On the cover ...IONIZED AIRSTREAMEXAIR’s new Super Ion Air Wipe provides a uniform 360° ionized airstream that clamps around a continuously moving part to eliminate static electricity and contaminants. It is ideal for removing dust, particles and shocks on pipe, cable, extruded shapes, hose, wire and more. The Super Ion Wipe uses a small amount of compressed air to entrain high volumes of room air. Two shockless ionizing points powered by a UL listed 5k V power supply fills the airstream with static eliminating ions. That airflow attaches itself to the surface of the material running through the air wipe and is effective for many feet away from where it is mounted. The force of the wiping action can be controlled with an op-tional pressure regulator. EXAIR Corporation

HARMONIC LINEAR DRIVEThe Harmonic Linear Drive™ (HLD) is an innovative linear belt drive solution providing high accuracy with-out the need for a gearhead or brake. Instead of using a fixed belt to move the load, the HLD uses a recirculat-ing belt, folded back upon itself and routed over subtly different diameter pulleys yielding gear reduction by way of the Harmonic Drive Principle, without the backlash of a separate gearhead. The HLD is available in standard stroke lengths from 100mm to 3200mm and equivalent pitch ratios from 2.5mm/rev to 12.5mm/rev. Custom strokes are available. These fully integrat-ed units are shipped with the patented Animatics SmartMotor technology to provide an all-in-one Closed-Loop Brushless Servo Motor, Drive Amplifier, Optical Encoder, I/O Field bus option, belt actuator and bearing support.Animatics Corporation

JET STREAM TOOLINGSeco Tools has announced the availability of its Jetstream Tooling™, a range of high-performance tools designed to de-liver coolant directly at the insert cutting edge for productivity gains. This tooling achieves better chip control along with increased tool life and cutting speed and feed rates across virtually all coolant pres-sures (70 psi-5000 psi) and many material types — specifically titanium alloys, but also nickel-chromium, aluminum and steel alloys, as well as stainless steels. Coolant is applied through the tooling nozzle at high pressure close to the cut-ting edge, cooling the work area and pro-ducing smaller, hard, brittle chips. The high pressure jet then breaks and lifts the chips away from the cutting area without damaging expensive components or tool-ing. Additionally, there is less contact length of the chip on the rack face, which helps to prevent crater wear and improve surface finish.Seco Tools Canada

24-HOUR SCHEDULEno problem for linear guides

Schneider Packaging Equipment Co. Inc. uses maintenance-free DryLin® W linear guides in a custom pack-

aging machine used to box up four cases of plastic bottles per minute, 24 hours a day. The linear guides replace standard slotted brackets and act as a vertical guide for the machine’s grabbing device.

Schneider also uses DryLin linear guides on a pneumatic arm pick-and-place mechanism used to package toner car-tridges. They were integrated due to their resistance to the acidic toner and their low maintenance requirements.

Schneider has more than 35 years of experience in the case-packing and pallet-izing industry. The company focuses on supplying complete end-of-line solutions to its customers, including case-and-tray-packaging equipment and robotic-pallet-izing systems, among others.

Schneider regularly uses the DryLin

range from igus® in both its custom design machines and finished products. Money savings for the company include both the initial purchasing cost and also reduced maintenance costs, as no lubrica-tion is required for the linear systems.

The DryLin W system was developed to promote design flexibility and quick assem-bly in both single- and double-rail config-urations. The rails are made from hard-anodized aluminum and the self-lubricating liner is made from igus’ high-performance plastic iglide® J200, to which the linear guides attribute several benefits — a low co-efficient of friction, dirt- and dust-resistance and a dry-running operation. They deliver long-life in demanding conditions and are available off-the-shelf for a quick delivery. igus has just launched a new version with an adjustable clearance.igus Inc.

MEASURING SENSORSBaumer has expanded its existing line of non-contact AlphaProx inductive analog proximity sensors to include new models with linearized output for a range of in-dustrial measuring applications. Designed to detect metallic objects at ranges up to 16mm, Linearized AlphaProx Sensors can be used to detect changes in position, distance, thickness, weight or pressures. They feature a teach-in function that al-lows the user to adjust the usable measur-ing range and select the direction of the output slope. Offering a resolution of 10 microns, these compact sensors can switch between analog and digital output.Baumer Ltd.

LINEAR MOTORThe LS-4000E tilt-tray and LS-4000CB cross-belt sorters feature linear synchron-ous motor (LSM) technology. The LS-4000’s LSM generates propulsive force via electromagnetic energy, as opposed to mechanical friction between moving parts. This operation reduces energy con-sumption and noise levels, while increas-ing speed, reliability and positioning ac-curacy. FKI Logistics

LINEAR MOTION DRIVEThe Amacoil/Uhing model RG linear drive features mechanical control over travel direction and linear speed eliminat-ing the need for an electronic control sys-tem. Reversal of travel direction is auto-matic regardless of the speed or rotational direction of the shaft. Length of travel is increased or decreased using manually set end stops. Travel speed may also be regu-lated using a manual control on the drive unit without requiring changes to motor speed or gearing. The RG drive is well suited to applications in a variety of auto-mated manufacturing processes in many industries including packaging, convert-ing, textile, wire/cable and automotive. The RG drive is low maintenance requir-ing only light lubrication of the shaft once per month. Available in 17 sizes, the RG drives meet axial thrust requirements from 7 to 800 pounds. Backlash is elimin-ated with specially machined “rolling ring” bearings which maintain constant point-contact with the shaft.Amacoil, Inc.

BALL BUSHINGSThe LG Linear Guide Ball Bushing offers high accuracy, smooth motion and high load capacities. The LG’s rotation preven-tion function, where four rows of circular arc grooves are arranged on the shaft, is included to ensure precise movement. This circular arc groove design allows for increased load carrying capacity. The LG is dimensionally interchangeable with a linear bushing, as the outer tube has the same outer diameter as a linear bushing. Since the outer tube and the shaft are interchangeable, a combination of outer tube and shaft can be easily selected. When the shaft rotates the rotary motion is con-verted to linear motion output.THK

LINEAR ENCODERSThe components used in a vacuum are subjected to especially high demands af-fecting the encoders used in the position-ing task. These linear encoders are avail-able in three product versions, all differing in accuracy, vacuum class, bake-out tem-perature, electrical connection and pro-duction environment. The three encod-ers for vacuum technology include the LIF 481V, the LIP 481V and the LIP 481U. The first two models are for high vacuum to 10-7mbar, the latter is for ultrahigh vacuum up to 10-11mbar. All of the encoders consist of a glass scale, a scanning head and the interface electron-ics (APE) requiring signal conversion to 1 Vpp. The vacuum compatible APE can be placed either inside or outside the vac-uum chamber.Heidenhain Corporation

POSITION SENSORThe highly miniaturized 9600 Series linear motion position sensor features a short 3.8mm mounting terminal and pro-vides an extremely low profile. The over-all height of the sensor is 12.7mm which allows installation in applications with ab-normally tight packaging constraints such as joystick controls, HVAC, robotics, medical, aerospace and industrial auto-mation and controls. Offering precision feedback, the low profile potentiometer features a spring return shaft that follows the surface of the measured assembly. This simplifies the mechanical interface needs of the installation. The 9600 series is constructed of high-temperature plastic materials to provide a highly ruggedized electromechanical device for reliable pos-ition feedback in most applications, from delicate laboratory to harsh environ-ments.BEI Duncan Electronics

LINEAR MOTOR STAGEThe ALS 130H Series linear motor stage provides step-to-step resolution for high precision alignment. The ALS130H fea-tures sub-nanometer resolution, bi-direc-tional repeatability and low-velocity per-formance for test, measurement, in spec-tion and other demanding appli cations. It employs a center-driven, non-cogging lin-ear motor as the driving element. Since the linear motor is a direct-drive device, there is no backlash, windup or “stiction” normally associated with a lead screw or ball-screw drive. The moving magnet track design eliminates the need for cable management and further improves long-term reliability.Aerotech, Inc.

ELECTRIC SCREW ACTUATORSImprove accuracy and productivity

Thiele Technologies, a leader in packaging technology and equipment, recently faced the problem of how to compen-sate for inconsistent bag dimensions on its popular

modu lar bag fi lling and sealing system. Thiele serves customers in the diverse bulk materials processing industries, and the bagging system is designed to measure, fi ll and seal bags con-taining anything from pet food to salt, sugar, dirt, seed, fertilizer or animal feed. Many of Thiele’s customer’s had switched to low-cost bags with irregular dimensions. These irregularly sized bags were slowing the production process, which requires high-speed accuracy to meet manufacturing goals.

Since repeatability is critical to the fi lling and sealing oper-ation, Thiele engineers sought a solution that would increase accuracy, fl exibility and productivity for packagers. They found their solution in four custom electric screw linear actuators from Tolomatic that precisely position incoming empty bags. The bagging system now automatically compensates for variations in bag dimensions and eliminates manual setup when changing bag sizes.Tolomatic

CIRCLE NO. 90 ON READER REPLY CARD

The Thiele modular bagging system is designed to fi ll and seal a wide range of materials and bag sizes. Two ganged Tolomatic actuators center the bags in the staging

trays while two other actuators adjust the vertical position.

The standard Tolomatic B3S Series of rodless electric linear actuators handles heavy and high-moment loads with con-sistent, smooth operation. It can be modifi ed for a variety of special applications.

When changing bag sizes, the operator only has to push a but-ton instead of manually adjusting the bag trays.

MICROMOTORSThe application field for EC micromotors is growing while the space available for them is decreasing. A high density per-formance and outstanding efficiency are extremely important, especially for mo-tors less than 20mm in diameter. These are two criteria that the new EC motors meet. The EC 10 has an output of 8 watts and reaches a maximum permissible speed of 80,000 min-1. The EC 13 is available in two versions, a short one of 6 watt as-signed power rating and a longer one of 12 watts. Both are designed for a max-imum permissible speed of 50,000 min-1. All motors are available with or without Hall sensors.Electromate Industrial Sales Ltd.

MOTOR DISCONNECT SWITCHThe new Schneider Electric Square D® brand MD50 motor disconnect receptacle switch provides reliable, safe and quick power connections for motors. IEC 60309-compliant technology helps the MD50 in-crease plant floor safety by making it virtu-ally impossible to plug in a power receptacle having different voltage and ampere rat-ings. A mechanical interlock requires the operator to insert a plug before power can be turned on and to turn power off before the plug can be removed. Pre-wired for quick and easy installation, the MD50 is appropriate for applications like food pro-cessing, packaging, automotive assembly, material handling/conveyance, textiles, mining, petrochemical refining and pulp/paper manufacturing.Schneider Electric
