NEIGHBORS LUNCH

On Wednesday, September 21, Neighbors Lunch will resume monthly programs at noon at the Greater Hans-ville Community Center. Once again our local North

Kitsap Fire and Rescue team will grill hamburgers to serve us...always a nice treat. Michèle Laboda will give a talk about Fire Safety in our homes. As most of you know this lunch is open to anyone interested in coming and dining with your neigh-bors. It’s also a good way to get acquainted if you are new in the area. Other monthes, Lunch is a half sandwich, soup and a cookie plus coffee, for $6. Please contact Judy Hutchinson at 360-638-2871 if you plan to attend so we can have enough food for all.

We have already planned all the programs for the remainder of 2016 as follows:1) September: North Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

2) October: Back by popular demand, our funny, funny come-dian…members of the community have donated the money to bring back this great show with new material…be sure to come and enjoy it.

3) November: Finds us once again honoring Hansville vet-erans. We will provide a free lunch for any veteran who has served our country to show our appreciation for your service. Just please let us know you are coming so we have enough food for all…call Judy as noted above. Also, the U.S. Naval Underseas Museum will talk about their recently developed exhibit on the Thresher submarine that sunk. It will prove to be an interesting program I assure you.

4) Traditionally, we have a musical program in December. This year a men’s a cappella choir will harmonize a program including some Christmas carols. Our local Clark Parsons has arranged this melodic experience for us. Wear your Santa hat and come sing along with us.

FLOTSAM & JETSAM GARDEN CLUB

Sam Decker Speaking on Aroids

If you are wondering what Aroids are, they are the common name for mem-bers of the Araceae family of plants,

sometimes known as the Philodendron or Arum family. Some live in the rainforest and others in cooler climates. Ones we are familiar with in our area are skunk cabbage and Jack in the Pulpit. The occasionally inflorescence, sometimes referred to as a “flower”, is a distinguishing feature of all Aroids. Our authority on Aroids is Sam Decker. He is an amazing, young, twelve-year old botanist. He speaks with such a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. You will learn a great deal about Aroids. You can’t help but be really impressed with this young fellow. Flotsam & Jetsam Garden Club begins at 9:00 am at the Great-er Hansville Community Center with coffee and refreshments. 9:30-10:15 am is the business meeting. The featured program begins 10:45 am. Guests are always welcome.

HANSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The next meeting of the Hansville Historical Society will meet as usual on the third Friday of the month, Septem-ber 16, at 10:00 am, in the Greater Hansville Community

Center. We are making progress in archiving our materials with a super committee doing the hard work. Our current projects are researching the development of farms in the local area and also the experiences residents of Hansville had dur-ing World War II. Even if those experiences took place else-where. Last month, we heard about a woman who chose to join the Marine Corps during World War II. We have been given letters and photos of those experiences for our collection. Her daughter, Sue Ahrens, a local resident has shared those with us. We are also in the process of interviewing other commu-nity members so if you have a story to share, contact Lois Lee at 360-638-1973. Other programs we plan to share include meeting with the Kitsap Historical Society who will tour the Point No Point Lighthouse on September 16. The fee to join our Society is $15 a year for all the family. If you have not yet seen our latest product form, come to a meeting and ask to review People of North Kitsap Peninsula, a book written by our members, complete with historic photographs and a very interesting story of how the local area came to be populated. Check out our website at: Hansvillehistory.org.

NOT JUST FOR ANGLERS!

What was feared to be a non-season in Areas 9 & 10 actually turned out to be quite productive for hatchery Chi-

nook. We were able to serve salmon to around 120 Members and their families at our Annual Meeting.

The future of Coho looks excellent, as evidenced by the num-ber of large hook-noses that were caught and released during the Chinook season. For the first time in my memory, Coho is closed in Areas 9 & 10 to compensate for last year’s poor con-ditions. Ocean conditions have improved dramatically in favor of fish, and they are wolfing down the bait and growing every day! Always check current postings at WDFW.WA.GOV before you go out to harvest any type of marine life.

The next meeting of the North Kitsap Puget Sound Anglers will be September 14 at the Driftwood Key Clubhouse. Dinner (salmon fettuccine!) at 6:00 pm, with meeting and program at 7:00 pm.

New members are always welcome. Experienced sailor or new to the sport, you are welcome in our group. More info available, call Bruce Cosacchi 360-638-2074 or Jim Morrison 360-638-2705.

3RD Annual Chili Cook-Offare welcome too). This event is free, but voting is done via cash donations to the maker of your favorite chili. Remember this year all donations will go to the Eglon Improvement Club. The Eglon Improvement Club was established to oversee the care of the Eglon Community, to preserve the common prop-erties and to ensure the continuation of traditional events and activities. As many of you know, in the center of the commu-nity stands the Eglon Schoolhouse, which was built in 1922 and has been the heart of the community ever since.

The members of the Eglon Improvement Club are dedicated to the preservation of this wonderfully-maintained example of the classic two-room schoolhouse from the early 1920s. For some time now it has been apparent that the building is not accessible to all residents and visitors. The foremost goal at this time is to provide a handicapped access ramp insuring that all who come to events at the Schoolhouse are able to enter safely. Donations from the Chili Cook-off will help make that goal much closer to becoming a reality for Eglon. We will have teams from Hansville Helping Hands, the Eglon Improvement Club, the Greater Hansville Community Center and the defending champions - the North Kitsap Puget Sound Anglers. All have promised their very best chili. You are wel-come to bring your own favorite beverage to help you fully enjoy the various chili samples that will be offered. Here is the agenda for the evening: 6:00 – 7:00 pm: Chili sampling and voting7:00 – 7:30 pm: Count the votes. Eat cake and cookies7:30 pm: Announce the standings and present awards8:00 pm: Cleanup Hope to see you at the Community Center for a fun-filled evening.

HANSVILLE HELPING HANDS“The mission of the Hansville Helping Hands, a Washington State Nonprofit cor-poration, is to assist in serving the needs of our community and neighbors, and to continue to manage the Hansville Cemetery in a manner that maintains the spirit

and heart of the community”

My mom always said, “When you grow up and have time, always use that time to help others.” I am so lucky to live in a community that has this same ethic!

We are still reeling in the wonderful results on our July Garden tour. Special thanks to Hansville Grocery and Savage Plants for selling our tickets for us!

So what were we up to in August besides witnessing the ant-lers peaking out of the heads of our local teenage deer wan-dering the neighborhood? The members of HHH and Cem-etery helped out with the Greater Hansville Rummage sale - even though it is not an official thing we do, mind you. Our members personally donated foods to support the workers for several days in August. Our goal was to prevent any weight loss due to over working. Giggle!

In September, we are switching gears to work in the cemetery garden, participate in the September 24 Chili Cook-off and get our recipes updated for the bake sale on November 12 at Driftwood Key Clubhouse which is holding a huge Craft Fair at that time.

We are actively seeking homes for our “Annual Holiday Home Tour” fundraiser the second Saturday in December. If you are interested in joining our tour, please email me at [email protected]. Also, If you are interested in helping with the cem-etery weeding/planting/cleanup parties please give Jo Nelson a call at 360-638-0000.

Our next meeting is September 28, at 2:00 pm in the Drift-wood Keys Clubhouse. Love to see you there!

The more the merrier!

NKF&R NEWSBy Michèle Laboda

NEW MISSION FOR OLD BOAT: With NKF&R’s new grant-funded fire-rescue boat in service at the Port of Kingston Marina, the district’s older boat has been relo-

cated to Hood Canal. The 29’ vessel, built by Lifetimer, entered service in 2002. Through an interagency agreement with Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue, the fire-rescue boat will be responding from Port Ludlow Marina to incidents in both Kitsap and Jef-ferson Counties. CONGRATULATIONS: In ceremonies at the end of July, NKF&R members celebrated the hiring of two firefighters and the promotion of three others. Sean Moran was promoted to Assistant Chief for Training and Support Services. To fill the vacancy created by Moran’s promotion, Ardyl Abrigo was named C-Shift Battalion Chief. Mark Cooney is our newest lieutenant and, after a stint as an instructor in the upcoming Volunteer-Intern Firefighting Academy, will serve on C-Shift. Kaleb Murray and Janelle Randles, graduates of the district’s highly-regarded Volunteer Intern Program, came out on top of our testing process to earn job offers. They have been assigned to B-Shift and A-Shift, respectively. See pictures and learn more about these folks on the Press Releases page of our web site at www.nkfr.org/news/press-releases/. And, if you happen to run into any of them around town, shake their hand; they’ve worked hard for these achievements. SEPTEMBER 11 BREAKFAST: Take the opportunity to remember the victims of the September 11 attacks by joining us for a community breakfast on Sunday, September 11 from 8:00 – 11:00 am at our headquarters fire station near Kingston. There is no charge for the meal, but donations will be accepted to benefit the Firefighters’ Community Assistance Fund.

Photo Above: At July ceremonies, NKF&R’s newly-hired and promoted personnel were recognized. HELP SUPPORT STUDENTS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES:

DINE OUT ON SEPTEMBER 8

North Kitsap Schools Foundation is having its most popular event of the year, Dine Out for NK Schools, on Thursday, September 8. This is the fifth year for the

fundraiser, which invites community members to dine out all day at participating eateries in Kingston, Suquamish and Poulsbo. Restaurants donate a portion of the day’s proceeds to the foundation.

North Kitsap Schools Foundation is a non-profit organiza-tion that brings the community together to help fund the best possible learning opportunities for all North Kitsap stu-dents. During the past 4 years, NKSF has awarded more than $170,000 in grants to NKSD teachers and schools to provide enriched learning for our students. Nearly $80,000 during 2015-2016 purchased technology, educational materials, soft-ware, field trips and teacher training to support Science, CTE, Social Studies, Reading, Math and Music/Art instruction, to name a few. Thanks to community support and partnerships with NKSF, KHS AP Chemistry classes used new, hand-held computers to gather and graph data during experiments. In-coming 6th graders to KMS will explore hands-on science and technology at the Pacific Science Center on a Fall field trip. Gordon Elementary teachers received training in techniques to help students self-manage emotions and problem solve social situations.

Be part of the community-wide effort to support an excep-tional education for NK students. Dine out on September 8! For a complete list of participating restaurants in North Kitsap and for more information on ways to support the North Kitsap Schools Foundation, visit www.nkschoolsfoundation.org.

A THANK YOU TO HANSVILLE GOOD SAMARITANS

From a Fallen Kingston Bicyclist

On July 27, I had a very nasty fall off my bike while riding on Hood Canal Drive in the Hansville area. At the time I did not think my injuries were that severe. But in fact,

I had a fractured shoulder and two lacerations that required surgery to clean. I spent 4 days in the Harborview Hospital. (Please note, I am on my way to a full recovery.) Two good Samaritans from the Hansville area saw me fall. They appreciated much better than I did the severity of my injuries. One woman called her husband who came with his pickup truck and took me to my home in Kingston from which I got the treatment I needed. If these kind people had not tak-en the time to help me - my situation might have ended up much worse.

I did not have the presence of mind at the time of the crash to even get their names so that I could properly thank them. Hopefully, by publishing this small article in the Greater Hans-ville Log newsletter - expressing my deep gratitude for their kindness, they will see this. Thank you. Ron LawsonKingston, WA 98346

HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE

Have you been thinking about volun-teering for the Hansville Greenway? We have just the job you. We have

a need for three more stewards! The Gre-enway is divided into 17 stewardship areas with a volunteer steward assigned to each area. The primary role of an area steward is

to periodically monitor their assigned area for appropriate visi-tor use, trail conditions, any needed trail maintenance, wildlife presence, any safety hazards, condition of plants and habitat, downed trees or limbs, and any vandalism. Stewards are encour-aged to monitor their area at least once a month and provide a report to the stewardship manager. It’s from these reports that the trail maintenance projects are prioritized. It’s a fun and inter-esting way to get to know the Greenway areas throughout the year. For more information about being a steward go to hansvil-legreenway.org and click on Library where you will find the Stew-ardship manual.

If you would prefer to join us for periodic trail maintenance projects we could use your help with that as well. We will be happy to put you on a contact list to inform you of the various projects when we need help. You can decide when and if you want to participate. It’s also a good way learn more about our wonderful trail system.

Please come and join us at the next Greenway meeting on October 6 at 7:00 pm located in the Greater Hansville Community Center. There are no dues required to become a member. Check us out on our website, hansvillegreenway.org or visit us on Facebook.

EGLON COMMUNITY NEWSBy Jackie Holbrook

We’ll be closing out our summer activities in Eglon on Monday, September 5, with a potluck at the beach in celebration of Labor Day. We’ll get started at 1:00 pm . The coffee will be hot, the juice cold and all you need to do is to bring along a food item to share, your own plates and silverware. Pat and Gene DuVall will be hosting the gathering and we’d love

to fill the picnic area with lots of neighbors, family and friends. We won’t be officially at the beach for another 9 months so you won’t want to miss out on this one. Our next community meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 28, in the Schoolhouse at 7:30 pm. We’ll be making plans for our traditional fall and winter events. After we’re done with business there will coffee, tea and dessert.

We as a community are being honored on Saturday, September 24, at the 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off held in the Greater Hansville Community Center at Buck Lake. There will be four teams competing for the bragging rights of having the best tasting chili in the area. The event is free except for voting which is done by “donation/cash” votes after tasting the four entries. One of the teams will be the Eglon Chili Cooks so you won’t want to miss this. Each year the GHCC chooses a group to benefit from this fundraising event and this year they have decided to dedicate the funds to the Eglon Improvement Club, to go towards our Handicapped Access Project at the Schoolhouse. We are humbled by their interest in helping us with this extensive project. We’d love to see you there! The Chili Cook-Off begins at 6:30 pm. Those of us who attended last year really enjoyed the playful competition and fes-tive setting for the evening. Bring family members of all ages and a neighbor or two. We’d love to have a wonderful, appreciative showing of Eglon residents in attendance.

STUMP GRINDINGANY STUMP - ANY WHERE

Field and Forest Services, Inc.360-638-1768

NOT SO BOTANICALBy Roland Malan, Buck Lake Native Plant Garden

In a recent article about the Native Garden, I highlighted how fortunate the Garden is to have the interest, and willingness of the people we live with here. How they routinely give hours to maintaining the garden and the enthusiasm they show in what they do for the community (without any monetary reward – just liking the people they work with and being proud of

the results of their labors). And when you see how wonderful the outcome is; breathtaking.

But underneath this wonderful arrangement, there lies a mantra that seems to permeate this community. The Buck Lake Native Plant Garden is just one of nine organizations that work selflessly in their contribution to making this area a good place to be. How organized and efficient these folk are in their commitment.

Buck Lake Garden has up to 20 people that work in the Garden on garden days based on their availability. Three hours total in the garden; working, a little teaching session, a cookie/brownie, a cup of coffee and they are off to other things – all with the good feeling that they have contributed. And I would suggest that something like that happens in the other eight organizations. But there is always a time in the process when monetary issues come up that could upset the progress of the organization. I’ll use Buck Lake as an example, because I am familiar with its growth. In the past ten years, we had the property excavated to change a very tough terrain to the setting for the Garden, we had an irrigation system installed, we had drainage problems to fix, and we had pathways developed. These jobs required heavy equipment and people who know what they are doing. And yet, no one was solicited for financial assistance.

It wasn’t necessary. Members of the steering committee contributed, there were contributions from the people through the Greater Hansville Log, as well as from the Greater Hansville Community Center, the Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club, and gracious reductions in the prices asked by the contractors allowed those projects to be completed.

Pretty nice system this community has established.

And the story goes on. Recently a member of the steering com-mittee was approached by a Boy Scout leader who inquired about helping a Scout to earn an Eagle Scout Badge. If this works out, there will be a new path developed around the upper edge of the garden, adjacent to the rain garden.

The point here isn’t the path (which had been on our back burner), but rather the willingness to volunteer building it.

Isn’t it great to live in this kind of community?

SHARING A NAMEBy Susan Fowler

One of the most common questions we get as docents volunteering at the Point No Point light-house is; how did Point No Point get its name? A

couple of reasons are given. The first is that when Captain Charles Wilkes was exploring the Puget Sound area the point of land where the lighthouse now stands appeared to be a likely anchorage spot but as his ship rose and fell on the water the point would disappear from view as it was so low. Wilkes determined that he would need to find a more suitable place to anchor.

Another story is that Captain Wilkes named Point No Point after a place of the same name located on the bank of the Hudson River in New York. Since he was born in New York City and spent many years in naval work that took him throughout the area he may very well have been familiar with Point No Point that sat at the foot of the Palisades cliffs lining the Hudson River near Tarrytown, New York.

There are actually many Point No Points in existance. The nearest to us is on the southwest shore of Vancouver Is-land, B.C. about 40 miles from Victoria. Described as a “secondary” point of land it is presently the site of a luxury cabin resort named Point No Point Resort.

Across the United States on Chesapeake Bay sits another Point No Point lighthouse near the entrance to the Po-tomac River. Built of brick and wood in 1905 about two miles from Marylands’ shore it housed a 4th order Fresnel lense like our lighthouse but was fully automated in 1938. Sadly, the octagonal-shaped lighthouse is today in very poor condition.

Travelling north to New Jersey there is a Point No Point on the shore of the Passaic River. Nearby, the Point No Point swing bridge carries railroad traffic across the river in this busy industrial area.

Now going on to Minnesota and Saint Frontenac State Park on Lake Pepin (actually part of the Mississippi River) there is another Point No Point that is a geographical at-traction in the park.

So, our little lighthouse shares a name with several other places on various bodies of water including a sister light-house that badly needs to find its own group of Friends before it’s too late.
