Natural Coastal Features & Processes

Wave cut platform as a result of wave and wind action

Coastal Features

• Beach• Cliff• Bay

• Headland• Wave-cut

platform• Cave• Notch• Stack

Natural processes

•Erosion•Corrosion•Attrition•Deposition•Wave & wind action•Destructive waves•Constructive waves•Longshore drift

Natural processes like erosion have a high degree of spatial interaction with the shape of the coast. Due to spatial change over time, these processes are making a significant impact on the natural coastal features like beaches, headlands and wave-cut platforms. Natural processes like wave and wind action have a moderate rate of impact however they are making large scale changes to the features and components of Cape Schanck.

The rubbish left behind my humans on the beach kills marine life and pollutes the ocean. Human construction on and near beaches effects and/or destroys native habitats and other plants. However, as the attraction erodes, humans will try to sustain the environment by either creating a physical barrier or signs for tourists or building concrete barriers to prevent further erosion.

Board walk created for visitors So the natural environmentIs best preserved.

Proposed Strategies

PROPOSED STRATEGIES

RATIONALE (reason for the strategy)

1. Increase the car park by 50 spaces

(Accept some)

On weekends and on holidays the car park is full. This limits the number of people who can see, use and experience the inspiring Cape Schanck coastline.

2. Permit a private company to build and run a café adjacent to Stop 1.

(Accept)

This enables visitors to appreciate the scenery in comfort behind glass rather than being in the cold and wind. It also employs local people and boosts the economy and means people do not have to bring their own food and drinks.

Evaluation of Strategies & recommendation.

The first proposed strategy to extend the car park by 50 spaces will help to sustain the environment because it will allow more tourists which may be more beneficial socially and economically. The extra money being brought in by the increased number of tourists could be put towards the maintenance and sustainability of the Cape Schanck environment. However, if the car park isn’t extended then tourists could park at nearby shops and junctions which could potentially bring more business to local shops. This could also have a similar outcome in terms of sustainability.

The second proposed strategy to permit a private company to run a café would be beneficial for the environment as there will be less people bringing food and rubbish that could potentially damage or pollute the area over time. A restaurant with a breath-taking view would also attract locals and tourists which would benefit economically as it will increase the money being made and employ locals.

I would recommend further exploring the option for extending the car park as there are parking spots near local shops. You could also think about extending the board walk and creating signs with directions to Cape Schanck. This could have a similar effect and also bring more business to local shops and restaurants.

I would recommend a café to be built as it would bring more visitors to connect and share the environment which is socially beneficial and could also be environmentally beneficial as the people being brought in could learn about the environment and how to sustain it. It would also be economically more rewarding.

Suggestion

The few educational signs provided around Cape Schanck could be improved to further allow tourists and locals to learn more about the environment they are visiting. If there are more signs educating people about environmental impacts and issues, it could possibly reduce the amount of damage that is currently being caused by humans. (add more)
