Reasons to Rejoice
This weekend we celebrate Gaudate, or Rejoice, Sunday. Gaudate is the Latin translation of the first word of the entrance antiphon, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice” (Phil 4:4). I have acouple of reasons to rejoice after this past week. I’m happy for the Advent revival and a special Mass and lunch with Bishop Duca.
This past week we had our cluster revival with Fr. Tony Ricard. Many of our parishioners braved the chilly weather to hear Fr. Tony’s inspiring words, and he was happy to see so many of you inattendance. Fr. Tony regaled us with stories that made the church resound with laughter.
Fr. Tony challenged us to live Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40) How many people didn’trecognize Jesus when He first came? For example, if the scholars of the law knew about the twelve year old who was speaking to them in the Temple, they wouldn’t have let Him out of their sight. Hesummarized his message in one sentence, “Better to treat every child as if Jesus has come back again, then to stand at the judgment seat and find out you treated Jesus like nobody.”
Every year we have a Mass and lunch with the staffs from other Catholic churches in our deanery. This year Bishop Duca joined us, and I found his words at Mass inspiring. Bishop Duca talked about an important prayer for Advent from the last words of the Bible. At the end of Revelation we hear, “The [Lord] says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev 22:20) This verse is theculmination of the Scriptures, and it’s packed with meaning. First, the Lord tells us He will come again. Second, I respond with faith: “Amen! I believe it.” Third, once I profess it, I say with all my heart,“Come, Lord Jesus!”
Bishop Duca shared a family story that ties to this verse. In his father’s last days in the nursing home, his dad would say, “I’m ready to go home” which was his way of saying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” TheLord answered his prayers because he passed away peacefully in his chair after breakfast, his favorite meal of the day.
To embrace Advent, we need to pray this prayer and mean it: “Come, Lord Jesus!” By praying this we acknowledge that we need Him, that we’re ready to let go of anger, gossip, bitterness andunforgiveness, and embrace actions of love. In a world that is celebrating Christmas full tilt, the church is our oasis for Advent. We need Jesus to come into our hearts, so we need to make this prayer our own.
May the gift of His coming remind us we have reason to rejoice. “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Mass Intentions Mass and Candle Intention books are still open for January – June of 2019. Please feel free to call or come by the Pastoral Center to have your intentions put on the calendar.
Bulletin Memorials Names for memorials included in the bulletin are due Jan 2, 2019. Memorials are $50/year Please send your payment by check or by placing it in an envelope marked “bulletin memorials” and dropping it in the collections at Mass. Invoices will not be sent out.
Homebound Update If you bring communion to the homebound in our cluster please call the Pastoral Center (265-3953) and give their name(s), address, and phone number so that we can update our list. If you know someone who cannot attend Mass regularly due to age or illness please let us know so they can be added to the list as well. We want to make sure all of our parishioners are being cared for. Circles of Care The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People requires that all children enrolled in Catholic schools and parish schools of religion receive Safe Environment training. The Diocese of Baton Rouge provides such training for grades K-12 utilizing the program, Circles of Care! The Circles of Care lesson has been scheduled in the cluster at our regular sessions on Jan. 14 and 15, 2019. Letters were sent home to the parents with the children on Dec. 10 and 11, 2018. Parents have the right to opt their
child(ren) out of receiving Safe Environment training. Those parents choosing not to have their child(ren) participate in the training are required to sign the letter that was sent home stating so by Dec. 17 and 18.
Pilgrimage to Italy, Rome and Assisi Fr. Vincent Dufresne will be leading a pilgrimage to Italy, October 16-25, 2019. This isan excellent opportunity for “first-timers” to visit the Eternal City and the home of St. Francis & St. Clare. All the essential experiences will be included: a Papal Audience in Rome, visits to St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum, visits to the other majorbasilicas of the city as well as classic historic sites. In Assisi, we will visit the religious sites associated with St. Francis, and visit St. Clare’s convent and her place of burial. Even if you have been before, October is the best time to spend two weeks in Italy! To get information and register, please go to www.travelillume.com/trc/onq or call Fr. Vincent directly at the St. Joseph, Paulina, Pastoral Center, 225-869-5751. Space is limited, the deadline to signed up is January 15, 2019.
