Introduction on Biology

Page 4: Cancer (Lung)

What is Cancer?• Cancer is a disease where cells grow out of control and invade and destroy

normal cells

Page 5: Cancer (Lung)

What is Lung Cancer?• Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that start off in

one or both lungs; usually in the cells that line the air passages. The abnormal cells do not develop into healthy lung tissue, they divide rapidly and form tumors.

Page 6: Cancer (Lung)

Epidemiology • Lung cancer is the most common cancer in men worldwide with 33.8 per

100,000, and • it is the fourth most frequent cancer in women (13.5 per 100,000)• Globally, lung cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer,

with 1.38 million deaths recorded in 2008

Page 7: Cancer (Lung)

Symptoms of Lung Cancer?• A cough that does not go away or gets worse.• Coughing up blood or rust-colored sputum (spit or phlegm)• Chest pain that is often worse with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing.• Hoarseness.• Weight loss and loss of appetite.• Shortness of breath.• Feeling tired or weak.

Page 8: Cancer (Lung)

• Smoking• Exposure to Cancer-causing agents• Viral (i.e. herpes, HPV, mononucleosis) create an opportunistic• Cellular Mutations Genetics & Hormone exposure Occupation and

Environment Factors• Social and Psychological Factors• Chemicals in Food• environment• Medical Factors

Risk Factors of Lung Cancer?

Risk Factors of Lung Cancer?

Diagnosis• Imaging tests. An X-ray image

of your lungs may reveal an abnormal mass or nodule

• Sputum cytology• Tissue sample (biopsy)

Page 11: Cancer (Lung)

Treatment• Surgery• Chemotherapy• Radiation Therapy

Page 12: Cancer (Lung)

Treatment

1- Wedge Resection 2- Lobectomy 3- Pneumonectomy

1- Surgery

A wedge resection is a surgical procedure during which the surgeon removes a small, wedge-shaped portion of the lung containing the cancerous cells along with healthy tissue that surrounds the area.

pulmonary lobectomy, it is a common surgical procedure that removes one lobe of the lung that contains cancerous cells.

A pneumonectomy (or pneumectomy) is a surgical procedure to remove a lung.

Page 13: Cancer (Lung)

Treatment2- Radiation Therapy

• If you have lung cancer your Doctor may recommend you Radiation Therapy

• Radiation Therapy is a local treatment, give high energy reys to kill or shrink cancer cells or tumor

Page 14: Cancer (Lung)

Treatment3- Chemotherapy

• Chemotherapy (also called chemo) is systemic treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells.

• Side Effects Include:– Fatigue. Fatigue is feeling tired or exhausted almost all the time– Pain– Mouth and throat sores– Diarrhea– Nausea and vomiting– Constipation– Blood disorders– Nervous system effects– Hair Loss

Page 15: Cancer (Lung)

Prevention of Lung Cancer?• Reachers theorise 90% of all lung cancers could be avoided by not

smoking• Changing lifestyle or eating habits.• Avoiding things known to cause cancer.• Taking medicines to treat a precancerous condition or to keep cancer from

starting.
