NEWSLETTER Issue 45 5th April 2019

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – Mark Cooper

Dear parents/guardians,

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Barton community for their

support in Term 1 to make 2019 a great start to the school year. Some great

opportunities that we celebrated were Harmony Day, Kaboom Sports for our Prep

to 2’s, Cross Country for our 3-6’s and our Open Morning just to name a few.

As a Principal class team, we have been amazed by the efforts of all our staff in

delivering an engaging and viable curriculum. The amount of hours dedicated to

each individual student is worth acknowledging. We have been thankful for the

tireless work from all of our new and existing leaders in the school and the work they are doing around,

curriculum, engaging activities, providing multiple exposures to learning and general planning.

Some other information to be aware for the holidays is that our Online Programs, (Mathletics, Reading Eggs,

Wushka, Bug Club etc) can now be accessed with a direct link from the Parent Portal on Sentral. If you click

on the Main Menu and go to Links you will see all the different programs.

First day for Term 2 is on Tuesday the 23rd of April. Anzac Day is in the same week with the public holiday

being Thursday the 25th of April. The Student Representative Council are selling the pins for $1 and the

wristbands for $3 the first week back.

Well done to all the Cross Country Runners last Friday and to those that have been selected in the Barton

Primary School team to represent our school at the District stage. Good luck to all involved.

Below I have provided some information around Road Safety around the school, particularly at the busy times

of school drop off and pick up. I have noticed some habits reforming around some of the issues listed below.

We have had the City of Casey unexpectedly issuing fines around the breach of some of these rules. From a

school prospective I am concerned that an accident will happen if we don’t follow these safety procedures.

Today we farewell our Music Teacher David Taylor who begins at his new School in Term 2. I would like to

thank David for all his contributions to Barton Primary School since opening in 2017. He has been a hard

working member of our team and will be dearly missed. We welcome Tammy Lewis who will be joining us for

the beginning of Term 2 and running our Music Program.

Lastly, as Andrew is away on Long Service Leave, I would like to say on behalf of us both that we hope

everyone has a safe and joyful holiday and everyone gets the chance to refresh and comeback with a growth

mindset in Term 2. Andrew will be back for the first day and we look forward to working with everyone for

successful outcomes for all of our students.

Thanks Mark Cooper

Community Safety around Schools

Why are school crossings important?

Most young children do not have a well-developed sense of danger. Their peripheral (side) vision

and spatial awareness are not fully developed. This makes it difficult for them to properly judge the

safe time required to cross a road. Supervised school crossings were introduced to protect children

from this risk.

Why do we need parking and traffic controls around school crossings?

Crossing supervisors need to have a clear field of vision in all directions around their crossing, so

that they can spot approaching children and vehicles as early as possible to avoid danger.

When cars park too closely to crossings, small children can become difficult to see.

Parking and traffic problems

The most common parking and traffic offenses around schools

are:

Stopping on a children’s crossing

Stopping in a ‘No Stopping’ area

Stopping on the right hand side of a vehicle that is

already parked at the kerb side (i.e. double parking)

Stopping within 10 metres of an intersection

Stopping in a bus zone

Driving through a children’s crossing while a pedestrian is on it

Parking in a ‘No Parking’ area

Parking on a nature strip

What does No Stopping mean?

No stopping means you cannot stop your vehicle for any

purpose, no matter how short the time.

Important!

Please remember that on school days

between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm

and 4pm the speed limit is reduced to

40 km/h.

Page 3: CAPABILITIES. SCHOOL VALUES: OPTIMISM SUCCESS RESPECT … · 2019. 5. 6. · school vision: to prepare each of our students for success in their ever changing future by providing

SCHOOL VISION: TO PREPARE EACH OF OUR STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS IN THEIR EVER CHANGING

FUTURE BY PROVIDING THEM WITH THE NECESSARY SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND GENERAL

CAPABILITIES.

SCHOOL VALUES: OPTIMISM SUCCESS RESPECT DETERMINATION

What does No Parking mean?

No parking means that the area is not a pick up/ drop off

zone. You cannot leave your vehicle unattended. You

cannot park in these zones.

What does a bus zone mean?

A bus zone is an area specifically for buses. You cannot stop there at all.

As a driver what am I required to do around school crossings?

When approaching school crossings slow down to 40 km/h or less. Watch for children and remember

not to stop too close to crossings. The crossing must be completely vacated of all pedestrians before

proceeding. Also, watch for, and obey the instructions of the School Crossing Supervisor and keep

an eye out for parking restriction signs.

Parking Compliance

The City of Casey Officers attend various schools in the area, they enforce any breaches and may

issue on the spot fines. Please be mindful of Road Safety Rules and ensure that you are doing your

part to make the roads around the school a safe environment.

Prep News

Well done to all the Preps for completing a very successful term. We are looking forward to a wonderful Term 2 full of great learning.

The Prep Teddy Bears Picnic will take place in week 1

(Friday the 26th of April) Please make sure that your child brings along a teddy bear or soft toy for the event.

Discuss events or outings with your child that you have experienced together during the holidays. This will help with our recount writing in Term 2. Some questions to ask could

include: Where did we go today?

Who did we go with? What did you do today?

What did you enjoy about today? How did the activity make your feel?

Remember to log onto Mathletics, Reading Eggs, Bug Club and Whuska over the school holidays.

GRADE 1 NEWS

As part of our Harmony Day celebration on the 21st of March, the Grade 1 students participated in many

activities including designing a t-shirt to represent their different cultures. All of the students enjoyed sharing

their cultural background with their class and learning about each other’s cultures. Well done to the Grade 1

students who performed at our special Harmony Day assembly!

SCHOOL VALUES: OPTIMISM SUCCESS RESPECT DETERMINATION

We have been learning about recount writing this term in Grade 1. Each Monday the students have been

participating in an experience and writing about it during Big Write on Thursday. This week we had a Digi-

tech experience where we used the Blu-Bots, played Kahoot! and designed our own iPad app.

We hope all of the Grade 1 students and their families have a safe and happy holiday break. We look

forward to seeing you back in Term 2 and hearing all about your holiday adventures!

Students need a drink bottle at school every day, which is full of water.

Fruit break is at 10:00am – please ensure your child has some fruit to eat at this time.

School begins at 8:55am sharp.

Please make sure students bring their reading pouch to school every day with their yellow diary.

Teachers are on yard duty every day from 3:15pm-3:30pm (2:30pm-2:45pm on Wednesdays). Please

feel free to come and see us if you have any concerns.

GRADE 2 NEWS

The Grade 2’s took part in experiences for writing!

During our writing class the students took part in different activities in order to serve

as prompts for our recount writing. Students participated in three of five different

rotational activities such as ‘Guess my picture’ and ‘Four corners’ which they wrote

about later in the week in their big write. Engaging experiences such as these can

serve as great prompts for students who were required to recall details later in the

week.

Reminders:

We hope you have a fun and safe holidays, and we are looking forward to returning

to Barton Primary School next Term!

As Term 1 comes to an end, both students and teachers have reflected on all of our achievements and

favourite moments of the last ten weeks. Students wrote recounts about their term which highlighted

Harmony Day, Superhero Day, 5/6 sport and being school leaders as some of their best memories. We are

now looking forward to a busy Term 2!

Harmony Day was a fantastic celebration of the diversity and multiculturalism at Barton which was enjoyed

by all. After recess, students participated in different activities with a range of students from all year levels

and with different teachers. This was a great opportunity for students to get to know new people and for the

3-6 students to be leaders when helping the P-2 students in their group.

Congratulations to all of the students

who completed the cross country at

school on Friday the 29th of March. It

was fantastic to see students practising

the strategies they had learnt during

P.E and sport sessions throughout the

term to successfully complete the long

distance run.

In the 5/6 hub we have introduced a Mathletic’s

trophy for the class who gets the most certificates each

week. Competition has been fierce but 5/6B have

managed to be victorious in the first 2 weeks! The 5/6s

have also had the most total number of certificates out

of all of the year levels over the past 2 weeks. Mr.

Cooper has now challenged the 3/4s to try and beat

them!

Wow! What a wonderful Term 1 we have had! Here are some of the things we have been up to! The Preps have been focusing on learning about colours this term, we have learnt about ROY G BIV and the order of the colours in the rainbow! We have also been learning about objects, animals and food that is a specific colour! We explore using pastels and practised using scissors and glue and learnt how to curl paper to finish off these wonderful rainbows!

The Grade 1s have been finishing off an Australian Emu artwork where we have explored using charcoal to create our emus fur (texture) as well as practicing blending paints using a sponge!

The Grade 2s have been painting their clay projects this week and these are looking amazing so far – we can’t wait to glaze them next term!

The Grade 3/4s have been completing their heart in a jar projects, practicing their watercolour blending techniques and using their sketchbooks to test out their ideas. Our sketchbooks are great to try lots of different ideas quickly before moving on to creating an art piece. These are photos from our sketchbooks during our current project.

The grade 5/6s have been incredibly busy in the last few weeks of Art for Term 1. We have been experimenting with different painting techniques and have created lots of beautiful painted paper, which we have begun using to create some wonderful paper collages. These are looking incredible so far! Miss Wallwork and I wish you all a very happy and safe break and we look forward to working on more amazing things with you in Term 2!

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES

Students in Prep and Grade 1 have been

learning about water pollution. We

conducted an experiment to see the impact

of pollution on marine life, especially fish. We read the story of Freddie

Fish who was minding his own business until pollutants started filling his

home. Unlike humans, Freddie could not just stand up and leave. He was

stuck swimming in the polluted water. Students discussed ideas to help

prevent pollution entering our water.

The Grade 3/4 students have been researching the process of desalination. Students have

discussed desalination as a possible solution to increasing demand for water.

Bottled water? No way, Tap water is here to stay!

The Grade 5/6 students have been working on ad

campaigns promoting tap water, rather than

contributing to the 370 million plastic bottles in

Australian landfill every year. Students have worked

on creating slogans to accompany their campaigns.

Collecting cardboard and plastic waste

In Term 2 we are focusing on waste, if you have any

clean cardboard boxes or clean plastic bottles

please send them along in the first week of Term 2.

Great question to finish Term 1 Gabe!

This is normally called an eclipse, and it can happen in

two main forms.

A lunar eclipse is when the moon moves in an orbit, a

slow spin, around Earth at the same time the Earth is

moving around the sun. The Earth blocks the sunlight

from reflecting onto the moon, causing the moon to be

in darkness.

The second is called a solar eclipse and this happens

when the moon orbits Earth and moves between Earth

and the sun. When this happens, the moon blocks the

sunlight from reaching us on Earth.

Thank you for asking fantastic questions this term, both for the newsletter and within the

classroom, we will be continuing question corner next term so if you have a question you

would like answered then please write it down and I will do my best to answer as many as

possible.

I’m not sure if this is what is really happening in space right now, but thought it

was a funny way of looking at an eclipse!

SCHOOL VALUES: OPTIMISM SUCCESS RESPECT DETERMINATION

The past two weeks have been quite difficult for me! Yes, I am leaving Barton to pursue a new adventure at

Rosebud Primary School. Barton PS is 2 years old whereas Rosebud PS, having opened back in 1884, is 135

years old. Therefore, Rosebud is steeped in tradition, one of which is Music. The very different music

program at Rosebud is one that will continue to challenge me as a teacher and build in me new skills. I am

very excited about this new role at Rosebud, but incredibly sad to be leaving such wonderful people at

Barton.

I will absolutely miss all the students at Barton. Your enthusiastic approach to your music learning really

excites me. My ultimate aim is for every student to look forward to their music class, enjoying the joys of

music and having lots of fun. We’ve seen a lot of growth in the skills and musical abilities of students across

all year levels. Thank-you students for being so amazing – “Boom Chicka Boom”!

I’d like to thank Mr Felsinger for giving me the opportunity to create a new music program in a new school

and allowing me to “spread my wings” into other areas of school – Digi Tech, Reporting, Leadership. As I

said to Mr Felsinger when I told him I was applying for another job, “I’ve learnt a lot about myself while at

Barton”.

Thank-you to all the amazing admin/office staff. You are always willing to help in every situation and your

friendly “good morning” is always welcoming.

I really appreciate the leadership of Mr Cooper and Miss Seal. Both work incredibly hard to support staff

and students in every area of the school. As “Foundation Teachers”, Miss Seal and I have helped each other

develop and supported each other through our journeys at Barton. I’m so proud of the way Miss Seal has

slotted so effortlessly into the Wellbeing role. Mr Cooper and I have formed a fantastic friendship at Barton.

We both have a similar sense of humour and I’ll miss our “thought of the day” discussions!

A big thank-you to all the remarkable teaching staff and support staff at Barton! So many of you I have only

just “met” this year, but I can see the quality and professionalism in you all. Keep striving to do the very best

for your students. A famous American historian, Henry Brooks Adams, once said “A teacher affects eternity;

you can never tell where your influence stops”. This is the huge privilege and responsibility of teaching. Your

caring and positive approach towards your students will remain with them forever!

Finally, I want to thank the Specialist Team, or I’d rather say, Family. Wow, what an awesome group of

astounding teachers! I will so miss each of you – the way we lift each other up during the down times; the

way we celebrate even the smallest achievement; the way we unconditionally support each other and the

amazing programs we run. Miss Dunstan, Mrs Krejic, Miss Medwin, Ms Peters and Mrs Wallwork – I love

you all and will miss you so much!

What’s been happening in Music?

One of the most exciting performances I was lucky enough to be involved in was our Choir’s performance of

“Shallow” on Harmony Day and the following Friday Assembly. I had shivers and a massive sense of pride in

our singers every single time we rehearsed this song and, of course, when it was performed. So, the last

photo I would like to share is of this magnificent group of students, so professionally and enthusiastically led

by Miss Dunstan.

All the memories – performances, games, activities, student-made movies, music videos, student compositions, singing, dancing, playing instruments, rock-band, Celebration Concert, Choir, whole-school messages to “Quaver”, coding and many more will remain with me forever. As I often say at the end of a lesson – “See You Later Alligator” David Taylor MUSIC TEACHER
