Facts about BlowersEnergy conscious plants might think a blower to be a better choice due to its slightly lower electrical consumption compared to a compressor. In reality, a blower is an expensive capital expenditure that requires frequent downtime and costly maintenance of fi lters, belts and bearings. Here are some important facts:

Filters must be replaced every one to three months.

Belts must be replaced every three to six months.

Typical bearing replacement is at least once a year at a cost near $1000.

Blower bearings wear out quickly due • to the high speeds (17-20,000 RPM) required to generate eff ective airfl ows.

Poorly designed seals that allow • dirt and moisture infi ltration and environments above 125°F decrease the one year bearing life.

Many bearings can not be replaced in • the fi eld, resulting in downtime to send the assembly back to the manufacturer.

Blowers take up a lot of space and often produce sound levels that exceed OSHA noise level exposure requirements. Air volume and velocity are often diffi cult to control since mechanical adjustments are required.

To discuss an application, contact:

EXAIR Corporation11510 Goldcoast DriveCincinnati, Ohio 45249-1621(800) 903-9247Fax: (513) 671-3363email: [email protected]/16/423.htm

Compare these BlowoffsTh ere are a variety of ways to blow the water from the bottles shown in the photo below, but which method is best? To decide, we ran a comparison test on the same application using four diff erent blowoff methods: drilled pipe, fl at air nozzles, Super Air Knife (each using compressed air as a power source), and a blower supplied air knife (using an electric motor as a power source). Each system consisted of two twelve inch long air knives. Th e following comparison proves that the EXAIR Super Air Knife is the best choice for your blowoff , cooling or drying application.

Th e goal for each of the blowoff choices was to use the least amount of air possible to get the job done (lowest energy and noise level). Th e compressed air pressure required was 60 PSIG which provided adequate velocity to blow the water off . Th e blower used had a ten horsepower motor and was a centrifugal type blower at 18,000 RPM. Th e table at the bottom of the page summarizes the overall performance. Since your actual part may have an odd confi guration, holes or sharp edges, we took sound level measurements in free air (no impinging surface).

Drilled PipeTh is common blowoff is very inexpensive and easy to make. For this test, we used (2) drilled pipes, each with (25) 1/16” diameter holes on 1/2” centers. As shown in the test results below, the drilled pipe performed poorly. Th e initial cost of the drilled pipe is overshadowed by its high energy use. Th e holes are easily blocked and the noise level is excessive - both of which violate OSHA requirements. Velocity across the entire length was very inconsistent with spikes of air and numerous dead spots.

Flat Air NozzlesAs shown below, this inexpensive air nozzle was the worst performer. It is available in plastic, aluminum and stainless steel from several manufacturers. Th e fl at air nozzle provides some entrainment, but suff ers from many of the same problems as the drilled pipe. Operating cost and noise level are both high. Some manufacturers off er fl at air nozzles where the holes can be blocked - an OSHA violation. Velocity was inconsistent with spikes of air.

EXAIR Super Air KnifeTh e Super Air Knife did an exceptional job of removing the moisture on one pass due to the uniformity of the laminar airfl ow. Th e sound level was extremely low. For this application, energy use was slightly higher than the blower but can be less than the blower if cycling on and off is possible. Safe operation is not an issue since the Super Air Knife can not be dead-ended. Maintenance costs are low since there are no moving parts to wear out.

The Super Air Knife is the low cost way to blowoff, dry, clean and cool.

If you think compressed air is too expensive and noisy - read this. The facts will surprise you!

The Truth About Compressed Air!

Blower Air KnifeTh e blower proved to be an expensive, noisy option. As noted below, the purchase price is high. Operating cost was considerably lower than the drilled pipe and fl at air nozzle, but was comparable to EXAIR’s Super Air Knife. Th e large blower with its two 3” (8cm) diameter hoses requires signifi cant mounting space compared to the others. Noise level was high at 90 dBA. Th ere was no option for cycling it on and off to conserve energy like the other blowoff s. Costly bearing and fi lter maintenance along with downtime were also negative factors.

by Bruce Boyers

Many injection moulders are adopting new technology to drive down resin drying times

for faster start-up, increased throughput and overall energy savings.

A problem for the injection moulding industry has always been the drying of hygroscopic resins, as added moisture can result in product defects. Hygroscopic resins have a natural attraction to water molecules, causing them to take up and retain water as soon as they are exposed to humid air. These resins include the partially hygroscopic such as ABS, acetal, polycarbonate, PBT, LCP, and some TPOs, TPEs, and TPUs and range to highly problematic difficult-to-dry materi-als such as bottle-grade PET and Nylon.

For many years, desiccant dryers have been the norm for resin drying, and facili-ties have had to live with drying times of two to four hours per load. However, in today’s highly competitive injection moulding market, finding new methods to perform work faster and at less cost while still maintaining quality is para-mount. The latest target in this drive for efficiency: the application of new tech-nologies that reduce resin drying times to 30 minutes or less for faster production start-up, increased throughput or reduced energy costs.

”Very often, if we have to use a desic-cating dryer, the mould will be all ready to go and they’ll still have to have the machine sit for another couple of hours waiting for the plastic to fully dry,” said Mike Torpey, Vice President and General Manager of W.K. Hillquist Plastic Injection Molding. “It’s probably an additional hour’s time spent every time we change materials to clean the desiccat-ing dryers, which means that every time we change, the press is not running an additional hour.”

Other traditional methods fared badly also as regards drying times. Tyco Electronics, a manufacturer of electronic connectors for the auto industry, utilizes injection moulding in the manufacture of electronic connector housings. For its regrind process, Tyco was using conven-tional dryers and regrind blenders. Not only was this method time-consuming requiring five to seven hours drying time — but ineffective at removing moisture as well. “Our regrind process was picking up moisture in the blending process, so it had to be re-dried using a conventional dryer,” said Michael Nordahl, Tyco’s Chief Engineer.

Many facilities are now discovering advanced methodology that brings hygro-scopic resin drying times down to as little as 30 minutes, and Tyco has been among these. “I would say on average we’ve saved five to seven hours per load,” Nordahl says. “Not only are our initial start-ups faster, but each re-start is easier too.”

W.K. Hillquists’s Mike Torpey has also found this technology extremely beneficial. “When we’re starting a new job, it certain-ly allows us to get the jobs running at least a couple of hours ahead of time because we don’t have to pre-dry the material from two to four hours,” he said. “So on start-ups we definitely see at least a couple of hours savings each time we run the job.”

Both Torpey and Nordahl are utilizing the Speedryer from Canam Manufactured Products. The dryer uses the rapid ap-plication of heat to increase the vapour pressure inside plastic pellets and to force entapped moisture to the pellet surface. A counter flow of heated air strips the mois-ture from the pellet and transports it away to the atmosphere leaving dry plastic.

Nordahl has also found this method

to be far more effective as regards stress on material and moisture removal. “The application of the Speedryer corrected our moisture problem improving material degradation and increased our processing window, particularly on nylons,” he said.

”We’ve basically tried many kinds of plastics with them and we’ve had very good success with most materials,” Torpey said.

Another benefit has been energy sav-ings – this technology utilizes about 25 percent of the energy normally required for desiccant dryers. “They are extremely more energy-efficient than a desiccant dryer because of the lack of moving parts and blowers and big heater banks,” said

Torpey. “The cost per hour to dry the plastic is very reasonable.”

These hopper dryers mount right on the feed throat, and Torpey has found the smaller footprint and reduction in mechanical complexity has meant easier maintenance. “They’re small,” he re-ported, “We don’t have to have this monstrous dryer on the floor taking floor space; basically it mounts right on top of the machine. They are easy to set up on the machines and also very easy to clean. They are very trouble-free running. We’ve found that the overall maintenance cost is very inexpensive.”Canam Manufactured Products Inc.

PUMP TORQUE LIMITERParker Hannifin has introduced an op-tional torque limiter for 45 – 140 cc/rev model P1/PD series pumps to benefit customers who need automatic torque limiting for their mobile and industrial applications. This allows the use of small-er prime movers, resulting in more effi-cient use of fuel or electricity. The torque limiter adjusts flow in the circuit to keep the prime mover from stalling under heavy loads. To accomplish this, the torque limiter control monitors both pressure and displacement as measured by the pump’s hanger angle. It is a single spring unit that works with the Parker compensator, a ventable pressure limiter or a load sensing or remote venting cir-cuit. Parker Hannifin

LIQUID TIGHT FITTINGSThe Heyco-Flex™ III Liquid Tight Fit-tings and Flexible Tubing is designed for quick, easy and permanent assembly be-tween the tubing and fittings so they can be used in both wet and dry applications. They resist corrosion, oil, weak acids, and salt water. No threading of the tube is re-quired by installation which eliminates the possibility of cutting the tubing and creating leak paths. The fittings and tub-ing are flame retardant, non-toxic and UV resistant. They are rated for 3R ap-plications, are made of nylon material and provide maximum flexibility for use in tight quarters. Mounting brackets are available.Heyco Products, Inc.

FLAPGATE AIRLOCKSThese Double Flapgate Airlock Valves are engineered and manufactured for ex-treme operating environments or highly abrasive media. The airlocks are specific-ally designed to control the rate of ma-terials flow through a system and at the same time preventing air leakage by iso-lating the processing system’s pressures. Typical applications include: batch feed-ing, mixing, drying, pneumatic convey-ing, materials recovery, and dust collec-tion. The airlock valves are built for applications involving elevated temper-atures, highly abrasive products, wide pressure differentials, irregularly shaped products or oversized materials.Wm. M. FITTINGSClick-N-Seal™ connection fittings suit a wide range of fluid connection types. Pre-viously available for flared and ferrule connections, the company now offers the same torque assurance for barbed fluid connections. The reusable fittings pro-vide objective feedback to installers, pre-venting excess torque that can lead to leaks and flow problems. The pre-assem-bled Click-N-Seal prevents the fitting over or under-tightening in IVD and sci-entific equipment. When the correct torque is reached, the reusable Click-N-Seal produces a click the installer can feel and hear, and physically prevents tighten-ing beyond that point.Diba Industries

FULL FLANGE SYSTEMThe Full Flange System makes Code 61 and Code 62 hydraulic connections faster and easier to assemble because of a pat-ent-pending design that enables the flange to be attached to a hose after the fitting has been crimped on. Parker’s new one-piece full flange connection is positioned on the fitting after it has been crimped, and is held in place by a high-tensile stain-less steel retaining ring. Once the flange engages the retaining ring, the flange is held securely in place, and this makes in-stallation to the port a cinch because you’re not fumbling with two flange halves. The system gives end-users the ability to route hoses through tight spaces where assemblies with the flange end al-ready attached would not fit. It can also be used repeatedly because the flange is not permanently locked on the fitting.Parker Hannifin Corporation

BUTTERFLY VALVEThe Type 567 Butterfly Valve is available in large diameter sizes up to 12 inches. The new corrosion-risk valve incorpor-ates a double eccentric operating princi-ple that provides improved wear and eas-ier operation over traditional eccentric style butterfly valves. Typical applications include industrial water treatment, pot-able water treatment, swimming pools, water parks and waste water systems in such industries as chemical, chemical dis-tribution, electroplating and power plants. Key to the valve’s double eccentric disc design is the off-centre shaft that allows the disc to completely disengage from the disc seal even when partially open. This reduces seal friction and improves seal wear characteristics and provides better protection against pressure surges.GF Piping Systems
