Armorial bearingsThe white horse on the shield is theemblem of the County of Kent, andthe three black birds (Cornishchoughs), taken from the arms of theCity of Canterbury, derive from thearms of St Thomas Becket who wasmurdered in Canterbury Cathedral in1170. On the crest are depictedCanterbury’s magnificent WestgateTowers, in front of which are twobishop’s croziers. The ‘supporters’ ofthe shield are the heraldic lions of theCinque Ports, the five EnglishChannel Ports lying opposite toFrance, four of which (Dover, Hythe,Romney and Sandwich) are in Kent.

The University’s motto, taken from theBook of Common Prayer, wastranslated by the 16th CenturyArchbishop Thomas Cranmer as‘whose service is perfect freedom’.
