basenjis are dogs low in popularity and on the registration scale, and not known for the “cuteness” factor. Basenjis are a performance dog, and Gabe embodies the performance standard in the show ring. Edgar maintains him in superb condition and he has beautiful movement, belying his ever so square body. This was a record-breaking year for Gabe who broke the most record Best in Shows by a Basenji in the CKC in one year, which is 16, and he broke the record for total All Breed points earned by a Basenji. The record on all those fronts was previously held by his grandfather, MBIS MBISS BIF D Ch Ahmahr Nahr’s Jake Jamar To Mibre RC JGC CCC CD RN.

Gabe is a charming dog whose only desire is to please. He loves his handler, he loves his “moms,” and he loves his kennel mates. Gabe has enjoyed himself playing with a Portuguese Waterdog and Barbet buddies. He has traveled this great county in their company, from coast to coast, to meet the dog fancy. Gabe’s record in Canada is 57 group firsts, and 136 total overall group placements in 2013.

Only one record remains to be broken, and Gabe and Edgar will try to break it. This will require more of the same great conditioning and performances that Gabe and Edgar have turned in this year and the appreciation of the judges and the dog fancy.

Gabe wants to particularly thank the judges and the fancy for supporting him all year long. He has had a tremendous audience no matter where he has gone. He enjoys meeting each and every one of you.

Gabe comes from a long line of special dogs. Gabe looks forward to his attempt to better his grandfather’s record, and to helping improve the bloodlines in Canada for Basenjis.

Once in a while a special puppy is born

and grows up to be a “Star”. That is every

breeders dream.

On May 1, 2010 such a puppy was born.

From day one on he stood out from the rest. We called

him “Murdoch” because he was always investigating

this or that.

At six months of age we started showing him. At the

Brantford show he finished his Canadian Championship

and won the puppy group, with Michelle Therrien

showing him.

In 2011 Murdoch attended the World Dog Show with

our National Club’s vice president, Michel Raymond. He

won “Best Young Male” and was awarded Excellent.

In 2012, Michelle showed him locally and they finished

the year as #2 Barbet. During this year Murdoch won

the Regional Barbet Specialty. At the beginning of

2013, I called Edgar Rojas and asked him if he would

show Murdoch, and he agreed. A full campaign was

planned, and a historical journey for the Barbet began.

The boys travelled from one coast to the other, racking

up the points.

My husband Tom and I attended the UKC, first Barbet

Specialty in the USA to help support the breed in

America. With Tom on the lead they won the Specialty.

As soon as the photos were over we had to hurry back

to Canada as Edgar was leaving the next day for Kenora.

At the Kenora show, Pamela Bruce awarded Murdoch

his first Best In Show.

Murdoch’s record to date is: five Best In Shows, six

Reserves Bests and 53 group first placements. With

Edgar’s expert guidance, Murdoch also won four

specialties in Canada. Murdoch is the #1 Barbet in

Canada, the #2 Sporting dog and also one of the Top

All Breed dogs in Canada.

What a journey this has been. Thank you Edgar for

believing in Murdoch and making this breeders dream

come true.

Micah finished 2013 as Canada’s Top Winning Puppy of

Feature

In December 1996, a group of judges from across the

country got together at the Credit Valley show in Toronto.

There was much discussion about how “We, the judges,

could make our judging more meaningful, more informed,

and move into the 21st century, a more prepared group”.

It was decided to re-ignite a judges association,

nationwide, to be named the Canadian Dog Judges

Association. From the original 100 members, it has grown

to over 270 covering all of Canada, together with a few

non-resident members. This represents over 80 percent

of all CKC judges.

The late Fred Heal, of Spencerville, Ontario, was the first

chair, who then served as president of the CDJA in 1997.

Letters went out across the country inviting judges at

all levels of approval to join and make this a voice for

judges. With a core of committed members a constitution

was created, a newsletter begun, and a plan of action put

in place.

Following Fred Heal’s tenure as president from 1997

to 2001, Virginia Lyne of Victoria, BC stepped up to

the plate to serve as president from 2002 to 2005.

Subsequent to Virginia Lyne’s term, Thora Brown of

Almonte, Ontario stood as president from 2006 to 2013.

Margaret Jones from Shawnigan Lake, BC now stands as

the CDJA’s current president.

From its inception education was high on the list of

priorities.

a) for judges – to do their job of judging knowledgeably,

efficiently and professionally

b) for exhibitors – to know that judges cared about what

they were doing, wanted to learn more and how to

share knowledge with the judges

c) for clubs – to give them the means to contact judges,

to see what judges were doing and to offer a means to

share these endeavors

So what has CDJA accomplished?

• Anewsletterwasestablishedcontainingarticles

and interviews on breeds, procedures, rule changes,

practical tips, Q & As.

• Inkeepingwiththegrowthoftechnology,CDJA

established its own website that has just recently been

updated. Here each member has an individual page

providing biographical details, contact information, and

a listing of all his licenses/permits. To help clubs find

judges to fill a specific need, the site is searchable by

History of the Canadian Dog Judges Association….

approvals, licensed and

on permit. There is also

a listing of all upcoming

seminars, specialties

and mentoring

opportunities. In

October 2000, CDJA

ran its first conference

– a two-day intensive

series of seminars

on breeds, rules, and

canine knowledge. At

this time CKC was also

offering a two-day

conference and it was

decided it would be

much more beneficial

if the two groups

worked together – so

in 2001 the first joint

conference was held

in Vancouver.

By Dr. Jamie Rothenburger

Bloat and stomach twists can occur quickly with deadly

results. This common condition also goes by the name gastric

dilatation and volvulus (GDV).

When the stomach is twisted into an abnormal position, the

esophagus is obstructed, gas builds up and cannot escape

leading to life threatening complications. Pressure on major

blood vessels prevents blood flow back to the heart causing

shock. This pressure also cuts off the blood supply to the

stomach wall causing tissue death. Left untreated, GDV

ultimately causes death.

Risk Factors

Dogs that are at an increased risk of GDV include large and

giant breeds, although dogs of any size can be affected. Breeds

specifically at risk include: Great Danes, Standard Poodles,

German Shepherds, Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Bernese

Mountain Dogs, Irish Wolfhounds, Rottweilers, Gordon and Irish

Setters, Weimaraners, St. Bernards, and Bassett Hounds.

Known risk factors for GDV include anxious temperament,

rapid eating, deep chests, lean body condition and a close

relative that has had GDV. Additionally, management factors

that predispose dogs include once-daily feeding and vigorous

exercise after meals.

Clinical Signs

“Most dogs present with a very acute history of restlessness,

agitation, non-productive retching or vomiting foamy white

froth. Sometimes the dogs may appear bloated, or may

collapse. If any of these signs are noted, the dog should be

immediately examined by a veterinarian,” said Dr. Lindsey

Kurach, DVM, Small Animal Surgery Resident at Michigan State

University.

In addition to the distended abdomen that accompanies bloat

and GDV, dogs may breath faster and go into shock. “Dogs in

shock may be depressed or lethargic and have an increased

heart rate, pale gums and cold paws,” said Dr. Germaine Hung,

DVM, Small Animal Surgery Resident at the Western College of

Medicine.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Early detection and presentation to a veterinarian for

treatment are essential because dogs that are in severe

shock are less likely to survive compared to those that are

mildly affected. “Dogs with GDV need to undergo emergency

surgery,” said Dr. Hung. “Delays could result in a poorer

outcome and potentially death.”

GDV is one of the most common surgical emergencies in

dogs. “When I’m on call for emergency surgery, I perform one

GDV surgery every one to two weeks,” said Dr. Kurach. Your

veterinarian may suspect GDV based on clinical signs and may

confirm the diagnosis with an x-ray. Blood work may show

changes of inflammation and electrolyte imbalances. Since

dogs with GDV are in various stages of shock, immediate fluid

therapy and release of the trapped gas are done to stabilize

them prior to surgery.

During surgery, the stomach is untwisted back to its original

position and is tacked to the body wall to prevent recurrence.

Up to 80 percent of dogs that are treated for GDV, but do

not have their stomach attached to the body wall, will have

a recurrence. The stomach wall and spleen are checked for

viability and dead tissues are removed if discovered.

Ongoing fluid and pain management are required for a

few days following surgery. Water and food are carefully

reintroduced before dogs are sent home. In terms of the long-

term outcome, “most dogs do very well, provided it is caught

early enough,” said Dr. Hung. “Survival rates range from 73

percent to 90 percent.”

Prevention

“Owners of at-risk breeds should be very aware of the

clinical signs associated with GDV and seek veterinary care

immediately if these occur. The longer the stomach is twisted,

the more likely the stomach and/or spleen tissues may die and

require removal. If this is necessary, the chances of survival

decreases,” said Dr. Kurach.

Many veterinarians advocate preventative surgery for at-risk

breeds. Although this surgery can be performed at any time,

it can be advantageous and more cost-effective to do it at the

same time as another procedure, most often during a spay-

neuter surgery. Minimally-invasive surgical techniques are also

available at some specialty practices. There is good evidence

to show that surgery to permanently attach the stomach to

the body wall works to prevent GDV in most dogs and has

minimal side effects. Researchers in Georgia followed 61 dogs

after this stomach-attaching surgery, either as a preventative

or treatment of GDV, and none of the dogs developed GDV

following surgery.

It is adventitious to feed multiple, small meals rather than

once-a-day feeding. There are several products on the market

that are designed to increase the length of time it takes for

your dog to consume their meal. For example, there are bowls

with large grooves that divide the bowl and make it difficult

for gulping. I can’t say enough good things about food toys.

In addition to providing mental stimulation and exercise, they

also significantly slow down the amount of time it takes for

your dog to consume its meal.

The Latest Research

Although the causes of GDV in dogs are unknown, research

into this devastating disease is ongoing, including a new

initiative at Michigan State University. According to Dr. Kurach,

“this research will investigate the underlying causes of GDV

including genetic predisposition.” There are also a number of

newly-published studies available. The reasons for emergency

room visits by police and pet German Shepherd dogs were

evaluated in Pennsylvania. Only 3.3% of all dogs in the study

had GDV. This study also found that there was no difference

in the number of dogs affected by GDV between the two

occupational groups.

The source of gas in GDV is a topic of much debate.

Researchers in Connecticut sought to answer this question by

analyzing the stomach gas from 10 dogs affected by GDV. Their

results show that gas within the stomach of a bloated dog is

very different from room air, suggesting that gulping air into

the stomach is not the source. The researchers speculate that

bacterial fermentation creates the gas, although more studies

are needed to understand the role of food types and the

source of the fermenting bacteria.

American researchers recently uncovered the link between

splenectomy (removal of the spleen) and GDV. Dogs that

previously underwent surgery to remove their spleen were five

times more likely to have GDV compared to dogs that still had

their spleen. The reason for this was not determined but these

findings suggest that dogs undergoing splenectomy may be

good candidates for stomach tacking surgery, especially if they

have other risk factors such as breed susceptibility.

Conclusions

GDV preventative surgeries are becoming increasingly

common and without a thorough understanding of the causes

of GDV, these surgeries provide the best option for prevention.

“If you own large or giant breeds, then talk to your veterinarian

about stomach tacking surgery. While it doesn’t prevent bloat,

it does stop the stomach from twisting and forming a GDV,”

said Dr. Hung. c

How long have you been a professional handler?

After apprenticing for 10 years I “officially” went

out on my own as a business career 25 years ago.

Why did you choose handling as a career?

I wore many hats in my younger years where

I worked full time in a special needs daycare

for seven years after I graduated, then later as

a secretary for a scaffolding company, in the

evenings I held a part-time position at a theatre.

During these years, on the weekends, I would

apprentice at the shows. It soon became too

difficult to come up with an excuse at my day job

as to why every Friday I had some new ailment.

I took a big leap of faith and quit my job and

decided to try handling as a career. I prefer being

my own boss!

Do you have a favourite breed or group?

Not necessarily although we have always owned

dogs from the sporting, working and hound

groups. I appreciate each breed for what they are

(okay – MOST of them!)

Did you grow up “in dogs”?

We grew up with a Siamese cat! When I was 10

years old, my uncle brought us our first dog – an

Irish Setter puppy. This quickly led the way into

obedience school (for what that was worth with

her!). Our very first dog show as a spectator was

the Northwinds December show, held in the

convention centre. Here we met Larry Kereluke

and Sonny Tougas who introduced us to the Irish

Setter breed club members and it went from

there.

My parents breed of choice was Dobermans

and German Shepherd dogs which we owned

throughout our childhood. My parents were avid

Schutzhund competitors and my sister and I

started in junior handling, moved onto obedience

and then we got hooked on conformation. Gosh,

now that I think of that, we have been involved in

dog sports for the past 40 years!!

What is your favourite bait?

Whatever I can steal from Pat Gignac and Larry

Clark’s bait bowl, because however they cook

their heart and liver, the dogs go crazy for it.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals?

Oh my goodness I am too embarrassed to start

listing them all.

• Keepingthearmbandelasticsonyourarmuntil

they rot off months later (lucky ones give the

power to new ones).

• AlwayssavingaBISarmbandfromthe

weekend.

• EveryTopTenAllBreeddogthatIhaveever

shown, I ask the owners for the last BIS rosette

that we won together. Those dogs show leads

are retired with the end of each campaign.

• WheneverIseearainbowenroutedrivingtoa

show, it is ALWAYS a good luck symbol.

If you could not be a professional handler, what

would you like to do?

I would like to be a professional trophy wife!

Are you a breeder – and do you have dogs of your

own?

Yes I have bred Chilcotin Standard Smooth

Dachshunds since 1988. I co-bred Golden

Retriever litters back in the late ‘80s and took

over the breeding program of Eirene’ Goldens in

2005.

Currently we own two Goldens, a Standard

Smooth and a 14 year old Standard Wire

Dachshund.

What was your worst/best day ever in the ring?

There are so many good days! I guess I would

have to say my very first Best in Show win

which didn’t happen until I was 25 years

old and just out on my own. This was with

Frank Lovey and Merla Thomson American

Staffordshire Terrier, Can Am Ch Sierra’s Maxx

Bandit. Charlie Woodward bestowed this

honour upon us.

My worse day? Not too many come to mind

except maybe this past August when my Golden

special snapped his lead and mounted the

“prime time” winners bitch at the end of the

breed lineup. It took us a while to get

them apart, but no stud services were

owing on that day!

What is your favourite book or movie?

The best book I have read in a long

time is “The Art of Racing In the Rain” a

definite tear jerker for all dog people.

The movie I have watched over and

over… Top Gun.

What is your favourite food?

There isn’t much I don’t like except

anything that is really spicey. Caesar

salad would top the list.

Do you prefer indoor or outdoor shows?

Definitely outdoor shows. Especially

when it rains and then the coated

breeds are on even turf with the

smooth coats!

Do you prefer camping or hotels?

As I stated above, outdoors, camping…

I LOVE the trailer shows and out west

we have such a short season. Pull

the trailers out mid-May and they

are winterized by September long

weekend.

What is your client pet peeve?

Clients that send me dogs that are not

in condition. Whether it be coat, weight,

or mindset and then expect ribbons and

miracles within a very limited time period.

What would you like to see change at dog shows?

A fairer point system that is equal all

across Canada. Currently we are divided

into east versus sest and we need to do

something about the amount of shows

in one area versus another. Show giving

clubs are butting heads against one

another with having too many shows

on the same weekend which in turn is

making our entries decline drastically.

Out west for us, a close show is one

which is within 10 hours driving

distance and when these shows are

spread throughout the provinces on

the same weekend, the clubs feel

the brunt of losing entries. Albertans

have not many choices other than to

drive great distances to attend shows

in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British

Columbia, and many of those fall on the same

weekend because of the geographical mileage

that is allowed.

What is your favourite show?

There are so many shows that are favourites.

Some draw us in because of the membership,

others for their venue, some for the larger

entries, and then there are those shows with the

great concessions!

If you won the lottery tomorrow, would you still handle dogs?

Of course. I might even back a few of the great

dogs I came across, just so I could stay in the

ring! c

Is this your original breed?

I grew up with St Bernards in our family and an aunt who

bred and showed Great Danes.

Why is this the breed for you?

Weimaraners interested me as they are a short coated

breed that required little grooming time and were part of

the Sporting dog family that had high energy levels and

the ability to participate in a variety of dog sports.

Where does your kennel name come from?

So many books and dog people refer to separation

anxiety issues in the breed and my first two weims did

not have this ‘inherent problem’ to the breed as I felt I

taught them to cope, as well as exposed them to a variety

of situations in life that left them well balanced members

of my family. My last name is Kopec so I felt “Koping

Weimaraners” would be a very fitting name for the dogs I

would breed.

Do you have a mentor?

My breed mentor has been well known breeder/

owner/handler/judge, Dr Dana Massey of Win’Weim

Weimaraners in Texas.

Also well respected breeder/owner/handler/judge,

Wendy Maisey has been instrumental in teaching me so

much about dog breeding, training and presentation

Both have been in dogs over 40 years so I have gained

and continue to gain a wealth of knowledge and

perspective through discussions with them.

How do you choose your “stars”?

I spend a lot of time with my litters and expose my

puppies to a wide variety of situations. Throughout

this process I become aware of their temperaments

and adaptability. I start practice stacking my pups at an

early age – not that lots can be determined about their

structure at that time but rather I get them comfortable

with the routine so that when evaluation is critical at

6, 7 & 8 weeks, we are seeing the best of each puppy

and not fussing with them on the table. My mentors

and I watch the movement of the pups as a group and

individually as well as review them stacked on the

table. By 8 weeks of age we have a good indication

of the ‘crème of the crop’. It takes a village to raise

a quality weimarnaner in body and mind, and I am

lucky to surround myself with good friends that help

throughout the exposure and evaluation phase as well

as coowning the exceptional pups with me.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions?

I love having a ‘colour’ theme for the dog I’m showing

and hence my ritual is to wear that colour in some form

on show day. J

Page 148: Canadian Dog Fancier - February 2014

BOHProfile

What is your favorite bait?

My favorite bait is anything that is ‘clean’

for my pockets. I do show Weims and they

are not fussy so anything from cheese

strings, wieners to baked liver/heart are all

‘jackpots’ for them.

Do you have a judge pet peeve?

Excerpt from the CKC Weimaraner standard

Above all, the dog should indicate ability to

work hard in the field.

Temperament: The dog should display a

temperament that is keen, fearless, friendly,

protective, and obedient.

It does not do our breed any justice if

judges overlook the above two statements

and tolerate and award dogs that exhibit

shyness and are fearful in the ring. I

understand being tolerant of minor

shyness in the ring from a puppy but the

adult Weimaraner should never be fearful

in the ring or be apprehensive in general.

Worst day/best day ever in the ring?

Don’t think I’ve had a ‘worst’ day as win or

lose in the ring I know that I’m taking home

a quality dog that I want to own/coown

J and my dogs don’t know that they have

lost as they always trot away from the ring

getting praise and treats from me.

Best day in the ring was at NACA dog show

when True won his first Best in Show, as

this was the first time for me to be the

breeder, owner, and handler!!

What is your favorite dog show?

In Canada, it would have to be the AKC

Summer Classic. Lovely show grounds and

a variety of dog sport events offered at

one location. Great opportunity to socialize

Page 149: Canadian Dog Fancier - February 2014
Page 150: Canadian Dog Fancier - February 2014

148 CANADIAN DOG Fancier

with new and old friends while participating and

watching quality dogs from across the continent.

In the US, I love all breed shows held in a conjunction

with Weim specialty shows. I seem to get great ‘bang

for my buck’ on those trips as I have started and

finished most of my dogs AKC Championships and

performance titles this way. The Del Val show circuit is

one great one for example.

Do you prefer indoor shows or outdoor?

I prefer outdoor shows as then it usually means it is

summer and not only can you enjoy fresh air and big

rings for presentation of our dogs, but there is longer

daylight in the evenings for socializing with friends

on the grounds. Weimaraners generally present

themselves better in outdoor rings too.

For All Your Show Dog Needs

Do you prefer camping or hotels?

I don’t own a trailer so often enjoy the

luxury of staying in hotels with my great

ambassadors of the breed BUT also get to

bench and socialize at a friend’s trailer and

have the camping amenities at the show

grounds. Best of both worlds indeed! J

What would you like to see change at dog shows!

I don’t think we should be seeing more

small shows more often but rather we

need to encourage and support clubs to

host big events less often that will host

a variety of dog sports at one event. The

more spectators can come out and watch

a variety of dog sports at a show the more likely they

will find one that interests them and then can pursue

training and competition. c

JUDGEPROFILE

When did you begin your judging career?

I started judging in 1983 and last year I was awarded

by the Canadian Dog Judges association my 20 Year

All Breed pin.

What do you find the most challenging part of being a judge?

I could say the travel, flights that do not leave

or arrive on time, but more than that is poorly

conditioned dogs that are capable of winning but are

held back because the owner has not done their job

in getting the dog ready for competition. Also people

with males that have not prepared them for a back

end examination.

What do you enjoy the most about judging?

The pleasure of having the new young ones in my ring

for the first time. When I first started showing there

were several heavy-handed judges who frightened

young, new dogs. I made a promise that would never

happen in my ring.

Which breed or group do you enjoy judging the most?

I love them all, but when I am outside in pouring

rain judging sporting, working, herding, or hounds, I

then wish I was inside judging toys, Terriers or non-

sporting.

What was / is your primary breed?

I started in 1968 with an Irish Setter, then owned,

shown, and bred English Setters under the kennel

name Fantail, perm registered. I later married into

Newfoundlands. I still have my English Setters.

Do you like / dislike the use of bait in your ring?

I HATE BAIT! I wish no one would use it, but that will

not happen. I hate it for several reasons. Having

women dig into their chest for the bait is very

unpleasant to see. Having a chunk sticking out the

side of the jaw is equally undignified. Now onto what

they do to the dogs. Giving the dog food right before

we go to see the mouth, has a great possibility we

as judges can get bitten. They want more and not us

looking at their teeth. After we leave the head exam

and go down the neck, shoulders and back while they

are feeding their dogs throws off the smoothness and

makes the dog jump back and forth. When moving

instead of going straight down in back or around with

good extension front and rear, the dog wants food,

sidelines and again is restricted.

What is the most annoying thing that an exhibitor

can do in your ring?

I want each dog to be judged by itself without being

crowded. I do not like dogs being run up on. When I

send a dog down and back I do not want the next in

line crowding the space near me. That is for the dog

coming back from the corner.

JUDGEPROFILE

What is the smartest thing that an exhibitor can do in your ring?

Before coming into my ring, watch a few breeds or

classes before. I rarely ever change my pattern. Keep

the proper distance between you and the dog in front.

Everyone paid the same amount, respect that and

others will. Also if you have dogs in several classes,

let myself or the ring steward know so the ring is not

held up and then it runs much smoother. If by chance

you have moved a dog up or it was originally in the

wrong class, check with the ring steward a least one

to three breeds ahead of time.

What is your home city?

I was born in Scarborough, Ontario but live in

Langley, BC.

What field are/were you employed in outside of dogs?

I worked in the book industry. My first job was at

the Vancouver airport and besides sports team I saw

judges coming and going. When they found out I

was there they would stop by and tell me all about

the dogs they saw and what they did. Wally Bowmen

always took great pleasure telling me stories.

Do you have hobbies or special interests other than judging?

If I still lived at the house I sold last year I would have

said gardening, but my new place has such a small

yard it does not take me long enough to call it a hobby.

I have started to even help my neighbours. Now I am

more focused on rescue and donations for them.

JUDGEPROFILE

What is the funniest thing that you have ever seen in

the ring?

Too many to write about, but last weekend I was doing

a herding vet group and I had a very young boy showing

his German Shepherd. While he set his dog up, I asked

how he was, and his answer surpassed me. “Well I won

in this ring a few minutes ago, and I think I am going to

win again!” So hard not to laugh at that point.

What has been your favourite judging assignment to

date and do you have a dream assignment?

All judging is a pleasure but judging National Specialties

is the greatest honour. I have done several both for

English Setters and other breeds. My dream, or should

I say on my wish list, would be the American Nationals

for Irish Setters, Gordon Setters, Irish Red and White

and Newfoundlands. The reason I stated the American

Nationals is because of the size of the entries.

Do you prefer indoor or outdoor shows?

I love outdoor if the rings are on well-groomed, level

grounds. If it is hot there needs to be enough shade

for the larger classes. When a club holds the show in a

campground or in a field that has hard grass it is very

hard on the toy dogs. If the ground has dips or uneven

areas it is dangerous. So if that is the case indoor is much

better.

What would you like to see change at dog shows?

Changes – far too many shows in one weekend for the

dogs in Canada. Limited shows are incredibly hard on

the dogs, especially ones with coats to be prepared.

Think about it six shows in three days can mean 18 times

getting ready and being shown. If they go to them twice

a month that is too much. I would far prefer to go back to

two shows a month in any area. c

The traditional laboratory white mice and white

rats may be easy to keep and manipulate for

research, but they have never proven to be

a very appropriate model for research into

human diseases. Therapies that seemed effective in

mice translate successfully to humans at a woefully

low rate. But approximately a decade ago, researchers

began to realize that they had a much better animal

model right at their feet – dogs. Not only is the canine

genome surprisingly similar to the human genome,

dogs share our everyday environment as well. And now

researchers have realized that our often inbred and

sometimes geographically isolated dogs suffer some 300

genetic diseases, at least half of which are thought to

be analogous to similar human diseases. As a bonus, the

pedigree of purebred dogs can be traced as easily as the

family tree of humans.

Early Breakthroughs

As far back as the 1970s, the seeds of “one medicine”

were planted when sleep researcher William Dement

of Stanford University learned from another doctor that

research

dogs could suffer a disease that seemed very similar to

human narcolepsy. Dr. Dement contacted local breeders

to find affected canines, and established a colony of

Doberman Pinschers and Labrador Retrievers with the

malady.

Emmanuel Mignon, also a researcher at Stanford’s

School of Medicine, used the colony to determine that

narcolepsy in the dogs resulted from a mutation in a gene

that encodes receptors for hypocretin. This important

neuropeptide is disseminated throughout the brain

stem and spinal cord and regulates arousal, appetite,

and wakefulness. With information on where to look

in humans, researchers found that narcoleptic humans

don’t produce hypocretin at all. They are still working on

a synthetic drug to replace the missing hypocretin or a

breakthrough in the ability to transplant cells in the brain

to actually produce hypocretins.

You’ve probably seen ads for the drug Restasis, used

for the treatment of chronic dry eye in humans. But did

you know that it was a veterinary ophthalmologist who

conducted the research? Dr. Renee Kaswan, a professor at

the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine,

searched for a treatment for dry eye in dogs. The result

was the first prescription that treated dry eye by reducing

tear duct inflammation and allowing production of tears,

rather than simply temporarily lubricating the eye. The

UGA bulldog mascot UGA IV was one of the first dogs to

benefit from the drug. After appropriate trials, Restasis

was approved to treat chronic dry eye in humans.

Dogs could suffer a disease that seemed very similar to

human narcolepsy.

Research Continues and Broadens

Tibetan Terriers suffer a progressive hereditary diseases

called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NFL), with

symptoms appearing most often at age 5 to 7. Affected

dogs have behavioral changes such as become nervous

or aggressive and experience trouble with eyesight.

In humans, the similar affliction Batten disease appears

much earlier in the lifespan, typically between age 5 and

10. The disease brings seizures, blindness, progressive

loss of motor skills.

Martin Katz, PhD, professor of genetics at neuroscience

at the University of Missouri, has been collecting tissue

samples from affected dogs and unaffected littermates

in an attempt to identify the gene responsible. In 2010,

researchers were successful, and a test via cheek swab

is now available so that breeders can eradicate the

disease through careful breeding choices. In humans,

clinical trials for an investigational drug to slow or halt

progression of the disease began in 2011.

Another breed, Briards, is both benefiting from and

contributing to research into a form of blindness.

Congenital stationary night blindness in dogs has a

human counterpart called Leber congenital amaurosis.

The gene responsible for the disease in Briards, RPE65,

was identified at Cornell University in 1998. This has

allowed breeders to begin eradicating the disease. But it

hasn’t stopped there.

Researchers cloned the RPE65 gene from unaffected

dogs, combined it with a viral vector to assist delivery,

and injected it into the subretinal space in the eyes of

some 3-month-old Briard mix puppies known to have the

defective gene. Though blind from birth, three months

later the puppies were able to see, and tests showed they

were producing the correct form of RPE65 on their own.

Recent Breakthroughs

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine

and Emory University School of Medicine received a joint

grant from the AKC Canine Health Foundation to test an

experimental drug for dogs with certain brain tumors.

The tumors, known as spontaneous gliomas in dogs and

glioblastomas in humans, are extremely similar in their

biology. Both have a poor prognosis, and grow back

rapidly after surgery.

Costas Hadjipanayis, MD, PhD, assistant professor of

neurosurgery at Emory, developed the experimental

drug at his Winship Cancer Institute Brain Tumor

Nanotechnology Laboratory. It is the monoclonal

antibody cetuximab, which is attached to an iron-oxide

magnetic nanparticle to make it visible in the brain via

MRI. It targets the overexpressed epidermal growth factor

receptor in canine gliomas, which happens to be the

same receptor as in human glioblastoma.

The first dog enrolled in the pilot study in 2011 at

UGA was a 7-year-old pit bull named Petsy. After Petsy

suffered a seizure, a brain tumor was discovered. Surgery

removed part of the tumor, but could not get it all. So

immediately after surgery and for the following three

days the investigational drug was infused directly into

the tumor via catheters in a process called convection-

enhanced delivery. Blood tests and neurologic tests

demonstrated no toxic effects of the investigational drug.

A follow-up MRI six weeks after surgery showed that the

investigational drug was still present in the remaining

portion of the brain tumor. Another MRI five months after

surgery showed that the tumor had shrunk markedly.

In spring of 2013 (as this was being written), Petsy had

remained seizure-free and in good health. Limited human

trials have begun.

The “one medicine” concept is also attacking another

cancer – osteosarcoma. Unfortunately, osteosarcoma

is fairly common in large-breed dogs, and in humans.

In dogs, the intial occurrence is usually in a leg bone,

and the cancer is so aggressive that amputation is

the treatment of choice. But even when amputation

is followed with chemotherapy, post-surgical survival

averages only a year. There has been no improvement in

this prognosis for decades. The cancer returns, attacking

other bones or metastasizing to the lungs.

Dr. Nicola Mason, of the University of Pennsylvania,

working with the university’s School of Veterinary

Medicine and Advaxis Inc., is conducting a small phase

I study of a vaccine for canine osteosarcoma. Mason

is unusually well-suited to pursue the one medicine

concept, as she has a veterinary degree and a doctorage

in immunology.

In July of 2012, Sasha, an American Bulldog, became the

first of six dogs to receive the modified listeria vaccine.

All the dogs have her2/neu-positive osteosarcoma, a

requirement to be in the study, as the listeria is modified

to include a her2/neu marker. The hope is that while the

dog’s immune cells attack the listeria virus, they will also

learn to recognize and subsequently attack cells that

express the her2/neu marker. The marker distinguishes

cancer cells from healthy cells, making it possible for the

immune system to target remaining cancer cells more

efficiently.

Of the six dogs, only one, which was given only a low

dose of the vaccine, has developed lung metastases.

Sasha and the other four dogs remain health and

apparently cancer-free ten months later.

Other researchers are acknowledging that testing cancer

treatments in mice is largely unproductive because most

of the treatments that work in the mice don’t have the

same positive effects in people. But dogs, like people,

actually suffer from the cancers, rather than being

manipulated to manifest them artificially, plus dogs

are much closer to humans in genetics, biology, and

environment, providing a much more appropriate model.

Testing therapies in dogs can actually sort out those that

show real promise for dogs and humans. And due to the

difference in our lifespans, a treatment that keeps a dog

cancer-free for two years may provide ten to fifteen years

of good health to a human.

The University of Penn study is still enrolling dogs, and

if safety and efficacy of the vaccine continues to be

demonstrated, a larger phase II clinical trial is scheduled

to start in fall 2013. c

Fanciers and breeders can help their breed (and perhaps even themselves or their loved ones) by using the genetic tests available for diseases that strike their breed, and providing samples

or pedigrees to any of the applicable ongoing studies. Breed clubs can donate to the AKC Canine Health Foundation with a directive on what disease they would like investigated. The cross-

species dog-human research concept has already demonstrated notable successes and seems poised to provide many more.
