PRINCIPAL’S REPORT ORGANISATION CAN BE A CHALLENGE AS WE EMBRACE TERM 4 A major challenge for students in Term 4 is being organised for a steady flow of assessment tasks, the first HSC assessment period and Semester 2 exams for Years 7-10. Students need to look ahead, set some goals and plan to be well-organised and hence work steadily throughout the term. Each student needs to decide to be the type of student who achieves their best otherwise they will end up disappointed knowing that they didn’t work hard and consequently attain unsatisfactory results in their report. Procrastination can be a big problem for students. Making the decision to start working rather than talk to friends, watch television, play on the computer or chat on the internet can be very difficult. Students need to decide to spend their time on constructive homework and study. Being organised means that you will not feel stressed and you can enjoy the times when you are not working, feeling confident that you have a set plan and which you are following. I encourage parents to help their son / daughter with their plans and discuss organisational matters in relation to study and homework. UNIFORM Thank you to all the families who made sure all uniform requirements were ready for this term! I urge parents to ensure their sons/daughters have all the correct uniform items. If any family has difficulty with purchasing the necessary items please contact me at the College; I would be happy to help. Students who choose not to wear the uniform correctly will be met with serious consequences. I am disappointed by some students who are not wearing it correctly. It is a smart uniform when worn properly but it looks very ordinary if this is not the case. Two major concerns are:

• Skirt length is to the knee • Boys’ shirts are to be tucked in.

2016 ENROLMENTS We currently have a large number of families on waiting lists for enrolments into each of the Year groups. In order to offer places it is essential that the school knows if any students will not be continuing here next year. If your son or daughter will not be continuing at MacKillop College in 2016, please advise the school office as soon as possible. YEAR 10 EXTRAVAGANZA Congratulations to the Year 10 Creative Arts students. Wednesday night was an outstanding success. All students should be very proud of their work and performances. The art was displayed professionally in a gallery style and the theatre was filled with beautiful music and creative drama. Sincere thanks to our staff who support these students, Mrs Jennifer Campbell - Year 10 Drama, Mrs Meg Anderson - Year 10 Music, Mr Lincoln Beddoe, Mrs Robyn Cornale - Year 10 Visual Arts. Mr Beddoe is on leave at the moment and I thank Leonie Cutcliffe who assisted in his absence.

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS CATCH THE WAVE AND ABORIGINAL IMMERSION DAY Last week was an amazing week for Youth Ministry in the school. MacKillop College was privileged to host Catch the Wave retreats which is the first step of the CSYMA program. Year 8 students from both Regional College and MacKillop College were encouraged to be open to faith and ministry. The day consisted of games and activities, testimonials from Youth Ministry Officers and students about the impact of their faith on their lives and small group activities. We finished with a whole year mass organised by the students. Student from Year 8 are now invited to join a special Year 9 Religion class where students will be taught about living out the gospel message today. Friday, 16th October was another exciting day as students from the Year 9 CSYMA class headed up to Bowraville on an Indigenous Catholic Immersion Day. The day included input from local aboriginal elders and then a visit to St Mary's Primary School which is the local catholic school, where student handed out afternoon tea, joined in activities and then ran a liturgy for the end of the day.

YEAR 11 NEWS Next Wednesday, 28th October will be a very special Awards Assembly for Year 11. It will be held in the Theatre on the Junior site and parents are warmly invited to this event. This will be a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the hard work done by students in their Preliminary courses. I extend the appreciation of the College community to Charles Gaherity, Lucie Williams, James Ting and Georgia Puriri who have given up their time to attend a Leadership Seminar in Coffs Harbour next week. These fine young students are making a difference to our College community through their involvement in such an inspirational event. In week 5 there are two events that are very significant for Year 11. On Wednesday, 4th November there is a seminar “Elevate Your Education” that all Year 11 will be attending in periods 1 and 2. Friday, 6th November is the Rrisk event at Panthers from 9.00a.m. until 3.00p.m. Both these events are compulsory because of the valuable material that will be presented. Also in week 5, Thursday, 5th November all Year 11 students in leadership positions will be attending a Twilight Retreat. More information will be given in the next few days but students who are on the SRC or are House Captains need to put this into their calendars especially if they are rostered on for work on that day and need to make other arrangements. Jenni Searson Year 11 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 10 NEWS Congratulations to Sebastian Groeneveld, Bradley De Domizio, Mitchell Wadwell , Tayla Fehon and Lachlan Kirkland who have received a Pastoral Coordinator Award. Great effort and keep up the good work. In April Scott Irving applied for a Rotary Marine course in Coffs Harbour. 14 students from the north of the state were chosen and he was one. The students were involved in tours and intense workshops with people from Parks and Wildlife, Water Police, Customs, marine scientists, etc. They went to Mutton Bird Island at night, kayaked with aboriginal elders and dived on Solitary Island reef to name a few things. There are a whole lot of initiatives out there; students just need to open up their horizons and look to the community. Well Done Scott.

HOSPITALITY NEWS Year 11 Hospitality students have begun two initiatives this term which contribute further to developing their espresso coffee-making skills. Each week students take it in turns to work with Maxine Stone in the canteen on the junior site (Monday and Tuesday) or with Craig Munro on the Coffee Shot Van at the senior campus site (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). This initiative allows students to practise skills they have learnt in the classroom or commercial kitchen, and it gives them the opportunity to work alongside professionals. Great work and effort Year 11. Well done and thank you very much to Craig Munro and Maxine Stone for their support with these initiatives.

PUBLIC SPEAKING NEWS ROTARY PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION – CLUSTER FINAL On Monday, 19th October Stephanie Clark (Year 10) represented MacKillop College at the 2015 Rotary Public Speaking Competition Cluster Final held at Laurieton United Services Club. Previously Stephanie had won the Club competition to advance to this final; Students were asked to present a five minute presentation on a subject of their choice, linking that topic to Rotary’s 4 Way Test. Judging on the night was carried out by two highly experienced public speakers from Toastmasters. On the night Stephanie competed against two other students, one each from Hastings Secondary College and Camden Haven High School. Stephanie was awarded 1st place after speaking about her recent journey to the Solomon Islands as part of the school visit to Visale. She spoke very well with an engaging manner and a genuine passion for her subject. Stephanie will now go on to speak at the Zone Finals at Walcha early in the new year. We wish Stephanie the very best for this event. We would also like to thank Geoff Workman and the members of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie for inviting the school to be part of this competition and the Rotary Club of Laurieton for hosting the event. SCIENCE NEWS YEAR 10 STUDENTS GO BACK TO PRESCHOOL On Tuesday and Wednesday last week, an energetic and enthusiastic group of Year 10 Science students wowed the students of St Joseph’s Preschool with science. The preschool students experimented with chromatography, surface tension of milk, acid and carbonate reactions, magnets, electricity, preserved specimens and the static electricity “party room” under the direction of our very capable Year 10 students. Our students captivated the attention of their audience and managed to impart some scientific knowledge as well –some future educators in our midst perhaps? The way they interacted with the students and responded to the volume of questions was impressive, especially after 15 rotations! Our students were outstanding ambassadors of the College and the teachers at St Joseph’s Preschool could not speak highly enough of them. Congratulations on a fabulous science expo.

Unfortunately MacKillop will not progress to the next round of the competition. Congratulations go to all the boys whose effort and sportsmanship were exemplary throughout training and the tournament. A huge thank you goes to Mr Glen Burge for assisting with scoring throughout the day. The team: Tyrone Gaffney-Allen (C), Tom Connolly, Riley Mallyon, Hayden Ryan, Alex Horder, Matt Burge, Nick Smith, Lachlan Wood, Sam Nunan, Ambrose Humphreys, Tom Currey, Andrew Stocks Scott Schumann Year 7/8 T20 coach YEAR 9/10 HASTINGS T20 CRICKET HIGH SCHOOLS COMPETI TION The MacKillop College Year 9 and 10 T20 cricket team were again successful in winning the Hastings section of the North Coast T20 cricket competition at Tuffins last Monday. This is the fifth year in a row that the College has won this section of the competition. The team played two games on the day. Details of each game are below. Game 1 vs St Joseph’s Regional College St Joseph’s - 5/75 from 15 overs (Will Rogers 2/11, Isaac Lawrence 1/2,) were defeated by MacKillop College 4/76 from 13.2 overs (Jacob Searle 36 not out, Caleb Gallagher 17) Game 2 vs St Columba Anglican School MacKillop College – 130 from 15 overs (Jacob Searle 52 retired, Isaac Lawrence 22, Fraser Carroll 13, and Jack Williams 10 not out, Tommy Brennan 8 not out) defeated St Columba 7/58 from 15 overs (Josh Minihan 2/12, Jake Reimer-Madden 1/6, Josh Morley 1/16, and Fraser Carroll 1/0. In addition to the boys mentioned above, Isaac Trow was the spearhead of the bowling attack and was unlucky not to take a wicket and Jeremy Boys showed his versatility by bowling spin in the first game and keeping wickets very well in the second. The team will now play in the next round of the competition on Thursday, 12th November at Tuffins Lane against the champion schools from the Macleay and Manning regions. Dave McMahon 9/10 T2O cricket coach GIRLS T20 CRICKET HIGH SCHOOLS COMPETITION Our girls’ cricket team competed in a modified format of the T20 competition last week. We had a good opening match against Hastings Secondary College but were narrowly beaten in the end. Our second match saw the girls put in a solid effort using the knowledge and experience in game one, but the Regional College were just too good for us as they went on to the final and were eventual District Champions. The two losses didn't dent our team's enthusiasm as they put it all together in the last match where they had a 120 run victory over Camden Haven High. Congratulations to all members of the team on their enthusiasm, great sportsmanship, willingness to learn and most of all have fun and enjoy the game of cricket. Jess Hoskins, Jess Davis and Hannah Daley were voted Players’ Player in our games. Best and Fairest player overall in training and games was Jazmyn Jennings. Congratulations to these ladies and all team members. Team: Jazmyn Jennings, Amy Mutton, Amelia Humphreys, Jess Hoskins, Caitlyn Rich, Georgia Marino, Jessica Davis, Ella Bultitude, Hannah Daley, Amelia Munro and Mirin Davies. Berg Shield Cricket v Regional College On Tuesday, 20th October the MacKillop College side faced Regional College, in the first round of the state-wide knockout cricket competition known as the Berg Shield. MacKillop fielded a young side consisting of mainly Year 7 and 8 students in the Year 9 and under age competition. MacKillop batted first and achieved a very pleasing total of 6/135 from their 30 overs. Best for the side was captain Koby Smith (41), Ambrose Humphreys (24) and Tommy Brennan (22). The boys batted well in difficult outfield conditions and the side felt confident of defending the total at the change of innings. In reply, Regional got off to a solid start, reaching 3/77 and looking on target to reach the total. However, three quick wickets to impressive young leg spinner Alex Horder looked to have turned the match in our favour. A late partnership from two Regional batsman set up an exciting finish with the batting team requiring 6 runs from the final 6 deliveries to secure the victory. Unfortunately for MacKillop, our score was passed with four balls to spare. Best bowlers were Alex Horder (3/13) and Tommy Brennan (2/30). Special congratulations to the side on the spirit and sportsmanship in which the match was played and the enthusiasm and commitment to training that the boys have displayed. The success of such a young side suggests a promising future for MacKillop College cricket.

DOWNIE TROPHY CRICKET: ROUND 1 vs ST JOSEPH’S REGIO NAL COLLEGE The MacKillop senior boys had an impressive win against cross town rivals St Joseph’s Regional. MacKillop lost the toss and batted first, Tom Madden fell cheaply and we were 1-8 off 4 overs. Then (Man of the Match) Max Lower (61) and Caleb Gallagher (50) put on a 108 partnership to steady the ship at 2-116 after 23 overs. Angus Thurgate coming in at number 5 scored a free-flowing 44 to help our middle order nudge 200. By the 45th over we were all out for 221. In response St Joseph’s Regional started well with Jack Dobbyns and Kade Fens putting on 82 for their second wicket. Our opening bowlers Captain Liam Coelho and Isaac Trow kept the opposition reasonably quiet, but they certainly had taken to our change bowlers. St Joseph’s were 3-120 after 24 overs and then the game was well in the balance at that stage. Then Isaac Lawrence and Jordy Best bowled well with Jacob Searle to put the brakes on, where Isaac Lawrence had taken 3 big scalps to finish with 3-15 off 5. Liam Coelho and Isaac Trow were then reintroduced and Isaac finished with 3-30 off 10 and Liam 1-25 off 8 to make it very hard for any resistance. Angus Thurgate bowled a handy spell at the end to grab 2-1 off 3 overs whilst Tom Madden finished the match with 1-32 off 6. The boys completed a good day where they were solid with the bat and ball but will need to work on their fielding / catching if they are to progress further into the competition. Thanks to Mr Coelho for his assistance and scoring on the day.

MacKillop College students currently participating in the instrumental program will also attend. The purpose of this day is to provide an opportunity for these students to gain an understanding of the scope of the Co-curricular Music Program and to work with students involved in the program from Years 7 to 11 to further develop their musical skills and confidence. The Band Day will be directed by Mr Rob Denham (Co-curricular Music Coordinator MacKillop College) and Mr Frank Rugers (Bluegum Music). Assistance will be provided on the day by a number of music tutors and senior music students from MacKillop College. Rehearsals and workshops will take place in and around the Music Centre and Junior MPC at MacKillop College beginning at 9.00a.m. (staff supervision will be available in the MPC from 8.00a.m.) and concluding at 2.45p.m. Students will then return to the MPC at 5.30p.m. for a concert for parents and families beginning at 6.00p.m. and concluding at 7.15p.m. The MacKillop Concert Band, Big Band, Junior Stage Band, Senior Stage Band and Brass Ensemble will be performing at this concert. We hope to see you there! MUSIC TUITION AT MACKILLOP COLLEGE Many aspiring music students of today often find “DIY” musical instrument teaching resources through online courses, apps and YouTube courses. Whilst such technology is a good aid for learning, research states that the best way to learn a musical instrument is through individual tuition from an expert teacher. Furthermore, the Stage 6 Music Curriculum requires students to perform for assessment on an instrument of their choice. It is therefore necessary for schools with an interest in music excellence to provide opportunities for students to learn an instrument. As part of the MacKillop College Co-curricular Music program students are provided with the opportunity to arrange private instrumental tuition directly with tutors at their homes or studios or at the College in breaks or during class time. At MacKillop College we currently offer tuition for guitar, bass guitar, voice, drum kit and percussion. Tuition on a wide range of other instruments can also be organised on your behalf off site and outside of College times. If you are interested in receiving music tuition at MacKillop College please contact Mr Denham in order to organise a lesson time, instrument and tutor. REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE Due to the exceptionally busy nature of Term 4 it is essential that all students regularly attend rehearsals and arrive on time. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal they must let Mr Denham know by email or in person as soon as possible. TERM 4 EVENTS Term 4 is always busy for schools with many end-of-year events and activities. Please take note of the events outlined in the “Upcoming Events” section below to stay on top of household organisation during this busy period. Of particular importance is the Co-curricular Music Showcase and Awards Night. This night was highly successful last year and has become an annual event. This showcase concert aims to acknowledge the efforts of co-curricular music students and showcase the outstanding talent that comes through our College. It is essential that all members of the Co-curricular Music Program attend. An invitation has been extended to stand together to Reclaim the Night! Reclaim the Night is a yearly protest event that looks to shine a light on harassment and violence that can occur under the cover of darkness, and make a stand that everyone has a right to feel safe in the community, even after the sun sets. Join us as we march from the Short Street Coles to Town Green. This all ages event will be a night with singing and speakers. You are asked to bring anything that ‘glows’ in the dark – paper lanterns, LED light accessories or glow sticks.
