Obituary
Graeme Davey: Died 2nd February 2015
Graeme Davey was involved with the CBA back in the 1970’s, was President of NZBF (BBNZ) about 1981-1986 and for the next 10 years or so was on various FIBA committees eventually becoming a board member for some years. In earlier days he was very active in our local activities. He played at club level, was CBA secretary or treasurer or both and was also secretary/treasurer of BRANZ.
We hosted several visiting teams in the 1970’s. I can remember a Czech team, U of Oregon and a Mid–West Big Ten team. In about 1984 while he was President, NZBF hosted the one and only (as I recall) Commonwealth Basketball Tournament in NZ. Men and Women’s teams came from England, Canada, Australia, Fiji and Gibraltar - can’t remember if others. We made a huge loss but had a lot of fun!
However to me, Graeme’s big contribution to NZ basketball was his FIBA activity. He represented Oceania on FIBA and with the late Sir Lance Cross, the only New Zealanders to have held this position. He could also be the last given how things have changed at this level and the politics involved - but that is another story. I know initially he spent a lot of his own money attending FIBA meetings in a minor capacity before becoming known among in the international Basketball fraternity and gaining election to the board. He also needed Australia’s support which was often hard to obtain. Somehow he worked it out.
In the 1980’s he personally hosted Boris Stankovic, the then FIBA General Secretary, and his wife around the country for a week and told me Boris didn’t put his hands in his pockets once during the week! Possibly one reason why NZ was invited for the first time as a wild card entry to the World Champs in Spain in about 1986/87. But it put us on the map – and we have been to a few since. Another story I heard was about the first Secretary General, the legendary William R Jones, who held office for about 44 years. When he died (in office), they found that all FIBA bank accounts were in his personal name! Created some complications but possibly not public knowledge.

General Managers ReportI write this report on the day following another big after shock which woke us all up at 3:30am. The effects of the Earthquakes continue to linger, and like the rebuilding of the city around us, we need to build all of our programmes with deeper foundations to enable them to survive the environmental conditions under which we operate. The first foundation is people. We are very fortunate to have an army of volunteers who contribute to all of our activities. Without this support the whole thing would very quickly fall over. To the coaches, referees, floor controllers, team managers, club administrators, life members and parents, I wish to say a collective thank you from the entire basketball community. You are the glue that holds us all together, and your efforts are valued and appreciated.I would also like to thank the CBA staff all of their work in 2015. James, Nicky, Carol and Lori and myself are building a good team. We all have our positions on the court, but also play a lot of help defence with each other. Two significant changes have occurred in 2015, with James moving into the competitions role, and Lori coming on board as the new community coach and Women’s development officer. The positive effects of these changes are already being seen.I would also like to thank the CBA Board for their guidance and support of the organisation and myself personally. We are one third of the way through our three-year strategic plan, and the vast majority of our objectives are on track to be achieved. There are also significant challenges ahead in terms of facilities and demographics, and the Board are well positioned to see these through. Our five year club development plan has also been started, and already five clubs are starting to make headway into Tier one status. Then second foundation is financial, and I am pleased to report a major turnaround of the associations accounts for 2015. We will report a healthy surplus, and as a result return
to a position of positive equity. The Board goal of 6 months operating expenses in reserve is still a long way off, but the first steps have been taken. It should be noted that this result was achieved without raising club entry fees, and again we are determined to hold them steady in 2016.I would like to fully acknowledge the support that the CBA receives from a wide variety of outside agencies. This support enables the CBA to focus on the big picture, and deliver programs which serve the wider community and target groups that are under-represented within our current base. It also allows us to commit resources to player, coach
and referee development. The CBA thanks the following groups for their continued support; The Canterbury West Coast Sports Trust, Christchurch City Council. The Rata Foundation, the Mainland Foundation, The New Zealand Community Trust, The Lion Foundation, The New Zealand Racing Board, The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Trust, The Four Winds Foundation, the Southern Trust, Pub Charity, and Air Rescue and Community services.Sponsors are also an increasing source of revenue, and it was fantastic at the recent club forum to be able to give some money back to clubs as a result of these relationships. A special thank you to our commercial partners New Zealand Home Loans, McDonalds, Benchmark Homes, and our newest member of the team, Alloyfold.
The third foundation is the development of new programmes and initiatives. The McDonalds Thompson Trophy was a stand-out success in 2015, culminating in two fantastic matches for the Division One and Division Two titles. The fact that these matches were played out in front of a packed house at Cowles Stadium is a reflection of the huge level of support the competition enjoyed from the community. Many schools have made a real event of the home matches, and Tuesday night basketball is becoming a catch phrase. I am looking forward to the girls Whelan Trophy in 2016.
To the coaches, referees, floor controllers,
team managers, club administrators, life
members and parents, I wish to say a collective
THANK YOUfrom the entire
basketball community. You are the glue that holds us all together, and your efforts are
valued and appreciated.

In June we hosted the Tall Ferns for a three match series against the Japanese National Women’s team. This was a fantastic event, and both the standard of basketball and support from the community was great to see. A special thank you to the Mainland Foundation for sponsoring the free children’s tickets, and for the Christchurch Casino, City Council, and the Elms hotel for their support.Another foundation is the representative program, where the CBA partners with the Canterbury Rams to deliver a summer development program, and all the representative teams. This is a huge task, and a special thanks to Caleb Harrison, and his team of coaches and volunteers. We had a very successful season, winning two titles and many top eight finishes. Congratulations to all the players who made a representative team, a tournament team or who managed to represent New Zealand. The CBA had six finalists in the Marriotts Hadlee Sports Awards, with Sam Timmins taking out the Junior male athlete of the year. Bradley Garmer, Matthew Bathurst, Laken Wairau, the Under 19 boys team, and CBA/Rams
were the other finalists. The profile of basketball continues to grow, and it is always encouraging to see this recognised in these awards.2016 is looking to be another solid year, with the introduction of the Glory league system, and some new facilities on the horizon. I am hopeful basketball in Canterbury will continue its upward trajectory and these foundations support a greater load.

Referees Report2015 was another successful year for Canterbury referees. We had strong contingents at all National Championships with several Juniors stepping up to U23 and NPC level and getting their first taste of three man officiating.Officials attending National Championships included Tanaysha Morris (U13 Finals referee), Brad Clive(U13 Finals referee), Okirano Tiale (U13 Finals referee), Sam McCartin(U13 Finals referee), Hamish Dale (U15 and A), Sandra French (A Prems Finals referee), Marty Davison(U19 Finals referee), Elliot Duncan (NPC Finals referee), Isaiah Morris, Adele Morris, Matt Mischewski, Amber Nutira, Ender Brennan, Tanla Millar, Alfie May, Brad Blackler, Bailey Spooner, Seddon Smith, Neville Brooker,Richard Kenny and Mikey Graham. Congratulations to you all.We are privileged to have seven NBL referees in Canterbury as we welcome Sean Cronin from Palmerston North and Marty Davison starting his first season. They will join Gavin Zimmerman, Raewyn Willocks, Matt Bathurst, Elliot Duncan and Leon Demetriades. Our NBL referees enjoyed many successes this season. Gavin, Matt and Marty officiated the Tall Ferns v Japan series here in Christchurch and Ashburton. Gavin once again officiated the NBL Finals series and also refereed the Tall Ferns v Australia Test in addition to being awarded the Final in the u16 Oceania Girls Championship. Matt Bathurst enjoyed his first season as a FIBA referee officiating at the William Morris Trophy in Chinese Taipei and being awarded the Boys Final at the U16 Oceania Championships. Congratulations to you all on such outstanding achievements! The Hadlee awards rounded off the season for our Seniors with Matt Bathurst a Finalist in the “Official of the Year” category and Raewyn Willocks receiving a Lifetime Achievement award. Well done both of you!The National 3 x 3 Tour came to Christchurch in February and saw the biggest competition in the country. Eleven referees officiated all day and it was an outstanding success. Thank you all.2015 saw a big improvement in the number of games covered by badged referees. It is hoped that this season will see even more games covered s BBNZ make it a requirement that teams provide a suitably qualified referee
for all Premierships. As a result, I am expecting an even busier year with in-school courses. Last year saw over 200 referees either attend courses or be mentored in various competitions.Finals Day was a great success with an increase in the number of Finals covered by three referees. This was due to the number of Canterbury officials selected for Senior Tournaments.CBA awards night saw referees included for the first time in many years and it was great to see a large referee contingent present in support on the night. Awards included Matt Bathurst – Senior Official of the Year, Seddon Smith – Most Improved Senior, Bailey Spooner – Junior Referee of the Year, Sam McCartin – Most Improved Junior and Raelene Forde – Contribution to CBA. A special award was made to Raewyn Willocks acknowledging her CBA/NBL career and the help she gives during the season. Congratulations to you all.Hamish Dale was the recipient of the Canterbury Secondary Schools Most Promising Referee. He follows in the footsteps of Matt Bathurst, Marty Davison and Sam Dixon to name a few and we expect great things from both him and last years recipient Brad Clive – you have large footprints to fill. Many Congratulations.I would also like to thank our regular Floor Controllers, Cathy Hyland, Neville Brooker, Isaac Gilpin, Jamie Graham, Richard Kenny, Courtney Hamblin and Katie Griffiths for an outstanding job every week. Bruce Martin for his work as Mid-Week Co-Ordinator and a special thanks to Darrel Flynn-Thompson and Adele Morris for combining their Floor Controlling duties with a fantastic job of mentoring referees each week. Thank you all. Special congratulations to Darrel who completed the first level of his Australian Referee Coaching exams in Ballarat. In conclusion I would like to say how proud I am of all my Canterbury referees. Your achievements are a constant source of amazement, each and every one of you step up each season and go the extra mile.Thank you all, I’m lucky to have you.

Club Basketball Competitions ReportOverviewWe had a major new initiative this year with the introduction of the McDonald’s Thompson Trophy Competition. This saw 16 of the best High School Boys teams compete weekly with each other on Tuesday Evenings. This regular season portion of the competition was played in the school’s gyms, which allowed for a better school atmosphere as the team’s school mates were able to see them more easily than solely in the weekend club competitions. To keep the same cohort of young females playing basketball, the 2014 U15 Girls grade was expanded to be U16 in the 2015 season. Middleton Grange School proudly opened their new gymnasium early in the basketball season, in conjunction with a refurbishment of their original gym. Thanks in part to the efforts of Tim Bennett and Faith Harrison, we were able to play each Saturday on these two courts, as well as Cowles Stadium and the Bishopdale YMCA. Going from four venues to three significantly lessened the amount of clashes and travel issues to account for during scheduling.A shuffle of roles in the CBA occurred mid-season, with Chad Blair resigning to pursue other opportunities. James Lissaman began working in a newly created role (Community Basketball Manager), with the primary responsibilities of ensuring club basketball was delivered, and managing the Lincoln University Scholarship Programme.
Weekend Winter Club Basketball Report
Club Competition - Grand Finals DayCowles Stadium was once again our host for the 2015 Grand Finals Day, with fourteen separate grades contested on this day, and only two of them entering overtime! Fantastic crowds of supporters were on hand throughout the day, and were very impressed with the level of play exhibited.
Men’s PremierThe first round of the Men’s Premier competition again saw the Hoben Trophy contested between Jamie Graham’s Wolverines club, and finals Mainstay Atami. The actual final proved to be no contest however, as the Wolverines destroyed Atami 83-53. Jamie Graham commented after the win ‘So proud of these boys. They have been so committed and dedicated to the club for a number of years and to finally see all that hard work come to fruition is awesome. And to do it against a team that has been so dominant for so many years makes it even sweeter!’The Premier Championship saw the identical match-up, with both Atami and Wolverines winning some tough semi-final match-ups against Gators and Lincoln University respectively. Atami played much better than in the Hoben Trophy Final, building a ten-point lead in the third quarter. Wolverines had
struggled shooting from the outside up until this point, but this changed dramatically in an instant. Kieran Ball, Michael Kinley and Alex Irvine all connected from behind the arc, gaining the lead for the wolf pack. Atami had a chance to regain the lead in the dying seconds, but an errant pass was stolen by Shou Nisbet – giving Jamie Graham’s team all the hardware from the Men’s Premier Competition, including the Finals MVP award which went to Lionel Hopgood after an 18 point, 14 rebound performance.First V: Marty Davison (Pioneer), Jeremy Hancock (UC), Lionel
Hopgood (Wolverines) Ethan Rusbatch (Checkers), Rusty Thomson (Atami)
MVP: Lionel Hopgood
Women’s PremierNorth Canterbury faced off against the University of Canterbury in the Patron’s trophy final, and if not for a relatively short bench in the final may have written a different ending than usual. UC gained the trophy on the back of an 81-68 win.In the Premier Championship, UC and North Canterbury again featured, with scoring being at a premium in this contest. North Canterbury once again struggled with depth, with Gemma Hazeldine and Mary Goulding both being out of the country. This proved too much to overcome, with the bigs for UC – Pip Connell, Darcy Rose and Ashlee Rigter, dominating to the tune of a 69-54 win for UC. Darcy Rose was awarded with the Finals MVP award as she was credited with 16 point and 9 rebounds.First V: Pip Connell (UC), Hayley Gray (NC), Victoria King
(Pioneer), Tessa Morrison (LU), Bridget Salkeld (Halswell)
MVP: Hayley Gray
Men’s Division OneThis grade had another bit of growth, with 14 teams contesting on the 2015 season. The team backed by, and named after 2 Cheap Cars had shown themselves as a team to be reckoned with, with three ex-pro players from the Philippines competing. Atami countered with cohesiveness, with largely the same squad for the past three seasons remaining intact. A 20-11 fourth quarter saw Atami level with 2 Cheap Cars at the end of regulation, and despite losing Finals MVP Ivan Hill to a torn Achilles, the momentum stayed with Atami as they won 82-79 in overtime.First V: Matt Bathurst (Pioneer), Todd Blake (Wolverines), Ariel
Mepana (2 Cheap Cars), Penani Alesana (Placemakers), Troy Russell (Atami)
MVP: Ariel Mepana

Women’s Division One
Royals completed their perfect season, as they took care of the UC team in a comprehensive fashion 71-33 in the Grand Final. UC featured a much younger team than Royals, and we will no doubt see a lot of their players continue on the hardwood in the coming seasons. This year though belonged well and truly to the experience of Royals, with the inside game of Jo Casey and Finals MVP Pina Lissaman being too much for UC to handle.First V: Jo Casey (Royals), Fuata’I Lai Kong (Royals), Letitia
Mullaly (UC), Pina Lissaman (Royals), Helen Neighbours (Royals)
MVP: Letitia Mullaly
Men’s Under 23
In a very rare occurrence for any level of competitive basketball, the Lincoln University Bulls were able to pull off the feat of a second consecutive unbeaten season, matching up with Wolverines in the Grand Final. In an almost step by step repeat of the 2014 Final, the LU Bulls jumped out to a strong 24-11 lead in the first quarter, which never came close to being relinquished. Lincoln University Scholarship recipient Ben Bowie proved his worth as he was named Finals MVP after a 17 point, 12 rebound performance helped give his LU side an 81-63 win.First V: Taylor Britt (Wolverines), James Cawthorn (LU), Cam
Chalmers (Gators), Aled Jones (LU), James levings (LU)
MVP: Aled Jones
Men’s Under 20
Burnside High School faced off against a strong UC team, made up of a large number of current and former CBHS students. Jack Ansell was particularly effective for UC, notching 33 points and 11 rebounds, but the extra depth that Toby Gillooly’s team had saw them counter the UC comeback, after a 59-59 scoreline entering the final quarter. Finals MVP Gillooly’s 24 points and 9 rebounds helped his team regain the lead, and the trophy with an 82-71 win.First V: Ashleigh Adamson (Gators), Jack Ansell (CBHS), Toby
Gillooly (Burnside), Carl Isitt (Papanui), Gus Janssen (Rangiora)
MVP: Toby Gillooly
Women’s Under 20Burnside made its way in to the final for this grade in back to back seasons, but were up against a tough Rangi Ruru side. Burnside showed tremendous fight in a game where they were limited in terms of the number of players on their bench – using a 15-9 third quarter run, but didn’t have quite enough to withstand the well-oiled Rangi Ruru machine. Youngster Meg Thompson gained the Finals MVP honours
after a stellar 23 point effort, and helped her Rangi Ruru side to a relatively easy 77-58 win.First V: Charlotte Eglinton (Rangi Ruru), Sofia Kennedy (Gators),
Tsubasa Nisbet (Burnside), Nicky Pio (Burnside), Paige Willman (Burnside)
MVP: Tsubasa Nisbet
Boys’ Under 17Rangiora High School took on Burnside High Schools Black team in this match-up of young stars. Despite Rangiora leading for the majority of the game, Burnside came storming back to cut the North Canterbury team’s lead to only two points with three minutes to play. Finals MVP Jake Millar accounted for 25 of his Rangiora team’s points, and cajoled them into a well-deserved 75-66 win.First V: Sean Kelly (SBHS), Mitch Mahon (Cashmere), Jordan
Mann (Rangiora), Connor McLaughlin (Cashmere), Isaiah Morris (Burnside)
MVP: Isaiah Morris
Girls’ Under 16Rangi Ruru appeared in the younger girls’ grade in addition to the older U20 grade, and faced a well-coached Checkers team. This game was in the balance right up until the last few minutes of the game, when the Rangi Ruru defence forced Checkers into some very tough situations on offense, which they couldn’t convert. Bailey Chamberlain was awarded the Finals MVP award after helping her Rangi Ruru team to a 73-64 win.First V: Bailey Chamberlain (Rangi Ruru), Violet Eaton
(Checkers), Grace Eglington (Rangi Ruru), Hannah Mischewski (Gators), Michelle Scott (Halswell)
MVP: Grace Eglington
Boys’ Under 15The Wharenui Gators matched up against Cashmere High School in a fantastic game. Early indications were that the Gators club would win this grade after holding the lead at each of the first three quarter breaks. It wasn’t to be though, as a huge 31-17 fourth quarter run for Cashmere saw them turn the tables and walk out with an 83-74 win. Oki Tilaia was well deserving of the Finals MVP award.First V: Jayden Cameron (Burnside), Loius Oskam (Cashmere),
Josh Thomson (SBHS), Okirano Tilaia (Cashmere), Oscar Toone (SBHS)
MVP: Josh Thomson
Junior All-StarsNorth Canterbury’s Year 7/8 All Stars teams showed great potential when it captured both the Boys’ and Girls’ titles while Pioneer (Boys) and Bishopdale YMCA (Girls) took out the Year 5/6 titles with a large crowd packing the stands to watch potential Rams and Wildcats of the future.

McDonald’s Thompson TrophyThe Division II final was eventually won by St Thomas College 75-70 over Christ’s College after an incredible 25 lead changes and 8 ties. Will Harrison, son of Canterbury Rams CEO Andrew Harrison, stood out for Christ’s College with 30 points and 11 rebounds, but it was Mahonri Tauailiili-Pau for St Thomas who literally stole the game with seven clutch steals to go along with his 14 points, Finals MVP award, and the Division II Trophy. In Division I, the unbeaten Middleton Grange faced off against a relatively undersized Cashmere team. Middleton Grange, led by Canterbury Ram Sam Timmins with 29 points, 21 rebounds and five assists beat Cashmere High, led by fellow Ram Joe Cook-Green (22 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists). Cashmere gave the Gators all they could handle, as they fought back from being down by 19 points during the third quarter, to trim the lead down to a single point with a couple of minutes to play. The final scoreline did not reflect the intensity of the game, and the large crowd which witnessed this game were not shy with their appreciation. Sam Timmins was named the Finals MVP after his team finished the game with an 80-68 win.First V: Joe Cook-Greene (Cashmere), Quinn Clinton (CBHS),

In Conclusion2015 was a year of change, and I really appreciate the understanding and empathy the basketball community has shown the CBA as we have faced and worked through some of the issues together. I’m personally looking forward to a much smoother 2016.

CBA Representative ReportOverviewThe 2015 representative season has seen a number of outstanding performances including the U19 boys & U23 men winning their respective national championships as well as the U17 girls finishing runner ups at the U17 National Championships. Individual accomplishments included Sam Timmins leading the New Zealand U18 Men to the World Championship Gold Medal and seven players representing the New Zealand National teams. Ten players from the Canterbury Basketball Association received University scholarships in 2015 to pursue their academic & basketball goals. Thanks to the 27 coaches & 23 managers for all of your efforts in making the 2015 representative season a successful one. Preparations for the 2016 season are underway with 40 players involved with the Summer Development League in each age group with five to seven coaches in each age group developing these players. The representative trials will be on March 13th where up to four teams for each age group will be selected to play in the Easter Selection Tournament. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful 2016 season.
Wildcats and Women’s Basketball Development
The 2015 WBC season saw me in the Head Coaching job for the Wildcats for the first time. This season was a big adjustment period for both the team and myself, as we were approaching the game from very different angles.Overall the team put in a great showing in the first two tournaments and the trainings by the players own admission were as intense as they have ever been. However, we struggled at the finals weekend with many teams adding college and professional players that elevated their game, and we failed to rise to the challenge. On the positive side with the increase of intensity in the Wildcat trainings came an improvement in the level of club competition at Premier grade. In 2016, I would like to see the three Wildcats per team rule enforced to encourage the Wildcats players and squad members to even out the competition and assist clubs such as Pioneer that has not traditionally been a strong women’s premier team. With the great turn out for SDL in the Wildcats grade, the players were able to continue to train and play at a high level through the summer. The addition of former Wildcats as players and coaches was extremely beneficial. We had the experience of Sally and Gina Farmer (ex Olympians), Sarah Corkery, Anna Williams, Donna Lavea (all former US college players).
Out in the community, the Wildcats represented themselves well at a variety of school visits to run skill sessions, including the paid sessions they ran with great success in North Canterbury. With the addition of Alloyfold as a naming rights sponsor at the end of 2015, and their commitment to attracting ten additional sponsors, the Wildcats are now in a position raise the profile even more with the addition of the following:
• Ashley Gayle - American Import who is able to do full time school visits, coaching, public speaking events, and push the other players to reach her standard of play) Ashley is sponsored by Miles Toyota and has a sponsored vehicle with our logo and her name plastered all over it as well as the CBA contact details.
• Mentoring - each Wildcat is mentored by a former player, and will also mentor two junior players in our rep programme which includes coverage of a portion of their basketball fees).
• Sponsors - each traveling player has a sponsor who will be in direct contact with their player via emails, promotional events, sponsor appreciation night, monthly newsletters, and invitations to home games.
At the end of term four, it was decided upon at the secondary school teachers in basketball meeting, to pursue the Whelan trophy for girls on a Tuesday night, in a similar format to that of the Boys McDonald’s Thompson Trophy.
McDonald’s have come on board as a sponsor of the boys’ and girls’ Tuesday night competition, and Term two of 2016 will see this come into being for the first time.

Community Basketball ReportOverview2015 finished with improvements in a variety of areas for Canterbury Basketball, including increased participation in female numbers of the Summer Development League (SDL) both coaching and playing, participation increase in the Hoops programmes at Cowles, and the addition of a Major sponsor for the Canterbury Wildcats.Areas to be improved upon were standard and consistent coaching for the Hoops programmes, professionalism of the Rams players at the school visits, to continue to raise the profile and standard of women’s basketball in the Canterbury Region, and to increase participation of coaching and coaching development at all levels.
Rams In Schools
The Rams in schools programme ran every term throughout 2015. James Lissaman handed the programme over to me for term four which is traditionally a lower numbers term, as many of the schools invest in summer sports. The Rams players involved did well in the four schools that signed up in delivering the programme and providing a fun experience for the children involved. They were punctual, professional, and instructive.I did receive some feedback from schools in previous terms, as I know did James, that there were issues surrounding a few of the imports and their tardiness and occasional unprofessional comments. To rectify this for 2016, I met with all Rams players and staff to outline the programme and expectations for all 9 schools signed up. This included both the delivery of the material and how to ensure it is instructive and fun. I also accompanied the players to the first visits and critiqued them and encouraged the teachers to supply feedback after every session.
Hoops
My management of Hoops began in term four of 2015 which includes programmes at Cowles, Pioneer, Lincoln, and Rolleston. The CBA is responsible for the registration and gym booking at Cowles and Pioneer only, as the Selwyn district council run the other two and the CBA deliver the material.Numbers were up for term four at both Cowles and Pioneer and were lower out in Selwyn (normal for term four).Coaching consistency can be an issue for these programmes as they run immediately after school and the coaches available are often teenagers and university students who have not been entirely reliable in the past. Currently the coaches are paid at the end of a term, which I have requested to change to allow more frequent payments to the coaches.
To combat the inconsistency, I arranged a meeting prior to term one 2016 to address the management of the programme and points of emphasis for the term, as well as having a facebook group to give suggestions, drills, and changes to be made in upcoming sessions and a procedure for dealing with behavioural issues from participants.Feedback from parents at the end of term four and the beginning of term one has been very positive.
Coaching Development
I was extremely fortunate to be able to attend the Sport New Zealand coaching conference in December 2015. Along with 500 other coaches, I was able to glean excellent information from high profile coaches and professionals such as Steve Hansen, Stephen Kearney, Sports Psychologists from the UK and USA, as well as learn from coaches at all levels in our small group work. The biggest point that I took way from this event, was that all these top level coaches and managers are athlete centred and spend a great deal of time and effort working with what their players want and need, and establishing team goals and expectations. Very little dictating occurs. As that translates here to Canterbury Basketball, I do see the player centred coaching occurring in our representative programme and in many of our high school teams.I have found in late 2015 getting a majority our club coaches and top high school coaches(both male and female) to interact and up-skill, somewhat of a challenge. So I will be pushing for more coaches meetings and forums in order for the Canterbury region to share their wealth of knowledge. The majority of coach development that occurred in 2015 was at the junior level, from Hoops, to Rams in Schools, to the Representative level.
Outlook
2016 is looking good for women’s basketball in Canterbury with the addition of large sponsorship for the Wildcats, the Whelan trophy and the increase in female coaches and players in the SDLs.We will continue to work with our young coaches in the Hoops and Rams in Schools programmes to deliver fun and effective sessions that assist in player growth and coaching progression. There will be a large focus on more communal coaching at all levels, to encourage club, high school, rep, and primary coaches to work together to improve our basketball community.

Lincoln University Basketball Scholarship Programme
The scholarship programme that we offer in conjunction with Lincoln University had the following students receive scholarship recognition in the past year:Ben Bowie (Lincoln High School); and Courtney Hamblin (Post Graduate Scholar – Rangiora High School, Dakota State University). Ben Williams (Massey High School)
postponed his scholarship until the end of the 2015 year, and has now begun his studies at Lincoln University.2016 will see the first graduates from our initial class of scholarship recipients, and we are excited to see these initial scholars reach their academic goals.

Tall Ferns v Japan hosted by CBA at Cowles Stadium
Midweek Club Basketball ReportThe Mid-week Men’s competition played in Cowles stadium on Wednesday nights was further reduced to six entries after Royals under Cathy Hyland had to make a belated withdrawal. Aranui Old Boys led by Ricki Hemopo made up the numbers with a late entry and avoid the bye.The grade continues its popularity with semi-social and semi-serious basketball played with hour long games with two x 26 minutes running clock and a popular place for many senior basketballers to see out their careers.2015 season continued on from 2014 being a keen and hard-fought competition and especially noticeably in 2015 was how all teams played their games under a good spirit and sportsmanship with few grumbles.Checkers White, the mainstay of the mid-week competition for nearly a decade, eventually extended its proud record to six championships over the last seven seasons but, in the Grand Final it was very well tested by former champion University (2008 & 2012). It took a stunning three pointer by master blaster Terry Brunel, (who had quiet games in the preceding weeks), to hit a long range stunning shot in the last few seconds to give Checkers White a memorable comeback win 47-46.Checkers played the lame duck through the triple round robins with a 9W,6L record while University and Atami (10W,5L) shared top spot, showing how close the competition was. Long term entry Raiders, the 2005-07 champion, failed to close out it’s games when it mattered most.Players to feature again for Checkers were Nigel Buchanan, Chris Chapman, Terry Brunel, Colin Penny and several other wiley veterans like John Caldwell and Jim Du Rose. The Canterbury Special Olympic team continued to enjoy its games in the grade with five wins this season, with many teams like testing their ability. Congratulations goes to Bradley Garner that represented New Zealand at the SO World Games in Los Angeles in July where he top scored for the team. Bradley is a Finalist in the Marriotts Hadlee Sports awards. The NZ team under Al Robson won the Deloittes Trophy for being the team that best demonstrated sportsmanship and Special Olympic values among the 75 Basketball teams participating at the games. Congratulations Al and Bradley and many thanks to those that helped raise over $6000 to get Bradley there.Atami, led by CBA board member Jeremy Phillips, started the season strongly but injury and other problems saw it struggle towards the end. University has a strong core of former students under the guidance of Jason Rivett and it maybe their turn in 2016. Nigel Buchanan along with his good wife Tracey were duly selected as MVP’s for the Mid-
week grades, a unique husband and wife combination. Congratulations to both players. The Mid-week Women’s competition had the same seven teams again in 2015 with several old faces still around while Jo Mumm was one noticeable absentee having returned home to Nelson. The Mid-week women’s final was played alongside the Thompson trophy finals with a determined Halswell Red retaining their title over arch rival CYA, winning a tight encounter 36-28 after narrowly ahead 14-12 at the break. It was Halswell’s fourth championship since 2006, also winning in 2012.Checkers almost got the better off CYA in the second life semi but the 2013 champion sneaked home 49-40 giving the gallant Checkers third placing. Pioneer ousted a much improved Halswell Green for fourth spot winning 45-31.A change in formats was welcomed by many of the teams, sharing the bye around more fairly but one quirk in the draw saw Checkers and University Minions match up three weeks in a row.Thank YouBruce covered the Floor controlling duties at Cowles and the referee appointments during the season. The CBA thanks go to a core group of people that officiated the Mid-week competition: Richard Kenney, Bruce, Lisa Rooney (CBA Board member), Sam Duggan, Paula Wilkinson, Cathy Hyland and player-refs Chris Chapman, Derek Watson, Aki Tanaka, Susie McAllister and Julian Price, not to forget the help from other team members as required that was also appreciated. Without their help games would not have been covered as well as they were.We look forward to most of you back in 2016 but we will urgently require several more new people to cover possible drop outs.Special congratulations to new comer Sam Duggan who along with Lisa Rooney refereed the Women’s final while Richard Kenneyt was partnered by Paula Wilkinson for the Men’s Grand final.
