INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the University College Dublin Student Awards booklet. Each yearUCD awards scholarships, prizes and medals to foster and reward high academicachievement among its students. Last year, over €496,000 in scholarships andprizes was distributed to UCD students from all faculties.

This booklet outlines the general conditions governing the award of Collegescholarships and information about the origin of prizes and medals as well as listingwinners from the previous academic session.

Current awards include: Entrance Scholarships, undergraduate and postgraduateCollege Scholarships and Open Postgraduate Scholarships. In addition, there is awide variety of trust fund prizes and medals available to students.

GENERAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OFUNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Governing Authority reserves the right to revise, at any time, the awards specifiedhereunder.

Note: The scholarships listed are open only to full-time day students unless otherwisestated.

1. All candidates for scholarships awarded on examinations must be student members ofthe University.

2. The decision of the Governing Authority as to the awarding or withholding of anyscholarship, or as to the eligibility of any candidate therefor, or as to any deductionto be made therefrom, shall be final and conclusive.

3. Only those students will be eligible for the award of University scholarships on theresult of any examination who first entered the course leading thereto in the currentsession. Exceptions to this rule will be made only in very special circumstances.Previous attendance at a course covering part of the same matter may render a studentineligible for an award.

4. No student will be eligible for an award unless he/she has passed all the subjects ofthe examination for which the award is made, and has passed the examination at onesitting without compensation, except in the case where a candidate is precluded for areason approved by Faculty from taking all the examination subjects in one sitting.

5. Holders of scholarships must attend such courses and pass such tests as may berequired by the Academic Council in the Faculty in which they have been awarded ascholarship.

6. A candidate may be disqualified from the award of a scholarship by failing to reach anadequate standard in any one subject of the examination.

7. The scholarships awarded in the various Faculties in any session are tenable for oneyear unless otherwise stated.

8. Full scholarships are normally awarded only to candidates reaching a First ClassHonours standard. Scholarships are not awarded to students who do not reach anhonours standard. The grade of honours required by certain Faculties is specified inthe Schedule of University Scholarships in each Faculty, set out on the followingpages.

9 . Where students qualify by their marks for scholarships but are ineligible to receivethe awards, credit will be given to them in the University records. In reckoning firstand subsequent places, students ineligible for scholarship awards will not becounted.

10. Scholarships are tenable only in University College Dublin, and are intended for thesession immediately following their award. The holder of a scholarship who leavesthe University before the end of the session may be required to repay the amountreceived in respect of that session.

11. Scholars are required to pay any University fees due.

12. General conditions governing the award of University scholarships override allother regulations.

GENERAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OFENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS

Each Faculty will award a number of Entrance Scholarships, valued at €1,270 for oneyear, on the basis of points achieved in the Leaving Certificate examination. Onlystudents who present for the Leaving Certificate examination for the first time areeligible for the award of Entrance Scholarships. For the purpose of the scholarship,points will be calculated on the basis of the best six subjects. The scholarships aretenable only in University College Dublin for the first year of a primary degree course.Persons who already hold a degree are not eligible for the award of an EntranceScholarship. Faculties will publish annually the points level on or above which studentswill automatically be awarded a scholarship. The levels for the awards in September 2002are given in the table below.

Please note that candidates are not required to make special application to be consideredfor the award of these scholarships.

To qualify for the scholarship, a candidate must have registered for a place in, or havebeen given permission to defer entry to, a first year course at University College Dublin.

No age limit will apply to qualify for the award of an Entrance Scholarship. The EntranceScholarships awarded in any session are tenable for one year. The scholarships will beawarded on the information concerning applications available following first yearregistration for the session. Candidates may only be awarded the UCD EntranceScholarship once. Students will be notified of their eligibility for a scholarship as soonas possible after the issue of offers. However, scholarships are not finalised or paid untilafter first year registration for the session and receipt of amended Leaving Certificateresults from the Department of Education and Science (usually mid-October).

The holder of an Entrance Scholarship, to be known as an 'Entrance Scholar', who leavesthe University before the end of the session may be required to repay the amount receivedin respect of that session.

The decision of the Governing Authority as to the awarding or withholding of anEntrance Scholarship, or as to the eligibility of any candidate therefor, or as to anydeduction to be made therefrom, shall be final and conclusive.

In addition, Entrance Scholars will be given priority in the allocation of places in theUCD residences, where circumstances permit.

A student may hold only one major Entrance Scholarship. In the event of a studentqualifying for more than one major scholarship, the scholarship of the greater value willbe awarded.

A Level applicants from Northern Ireland who achieve the grades of AAA, AAB and ABBin their best three subjects, attained in one sitting, will also be awarded a scholarshipexcept for applicants to the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine and Law. TheFaculty of Law will award Entrance Scholarships to applicants attaining AAA andentrants to the BBLS Degree gaining AAA or AAB will also be awarded an EntranceScholarship.

Faculty of Medicine Entrance Scholarships

The top five per cent of students entering* each of the Faculty of Medicine Schools -Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Diagnostic Imaging - will beawarded scholarships. These will normally be valued at €1,270 each, except if the totalnumber to be awarded exceeds the allocated sum per school, when the amount will bedivided equally. However, all students on 600 points entering the Faculty of Medicine areguaranteed scholarships of €1,270 each.

Agricultural and Food Engineering Entrance Scholarships

Agricultural and Food Engineering Entrance Scholarships will be awarded to the top threeentrants to the course based on the results of the Leaving Certificate Examination. Thescholarships, valued at €1,270 each, are available to those who do not qualify for thegeneral Engineering Entrance Scholarships. A minimum points score of 500 is requiredfor consideration for these scholarships.

GENERAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OF OPENPOSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

University College Dublin will award thirty postgraduate scholarships to studentsundertaking higher degrees by major thesis. The normal value of each scholarship i s€2,540 subject to the discretion of each Faculty who may combine or dividescholarships. In addition, at the discretion of the Faculty, successful applicants may beconsidered for remission of fees.

The number of scholarships available in each faculty is as follows:

Agriculture 3Arts, Philosophy & Sociology and Celtic Studies 13Commerce 2Engineering and Architecture 3Law 2Medicine 2Science 3Veterinary Medicine 2

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are available equally tograduates of University College Dublin and other universities. They are tenable for oneyear of full-time postgraduate study at University College Dublin.

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

Second Year Scholarships:

Two scholarships of €635 are offered on the results of the First University Examinationin Agricultural Science.

Third Year Scholarships:

Two scholarships of €635 are offered on the results of the Second UniversityExamination in Agricultural Science.

Fourth Year Scholarships:

Four scholarships of €635 are offered on the results of the Third University Examinationin Agricultural Science. The scholarships shall be awarded to the four students whoobtain the highest marks, with not more than one scholarship being assigned to any oneprogramme.

Postgraduate Awards:

Research Demonstratorships:

On the recommendation of the Scholarships Committee, research demonstratorships maybe awarded on the results of the BAgrSc Degree Examination to candidates gaining a goodHonours standard.

Research demonstratorships will be held for one year. The holders will be required to actas demonstrators in their departments for six hours a week during term. They must attendcourses for a higher degree in their subject but will not be permitted to attend any othercourse.

Research demonstrators who have gained the Master's Degree within six terms, or thePhD Degree if applicable, within twelve terms of the primary degree, will be paid anadditional €216 (the first half of this sum on receipt of a certificate from the head of thedepartment that a thesis has been prepared; the second half when the degree has beenconferred).

FACULTIES OF ARTS, PHILOSOPHY & SOCIOLOGY ANDCELTIC STUDIES

Scholarships on the Results of the First University Examination i n

Scholarships on the results of the First University Examination in Arts and of the SecondUniversity Examination in Arts, of the value of €635 each, will be awarded on a subjectbasis.

To qualify for a scholarship on the results of the First University Examination in Arts, astudent must obtain first place and First Class Honours in the subject together with atleast a Second Class Honours in a second subject. On the results of the Second UniversityExamination in Arts, a student must obtain first place and First Class Honours in thesubject with at least a Second Class Honours, Grade I in the other subject.

A student may be awarded more than one scholarship. A scholarship may be dividedbetween students deemed to be ex aequo on the examination results.

The BA Degree is usually taken by Mode II in two major subjects. The following rulesapply in connection with the award of scholarships in Modes I and III.

- In the case of Mode I, one scholarship may be awarded in each subject; twoscholarships may be awarded in Economics and in Psychology if two students attainFirst Class Honours.

- In the case of Mode III, the minor subjects will count jointly as one major subject.

In Honours Mathematics and Honours Mathematical Physics, one scholarship each willbe awarded jointly with the same subjects in the Faculty of Science.

In the Mathematical Science Honours group, one scholarship will be awarded jointly withthe results of the same group in the Faculty of Science.

Open Scholarship in Arts

One second year scholarship or one third year scholarship may be awarded in specialcircumstances to a student in Arts who is ineligible for a normal award. The scholarshipof €635 will be awarded only to a student of outstanding performance.

Prizes on the Modular (Evening) Degree in Arts

Prizes on the results of the Foundation Level Examination and Level 2 Examination andLevel 3 Examination of the Modular Evening Degree in Arts, to the value of €318, maybe awarded on a subject basis.

A prize to the value of €318 may be awarded to the student who achieves the highestmark, but not less than 62% in each subject module, in the Summer examinations, whichincludes semestrial examinations where applicable. A student who gains first place in

two subject modules in the same examination will be given credit for both and mayreceive the monetary value of both prizes.

If two students are deemed to be ex aequo in a subject module, each may receive a prize tothe full value of the award. If more than two students are deemed to be ex aequo, the sumof €635 may be divided equally between them.

Students repeating a subject module in an examination will not be eligible for the awardof a Modular Programme Prize.

Candidates to whom prizes are awarded must be student members of the University andmust attend such courses and pass such tests as may be required by the Academic Council.The prizes are tenable for one year, and candidates are required to pay University fees andtuition fees.

The decision of the Governing Authority as to the awarding or withholding of any prize,or as to the eligibility of any candidate therefor, or as to any deduction to be madetherefrom, shall be final and conclusive.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

Scholarships on the results of examinations in Social Science will be offered inaccordance with the regulations governing the award of scholarships in the Faculty ofArts.

Scholarships on the Results of the First University Examination i nSocial Science and on the Results of the Second U n i v e r s i t yExamination in Social Science:

Scholarships on the results of the First University Examination in Social Science and ofthe Second University Examination in Social Science, of the value of €635 each, will beawarded on a subject basis.

To qualify for a scholarship on the results of the First University Examination in SocialScience, a student must obtain first place and First Class Honours in the subject togetherwith at least a Second Class Honours in a second subject. On the results of the SecondUniversity Examination in Social Science, a student must obtain first place and FirstClass Honours in the subject with at least a Second Class Honours, Grade I in the othersubject.

A student may be awarded more than one scholarship. A scholarship may be dividedbetween students deemed to be ex aequo on the examination results.

On the Results of the First University Examination in Social Science:- One scholarship may be awarded in the subject Information Studies;- One scholarship may be awarded in the subject Sociology;- One scholarship may be awarded in the subject Social Policy;- One scholarship may be awarded in Arts subjects in competition with Arts students.

On the Results of the Second University Examination in Social Science:- One scholarship may be awarded in each of the subjects Sociology, Social Policy

and Information Studies;- Scholarships in Arts subjects will be offered in competition with Second Arts

students.

M u s i c

Scholarships in Music will be awarded in accordance with the regulations governing theaward of scholarships in the Faculty of Arts.

Higher Diploma in Religious Education

Two prizes are offered each year on the results of the First Year Examination and twoprizes on the results of the Final Year Examination for the Higher Diploma in ReligiousEducation, provided a sufficiently high standard is reached.

Patrick Semple Medals

These medals commemorate Professor Patrick Semple, the first Dean of the Faculty ofArts (1909-1948). (Award of the medals is conditional on the availability of funding

examinations as follows:

Mode IThe medals will be awarded to registered students who pass the Second UniversityExamination and secure either: (a) First place and First Class Honours, or (b) First placeand at least Second Class Honours, Grade I in the one subject which constitutes the degreecourse.

Modes II and IIIThe medals may be awarded to registered students who pass the Second UniversityExamination and secure either: (a) First place and First Class Honours in one subject withat least a Second Class Honours, Grade II in the other subject (Mode II) or subjects (ModeIII); or (b) First place with at least Second Class Honours, Grade I in one subject andSecond Class Honours, Grade II in the other subject (Mode II) or subjects (Mode III).

Scholarships on the Results of the BA and the BSocSc D e g r e eE x a m i n a t i o n s :

Postgraduate students proceeding to a higher degree at this University may be awardedscholarships of €2,540 per annum on the results of the BA and the BSocSc Degreeexaminations. Subject to acceptance on a course and to satisfactory compliance with thenormal requirements for completing a course, the scholarships are tenable for a maximumof two years' consecutive full-time study in the case of the Master's Degrees listed below,a maximum of three years’ consecutive full-time study in the case of the PhD and amaximum of three years’ full-time study, with consecutive registration, in the case of astudent who pursues a Master's Degree immediately followed by the PhD in the areascovered by the degrees listed below.

Master of Arts Master of EducationMaster of Literature Master of Equality StudiesMaster of Philosophy Master of Guidance and CounsellingMaster of Social Science Master of Library and Information StudiesMaster of Development Studies Master of Psychological Science

Renewal of the scholarship will be conditional on satisfactory progress reports from theProfessor supervising the student.

To qualify for a postgraduate scholarship, a student must:(a) have attained First Class Honours in both subjects at the Honours Degree

Examination, or(b) have attained first place and First Class Honours in one subject and not less than a

Second Class Honours, Grade I standard in the other subject.

Students taking the four-year BA (International) programme may not be considered under(b) in competition with students taking the three-year BA degree programme. However,in the event that no student following the three-year degree programme is awarded thescholarship in a subject, such scholarship may be awarded to a candidate following theBA (International) programme who reaches the required standard.

This regulation will also apply to students following the four-year BSocSc(International) programme.

Students taking the four-year BA (International) or BSocSc (International) programmewho have attained first place and First Class Honours in one subject and not less thanSecond Class Honours, Grade I standard in the other subject, and who are not awarded ascholarship under the above regulations, may together be considered for the award of onePostgraduate Scholarship.

FACULTY OF COMMERCE

In the case of semesterisedsubjects, regulation no. 4 (that all subjects be passed at one sitting) does notapply but all such subjects must be passed at the first attempt.

Actuarial and Financial Studies

One scholarship of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations.

One scholarship of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations.

One scholarship of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 3 examinations.

Bachelor of Science (Economics and Finance)

One scholarship of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations.

One scholarship of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations.

Business and Legal Studies (Inter-Faculty Degree)

Two scholarships of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations.

Two scholarships of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations.

Two scholarships of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 3 examinations.

Six scholarships of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations.

Five scholarships of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations.

Commerce (International)

One scholarship of €635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations.

POSTGRADUATE AWARDS

Business and Legal Studies

One scholarship of €2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examination,subject to the following conditions:

(i) Candidates must have attained a high honours standard in the BBLS DegreeExamination passed as a whole in the previous session;

(ii) Candidates must proceed to attend a full-time course leading to a Master's Degreein either Law or Commerce.

Commerce and Commerce (International)

Three scholarships of €2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examinations.A further €211 will be paid to a holder who obtains the Master's Degree within the normalperiod specified by the Faculty.

One scholarship only may be awarded in any one mode or language. In the event that nocandidate achieves the minimum criteria for an award in any mode or language, this awardmay be transferred to a qualified candidate in another mode or language.

Candidates must:(i) have passed the BComm Degree Examination as a whole in the previous session;(ii) have gained a standard of First Class Honours at the Degree Examination;(iii) proceed to attend full-time courses leading to a Master's Degree in the Faculty of

Commerce at this University, and must not attend any other courses.

Bachelor of Science (Economics and Finance)

One scholarship of €2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examination,subject to the following conditions:

(i) Candidates must have obtained a high honours standard in the BSc (Economics andFinance) Degree Examination passed as a whole in the previous session;

(ii) Candidates must attend a full-time course leading to a Master’s Degree inCommerce.

Bachelor of Actuarial and Financial Studies

One scholarship of €2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examination,subject to the following conditions:

(i) Candidates must have obtained a high honours standard in the BAFS DegreeExamination passed as a whole in the previous session;

(ii) Candidates must attend a full-time course leading to a Master’s Degree inCommerce.

One scholarship of €635 in each of the branches: Agricultural and Food Engineering;Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electronic and Electrical Engineering;Mechanical Engineering; Civil/Mechanical Engineering.

Third Year Scholarships:

Provided a standard of First Class Honours is attained, the following awards may be madeon the results of the Second University Examination in Engineering:

Scholarships on the results of the First University Examination in Science will beawarded on a subject basis. One scholarship, of value €635, may be awarded in each ofthe following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Experimental Physicsand Geology. For these scholarships, Mathematics and Mathematical Physics will betaken into consideration only as support subjects.

In Honours Mathematics and Honours Mathematical Physics, one scholarship each willbe awarded jointly with the results of the same subjects in the Faculty of Arts and underthe same rules.

To qualify for a scholarship in a subject on the results of the First UniversityExamination in Science, a student must attain First Place and First Class Honours in thesubject concerned together with a minimum standard of a good Second Class Honours inanother of his/her four subjects.

On the results of the Third University Examination (Honours) in Science in the four-yearjoint Honours degree courses, one scholarship of €635 will be awarded. To qualify for thescholarship, a student must gain first place and reach a standard equivalent to First ClassHonours in the joint subjects, having obtained the equivalent of not less than First ClassHonours in one subject and at least a good Second Class Honours in the other subject.

AGRICULTURE

Agricultural Economics Society of Ireland Award

The Agricultural Economics Society of Ireland has kindly agreed to fund an annual awardto recognise the longstanding relationship between the Society and the graduates of theFaculty of Agriculture, University College Dublin. The award will consist of a medal anda small monetary amount (approximately €127). It will be presented annually to theAgribusiness and Rural Development student who, having passed the BAgrSc DegreeExamination in toto at the first attempt, obtains the highest combined marks in thefourth year courses 'Enterprise Development' and 'Food and Farm Input Marketing'.

Agricultural Trust Prize in Landscape Horticulture

A prize of €254 is awarded on the recommendation of an Assessment Committee, basedon examination results and the candidate's performance in undergraduate course work onthe Landscape Horticulture programme.

Patrick Dempsey Memorial Prize

This prize is funded by the family of the late Patrick Dempsey, who lectured in theDepartment of Horticulture from 1970 until his untimely death in 1985. The prize, of theannual value of approximately €381, is awarded to the most outstanding student in thesubject Plant Materials and who also reaches a sufficiently high standard in the overallexamination. In the event that no student reaches sufficiently high standards, the prizemay be withheld.

F.B.D. Trust Educational Award in Landscape Horticulture

A prize of up to €635 will be awarded on the recommendation of an AssessmentCommittee for the best group study proposal in a subject area of relevance to thedevelopment of Landscape Horticulture in rural Ireland. The award will be used to financea group study tour concerned with the project and to contribute towards the production anddistribution costs of the final report.

Fertiliser Association of Ireland - Soil Science Award

The award, established by the Fertiliser Association of Ireland, will be presented to thestudent who obtains the best mark in the Soil Science examination in Second YearAgricultural Science. The value of the award is €381 along with a commemorative plaque.

Garden Centre Association Trust Perpetual Award

The prize, established by the English Garden Centre Association Trust, is offeredannually to the best student in the Horticultural Science course, 'Nursery and GardenCentre Management'. It comprises an engraved solid silver salver mounted in Irish bogoak together with a nominal value book token. The trophy will remain the property ofthe Trust and a condition of the award is that it be held at University College Dublin forannual presentation.

Ian Gordon Award

This award, which is in the form of a medal, is presented annually to the student whoobtains first place in the area of Animal Physiology in the Third Agricultural ScienceExamination having passed the examination as a whole.

Thomas Henry Foundation

This trust provides financial assistance in the sciences and practice of Agriculture,Horticulture and Veterinary Medicine to persons born, or ordinarily resident, in NorthernIreland.

In the case of postgraduate students undertaking research in the designated areas,application is made by the University on behalf of a student. A detailed proposal of theresearch project to be undertaken must be submitted.

In the case of undergraduate students, who must have been born or be ordinarily residentin Northern Ireland, application may be made directly to the trust before 1st July in anyyear to: The Secretary, Thomas Henry Foundation, 31 The Terrace, Downpatrick, Co.Down BT30 6EH, Northern Ireland. Scholarships are awarded by the Foundation on acompetitive basis.

Patrick Hogan Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of approximately €254 is awarded annually to commemorate the latePatrick Hogan, first Minister for Agriculture in the Irish Free State. The award is made onthe results of the Third University Examination in Agricultural Science. No studentholding a scholarship or bursary exceeding €635 in value is eligible for the scholarship.The scholarship may be withheld in any year if no candidate obtains a sufficiently highstandard.

Hussey Prize in Agribusiness

The money subscribed by members of the Agricultural Science Association on theretirement of the late Mr F.P. Hussey, BAgrSc, in appreciation of his years of service(1926-1961) on the teaching staff of the Faculty of Agriculture, was, at Mr Hussey's ownrequest, handed over to the University to form a prize fund. The Hussey Prize inAgribusiness is awarded annually to the Agribusiness and Rural Development student who

obtains the highest aggregate marks in the subjects Agricultural Policy and FarmBusiness Management in the Fourth University Examination in Agricultural Science. Astudent receiving this prize will not be eligible to receive the Agricultural EconomicsSociety of Ireland Award.

Irish Fertilizer Industry Prize for Professional Work Experience

Three awards of equal merit are awarded to students in the degree programmes, Animal andCrop Production (two awards) and Animal Science (one award). The awards wereestablished to acknowledge excellence achieved by students during their ProfessionalWork Experience programme.

Irish Landscape Institute Design Award

The Irish Landscape Institute established the Design Award to acknowledge excellence inlandscape design undertaken by Fourth Year Landscape Horticulture students and Masterof Landscape Architecture students. A prize of a minimum value of €127, together with acertificate, will be awarded to the student who, in the opinion of a judging panel, hasprepared an outstanding design project.

Irish Tillage and Land Use Society Award

The Irish Tillage and Land Use Society funds an annual award in the BagrSc DegreeExamination for the student obtaining the highest marks in the subject 'Crop Husbandry'.Currently, the value of the award is €635. Qualification for the award follows the normalprotocol. The award is based on the overall mark for the subject and should not beavailable to any student/graduate who has already been awarded a prize in any of theindividual components which make up the subject Crop Husbandry.

Canon Kennedy Fund

A donation was received in 1943 from Very Rev. M.J. Canon Kennedy, PP, Cloghan, forthe promotion of Agricultural Science. It formed the nucleus of a fund to be spent by thePresident at his discretion on the promotion of Agricultural Science in the University andpreferably by helping needy students in pursuing courses in Agriculture. Applicationswith full particulars should be made to the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture.

McGuckian Medal and Study Travel Grant

This award is made to the student who obtains first place in Animal and Crop Productionor Animal Science in the BAgrSc Degree Examination. The travel grant of the value of€635 is payable to enable the candidate to observe, at first hand, agriculture outside ofIreland. The travel itinerary will be drawn up and approved by the Heads of theDepartment of Animal Science and Production and the Department of Crop Science,Horticulture and Forestry.

Paul Mulhere Award

This award was established in memory of Paul Mulhere, a member of staff in the Facultyof Agriculture, who died following an injury sustained during a hurling game at CrokePark in November 1985. The award which comprises a silver medal and a monetary prize,is presented annually to the student who, having passed the BAgrSc Degree Examination,gains the highest marks in the Crop Breeding component of the subject Crop Husbandry.

William O'Connell Award

This award was established in memory of William (Bill) O'Connell, a member of staff inthe Faculty of Agriculture at the University, who died in October 1989. The award willtake the form of a medal and a prize of €127 to be presented annually to the studentscoring the highest marks in the subject Animal Nutrition I in the BAgrSc Degreeprogramme.

Universal Floral Display Award

The prize, established by Universal Floral Display Limited (Indoor Plant DecorSpecialists), will be offered annually to the student who gains first place in the subjectInterior Plantscaping. The prize is valued at €381.

Archaeology

Ruaidhri de Valera Memorial Prize

The income from funds subscribed as a memorial to the late Ruaidhri de Valera, Professorof Celtic Archaeology in University College Dublin from 1957 to 1978, is used to awarda prize.

This prize, known as the 'Ruaidhri de Valera Memorial Prize', is awarded to the studentwho obtains the highest marks in Archaeology in the MA Degree Examination with theaward of First Class Honours. The annual value of the prize is approximately €445 butmay vary in the light of the current state of the fund.

Michael Herity Award

The income from funds subscribed on the retirement of Professor Michael Herity, whotaught in the Department of Archaeology in University College Dublin from 1961 to1994, is used to award a prize.

The prize is awarded to the student who obtains first place with First Class Honours in theSecond Year examinations in Archaeology. The annual value of the prize variesdepending on the current state of the fund.

Celtic Studies

Osborn Joseph Bergin (1873-1950), Professor of Early and Medieval Irish at UniversityCollege Dublin from 1909 to 1940, is remembered as 'the prince of native Irish scholars'.His renown which was worldwide drew scholars and students to his lectures from all parts.Professor Vernam Hull of Harvard University, who studied with Bergin, endowed thisprize in his memory.

Máire MacNeill (1904-1987), daughter of Eoin MacNéill, took her BA in Celtic Studies atUniversity College Dublin in 1923. She joined the staff of the Irish FolkloreCommission in 1935 where she worked until 1949. Her book, The Festival of Lughnasa(1962), is a classic in the field of Irish folkloristics.

The Máire MacNeill Scholarship may be awarded annually to qualified students intendingto take up postgraduate studies in the subject, Irish Folklore, at University CollegeDublin or to those already engaged in such studies.

Classics

Thomas Callaghan Scholarship

This scholarship is named in memory of Thomas Callaghan, a graduate in Classics of theUniversity. The scholarship of up to €3,810 will be awarded to a student who hasdemonstrated outstanding performance in Greek or Latin in First and Second Arts. Theaward will be paid annually in two phases:

1 . In December, the first half will be awarded on the basis of outstanding performance inthe First Arts examination and progress in Second Arts.

2 . In July, the same candidate will be eligible for the second half on the basis ofoutstanding performance in the Second Arts examination.

If there are two candidates judged to be ex aequo, the award may be divided or apportionedif there is a second candidate who is very close.

Richmond Prize

The Richmond Prize was established in 1993 in honour of John A. Richmond, a memberof the University staff from 1966 and Professor of Greek from 1980 to 1990. This bursary will be awarded annually to the woman student who gains the highest placein the Higher Diploma in Education Examination.

Alan Bliss Prize

This prize is named in memory of Alan J. Bliss, Professor of Old and Middle English atthe University from 1974 to 1985, and is funded from the royalties of Professor Bliss'sedition of Finn and Hengest by J.R.R. Tolkien (sometime Rawlinson and BosworthProfessor of Anglo-Saxon and Merton Professor of English Language at the University ofOxford), published by Allen and Unwin in 1982.

The prize is to be awarded annually to the student who, having passed the SecondUniversity Examination in Arts, records the highest mark in the subject Old and MiddleEnglish, provided a standard of at least Second Class Honours, Grade I, is attained.

Anglo-Irish Bank Scholarship

A scholarship of €3,810 per annum, tenable in the first instance for two years and subjectto annual review, is offered to a graduate of a master's programme in Anglo-IrishLiterature and Drama taken at this University. The graduate will be a person who wishesto proceed to a doctoral programme in the Department of Anglo-Irish Literature andDrama or one who has already embarked on that programme.

The scholarship will be offered at intervals to be determined by the Anglo-Irish Bank.Candidates for the award should submit a thesis proposal, or else sample chapters from athesis already begun, to the Professor of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama by the deadlinedate designated for each award. Applicants may be asked to report for an interview with apanel of assessors on the topic.

There are no application forms. Mary Colum Award

This award, which is intended for a female student, has been established as a result of abequest made by the late Padraic Colum, the Irish poet, in memory of his wife, MaryColum. The award, of the annual value of approximately €3,048, is tenable for one yearby a woman graduate of University College Dublin for the purpose of undertakingpostgraduate studies in English.

The winner of the award shall be selected each year from among the female candidatesaccepted by the Department of English to undertake postgraduate studies leading to theMA, MLitt or PhD Degree. The following criteria shall be used by the Professor ofEnglish in the selection:

(a) The performance of the eligible candidates at the BA Degree Examination in thesubject English. Candidates who have taken the MA Qualifying Examination arealso eligible for consideration, provided they are graduates of the University. Thelevel of honours required shall be at least Second Class Honours, Grade I standard inEnglish.

(b) Research topics shall also be considered, and eligible candidates whose researchtopics are deemed to have a comparative literature component shall be givenpreference.

In assessing the sum to be awarded to the candidates, the following possible other awardswill be taken into consideration first:(i) Higher Education Grants or similar grants or scholarships;(ii) University Scholarships and Prizes, and tutorial payments.

Brother Galvin Medal

This medal is awarded to the past student of the O'Connell schools who obtains thehighest marks in English at the First University Examination in Arts. It commemoratesthe Golden Jubilee of Rev. Brother J.S. Galvin in the Order of the Irish ChristianBrothers. Candidates must signify their intention of competing for the medal to theRegistrar of the University before 1 February.

Charlotte Kelleher Memorial Award

This book prize, donated by the family and classmates of Charlotte Kelleher (MA: 1933),may be awarded annually to the candidate placed highest in the examinations for the MADegree in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama, with an award of not less than Second ClassHonours.

T. Augustine Martin Memorial Award

This prize is named in memory of T. Augustine Martin, Professor of Anglo-IrishLiterature and Drama at UCD from 1979 to 1995. It was raised by Bright Boy Productionsat an event held in Newman House in May 1997 to which a large team of peoplegenerously contributed their energies and talents. To this sum was added a substantialamount anonymously contributed by a friend and former student of Professor Martin.

It may be awarded annually to the candidate placed highest in the examinations for theMA Degree in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama, with an award of not less than SecondClass Honours.

Denis Bethell Memorial Prizes

A Bethell Trust Fund was established by the friends, brothers and nephew of DenisBethell, lecturer in medieval history, who died on 15 February 1981.

1 . A Bethell book prize is awarded annually to the best day student in the SecondUniversity Examination in Arts.

2 . Another book prize is awarded from the Trust Fund to the evening student who doesbest in the Level 2 Examination.

Curtis Memorial Prize (Irish History)

The money subscribed as a memorial to the late Professor Edmund Curtis (1881-1943),having been entrusted to the Royal Irish Academy, the Council of the Academy decided touse the income to award a prize of €127, or such sum as the Council may direct, thefrequency of the award to be determined by the financial position of the fund. Theconditions governing the award are as follows:

1 . The prize will be awarded for an essay on Irish History which must be based onoriginal research or be a work of original interpretation.

2 . Candidates for the prize must be graduates of a university. Candidates over the age of30 must have completed their primary degree within the previous seven years.

3 . Those who wish to be candidates must submit their essays not later than 1 January ofthe year in which an award is to be made. The essay must be in typescript or print,securely bound, must not normally exceed 10,000 words and must contain a fullbibliography.

Edwards/Arkins Medal (Irish History)

This medal is awarded in memory of Dr R. Dudley Edwards, Professor of Modern IrishHistory (1944-1979), and in memory of Mr Thomas Arkins, MA, LLB, to the student whoobtains the highest marks in Irish History in the First University Examination in Artswith an award of honours in History.

T.P. MacDonnell Memorial Fund

This fund was established to promote historical scholarship by bequest of Mrs ElizabethMaria MacDonnell (née O'Donnell), 1891-1966, in memory of her husband, Dr T.P.MacDonnell, Athlone, 1893-1938.

The sum to be provided, to assist the publication of historical works by graduates ofUniversity College Dublin, is at the discretion of the trustees, taking into account thestate of the fund. The trustees shall not assist the publication unless the Professor ofModern History in University College Dublin shall certify the proposed application asappropriate for assistance.

Applicants claiming benefit must make application in writing to the trustees (c/o TheRegistrar, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4). Applications should beaccompanied by the historical work which the applicant desires to be published, with astatement of the cost of the publication so far as the applicant is aware, and the amount ofassistance desired from the fund. Upon deciding to make any grant from the fund, thetrustees shall pay the grant directly to the printer or publisher, not to the applicant.

F.X. Martin Medal (Medieval History)

This medal was endowed by the friends and colleagues of Professor F.X. Martin, OSA,Professor of Medieval History (1962-1988), to mark his retirement. The medal will beawarded annually to the student obtaining first place in Medieval History in the SecondYear Examination.

Kevin B. Nowlan Award

The Combined Departments of History offer an annual prize to the student who is awardedthe highest A1 mark in History in the Leaving Certificate Examination, and who thencomes immediately to study History in UCD.

Desmond Ryan Memorial Scholarship for Travel Abroad ( M o d e r nHistory, Modern Irish History)

The scholarship, in memory of Desmond Ryan who contributed substantially to theknowledge of Modern History and Modern Irish History, is intended to assist towards thecost of a visit, or visits, abroad by the successful candidate. The purpose is to fosterintellectual development through foreign travel for research purposes. In the selection of

a candidate, preference will be given to an applicant in need of financial assistance whocomplies with the following conditions of award.

The scholarship will be awarded on the results of the BA Degree Examination to thecandidate:(a) who reaches a standard of at least Second Class Honours, Grade I in the examination

as a whole;(b) who has taken Modern History or Modern Irish History as one of his/her subjects;(c) who, in the opinion of the Professor concerned, may not have adequate means to

cover travel expenses unaided;(d) who, if awarded the scholarship, proceeds to take the MA Degree or MLitt Degree in

either Modern History or Modern Irish History.

Candidates satisfying the above requirements should apply for the scholarship before 31October in a year when the scholarship is on offer. Application forms may be obtainedfrom: Examinations Office, University College Dublin, Michael Tierney Building,Belfield, Dublin 4. The successful candidate will be required to submit, for approval tothe Professors of Modern History and Modern Irish History, a research project for whichsome essential source material is available abroad. Upon completion of the study abroad,the student awarded the scholarship will be required to produce satisfactory evidence ofthe research undertaken abroad before the final instalment of the scholarship will bepayable. The research may be connected with the studies for the MA Degree or MLittDegree.

The funds for the award of the scholarship will come from investments held by thetrustees for this purpose. The scholarship will normally be awarded every three years.The value will be approximately €1,143.

The capital sum to finance this scholarship was bequeathed to Professor Patrick Lynch ofUniversity College Dublin by the late Mrs Sarah E. Ryan. The trustees of the fund areAllied Irish Banks Limited.

Maureen Wall Memorial Medal and Book Prize

These awards have been endowed by the friends of the late Mrs Maureen Wall, Lecturer inModern Irish History, who died in June 1972.

1 . The Maureen Wall Memorial Medal will be awarded annually to the student whoobtains first place (with First or Second Class Honours) in History at the SecondUniversity Examination in Arts.

Donal Byrne Memorial Prize

This prize was established in recognition of the achievement of Dr Donal Byrne, agraduate of the University and a distinguished historian of medieval art. Dr Byrne, whodied in August 1988, bequeathed his collection of books to the Françoise Henry ReadingRoom in the Department of the History of Art. The prize of €96, to be used in thepurchase of books, will be awarded annually to the undergraduate student who takes firstplace in the History of Art Second Arts Examination, provided a standard of at leastSecond Class Honours, Grade I is attained.

Françoise Henry Memorial Prizes

These two prizes were established in 1988 to mark the contribution of the late DrFrançoise Henry, both as a teacher and as an historian of Irish art. Dr Henry founded theDepartment of the History of Art in the University and for many years gave the course ofpublic lectures on the History of European Painting associated with the Purser-GriffithScholarships (see page 67). The prizes of €96 and €26 will be awarded annually to theundergraduate students who take first and second place respectively in the History of ArtFirst Arts Examination, provided a standard of at least Second Class Honours is attained.

Library and Information Studies

Wilson Foundation Awards

These awards were established as a result of a grant in 1993 from the Wilson Foundation.The W.H. Wilson Company publishes a range of library resources, including referenceworks, collection development tools, abstracts and indexes in print and electronicformats.

1 . Wilson medals may be awarded annually to the students who obtain first place in thefollowing courses, subject to the discretion of the Head of the Department of Libraryand Information Studies:(i) The Higher Diploma in Library and Information Studies;(ii) The Master of Library and Information Studies - in order to be eligible for

consideration theses must be submitted to the Examinations Office by therequired date in November.

2 . An occasional small grant to enable a student of Library and Information Studies toattend a conference or to travel for research purposes may be awarded. Applicationshould be made to the Head of the Department of Library and Information Studies.

Mathematical Physics

Conway Medal

This medal commemorates Arthur W. Conway (1875-1950), Professor of MathematicalPhysics in the University, Registrar (1908-1940) and President (1940-1947). ProfessorConway was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Pontifical Academy ofSciences, and President of the Royal Irish Academy (1937-1940). He made fundamentalcontributions in electromagnetism, relativity, atomic physics, quantum mechanics,partial differential equations and in the applications of quaternions.

The medal is awarded to the student who obtains First Class Honours in the BSc HonoursDegree Examination and who obtains the highest average mark on four papers inMathematical Physics at that examination.

Keating Prize

This prize was established in memory of George Keating, Professor of MathematicalPhysics (1940-1972).

The prize (currently a book token valued €130) is awarded to the candidate who obtainsFirst Class Honours in Mathematical Physics Studies in the Second Arts SummerExamination or in Mathematical Physics in the Second Science Summer Examination andwho obtains first place in Mathematical Physics Studies (Arts) / Mathematical PhysicsHonours (Science), at those examinations.

McCrea Medal

This medal commemorates Rev. Dr J.D. McCrea, OFM (1934-1993), an acknowledgedexpert on Einstein's Theory of Relativity, who introduced into UCD Modern RelativityTheory and the coordinate-free approach to Differential Geometry. Dr McCrea taught inthe Mathematical Physics Department from 1968 until his death. The medal, endowed bythe Irish Franciscans and graduates of the Mathematical Physics Department and staff, i sawarded to the student who obtains First Class Honours in the MA/MSc DegreeExaminations with the highest marks in Relativity Theory.

Orr Prize

This prize commemorates William McFadden Orr, MRIA, FRS, formerly Professor of Pureand Applied Mathematics in University College Dublin. Professor Orr made fundamentalcontributions to the understanding of the stability of fluid flow.

This prize was established in memory of Fr. Ciaran Ryan, a leading authority on weakinteractions of elementary particles, who taught Theoretical Physics in UCD until hisdeath in a climbing accident in 1973.

Cardinal Connell Educational Fund

This fund was established from the personal resources of the Most Reverend DesmondConnell, DD, Professor of Metaphysics at the University (1972-1988), to advanceteaching and study in the science or discipline of philosophy or theology in the writingsof St. Thomas Aquinas and, in particular, to enable and assist graduates of UniversityCollege Dublin to conduct and publish such research. This prize was established in accordance with the will of the late Mrs J.F. Conor Martin Memorial Prizes

Two prizes have been established by the friends and colleagues of the late ReverendProfessor Conor Martin, who was Professor of Ethics and Politics from 1952 until hisdeath in 1980.

The John Whyte Fund

This fund was established in 1991 in memory of John Whyte who was lecturer, reader andprofessor of Irish politics at Queen's University from 1966 to 1984 and professor ofPolitics at University College Dublin from 1984 to 1990. Grants from the fund, whichwill be awarded annually, are intended to encourage students to cross the border to learnmore about Irish politics and as such will be available to graduates in Politics fromQueen's University or University College Dublin who wish to spend a period at the otherinstitution undertaking research or postgraduate study in Irish Politics. The Thérèse Brady Medal in Clinical Psychology

The Thérèse Brady Medal in Clinical Psychology is a medal awarded to the student whocompletes a dissertation for the DPsychSc Degree and who also exemplifies, in theopinion of the examiners, the greatest clinical sensitivity. This medal is entitled 'The

Thérèse Brady Medal in Clinical Psychology' to honour the memory of the late MsThérèse Brady (the first Course Director of the MPsychSc Degree Programme in UCDwhich was a forerunner of the present doctoral programme). Throughout her own clinicaland professional work, Thérèse Brady strived towards the attainment of clinicalsensitivity as a personal and professional ambition for herself and all clinicalpsychologists in training. The current doctoral programme in clinical psychology owesan enormous debt to Ms Brady, and this medal in some small way recognises theprogramme's and the University's appreciation of her work.

This medal does not include any financial award but stands as an award of achievement andexcellence in the field of clinical expertise. The medal was first awarded in October 2000.It is not an annual award but is awarded at the discretion of the examiners in any givenyear.

Miscellaneous Award

Archbishop Walsh Memorial Prize*

1 . This prize is awarded annually to the candidate obtaining the highest place in orderof merit on the MLitt Degree.

2 . Candidates must have attained First Class Honours standard. The MLitt Degree mustbe taken within five years from the date of entry to this University. The courses forthe BA and MLitt Degrees must be pursued at this University.

3 . The prize is offered annually by rotation in the following groups:2003 Literature of any one continental language which is a subject for the MLitt

Degree.2004 History (including Early Irish History for students in the Faculty of Celtic

Alasdair McCabe Prize

This prize in the School of Architecture has been endowed by the Educational BuildingSociety as a tribute to Mr Alasdair McCabe, the founder and former Managing Director ofthe Society. The prize will be awarded annually to a student of Architecture to enable thestudent to undertake a programme of study in the Summer vacation of either third or fourthyear on some aspect of housing, to be selected by the applicant. Students who wish to beconsidered for the award must submit a programme of study to the Supervisor ofExaminations by the specified date in the year in which they sit for the Third UniversityExamination. The applicants will be interviewed by a board consisting of the intern andextern examiners. The award will be given to the systematic and practical work of thecandidates. The prize of approximately €953 will be paid as follows: €635 when thewinner takes up the award, the balance to be paid on the receipt of a satisfactory reportwhich should be submitted to the Professor of Architecture by the opening of thefollowing session. In the event of the prize being withheld in any year, the prize moneyshall be added to the capital sum.

MacCarthy Memorial Scholarship

A sum was bequeathed by the late Charles J. MacCarthy for the provision of a scholarshipin connection with architectural studies in the University in memory of his father, JamesJoseph MacCarthy, Professor of Architecture in the Catholic University. Thisscholarship may be awarded annually. The purpose is to enable a student to undertake aprogramme of study in the Summer vacation of either third or fourth year. The annualvalue of the scholarship is approximately €953.

Students who desire to be considered for an award must signify their intention ofcompeting and submit a programme of study to the Supervisor of Examinations not laterthan 1 June of the year in which they sit for the Third University Examination inArchitecture. Those applicants who qualify by a very good performance at the ThirdUniversity Examination will then be interviewed by a board consisting of the intern andextern examiners. The award will be made on the result of this interview.

A payment of €635 will be made to the winner of the scholarship as soon as the award i staken up (i.e. June/July of third or fourth year). The student will be required to submit asatisfactory report, with drawings, covering work as holder of the scholarship to theProfessor of Architecture. The balance will be paid on receipt of this report. If thewinner of the scholarship postpones the holding of it to the fourth year, the award will besubject to satisfactory attendance and performance in that year.

Michael O'Connor Heritage Prize

This prize of the annual value of approximately €254 is awarded in Regional and UrbanPlanning/Architecture on an alternating basis. In 2003, it will be competed for bystudents in Architecture.

Bruce Shortt Memorial Prize

Bank of Ireland Prizes

Since 1977, the Bank of Ireland has generously sponsored medals and prizes for the topthree students in the First BCL Constitutional Law Examination; the Second BCL EU LawEssay, as decided by the current external adjudicator; and the BCL Degree Examination inJurisprudence. Gold, silver and bronze medals are presented to the students in each of theabove subjects along with the following corresponding cash prizes of €317.43, €126.97and €95.23.

The Professor James C. Brady Memorial Prize in Equity

This annual prize commemorates James C. Brady (1940-1998), Professor of the Law ofProperty and Equity in University College Dublin. It was established in 2001 by theJames C. Brady Memorial Trust as a tribute to Professor Brady and his skills in teachingand research in the field of equity and trusts.

The prize (currently a gold medal and a cheque for €250) is awarded to the student who,having passed the final year law exams, attains first place in the Equity examination.

The Butterworths Law Prize

Butterworths publications to the value of €127 are awarded annually to the student whotakes first place in the First University Examination in Civil Law.

EBS Building Society Prize in Land Law

This prize, a gold medal and €317, is funded by the EBS Building Society and is awardedto the student who obtains the highest mark in the subject Land Law and Succession inthe Second BCL Examination.

Irish Legal History Society Postgraduate Award

The Society has established a postgraduate award which will enable a person to enrol for afull-time PhD by research jointly in the Queen's University of Belfast and UniversityCollege Dublin. For formal reasons, the student concerned will register with, andgraduate from, one or other university but in substance the award will be held jointly inboth universities. The award will cover all tuition fees and provide a subsistenceallowance of €6,349 per annum; financial assistance towards the cost of travel betweenBelfast and Dublin and for other purposes connected with research will also be available.

The award will be open to graduates of any university in law or history who have a goodhonours degree (First Class or 2.1 Honours) and are qualified to undertake research in Irishlegal history. It is expected that applicants will normally be graduates of Irish

universities but the Society does not wish to preclude suitably qualified applicants fromelsewhere. It is not intended that an award should be limited to research in any particularfield of law but the Society reserves the right to determine the suitability of the proposedresearch. The holder of the award will be jointly supervised by members of the School ofLaw in both institutions and will spend roughly one half of his or her time in eachinstitution. Both universities require at least two years' study for the degree of PhD butthe normal period for completion of the thesis is anticipated to be three years. It i sexpected that the completed thesis (or an edited version of it) will be suitable forpublication.

The holder of an award will receive research training and supervision from seniormembers of both law schools. He or she will also be invited to assist in the teaching ofthe Irish Legal History courses which are given in both institutions and in related matterssuch as the preparation of materials and bibliographies.

The Maxwell Law Prize

Publications from Sweet and Maxwell Ltd., London, to the value of €127, are awardedannually to the student who takes first place in the Second University Examination inCivil Law.

Royal and Sun Alliance Gold Medal

The Royal and Sun Alliance Gold Medal is awarded to the student who produces the bestessay in Tort in First BCL as decided by the current external adjudicator. There is anaccompanying cash prize of €419.

Swift McNeill Memorial Prize

The terms of the trust provide for the application of the net annual income (€51approximately) in the award of a prize for competition each year among the students ofKing's Inns, Dublin, who are attending lectures in University College Dublin, in thesubjects prescribed by the Benchers of King's Inns. The prize is to be awarded to thestudent who shall have obtained the highest marks at the annual examination. Provided,however, that in any year there are no students at King's Inns, Dublin, in attendance atthe said lectures as aforesaid, the Governing Authority of University College Dublinshall offer the prize among students of Law of the University, subject to such conditionsas it may think fit.

Geoffrey J. Bourke Medal

This medal, established by Dr Geoffrey J. Bourke, Professor of Public Health Medicineand Epidemiology at the University (1966 - 1994), is awarded annually to the studentwho, having passed the examination of the Fifth Year of Medicine, attains First Place inthe subject 'Public Health Medicine and Epidemiology'.

Surgeon Hugh Boyle Kennedy Bequest

The annual interest on the Surgeon Hugh Boyle Kennedy Bequest is awarded to thecandidate who, having secured honours in the whole Final Medical Examination, obtainsthe highest marks in Surgery for the current year. The present value is approximately€89.

Catholic University Awards

The accumulated assets of the Catholic University of Ireland have been made available bythe trustees to the Governing Authority for the establishment of scholarships to beknown as Catholic University Scholarships and to be held in the University by Catholicstudents in the Faculty of Medicine. The trustees also award prizes out of the MolloyBequest and the Ambrose Birmingham Medal.

Molloy PrizesEstablished to commemorate the Right Reverend Monsignor Molloy, Professor ofPhysics, in the Catholic University of Ireland from 1874 to 1906.

1 . A sum out of the annual income of the Molloy Bequest Fund is devoted to providingprizes in Physics and Chemistry for Catholic Medical students registered in theMedical School of the University.

2 . Subject to any variation in the income from the fund, the number of prizes offered ineach year is two.

3 . One Molloy prize in Physics and one in Chemistry are awarded annually at the end ofthe First Medical Year.

4 . The balance of the annual income from the Molloy Bequest Fund is applied to themaintenance and extension of the Molloy Collection of Physics Apparatus.

Ambrose Birmingham MedalAmbrose Birmingham was Dean and Professor of Anatomy at the Catholic University ofIreland Medical School from 1887 to 1905. Through his zeal and ability, the school wasmodernised and survived the long critical period from 1880 to 1909. The BirminghamMedal is a token of the debt owed by the University for this contribution to thecontinuity of its traditions. This fund has been greatly augmented by gifts from theArchbishops of Dublin. The medal is awarded on the results of a special examination inAnatomy held in Summer. Candidates must have completed the Second Year Medicalcourse.

James B. Coakley Medal for Dissection

This medal is in appreciation of Emeritus Professor James B. Coakley who was Professorof Anatomy from 1962 to 1988. This award has been established in the AnatomyDivision of the Department of Human Anatomy and Physiology. Medical,Physiotherapy and Radiography students, who have completed one year of Anatomy, canenter for this award. The medal will be awarded annually for the best dissection of anassigned specimen carried out by a student during the academic year.

Dillon Memorial Prize

A prize to commemorate the late Professor T.W.T. Dillon, is awarded to the student who,having obtained Honours, also obtains the highest place in the examination forPharmacology at the University examinations in the academic session. The presentvalue is approximately €115.

FitzGerald Medal

This medal was established to commemorate the FitzGerald Brothers - Oliver, Patrick andGerald - who, having graduated with distinction from our Medical School, weresubsequently outstanding as consultants and as teachers.

The medal, which is presented approximately every five years, may be awarded to anyclinician or research worker in the field of the medical sciences on the basis ofsignificant contributions to human well-being in health or disease. These contributionswill have been demonstrated by published material mainly originating in Ireland, as ageographical unit, or by ongoing research work. The award will be made by the Faculty ofMedicine at University College Dublin, from whom further particulars may be obtained.

Dr John F. Keenan Research Scholarship

A travelling scholarship, of the approximate value of €2,540, tenable for one year andpayable out of the Keenan Fund, will be awarded to the candidate selected by a committeeappointed by the Medical Faculty. This scholarship will be awarded as often as fundspermit. Notice of an impending award will be advertised. Candidates must have obtainedhonours in at least one of the medical examinations of the curriculum or have obtainedhonours marks in Medicine, Surgery or Obstetrics in the Final Medical Examination andmust have pursued their whole undergraduate courses in University College Dublin.Candidates must have qualified within the seven years previous to the award. Thescholarship is limited to Irish citizens.

Kirwan Medal and Prize in Ophthalmology

This award has been established from a fund donated by Mrs Mary Kirwan in memory ofher husband, Lt. Col. E.W. O'G. Kirwan, one of the first medical graduates of theUniversity. The medal and prize (approximate value: €445) will be awarded on the resultsof the Fifth University Examination in Medicine in Ophthalmology in Spring combinedwith a special scholarship paper in Ophthalmology, taken prior to the clinical and oralexaminations. A candidate must receive an award of honours to be eligible for the medaland prize. Candidates should enter for this award when entering for the Fifth UniversityExamination in Medicine.

John McGrath Memorial Prize in Pathology and John M c G r a t hMemorial Prize in Legal Medicine

These two prizes have been established by the late Mrs Margaret McGrath in memory ofher husband, the late Professor John McGrath.

This award has been donated by ALLTECH International in honour of its President, DrPearse Lyons, a graduate in Biochemistry from UCD. It will be awarded annually, afterinterview by the company, to a student in the Third Year Honours Biochemistry coursewho is among the most highly placed in Biochemistry in the Second UniversityExamination in Science. The award will enable the student to undertake a programme ofstudy/research at the ALLTECH Biotechnology Centre, Kentucky, USA, for which traveland subsistence allowances will be provided.

Joy Carey Prize

This prize should be awarded annually to the Biochemistry Honours Final Year studentjudged to have written the best project essay.

Conway Medal (Mathematical Physics)

This medal commemorates Arthur W. Conway (1875-1950), Professor of MathematicalPhysics in the University, Registrar (1908-1940) and President (1940-1947). ProfessorConway was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Pontifical Academy ofSciences and President of the Royal Irish Academy (1937-1940). He made fundamentalcontributions to electromagnetism, relativity, atomic physics, quantum mechanics,partial differential equations and in the applications of quaternions.

The medal is awarded to the student who obtains First Class Honours in the BSc HonoursDegree Examination and who obtains the highest average mark on four papers inMathematical Physics at that examination.

Michael G. Harrington Medal

This medal is awarded to the candidate who obtains First Class Honours and first place inthe BSc (Honours) Degree Examination in Biochemistry.

I.C.I. Pharmaceuticals Division Prize in Pharmacology

The prize of €127 is awarded to the candidate who obtains first place in the Final BSc(Honours) Degree Summer Examination in Pharmacology and has reached a minimumstandard of Second Class Honours, Grade I. Dr McCrea taught inthe Mathematical Physics Department from 1968 until his death. Centenary Medal (IVA)

This medal is awarded by Veterinary Ireland at graduation to the candidate with the mostconsistently high marks throughout the course.

Alexandra Colquhoun Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine

A scholarship, of the annual value of €4,444 approximately, has been established bybequest to the University. The scholarship is intended to enable the holder to pursue thedegree course in Veterinary Medicine under the following conditions as laid down by thewill of the donor:

1 . The candidate must be a woman student.2 . The candidate must be an Irish citizen resident in the Republic of Ireland, whose

parents also were citizens of the Republic of Ireland at the time of her birth.3 . The candidate must be a person who, without the benefit of the scholarship, would be

unable to afford to pursue courses at the University to enable her to qualify as aveterinary surgeon.

Devereux Award

The Devereux Award is in memory of Walter (Wally) Devereux (MVB, 1987). This award(of a book voucher and trophy with a value of approximately €191-254) initially for fiveyears from 1998 is to be offered in Equine Surgery and Anaesthesia.

John Freeman Memorial Medal

This medal is awarded at graduation to the candidate who, at his/her first sitting at theUniversity Examinations in Veterinary Medicine, acquires the highest aggregate marksin the following subjects: Animal Husbandry and Production, Microbiology,Parasitology, Pathology and Pharmacology.

John Hannan Medal

This medal is in recognition of the contribution to Veterinary Public Health made by thelate Professor John Hannan, former Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,University College Dublin (1984-1990). Professor Hannan played a leading role in thedevelopment and promotion of Veterinary Public Health and was a leading proponent ofthe discipline at national and international level. He was a member of the inauguralBoard of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Vice-President of the World Association ofVeterinary Food Hygienists and was a Consultant in Food Hygiene to the World HealthOrganisation. He served on numerous other consultative bodies on veterinary educationand related matters.

The John Hannan Medal is to be awarded annually to the student who, having passed therelevant University Examination, obtained the overall highest marks in VeterinaryPublic Health and Food Hygiene.

Thomas Henry Foundation

This trust provides financial assistance in the Sciences and practice of Agriculture,Horticulture and Veterinary Medicine to persons born, or ordinarily resident, in NorthernIreland.

In the case of postgraduate students undertaking research in the designated areas,application is made by the University on behalf of a student. A detailed proposal of theresearch project to be undertaken must be submitted.

In the case of undergraduate students, who must have been born or be ordinarily residentin Northern Ireland, application may be made directly to the trust before 1st July in anyyear to: The Secretary, Thomas Henry Foundation, 31 The Terrace, Downpatrick, Co.Down BT30 6EH, Northern Ireland.

Scholarships are awarded by the Foundation on a competitive basis.

Professor P.A. McGeady Memorial Medal in Veterinary Surgery

This medal is in memory of Professor P.A. McGeady, Dean of the UCD Faculty ofVeterinary Medicine from 1960 to 1972 and Professor of Veterinary Surgery, Obstetricsand Infertility from 1946 until his retirement in 1976. His family have established thismedal as a tribute to Professor McGeady's contribution to the discipline of VeterinarySurgery at UCD, his skills in teaching and his involvement in veterinary educationduring a period of considerable change.

The medal is awarded annually to the candidate who obtains the highest overall mark inthe professional examinations in Veterinary Surgery.

Mullaney Award in Veterinary Microbiology

This award was established by Mrs R. Mullaney, lecturer in Veterinary Virology (1961-1987), on her retirement from University College Dublin.

The award will take the form of a prize to be presented annually to the student obtainingthe highest marks in the subject Veterinary Microbiology in the Third VeterinaryExamination. The general conditions governing University awards will apply.

David O'Connor Memorial Medal – Sportsperson of the Year

This medal was established in memory of David O'Connor, a 1994 Veterinary Medicinehonours graduate. David was actively involved with Gaelic football, soccer and rugby atclub and university level. His enthusiasm, commitment and legendary managementskills are some of the qualities this award aims to commemorate. This medal (andbursary), known as the Veterinary Sportsperson of the Year, will be presented annually toa student in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine who has significant success in sport.

Individual veterinary students or, in exceptional circumstances, teams may be nominatedby students, staff or sports managers within UCD. Nominations must be made to theOffice of the Dean of Veterinary Medicine before the Easter break each year.

A selection committee will make a decision on the recipient of the medal and it will bepresented to the winner in May of each year.

Pharmacia Upjohn Travel Grant

This award will be made to the student who obtains first place in the Final MVB DegreeExamination. The travel grant, of the value of €635, is payable to enable the candidateto observe, at first hand, veterinary and research institutions outside of Ireland. Thetravel itinerary is agreed by the Dean, the sponsor and the successful student.

Training Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

These scholarships which amount to €953 - €1,270 each and cover travel and subsistenceexpenses are awarded annually to second, third and fourth year veterinary students, on therecommendation of an Assessment Committee based on an interview and the candidates'performance in their courses. The scholarships are designed to allow the successfulstudents to work in renowned research laboratories where they can actively engage insome innovative investigation of interest to the livestock and other related industries.They are normally awarded to cover work done during the Summer vacation.

Two scholarships are available, one donated by the Veterinary Council Education TrustFund and one by Intervet (Ireland) Limited.

Wellcome Studentship

Each year the Animal Diseases Research Association (Moredun Research Institute) seeksfunds (approximately €889 per student) from the Wellcome Trust to enable selectedveterinary students to carry out supervised research projects over eight weeks of theSummer vacation. Third and higher year students are eligible to apply to the SelectionCommittee for these awards.

MISCELLANEOUS AWARDS

Father Delany Exhibition*

This exhibition was established in 1908 by private subscription to commemorate theGolden Jubilee of Very Rev. William Delany, SJ, LLD, Rector of University CollegeDublin.

It is open to students who have completed one year, previous to matriculation, at any ofthe following schools: Clongowes Wood, Belvedere, The Crescent (Limerick), Gonzagaand St. Ignatius (Galway). The award is made on the results of the First UniversityExaminations. The present value of the exhibition is €96. Applications from eligiblestudents should be addressed to the Registrar, University College Dublin, MichaelTierney Building, Belfield, Dublin 4, after the announcement of the First UniversitySummer Examination results and not later than 3 September.

Lord Edward Fitzgerald Memorial Fund

The fund was established in 1983 by Roches Stores (Dublin) Limited, to perpetuate thememory of Lord Edward Fitzgerald and his historic connection with Frascati House,Blackrock, Co. Dublin.

An annual bursary of approximately €3,175 for one year may be awarded to enableresearch at the University in: Architecture (Housing), Biotechnology, Business Studies,Electronic Engineering, Environmental Studies, Irish History and Transportation.

Candidates must be born in Ireland, or be of a parent born in Ireland, or have beenordinarily resident in Ireland for at least ten years. They should be recent honoursgraduates and must proceed to take a postgraduate degree in the University. In the case oftwo candidates being equally placed, preference will be given to the candidate born orresiding in the Borough of Dun Laoghaire.

The bursary will be advertised in University publications and in the relevant Universitydepartments. Candidates should apply to the Chairman of the Lord Edward FitzgeraldMemorial Fund before the closing date, which is normally in the Michaelmas term.

Purser Griffith Scholarship and Prize in the History of E u r o p e a nP a i n t i n g

The income from a fund provided by the artist Miss Sarah Purser (1849-1943) and SirJohn Purser Griffith is applied to provide a Travelling Scholarship and Prize in theHistory of European Painting to be competed for in the Trinity term every second year asfrom 1950. The scholarship and prize are awarded to the candidates who achieve first andsecond places respectively in the examination for the Diploma in the History ofEuropean Painting.

The awards listed above may be made on the basis of points achieved by candidates at theLeaving Certificate Examination. Candidates who wish to be considered for these awardsmust lodge a special application form with the Registrar's Office, University CollegeDublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, which is obtainable from the latter office. The applicationform must be lodged before 1 September of the proposed year of entry to the University,and should be accompanied by a birth certificate. Candidates born outside Ireland mustsupply suitable evidence that their home residence is in Ireland. Candidates entering forthe Edmund Byrne Scholarship and the Ward Trust Scholarship should enclose with theirentry, in a separate sealed envelope, evidence of means of parents or guardians. This willbe treated in strict confidence.

Candidates may only apply within one year of sitting the Leaving CertificateExamination.

The awards are also conditional on the winners' subsequent registration in thisUniversity. In this connection, the attention of candidates is drawn to the entryregulations of University College Dublin.

The special regulations governing the awards are as follows:

Edmund Byrne Scholarship*

Preference in the award of this scholarship is given to candidates who otherwise would bewithout sufficient means to pursue their studies. This bursary was established by pupils and friends of the late Rev. Mother Mary EuchariaRyan, Loreto Hall. It is open to students of Loreto schools. It is tenable for three years,subject to satisfactory progress. The present value of the bursary is approximately €64.

The bursary will be awarded to the candidate who obtains the highest mark in Latin orGreek, with an award of at least Grade B3. The candidate must pass in six subjects (whichwill include Latin and/or Greek) at the same Leaving Certificate examination sitting.

Scanlan Scholarship*

This scholarship is of the annual value of about €508 and is tenable for three years in theUniversity. The Dean and Chapter of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe shallnominate not more than three Roman Catholic boys from the diocese to be candidates forthis award. Applications for consideration as candidates should be sent to Rev. Fr. TonyCahir, PP, Birr, Co. Offaly.

The award will be made on the highest aggregate total obtained in the best six subjects -all six subjects passed at the same Leaving Certificate examination sitting.

James L. Ward and Rose Dunlevy Ward Scholarships

Two scholarships were established under a trust set up by the will of James LawrenceWard, late of Malden, Massachusetts, USA. The terms of the trust are as follows:1 . The two scholarships shall be known respectively as the James L. Ward and the Rose

Dunlevy Ward Scholarship. One of these scholarships will normally be availablefor competition every second year.

2 . The annual income of the scholarship shall be the amount of the annual dividendaccruing on the invested capital divided between the two. The value of eachscholarship will be €508 approximately.

3 . The object of the scholarship shall be to enable the holders to take degrees of theNational University of Ireland in Engineering, Science or Agriculture in UniversityCollege Dublin.

4 . The terms of the scholarships shall be four years subject to satisfactory progress ofthe holders in passing in each year the required University Examinations.

5 . The scholarships are intended for persons born in Ireland, the children of parentswho otherwise could not provide the means of a university education.

The award will be made on the highest aggregate total obtained in the six best subjects -all six subjects passed at the same Leaving Certificate examination sitting.
